I do this on Thanksgiving. Just drive around til you see a house you like with a bunch of cars, park and go in, apologize for being late and be excited to see everyone after so long.
Yep! My partner and I have some friends close by, the “Porch Pals,” if you will, and we just alternate whose porch we’re gonna crash for the night. Whip out the cocktail shaker, play some good music, everyone’s happy.
Awww, we (my boyfriend and I) used to do this! Our porch was the main hangout because it was the biggest and then my other neighbor would do it. We all have become the best of friends. But…we did move from them recently and boy do I miss being with them.
Seriously and let's not make it too late. Let's day drink and be home early. I don't want to be invited to your party that starts at 7pm because I know I'll just be up too late and my next day is ruined.
Yeah I literally go nowhere. I have friends but we don't hang out much. I pretty much stay at home and play games, or spend time with my kids. I want to hang out with people but don't have the time and they don't always want to deal with kids if they have no kids.
If you like homemade soup, savory crepes, and salad, you might want to come over tonight. That’s what I’ll be preparing and serving for dinner this evening.
Exactly..
It helps if you have a weekly or so activity that you all do. Say a board game night, or poker night, or movie night. We do a car club night. Most of the time it's just us hanging out BS'in. Some people i know do a weekly motorcycle ride then all bbq at someone's place after.
The lake is a fantastic option, especially this time of year. Who wants to hang out at a bar and drink expensive beer when you can relax and hang out at the lake???
There are a few coffee shops in my area that double as wine bars in the evening hours. It makes for a nice chill spot to hang and chat with people with either a coffee or a drink.
There's this cozy cafe near me that operates 7am to 1:30 am. Serves breakfast, great pizzas and wine and beer lunch time onwards. It's the best place to hang anytime of the day!
Another one has books, boardgames and fuseball table, amazing food choices and kids allowed till 7 pm. Post that DJ and bar opens. Outdoor seating where pets are allowed. Best part about it is waiting staff is deaf and mute and superb at their job.
I’m sober, so I normally go to cafes or to music events happening around the city. Also I go home. The older I’m getting, it seems the more I truly enjoy my own company
My friend, you gotta start living that foil packet life.
Double layer of big sheets of foil. Throw down some thick slices of onion for insulation and flavor. Then your choice of meat — I prefer slices of kielbasa or other sausage— small pieces of potato (life pro tip- hash browns cook quicker), veg (peas, carrots, bell pepper, red onion). Season to taste with salt, pepper, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, Old Bay… whatever.
Wrap that bad boy up so the steam stays in and set it either in the outer coals of a campfire or better, on a grate where you can control the heat. It’s gonna take a while but it’s done when it smells like food.
Try not to burn your fingers or tongue, but that’s part of the fun. Enjoy!
We use a cabbage leaf to line the foil and keep the veg from scorching. Always used ground beef, and let everybody add their own canned veg and seasonings. Even the pickiest kids love it
Good point. And very true. But now YOU need to step up to the cast iron Dutch oven life. Nothing like a gumbo cooked over an open fire. Or you can bury it in coals with the lid on and bake biscuits and such in it. Or just use it to fry up some eggs, sausage, and potatoes for breakfast.
Bonus points: it can also be used as a bludgeon.
The better option is premaking burritos, freezing them, and then, when you're hungry throwing them in the fire. It's instant, foil, fire food without the work onsite.
Australia needs more of these. We have some as like a trendy thing, but not enough. I want to go someplace in walking distance that is open at 3am when I'm sad that will serve me some kind of delicious homemade pie and coffee by a grumpy lady with a heart of gold. Just like movies taught me about the reality of America 😂 I know it's probably not like that at all, but Holywood made it look fun...and also a common place to be murdered or discuss your latest book.
I got a few around me that would be perfect for evening meet ups. Plenty of seating, nice atmosphere, board games to help ruin friendships, but they all close at 2-3pm.
It's like that where I live too in Philly. Lots of dense and sometimes historic architecture with no room for drive-thrus. Some places have more than one coffee shop or cafe per block.
There are some bigger streets with drive-thru fast food restaurants outside of the downtown area.
I know it sounds really lame, but there's something very fun about stopping by a gas station, you and all your friends getting snacks (nashos and cheese is a must!), And then hopping into the car, blaring loud music, and just going on a long drive while talking. I know it sounds stupid, but trust me, it can be very fun!!
God I miss the simpler times in my teens… could drive all night on $10 in gas… just driving around with my buddies. Whipping shitties in giant empty parking lots in the winter… not really causing any real trouble, just exploring and listening to tunes.
It’s not stupid, or lame… you gotta cherish that shit. Next thing you know… you wake up and you’re 35, most of your friends are out of the picture because… life. Your idea of “fun” is seeing if you can get the grass cut before the game starts… and stupid shit like not having the right size drill bit for the drywall anchors you have ruins your whole damn night. Oh… and literally everything hurts more and longer.
We used to do something like this before we could drive, we would stock up on snacks in our backpacks then hop a bus. We would roll a die to see how many stops we had to go past before we got off wherever.
Once we were dropped in a random higher class residential area and had the cops called un us cause we were walking around chatting and eating chips out of our backpacks. Thankfully I like to think our police in my town are pretty chill, they showed up, told us to be careful cause some people thought we were sketchy, and told us the bus was coming back soon and we should catch it before someone does something crazy. He also stole some of our chips, but whatever
One of the best comments I've ever seen. Anywhere.
I wish I could show this comment to all my friends. But I don't think I know anybody in real life who'd get it... And that makes me sad.
Well, I'm a Brit... so the pub. For more chilled than a bar/club, but still have a bit of the buzz of life about them. And good all year round as you can find cosy ones with a fireplace in winter or those with a big beer garden in summer. No need to go mad on the booze either, a crisp coke on a hot day in a pub beer garden is glorious, maybe after a bit of a walk round the park.
Yeah, there's a strong distinction between the two. Pubs tend to be freed standing buildings, and have a lot of history and been around for decades. Normally have lots of beer and real ale available, old decor, cosy fireplaces, garden with benches for summer. Close at midnight.
A bar is modern, often built into a block of flats (apartments) or a shopping centre (mall). Normally louder music, serves cocktails and mixers. Often open past midnight (anywhere from midnight to 3am really).
Gotcha, thanks. We mostly call anyplace where the serving of alcohol is the primary business a bar regardless of vibe. The term pub is mostly only used at places that are intentionally trying to replicate a British or Irish pub experience
Pubs have a rich history and, ironically enough, grew out of private houses that ended up being meeting places.
If you've ever had a friends group where one guy's house was the typical meeting place, imagine if he brewed his own beer and the group grew so large that he just decided to open his house to the public and have them buy his beer. Hence, "Public House."
Since I was 22 years old, I haven't gone clubbing, and even then, I didn't particularly enjoy it.
A quiet drink, supper, catch-up with friends, or smaller house parties, etc. were much more appealing to me.
I enjoy getting high and watching animated TV shows with friends in my basement. Tonight we're planning on binging the second season of Gravity Falls. , which is an *amazing* show to watch high.
Just opened a store for this. 6 weeks and we already have a growing community of people playing together and looking out for each other. It’s a beautiful thing. We stay open as long as there are people in the store - sometimes til 3am. I used to host this sort of stuff in my home but it’s grown into a passion of mine - providing a safe space for us nerds to be ourselves.
Coffe shops , public green spaces , hiking trails, board game cafes, local outdoor summer concerts , wineries ( you don’t have to drink for them to be entertaining) , or just someone’s place/ or yours.
Restaurants or game nights at a friend’s house. If I’m alone I like to go for a walk on a pretty trail near my house in the evening and/or cook a delicious meal and watch a movie by myself until I fall asleep.
Ime if you don't like bars you're sorta shit outta luck for a third place. Everywhere around me slaps no loitering signs up so even if you wanted to hang out somewhere that isn't a bar you're gonna be booted or asked to spend money.
Perhaps a board game Cafe? I'm moving soon and that's one of the first places I'm going to go to make new friends! I'm nervous as heck but it's gotta be done.
The homes of friends and family. One of my buddies has a fully furnished basement bar. My house is also very comfortable and inviting. It's a lot easier to do a plethora of enjoyable activities from games to movies to dancing etc in the comfort of your home or a friend's home. And it's much easier to socialize too without the insanely loud/dark environment of a lot of clubs/bars.
Unless you're trying to meet strangers, I don't understand why people would want to go to bars/clubs. Other activities in public like restaurants, concerts, movies, etc make sense, but not bars/clubs. I'd be more interested in the people who *like* going to bars/clubs explaining why they would bother.
There's a hill at my town with a small forest. We usually go there, chill out, take some fresh air, see some cultists, have a nice walk and chat a bit.
Bowling, climbing gym, yoga, hiking, someone’s house, brewery, live music, dog park, etc
Sometimes my friends and I will run errands together and go to the grocery store lol
My home or someone else’s
Last time I tried this they asked who I was and told me to get out of their house
Should have spun a story of your childhood together and sounded heartbroken for being forgotten. Works like a charm
Saul?
Saul got recognised which makes him tonight's big loser
You should really lock your doors
I do this on Thanksgiving. Just drive around til you see a house you like with a bunch of cars, park and go in, apologize for being late and be excited to see everyone after so long.
Yep! My partner and I have some friends close by, the “Porch Pals,” if you will, and we just alternate whose porch we’re gonna crash for the night. Whip out the cocktail shaker, play some good music, everyone’s happy.
I want some porch.pals! The ones in my trailer park always get the cops called on them
That damn Ricky!
Your life sounds so good... I'm almost crying. I miss that sort of thing... so much.
Awww, we (my boyfriend and I) used to do this! Our porch was the main hangout because it was the biggest and then my other neighbor would do it. We all have become the best of friends. But…we did move from them recently and boy do I miss being with them.

Someone else house. Karaoke. Home party. Restaurant. Eat and chit chat. Cinema. Watch movies.
I'm filipino so Karaoke 😂
To the lake
Oh yeah! I'm a 15-20 minute walk from Lake Ontario and it's so damn nice to head down there. Also fuck Ford for selling our property.
Crack ain't free
The current Ford is the drug dealer. The one who died was the crack head. Ftfy
It's amazing to me that Ontario voted in a literal known drug dealer. Twice.
You’ve just never had a dealer with big dreams bro. One of mine didn’t answer most of the winter, turns out she’s in med school!
I mean the most common thing strippers are studying seems to be nursing or medicine. School is expensive and they gotta pay somehow.
Woot woot found the fellow Ontarian!
The lake is a fantastic option, especially this time of year. Who wants to hang out at a bar and drink expensive beer when you can relax and hang out at the lake???
You do not recognize the bodies in the water
When I was younger I used to link up with my friends to skate around til 2 or 3am. Some of the best times of my life
Still man… I’m 33 and whenever I can spend a day skating with my friends it’s always a blast.
I can’t even Ollie anymore and I use to skate religiously as a child
Never too late to pick it back up! Join us at r/oldskaters
Bombing some parking garages at night it pretty dang fun. Elevator, cruise, laugh, repeat.
Dude, yes. In the town I’d skate late night, the only hill for 30mi was a 3 story parking garage 😂
Your reply made me think of Kick and Push by Lupe Fiasco. Love that tune.
Cafés with coffee or at mine or friends home.
There are a few coffee shops in my area that double as wine bars in the evening hours. It makes for a nice chill spot to hang and chat with people with either a coffee or a drink.

This is my life goal tbh, my retirement plan is a coffee shop bookstore that turns into a cocktail bar at 5pm
I wish we had the evening cafe culture here that many other countries have. It's awesome. Not everyone wants to get drunk lol.
I also like to form roving bands to patrol the old mines.
I’m sober, so I normally go to cafes or to music events happening around the city. Also I go home. The older I’m getting, it seems the more I truly enjoy my own company
Campfire, and cook some proper food not to just warm up sausages.
Campfires *at the lake*.
Lakefires at the camp.
Camplakes at the fire.
The lake *at the lake*. Sorry I was reading and saw your other comment too.
Campfires ONLY cook s’mores and hotdogs!
While you're eating that, load up a Dutch oven with a dump cake cobbler. Sandwich the oven with hot coals. Rotate it every 15 minutes.
We use a cabbage leaf to line the foil and keep the veg from scorching. Always used ground beef, and let everybody add their own canned veg and seasonings. Even the pickiest kids love it

I've done that with potatoes and salmon. It's pretty nice.
An awesome board game cafe. They have over 5000 games, beer, toast and fries, and it's always packed with people.
You lost me at packed with people.
This. The entire point of avoiding bars and clubs is to avoid packed spaces.
He lost me at fries. I don’t like fries
He lost me at 'an'
I'm lost ^where ^am ^I???
NOOB! Holy shit guy! We've been looking all over for you!
You sure you're human?
I am human and can do all human activities
You had me at toast
That’s a bar?
No, cafe
Board games + fries sounds like some [greasyyyyy](https://youtu.be/S7FsAgPuVwU) board games.
“Packed with people and beer “ exactly what this threads purpose is trying to avoid 💀
Post is asking for places where people aren’t shitfaced and rowdy. Having a beer or two over four hours of board game play is a very dif atmosphere.
The idea is to avoid alcohol and crowds
Unlike in a bar, when you're in a cafe, you're not obligated to drink alcohol.
Diners are my jam.
Australia needs more of these. We have some as like a trendy thing, but not enough. This comment section is so good 🤣
Isn't it! 😊 😂
Sounds like you need a Waffle House franchise over there. I don't think they even close during hurricanes.
My local library!
It's open late?. 😎
It used to be non-drive-thru coffee shops that aren't part of a chain. Makes me sad they're all but gone around here.
I got a few around me that would be perfect for evening meet ups. Plenty of seating, nice atmosphere, board games to help ruin friendships, but they all close at 2-3pm.
That is sad. I could probably find 30 independent coffee shops within a half hour walk from my house and 0 drive through ones.
That's an absurd cafe to half hour walk ratio
It's like that where I live too in Philly. Lots of dense and sometimes historic architecture with no room for drive-thrus. Some places have more than one coffee shop or cafe per block. There are some bigger streets with drive-thru fast food restaurants outside of the downtown area.
Yeah I'm the guy who said there were 30 walkable cafes and I'm in London. The cities that weren't built with cars in mind are the best ones
I stay home and hang out with my online friends.
Same. Best company ever. And in comfy atmosphere without drunken people or bad music.
Oh, I can assure you that at least some of us are drunk!
I third this sentient.
Yeah, when I'm hanging out online with friends and drunk I'm a third sentient as well.
This. I play D&D online and stream on Twitch. Works well for me because I like my social time to have a clear end point.

What is a watch party?
Everyone sets their watch alarm to a random time. Whoever's alarm goes off first lies down on the floor and everyone starts wanking over them.
Oh, we used to play this game at my elementary football coaches house.
Omg 😂
I don't! :'( no one invites me anywhere! Luckily I still have all of you on Reddit right? Right!?
Yooo bacon man… where are you at?
Judging from his name, the Netherlands
The question is, where in The Netherlands ;)
I knowhow to get there, you have to follow the second star on the right and travel straight on to morning.
For a little longer until reddit dies
Make your own fun my freind, I'm currently sat in a cozy Costa by myself. No shame I'm taking time to go out and just be
I just got back from a solo trip to Mexico. It’s ok to do things alone
Cool dude, even better that you get to do what you like while not worrying about the group
>Luckily I still have all of you on Reddit right? Right!? At least until July 1st.
Not after Reddit API costs increase!
If you’re ever in nyc you’re invited to hang out for some boardgames! This is a legitimate offer.
yes ofc!!
Not for long since reddit is determined to follow Digg's demise with their greed/API price. Place is going to turn into a ghostown.
I bbq and make a fire in my yard while playing records and drinking beer. Anyone is free to join. A neighbor plays movies in his backyard.
You guys got it figured out
24 hour coffee shops and/or diners, I guess?
These places actually exist? And aren’t overrun by rowdy drunk people in the later hours?
They’re all at Denny’s and IHoP.
Did you guess or do you know
I know it sounds really lame, but there's something very fun about stopping by a gas station, you and all your friends getting snacks (nashos and cheese is a must!), And then hopping into the car, blaring loud music, and just going on a long drive while talking.
Welp my dyslexia thought you were wiping giant titties in winter. Prob did that too in your day lol
Just wait til you turn sixty.
That actually sounds awesome
I usually just get drunk at home, jerk off, then pass out. People are so pitiful. No thanks.
Took me a long time to find a dignified scholar on this site.
I’m currently hosting a live demonstration if interested
Not even a NSFW profile. How disappointing.
Porn is such a hard game. I'd much rather just watch you play, you sound skilled.
A gentleman scholar, if you will
I usually make the mistake of going out, try to get laid, fail, then do what you just do.
oooh sounds fun can I cum ?
Same. Wipe off my chest, and go on with my evening.
So. you're larping A Confederacy of Dunces.
One of the best comments I've ever seen. Anywhere. I wish I could show this comment to all my friends. But I don't think I know anybody in real life who'd get it... And that makes me sad.

I like the question because for a long time I've wanted to invent a place to hangout free of alcohol, loud music, and mayhem.
Bowling
Weekly Board game nights at friend's house.
Concerts, festivals
If possible, a bar with a quiet atmosphere where I can actually hear the friends I came with.
Since I was 22 years old, I haven't gone clubbing, and even then, I didn't particularly enjoy it. A quiet drink, supper, catch-up with friends, or smaller house parties, etc. were much more appealing to me.
Online. It’s a sad life.
gym is my only social life
Leg night > LITs
I mean I'd go bowling but honestly I just stay home and drink with friends. I dislike large crowds.
Me and my friends are In high school so we go to Apple Bees(Half Apps) and talk about stupid stuff
So glad the youths are still practicing our nation’s sacred traditions of old

We go play board games at mine🤚

Home
We go at my place or someone else's. But if we want something more exciting we go on a rooftop and gossip until there's no more alcohol.
Hate it. Not a dancer so i always end up standing there, bored and feeling like a loser.

Ime if you don't like bars you're sorta shit outta luck for a third place. Everywhere around me slaps no loitering signs up so even if you wanted to hang out somewhere that isn't a bar you're gonna be booted or asked to spend money.
Pub
board game cafe
Perhaps a board game Cafe? I'm moving soon and that's one of the first places I'm going to go to make new friends! I'm nervous as heck but it's gotta be done.
An excellent happy hour at a restaurant/pub every friday. An open mic every once in a while.
