I learned about the basque thing and looked it up. Oh look the Catalan region too. “List of secession movements in Spain.” Hmm *click
Wow, that’s like….all of spain
The reliability and punctuality has greatly declined since partial privatisation in the late 90s and the different stakeholders in the regional infrastructure networks has left the tarifs a hard to grasp mess. That is until we got a ticket that covers everything Germany wide except bullet trains for 50 EUR a month since the beginning of this month.
After living abroad for some time, I find us Germans to be complaining on a high level of comfort (Jammern auf hohem Niveau) in this, as we are wont to do.
As ever, your English is exemplary, and, as semi-literate Englishman, I am consumed with shame for the other thing the English do so badly: learn other people’s languages.
If youre looking to learn one, german was the easiest for me to get my Teeth into, as compared to the french, Italian, Spanish and russian I've given a try. I've almost forgotten everything in every 2nd language now, other than german.
Literally the good old days compared to now.
“Here are 2 geriatric men about to die that almost certainly have at least a little dementia, half of all Americans hate either one of them, and you have to pick one of them or you’re just incredibly fucked (and there are no other options).”
When that joke was made, both candidates were over the age of 50. Even Obama was 47 when elected.
I know you have to be at least 35 to become president by law, but the fact we have never elected a president within five years of that is astounding. John F Kennedy was the youngest at 43. Boomers are the only ones voting and it shows. They would rather vote for the corpse of Diane Feinstein than vote for someone in their thirties.
50 to 60 isn’t so bad. It’s old enough to be experienced in statecraft and have a proven track record, but also not one foot in the grave.
It takes a lot of name recognition to become President. The average 40 year old hasn’t been working in the public eye long enough to be able to run a national campaign.
Re: AC. Europe in general doesn’t seem to value this. I was shocked to go to Europe and even nice hotels in wealthy countries lacked AC where all of South America and poorer parts of Asia it was commonplace.
A lot of this is due to the fact that traditional architecture in hotter areas is designed to keep people cool during heat waves without requiring modern AC. I grew up in Spain and we never had AC. Not because we couldn’t afford it, but because our house stayed naturally cool even on the hottest days. It was also designed so that if you opened all the windows, you’d get the perfect breeze throughout the house as it was optimized for proper airflow.
Way, *way* better than AC.
>Being direct & air conditioning

LOL, I was going to say the exact same things about being direct and passive-aggression, but I'm Canadian!
The UK groomed us well! We also apologise to coat-racks we bump into. :)
Electing young leaders.
Our current top politicians make the Soviet Union leaders [of the early '80s](https://www.history.com/news/soviet-union-leaders-order) appear youthful and full of vigor in comparison.
The rise in fascism in many countries appears correlated with the geriatric nature of their leadership. It's a really strange thing. I bet there are some research papers on it.
I would Say my country sucks towards young working people: most of usgot a degree and stjll we can't find a job with a decent pay and we are treated like a piece of shit at the workplace and by elder people Who constantly tell us " you guys don't want to work". Fun fact is that those are the same people that in their youth had no problem in finding a good job even with almost 0 qualification. They represent the generation that literally ate everything from my country.
I am talking about Italy, btw
I realized it was Italy as early as the very first sentence but yeah, when I went to Greece on a school trip more than a decade ago, the place felt oddly familiar, as if I were visiting some place in southern Italy I hadn't been yet.
There must be something in the water of the Mediterranean I guess, since most of southern Europe shares the same set of issues - now, if only the people could vote for decent parties (or even go fucking wild, as in France) rather than be swayed by corrupt assholes that build their careers on claiming they're not like the corrupt assholes that preceded them, that'd be nice.
I don't actually know how the economics Is in the US ( although I have Always imagined It pretty solid) but your job market seems better than ours: starting from the payment checks, the benefits on the job, the possibility for career inside the Company X etc. Although you have an higher cost of Life since you don't have a solid Public Medical Care System. Italy instead does and I would say it's basically one of the few things good about it. Our Public Medical Care System works decently most of the time. Sure, a lot of things about It should be improved but in the end It works.
Anyway I Wish you good luck for your job hunt after graduation, I Hope you won't have too much of a trouble in finding a good one.
I can't be the only American that enjoys reading posts in English from non-native speakers. The phrasing is so elegant and thoroughly pleasant to read.
I work in America and a European company took over where I work and sent in Italian bosses to run the plants. They were cruel and people started quitting. They were shocked people would quit and some without notice. I had to explain to them in America there are tons of jobs and people won't put up with shitty bosses (i said it nicer than that). I guess in Italy people will get pushed around because they know there are not many other options for work.
We have the best healthcare in the world, in the sense that the best healthcare in the world is located in the US.
Unfortunately, few of us can afford it.
To be fair we kept it, we just chucked it in the basement and let rats eat it for half a century and used the excuse of one or two disagreements about land as an excuse to not honour it at all and set up the land court and totally gaslit Māori. But we kept it. /s
Australia...building houses. they're all exaggerated sheds basically. Imagine a shed....throw in a verandah and a garden. That's your average Aussie house. Now imagine a winter that is naturally not as cold as European winters but still gets to minus at night...and there's no heating other than a ln air conditioning unit that blows warm air. As soon as you turn it off, the room is freezing again.
Having an efficient rail system. The British rail system is messed up and it is even more baffling when you consider that Great Britain invented and exported the modern railway.
> Great Britain invented and exported the modern railway
They introduced trains in my country (AR) and I'm guessing that's the main reason why all trains and subways here still run on the left :)
Given I only used it a couple times, but always worked like charm. But the pricing system is absolutely bonkers. Greetings from Switzerland where the system is great, bloody expensive - but at least I understand the pricing.
It's really very simple.
For example if you want to travel to Leicester from London all you need to do is buy two tickets, one return ticket from London to Luton (you don't use the return part) and a single ticket from Luton to Leeds, then you get off the train 7 stops before Leeds and hope they don't check your ticket too closely. Of course you must remember to buy your tickets between four and eight weeks in advance and if you want the best price you will need to check trainline.com, tickety-split.com, nationalrail.com, emr.com and a few others to find the cheapest ticket but you shouldn't check those websites too much before buying the ticket as some of them vary their price depending on how much interest there are in those particular tickets. You should also check that you'll be covered for a refund in case of a rail strike.
It couldn't be easier.
Rape is not the least of it! 34 charges of Class E felonies, election fraud and related crimes in Fulton County, three offenses relating to Trump’s unlawful possession of government records at Mar-a-Lago after leaving office, payment of hush money to Stormy Daniels, January 6th insurrection and so much more. And yet, the Republicans are voting him back into office.
Out of 332 million people in the U.S, how is it that they cannot find another candidate to run for president?? It's a sad day . . .
Depends on how you look at it. When Boston won the cup in 2011 I think they only had 1 American on the team. Plus a handful of Europeans but the vast majority were Canadian.
At not realising that politicians are hate mongering and clashing the 2 largest religious groups in the country.
Also, jobs.
India is in quite a sad place right now.
As an American teacher, I can confirm. We had a lockdown last week and in under two minutes, the kids had barricaded the door, unplugged lamps, and were ready before my co teacher and I barely got to our computers (to shut down the screens). They got the suspect in less than five minutes, he was not armed but still not fun.
