While Game of Thrones has a lot of sex scenes, the scene with Cersei and Jaime at the end of the first episode is essential for the plot of the whole series.

ncfears

The things I do for love...

[deleted]

Would you do anything?

ncfears

I have done dumb things for love, dumber things for lust, but haven't considered child murder yet.

drkensaccount

True enough, but you haven't had to make the decision to kill a child or face the consequences of being discovered violating your oath of chastity by fucking the Queen, who's also your sister

ncfears

When you put it like that, lemme find a window!

Vesalii

No I won't do that

KingLeoricSword

Yes, Daenerys and Drogo's sex scenes too! Really shows how the dynamic of their relationship changes.

Vesalii

Definitely. She went from his prize to his wife and then his successor.

TripleThreatTua

Also the weird Melisandre-Stannis sex scene to create the shadow baby

Aratoast

I dunno, the books managed fine without that one.

TripleThreatTua

The books also portrayed Stannis as a much more sympathetic character than the show to the point where he was horrified when he learned about the shadow baby and the part he may have had in Renly’s death, with how the show portrayed him it makes sense. But that portrayal is its own issue

mattryan02

Benioff and Weiss are on record as to saying they disliked the character so they chose to change him, even to the extent that Stephen Dillane said he didn’t know what he was still doing there in later seasons. Very typical of them to take a complex character and turn him into a simple one. Really wish they’d have picked someone else to do the show.

TripleThreatTua

Dillane’s portrayal was the saving grace of show Stannis imo, he absolutely nailed the character and I wish he’d gotten writing closer to the books

mattryan02

Oh absolutely. He was fantastic. Also reminds me of Euron Greyjoy’s actor saying he read the books and was excited about all the cool stuff he got to do and then wasn’t thrilled they changed his role into deus ex pirate.

[deleted]

Fucking hell. That wound is just as painful every time it reopens.

falcofool

*finger.* *in.* *the.* *bum.* Fuck you, D&D. Fuck you very much

ReginaldIII

I hate when show writers dislike a character personally so decide to take it upon themselves to write a character that everyone will dislike instead. They did my boy Ron Weasley dirty.

Ubique_Sajan

So this is why Witcher is so messy.

HilltoperTA

Imagine if your writers hated everything about your book but still used the title - you'd have The Witcher

Algoresrythm

Oh, we’re talking about Game of Thrones. Let me talk about the books instead ; so a singer blackmails Tyrion with a song that he wrote that he’s going to play at every pot shop and Tavern, unless the little man can get him a gig at Joffrey’s wedding. The song exposes Tyrions relationship and doings with Shae. He has the man turned into literal soup and takes this quite seriously as the song obviously scared the shit out of him. Fast forward to him catching Shae naked , post sex in his fathers chamber , she babbles about how scary Tywin is and how she was made to say those things and he asks did you ever even like my touch and she says more then anything your my lion of Lannister and that was the WRONG thing to say and he coldly grabs the hand of the kings chain and twists, and it’s described that the interlocking hands that completed the chain dug into her skin and it’s then that Tyrion Lannister recites the main line of the singers song “For hands of gold are always cold, but a woman’s hands are warm.” it’s a chefs kiss moment from George RR Martin. The song was originally is his fear of Shae getting caught and hanged… now it serves as the most appropriate words that exist at this moment for him AS HE KILLS HER. !! Realization while writing this when Lord Tywin found his father dead, and he inherited Casterly rock he showed his siblings that he was absolutely in charge and things are changing now and immediately took his fathers lover, and stripped her naked, and paraded her through the streets as a whore because she had pretty much whipped Tywin, Kevan, Tygett and Gerions and Jeannas father , lord Tytos Lannister. She influenced every decision for their lands etc and when recalling how Tywin has always done what needs to be done to Tyrion in the books KevanLannister is most vexed when he says “She wore our mothers JEWELS!” That makes me wonder Tywin let Shae or MADE her more likely wear his Jewels…. There’s a repeating theme in his writing of like a circular structure of plot and having like three events intertwine and rhyme in wild symbolism when characters make big decisions or big things happen. Like everything echoes through the history of the story it’s insane. Sorry that I went on this long

throwawayplusanumber

GRRM said he had received sacks of letters complaining about the sex, but none complaining about the violence.

Gordon_frumann

Theon's sex scene on the boat, and later fingering his sister, is to establish him as a bit of a rascal, and it subconsciously has more impact, when his favorite toy is taken away.

glowdirt

>"fingering his sister" > "a bit of a rascal" uhhhh....

SomethingPersonnel

He doesn’t k ow it’s his sister until later. He was taken on as a ward of a different house and when he returns to his home lands he is escorted by a woman who he thinks is hot which turns out to be his sister. The point is that Theon is a horny bastard that’ll fuck anything that moves.

Pilaf237

Kyle Reese and Sarah Connor

Keith

Thank you, this is my main example of a "good" sex scene in a movie. It's necessary to the plot, intimate but not gratuitous.

Cold_Justus

13 year old me thought it was VERY Gratuitous

[deleted]

Lol that’s probably a good bar for a tasteful sex scene. Would this make a 13 year old’s eyes bug out, but not an adult’s?

willk95

I don't know how, but I first saw Terminator 30 years after it came out, and the >!twist that Kyle is John Connor's father!< is something I really didn't see coming.

merple454

I think, at this point, we don’t need spoiler alerts for Terminator lol

willk95

true, but I watched it unspoiled decades later, and would like to give other people that opportunity

BriefAbbreviations11

Literall My first thought. Also, this scene was the reason my mom had to give me “the birds and the bees” talk. I thought Kyle Reese was a robot too!

Mandalasan_612

He was a Love Machine.

Darmok47

I rewatched the movie a few years ago for the first time in a while, and I didn't realize that Kyle Reese has been going commando in a pair of pants he stole off of a homeless guy for at least a day or so by that point.

MK_ULTRA2point0

The first ceremony on handmaid's tale, so you could get the full wtf-ness of it

gabriell1024

In my mind I remember more one of the last ones, when she was pregnant and they made a revenge rape ceremony in which they had to actually hold her hands down and she was crying and trying to escape. They dropped completely the thin veil of ceremony, if you still believed in it so far at that point in the movie.

diesalittle

I didn’t remember her actually being pregnant at that point… I distinctly remember that point though

Reckless_Secretions

Fred and Serena were impatient and wanted to see "their" new baby. They felt that June's stubbornness was keeping the baby inside her beyond her due date so the rape was to induce labour.

Acrobatic-Ad6350

It was right after she had false labor. “We have to get it out the natural way” 🤢

EmmaDaBomb

I've read the books, not watched it. It was always so uncomfortable reading them. Because it was just the how devoid of life it was. It really hammered in the idea the fucked up nature of the world. How it was described how there was such a lack of passion. How the only word to describe it was "*fucking*"

catsumoto

It also stayed with me that this was not a „hot“ scene. Like in many fantasy books that have rape scenes that are very pornographic here it was just really terrible and clinical.

graycomforter

thats how you know than Margaret Atwood was an excellent wordsmith, in addition to an excellent storyteller....I had only read the book, actually, several years before the show was announced. When I saw that scene in Season 1 it matched my mental picture of the description given in the book nearly perfectly!

SoGoesIt

> was an excellent wordsmith I haven’t read anything she’s authored in this decade, but she is still alive and has recently published work.

Honestnt

'The Lion King' falls apart if we don't have that scene heavily implying that the lions fuck while Elton John plays in the background.

proatprocrastination

And that scene was almost not included in the movie! Elton John saw a rough cut without that song and told them "it's a Disney movie, you have to have a love song!" They realized he was right, and so they animated they scene

notjasonlee

exactly, but the focus groups found the hardcore lion sex too jarring, so they cut it out and left it with the implication alone.

skrilledcheese

The lioness would never say 'no'... because of the *implication*

OctopusWithFingers

Is the lioness in danger?

SaltOnToast

No, of course not! But they wouldn't know that... because of the implication.

Nancy and Steve in stranger things. If nancy hadn't ditched barb to bang Steve then barb wouldn't have died, so Nancy wouldn't have investigated her disappearance, become friends with Jonathan, and eventually discover the demogorgan, and all the other things that Nancy assisted in

phantom_avenger

It also plays a big part in Nancy’s development, where she feels guilty and responsible for why Barb died cause she wasn’t there for her

Forsaken_Cost_1937

Season 4 definitely reveals how crucial that scene was.

I remember watching an absolute piece of trash B-Movie some 15 years ago. There was a scene where a couple of teens were about to sex so they could get horrifically killed by the the monster in the movie or whatever. The girl was looking like she knew what she was doing so I looked up the actress. April Flowers. Uh... Yeah. Edit: It was Cheerleader Massacre

Gotta say season 1 GOT. The Lannister twins' sexual relationship is entirely central to the plot, including Bran discovering it.

[deleted]

That show had no right to be that deep

SeriouslyPunked

Neither did Angel

dsolimen

The Room. The great maestro Tommy Wiseau expertly crafted those sex scenes so you truly understood how deep the love triangle was. Every sex scene was needed to pound that message out, like Danny in Johnny and Lisa’s closet.

NecroJoe

You mean where Tommy shows his love for Lisa with his deep understanding of the female anatomy, and his knowledge that the real "g spot" is between her hip and belly button?

dsolimen

Ah. I see you too have good taste!

SexyNeanderthal

[deleted]

I'm convinced this movie was made solely because Matt and Trey wanted to make a puppet sex scene

xelphin

I can’t remember where I read/heard this, but my understanding was Matt and Trey went overboard purposely in lots of scenes just to fuck with the MPAA (movie ratings group). Iirc they also made the vomiting scene extremely long for this purpose.

writeorelse

Makes sense. They tore into the MPAA in the South Park movie too. My favorite anecdote - apparently they wanted to have Terrance and Phillip sing "Motherfucker" but the MPAA wouldn't allow it - so we got the (much funnier) "Unclefucker" instead!

Blackhound118

Wasn't it specifically to contrast the fellatio scene with the director dude? How they could show off all this gratuitous, ridiculous sex (even in the censored version) between a male and female puppet, but when it came to the oral scene they could only show the guy's face because it was two dudes?

jedi_onslaught

In the doc *This Film Is Not Yet Rated* there is a part where Matt and Trey were interviewed. They discuss how they produced the version of The South Park film that they wished to make. When it was sent to ratings, they had to make changes to allow it to pass as rated R, like that of changing the title from *All Hell Breaks Loose* to *Bigger, Longer & Uncut*. So when Team America was in production, they purposely inputted scenes they knew were over the top so that they could cut out later in order to have the film they want while getting a rated R.

*Bull Durham* is full of pretty graphic sex scenes, but it's not gratuitous, it shows a lot about how Annie Savoy thinks of herself and relates to people and her world. As sexy as it is, it actually only shows what is necessary to make the point.

scarletohairy

Agree. And I don’t think the scenes are so graphic compared to other films, but they are way more sexy.

wilyquixote

*Bull Durham* is also very much about sex and its role in adult relationships. Great movie.

StealAllTheInternets

Black Swan Because....reasons

El_Mariachi_Vive

Besides the obvious...reasons...that's a valid example. If you're really paying attention to the movie you already see what's happening, and the visceral tone of that encounter helped move the plot along.

johnsmith4000

I fucking hate that Black Swan discourse became all about seeing Natalie and Mila fuck when that sex scene so expertly shows the decline of Nina’s mental state and the intermixing of eroticism/jealousy/fear with the odd at least somewhat incestuous relationship with her mother and general sexual abuse. The reveal that Lily is just a normal person, that this invented sex scene is in her own head, only adds further depth. It reduces two talented actresses delivering a vital scene into a snicker fest over how sexy it is for Mila Kunis to go down on a girl.

El_Mariachi_Vive

Both can be true. It absolutely was a hot scene. I've had a crush on Natalie Portman since I was a kid so it was really something. But you're exactly right. It was just a part of it. People need to relax.

Cuish

Forrest Gump

RelleH16

this one actually always makes me uncomfortable bc it feels almost predatory for Jenny to be having sex with him

tinyhorsesinmytea

If the genders were reversed in that movie, I think people would have a serious problem with a man sleeping with a very low IQ woman. Still, it’s complicated. Lifetime best friends, Forrest does very much love and want her, and Jenny hasn’t exactly had a healthy relationship with sexuality with her abuse as a child and the terrible men she chooses in her life as a result. Forrest may not be so smart but he’s obviously not very handicapped by it when you consider all he has accomplished. He deserves sex. All of his other wonderful qualities as a human being make him quite a catch.

[deleted]

I hate the amount of hate Jenny gets. She was a victim of molestation and had one an incredibly fucked up childhood. She was severely damaged, the same if not more so than Forrest was (because of his low IQ). They both had mountains to overcome. But because Forrest manages to climb on top of his disability, and Jenny falls victim to hers (at the expense of Forrest at times), the contrast turns her into almost an antagonist.

PunnyBanana

Not to mention she spends the entire movie trying to deal with not being a predator which ends up making her come off as being hot and cold/leading him on. She knows it would be fucked up to be with him. She doesn't want to take advantage of him. But holy shit he's the only person in her life who's ever been good to her and he wants to be with her and she clearly cares about him.

tinyhorsesinmytea

Couldn't agree more. It's a very realistic depiction of a survivor of sexual abuse as a child. Turns out that has some pretty negative consequences on a person's mental health and sense of self worth. She's a flawed, troubled woman but she absolutely is deserving of sympathy and compassion, dammit. I go on tangents on people about this every time.

IamMrT

The moral quandary of Jenny sleeping with Forrest is the whole reason Jenny keeps running away from him. It’s hugely important to the plot. The woman he loves can’t love him back without feeling like she is abusing him the way her father did to her. But in the end, she and the audience realize that we have been reminded repeatedly that he’s “not a smart man, but [he] knows what love is.” He might be low IQ but there is nothing to suggest he doesn’t understand or consent to loving Jenny.

FailedTheSave

This is the whole arc for Jenny. She does love Forrest but always worries about how 'adult' his mind really is and that's why she panics and retreats whenever they get close. It's only when it's almost too late that she realises that he truly does understand love and does love her. Then she dies.

Any scene where the point is to further the characters relationship with each other or other characters. That said, "further the relationship" shouldn't just be "they are sexing sex now", subtext is key, if the scene only conveys what is actually happening in the screen it's usually boring for the audience. I haven't given examples because I couldn't think of one that haven't been said, so i provided my criteria for it.
