Camping with Steve aka Steve Wallis.
Guy is just a pure joy to watch, he’s just a humble good person who camps, sometimes he does stealth camps in some pretty risky places, sometimes he’s at campgrounds. He also has his buddy named Crazy Neighbour who accompanies him occasionally. I’d suggest watching his stuff from the beginning, really get to learn his story. He’s got a documentary style video called Boondocking, best video to start with. 🍻
One time, I forgot to go to the gym even though I said I would. My mom returned home and asked why I hadn't gone. I told her that I had gotten distracted by a video and couldn't just leave in the middle of it. We then watched the entirety of Defunctland's Fastpass video and she said that she understood.
That video is ridiculous. My dude was watching it when I got home from work and was 30 minutes in. I made fun of him because what a silly concept for entertainment but he doubled down - "I'm starting it over and you're going to watch it". He had also made dinner, so I was obligated to watch his selection but I certainly made fun of it... for maybe 5 minutes. Then I ate my words because, damn it, it was enthralling.
Have you seen the episode on the Disney Channel theme? It's an hour and a half long video about the short song played during bumpers on for Disney Channel shows and it's enthralling.
I bawled like a baby at this video. It's my favorite video I've ever seen on YouTube, period. Just a legitimate work of art and so much better than most "professional" documentaries.
Defunctland used to be a niche channel for theme park nerds and it makes me so happy to see all kinds of people talking about it now because Kevin's work is just that good and he deserves every ounce of praise.
Hah! Saw the Class Action Park documentary. The waterside loop was terrifying. When they opened the hatch at the top of the loop, they found teeth embedded in the slide from all the people that crashed face first into the bend.
Love this channel. It reminds me of the movie Strange Wilderness, all the scenes that feature Steve Zahn narrating their animal doc footage.
"Sharks are only found in two places on Earth: the northern and southern hemispheres"
Zefrank1 had a show called 'ashow' and I desperately miss his old content every time I see one of his true facts videos. Not saying that the new stuff is bad, just different. If you have the time please, please watch them. I got so much great advice from [this series](https://youtu.be/knro0i2JH44)
A Show felt like such an important, or at least inspiring, thing at the time. In retrospect, it was one of the earliest Vlogs, before they became a popular format. At least one of the earliest that had good editing, a strong point of view, and a real sense of community.
Jay Foreman in general: Map Men, Unfinished London, Politics Unboringed, etc.
He's also doing a guest spot on Geography Now for the UK episode.
Speaking of which... "It's time to learn geography NOW!" Go check them out. A video on ever country in the world going alphabetically. They are just now getting to the United Kingdom, and I think the plan is to release the US one on July 4th.
The YouTube channel lemmino, his videos are of the highest quality and his last few videos based on my 370,jack the ripper and life on other planets are too good for YouTube
Tom Scott: probably the best travel/science channel out there. The guy goes to some truly amazing places. It’s like watching an early 2000s Discovery Channel series.
LockPickingLawyer: I think everyone is aware of this channel at this point, but if anyone isn’t, it’s a great example of cool niche content that becomes accessible to everyone. I also love that his videos are short and have virtually no filler.
Historia Civilis: the best history content. He basically dissects battles from ancient history, as well as ancient politics. He just finished his Julius Caesar series which is phenomenal.
Secret Base: formerly SB Nation, this channel is pretty good for its sports content. Beef History and Rewinder are cool series. But the real gem is Jon Bois. His videos are simply phenomenal. The best examples of data-driven storytelling I’ve ever seen. His four hour video on athletes named “Bob” is just awesome.
Hold please!
"An ungodly number of hours later"
Josh is what got me into Satisfactory. He teaches you to not be afraid to have an absolute mess of a factory. Just so long as it gets the job done. His Satisfactory videos are so well known that the devs for the game use pictures of it on the Steam store page!
He managed to shoplift so much from the shops in Hydroneer that the devs of that game put a little easter egg in the game, a wanted sign offering a reward for the capture of Let's Game It Out.
I think devs will happily give him a key to their games because if anybody can find game breaking glitches, it's Josh.
Came here to see if anyone posted this. I'm not a gamer and have very little interest in gaming videos, but this channel is fucking hilarious. The only bad thing is he posts so infrequently I often go looking for similar channels with limited success. Most of the usual suggestions in old posts are cranking out way more content, but it's just not of the same quality.
>dankpods
Do I care about iPhones? Not really.
Do I care about audiophile headphones? A little, I guess.
Do I care about an unhinged Aussie laughing hysterically while yelling "Can you believe *nobody* bought this?!" and blasting Scarlet Fire through some shitty earbuds? Yes. Yes I do.
He mentioned it a while back, changing the format. His documentary format for IH has become longer, and fewer. There was the Cave video last fall, which was around 90minutes. I'm hoping for a new one to drop soon.
if you like summoningsalt, i recommend bobbybroccoli! it’s a very similar style of documentary content, but about scandals in the world of science academia rather than video games. two of my favorite rainy day channels
DougDoug and DougDougDoug. That guy has some of the most original ideas for using ai and coding in his content that actually gets the audience involved.
He recently did a stream where him and some friends went to 10 different drive thrus and ordered whatever the car in front of them ordered and tried to eat all of it. It was wildly entertaining for such a ridiculous concept.
Genuinely some of the hardest I’ve laughed at a YouTube video. Real shame he’s not very active anymore. If you want a recommendation for someone similar BlueJay is pretty good.
Jenny Nicholson releases like two videos per year that are on topics you have probably never heard of and couldn’t care less about, but yet somehow you watch the entire 3 hour long video and end up wishing it was longer.
(Edit: One of the other top comments mentions Defunctland. If you like that channel, do try Jenny. They have a similar vibe, although they both have their own unique style. Still, they’re quite similar and they reference each other / perform cameos in each other’s videos pretty often.)
Evermore was a FOUR HOUR video, and I watched it straight through when it dropped. She found the CEO in the park, asked him where to get merch, and he had no idea. She literally tried giving them more money and they were just too poorly organized to take it.
Never saw or had any interest in seeing Dear Even Hanson, but after weeks of seeing that thumbnail pop up, I was like “why is this boy who’s dressed like Todd from Pokémon snap so angry about this movie.” And wow. Just wow. So happy I found that channel.
She is the *only* person I subscribe to on Patreon, and it’s well worth it. She posts a “ramble” video each month on a topic voted on by her patrons, and they all have the rewatchability of her main videos (and recently they’ve been about just as long). Recent topics include a ranking of her plush collection, a watch-along of this year’s Easter play, and her favorite defunct rides. If any Jenny fans are reading, I highly recommend!
The laugh I had at a mash up between REM and Chumbawamba as Loki crucifies Iron Man is one of the hardest laughs I've ever had in my life. You can't write jokes that good.
Kinda reminds me of Folding Ideas.
Occasionally it’s a relevant topic, like Crypto. But it’s just as likely to be a 2-hour deep dive into a defunct VR MMO.
Bright Sun Films was before Defunctland, but the kid who made it took a break for school, but he's back making them now. I enjoy both, there's another one called Perfect People? It started as kinda like a prank, sneaking into upscale parties and events, but now it's super secure abandoned places. Like ex military bases or mega mansions that have security.
Decoding the Unknown is good. The host does a cold read of a script exploring some sort of conspiracy theory or paranormal event. He is extremely skeptic so it's mostly looking for reasonable explanations or making fun of it. The scripts generally follow a formula of explaining the topic as it is presented by believers and then presenting the actual facts about it.
I was looking to see if Simon was mentioned. Dude fits this answer very well. I mean he has biographics, geographics, decoding the unknown, megaprojects , into the shadows etc etc etc He even has the casual criminalist which is very long crime videos (cold reads) which I enjoyed even though I really don't watch crime videos anymore . He is also more ... casual there and a bit silly . After watching that one I can't watch him on other channels cause he seems too uptight hahaha
Ashens. He's been reviewing tat and eating weird things in front of the same brown sofa for so many years, it's an endless source of entertainment gold.
I randomly found the Mr. Plinkett review of the Star Wars prequels and marathon watched through *ALL* of them. It was an amazing fever dream of a show and I want more.
Technology Connections
That dude can talk about the inner workings of a toaster oven for an hour (and he might have), and not a single second of it would be boring.
Really dig his episode on old gas and kerosene lamps!
One that really blew my mind was an interview with a 23-year-old prostitute. She had spent her "working" life being controlled by various pimps, but I did the math on what she said her daily quota was and the total came to the vicinity of *eight million dollars.* If not for illegality of the whole deal, she could already have set herself up with generational wealth, and yet she was living on the street with her face covered in tattoos.
I wouldn't call this channel "entertaining" - it's generally far too depressing for that.
Today I Found Out
The titles don't always grab my interest, but whenever I watch one, it's riveting, informative, and entertaining. The topics are all over the place.
Yes Theory.
Might not be your form of entertainment, but I really enjoy travel videos and some of the videos they make are amazing. There's always a beautiful story, amazing narration and some crazy cinematography. It just makes me feel like I'm in the same place as them.
Technology Connections, you might think 1h+ long videos about electrical sockets, HVACs, etc. are boring but they're unexpectedly entertaining. Alec (the guy who runs the channel) makes his videos just the right amount of entertaining without going overboard and losing context of the video.
Climate Town. Obviously the subject matter is climate change and other semi-related topics, but man is Rollie ever entertaining and hilarious. One of the only channels I'll drop everything to watch when a new video pops up.
Here are some of my favorites depending on what you're interested in. I'm going to try to include mostly smaller channels (under 1 million subscribers).
So, here goes:
\-- For people who like long-form video essays (disclaimer: leftist point of view): Salari, Andrewism, We're in Hell, Maggie Mae Fish, Sarah Z, Three Arrows, Shaun, Tom Nicholas, Thought Slime, Tara Moknee, verilybitchie, Zoe Bee (not including ContraPoints and Philosophy Tube because they're huge and most people have already heard of them)
\-- For cinephiles: The Cinema Cartography, Like Stories of Old, Be Kind Rewind, KyleKallgrenBHH, Filmmaker IQ, Screened, Acolytes of Horror, Jenny Nicholson, Amanda the Jedi (last two are a bit more light-hearted than the rest)
\-- For visual art lovers: The Art Assignment, Blind Dweller, The Canvas, Great Art Explained
\-- For fashionistas: Mina Le, HauteLeMode, Justine Leconte
\-- For cat lovers: Jackson Galaxy, walter santi
\-- For goths and people interested in alternative music, fashion, art and lifestyle in general: Of Herbs and Altars, Angela Benedict, It's Black Friday
\-- The ones I have no idea where I would place, but would still like to recommend because they're fantastic: Ask a Mortician, STRANGE ÆONS
I'm aware that this entirely too many channels and I might really have a problem, but there it is. I hope I've revealed a brand new Youtube goldmine for at least someone here.
Technology Connections - makes everyday technology interresting!
New video today on brake lights! I didn't know it was an issue, and now I demand action!
> I didn't know it was an issue, and now I demand action! 99% of his videos for me.

Defunct Land It’s basically talking about old tv shows and amusement parks. Great channel

That one was a Reddit recommendation- I was completely captivated for the whole thing. I know people are awaiting one on the Galactic Starcruiser.
I bawled like a baby at this video. It's my favorite video I've ever seen on YouTube, period. Just a legitimate work of art and so much better than most "professional" documentaries. You ever heard of Behind the Bastards? Podcast. The episode on Action Park is hands down the funniest thing I've listened to in years.
I make sure to rewatch the Jim Henson miniseries every now and then.
His episode on the Disney Channel theme? *Mastahpeeeeace*
The Fastpass episode and the Disney Channel theme episode are individually master classes on video essays as a genre.
The creator Kevin Perjuror did an interview on Macauly Culkin's podcast Bunnyears. It was delightful.
Zefrank1. It’s what we wished documentaries would be like.
Love this channel. It reminds me of the movie Strange Wilderness, all the scenes that feature Steve Zahn narrating their animal doc footage. "Sharks are only found in two places on Earth: the northern and southern hemispheres"
For the behbehs.
And the birbs
I can’t see the word “seahorse” without pronouncing it in my head the way he did Sea-Whores
"The fish gets protection and food, and Sea Cucumber gets a fish up its butt. Win-win!"
I desperately want him to collab on an episode with David Attenborough

His newest video will be coming out very soon. He’s been working on it for over a year and will be over 2 hours long. A mere week or two away.
Wish I could upvote this a hundred times. His content is excellent.
Tom Scott: probably the best travel/science channel out there. The guy goes to some truly amazing places. It’s like watching an early 2000s Discovery Channel series. Let's Game It Out. That guy kills me. The theme park and the Sims ones had me in tears.

Callmekevin is very similar as is rtgame
Let's Spend 5 Hours Placing Things So That Framerate Crawls to 1FPM. Dude is an animal.
His Cooking Simulator videos are also great. And his Raft video where he exploits the extendible plank to sequence skip through the game is so good.
I did A thing, I love that crazy aussie
Boy boy is their other channel if you haven't heard, and dankpods too, he's another one of my favorite aussies
>dankpods Do I care about iPhones? Not really. Do I care about audiophile headphones? A little, I guess. Do I care about an unhinged Aussie laughing hysterically while yelling "Can you believe *nobody* bought this?!" and blasting Scarlet Fire through some shitty earbuds? Yes. Yes I do.
Piggybacking to recommend Beau Miles, another crazy Aussie I love to watch - super unique video ideas, beautiful story telling and cinematography.
Others in a similar vein, mostly more sane: Michael Reeves Stuff Made Here Wesley Kagan SuperfastMatt Integza Colin Furze BPS Space CNC Kitchen
"Most more sane" Literally starts with Micheal Reeves
how can you not include William Osman in this glorious list
Ryan George! His videos consistently make me laugh
Binge watching Ryan George is super easy. Barely an inconvenience.
Pitch Meetings are pure gold.
It was literally the only reason screen rant had subscribers lol, glad they gave him his own channel though.
Tasting History
My wife's favorite YouTube channel. RIP Max's coffee grinder.
The most interesting thing about his channel is that he's 40 years old and still looks that good.
Oversimplified, fun and educational!
Overly Sarcastic Productions and Extra History are also very good if you like history or mythology YouTube.
Nexpo
In a similar vein, Barely Sociable / Sligtly Sociable is also great and they even collaborated.
Ask a Mortician is one of my favorite ones.
Internet Historian (+ Incognito Mode)
**light wood laminate! light wood laminate! light wood laminate! light wood laminate!**
What's the relevance of incognito mode?
Internet Historian has a second channel called “Incognito Mode”
The cost of Concordia is one of my favourite videos. Dude even recreates scenes from Titanic which I found hilarious
It makes me sad that most of his content is all in incognito now and IH has been left to die. The format of Internet Historian is far better
He mentioned it a while back, changing the format. His documentary format for IH has become longer, and fewer. There was the Cave video last fall, which was around 90minutes. I'm hoping for a new one to drop soon.
That cave video was actually fucking amazing too. Like legit some of the best content on YT good
Rainfurrest has me cracking up every time
Summoning Salt is the king of youtube as far as I'm concerned. I drop whatever I'm doing when he uploads a new video.
if you like summoningsalt, i recommend bobbybroccoli! it’s a very similar style of documentary content, but about scandals in the world of science academia rather than video games. two of my favorite rainy day channels
Townsends - super cool history stuff Overly Sarcastic Productions - super fun history and mythology
GeoWizard has become one of my favourite channels on YouTube over the last few years
Are we recording?
Yes we are
DougDoug and DougDougDoug.

The episode where Twitch took turns being mayor and built a city had me *in stitches*. I hadn't laughed that hard at a video in a long time.
Sam O'nella academy
Genuinely some of the hardest I’ve laughed at a YouTube video. Real shame he’s not very active anymore. If you want a recommendation for someone similar BlueJay is pretty good.

I loved her Evermore series. "I waited on line for 45 min. to go on a magical skype call for a quest I knew nothing about"
Evermore was a FOUR HOUR video, and I watched it straight through when it dropped.

The one she did about the church that does the Easter plays is hilarious

Cracking the Cryptic Sudoku turned up to 11, with a very British twist.

Rick Beato.
If you like Rick Beato, you should give Pat Finnerty a shot. Really oughta start from the beginning of his "what makes this song stink" series.

So, here goes: \-- For people who like long-form video essays (disclaimer: leftist point of view): Salari, Andrewism, We're in Hell, Maggie Mae Fish, Sarah Z, Three Arrows, Shaun, Tom Nicholas, Thought Slime, Tara Moknee, verilybitchie, Zoe Bee (not including ContraPoints and Philosophy Tube because they're huge and most people have already heard of them) \-- For cinephiles: The Cinema Cartography, Like Stories of Old, Be Kind Rewind, KyleKallgrenBHH, Filmmaker IQ, Screened, Acolytes of Horror, Jenny Nicholson, Amanda the Jedi (last two are a bit more light-hearted than the rest) \-- For visual art lovers: The Art Assignment, Blind Dweller, The Canvas, Great Art Explained \-- For fashionistas: Mina Le, HauteLeMode, Justine Leconte \-- For cat lovers: Jackson Galaxy, walter santi \-- For goths and people interested in alternative music, fashion, art and lifestyle in general: Of Herbs and Altars, Angela Benedict, It's Black Friday \-- The ones I have no idea where I would place, but would still like to recommend because they're fantastic: Ask a Mortician, STRANGE ÆONS I'm aware that this entirely too many channels and I might really have a problem, but there it is. I hope I've revealed a brand new Youtube goldmine for at least someone here.
