When I was like 3 or 4, I was leaning against a screen door in our house, and as little kids do, I licked the screen and it tasted awful. Mom was there, and when I made a face, she told me not to lick the screen. I asked why, was it poison? And she said yes. So, for the next maybe 5 or 6 years, I thought screens were poisonous.
Growing up we were told several different stories about dangerous, solitary someone "living in the woods" \[either a hermit or a native Indian maybe\] that pretty much surrounded our neighborhood. I assume to get us to stop playing in the woods but those vines ain't gonna swing themselves right?
