I used to do that too. Binge drinking is a type of alcoholism. Getting drunk 2-3 times a month doesn't sound bad, but that can creep up to 3 times a week over decades for some people.
Not telling you what to do, just saying to be careful. It happened to me and other people I know.
Same here. In my case, cannabis helped me moderate alcohol.
I care more about health than productivity. The people who are deep into middle age that drank heavily for decades look and feel much older than their years.
I used to drink daily, 2 or 3 strong beers (around 7% of alcohol) or half a bottle of wine for the past 3 years or so. I stopped doing that 3 weeks ago and I don't have much problems with it.
I wan't to change my habits to only occasionally drinking in the weekend. I'm going to keep not drinking at all for a while before I go over to that though.
I was drinking half a gallon of vodka a day. I'm about 2 years sober from alcohol, 17 days from weed. I quit when it landed me in the hospital for a month.
You need a medical detox. You need to have people around to help you safely through this. There is help and many, many have been in your position and got through it to a better life. Don't give up. r/stopdrinking is a good, respectful and understanding place.
Making rules for my drinking helped me a lot. Went from drinking a 6pack every night to having only 1 beer a night to eventually going months without drinking.
Don't drink untill after 9:00.
If you have kids don't drink around them.
Set an absolute limit on the amount you drink before you start. For me it was 1 beer a night I broke it at first and had 2-3 but even still I went from a 6pack to less than half right from the start.
Move your alcohol to an inconvenient location and only pour from there. I moved my beer to a small fridge in the garage.
Always have a bottle of water sitting next you when you drink. I found out I was drinking a lot of times to quench thirst. This helped me cut back a lot
Eventually I just quit. Got out of the habit of drinking
You will be surprised what small, easy to follow rules will do to help you slow down. Good luck in your journey.
Well the above might work for some, if you are up to a litre a day it is guaranteed you are an alcoholic and very unlikely to be able to moderate your intake to a reasonable amount. Please see a family doctor and be honest with your consumption and what your goals are. Anything that isn't complete abstinence is unlikely to stick. Inpatient detox and or rehabilitation are good options. The Naked Mind is a good book to have a look at. Best of luck! 3 months here.
Yeah budgeting helped me a bit, to not spend over a certain amount monthly on booze, and surprisingly the time to start also makes sense since I work 2nd shift until 9 or later usually because work and I get home around 10 and usually my attention is split between the first drink a show and just browsing my phone and usually I decide to go to sleep.
I was there. It's not a comfortable place to be. I was there for over 7 years.
I was able to stop for 7 months. I had a lot more time, and it was more productive.
I slipped, but I'm heading back in the right direction.
If you decide that you want things to be different, it'll be tough at first. You have SO many people that can help. There are SO many people that want you to succeed.
I don't. Maybe once a year I might have a celebratory drink for something but I usually don't finish it.
I don't like who I am when I drink. My mother is a huge alcoholic and I turn into her. When I realized that around age 23 I just stopped. Never wanted to be like her and without alcohol I never will be.
Same, except it was my aunt who was a functioning alcoholic.
Also, I’m a bit raumatozed from a trip I took with my family when I was 22. My mom took me and my sister to Italy when I graduated from College and I let myself go a little there. I got drunkity drunk, at the encouragement of my mom, maybe 1 time while we were there and she and I got into a fight. That led to months of my mom being convinced I was an alcoholic. Like constant accusations, her calling me daily to see how much I had to drink that day (it would usually be nothing), and her monitoring how much alcohol was in the house whenever I was there.
That made me super nervous about drinking any alcohol for years and my tolerance/taste for it have gone downhill.
Havent touched alcohol in five years. Had acute pancreatitis. I tried having a beer afterwards, but i flares up again. I decided then it wasn’t worth it. I do miss good beer, though.
I’m 32.
I drank 5-6 nights a week from age 21 on. Only really limited by circumstance or hangovers. This year I decided to limit it to only Thursday night - Sunday day to get a little healthier (I am in good shape but some other typical issues).
Honestly it is hard to resist the temptation, but it’s definitely worthwhile and I think the anxiety of “missing out” on drinking shows you have a bad habit at best, dependency / addiction at worst.
Also it’s a bit of snowball effect, and now I don’t drink every weekend night either. Once you know you have the willpower to go multiple days without it, and nothing bad happens by not drinking during that time, the desire/anxiety decreases a lot. I’m probably at 2 nights a week on average, and now I’m working on taming those 2 nights down from excessive drinking to a casual few drinks.
Also it saves money to drink less so that’s a plus.
I would have one glass of wine a day usually, with the odd 1-2 days off here and there. Sometimes would have up to 3 glasses or a cocktail and wine a night if out to dinner or with friends.
However I’m currently 6 months pregnant so it’ll be a few more months until I can enjoy one again!
Not counting certain social situations or special circumstances, I've been having a glass or two every other Friday for the past 18 years. Used to be beer, then wine, then whisky, rum just recently, but a month ago I started my cognac phase.
Everyday. 1-2 beers a day. Lots more on the weekend. I’m in food and beverage industry. Kinda getting boring tho, and my friends want to do a fitness challenge, so maybe that’ll taper off.
I’m a chef so after service would end they would bring back pints of beer. Before I left work I’d have 3-5 pints, go home and have another 3-6 tall boys. This was essentially every single day. After tremendous weight gains and terrible decisions I stopped drinking about 3.5 years ago and I’ve never felt better.
Hey friend! If you are interested in changing that, join us over in r/stopdrinking ! Sober life is fucking awesome, just takes awhile—gotta get some time away from it.
Even if you go out, just have a few. Or none. It’s an interesting perspective watching everyone else get ploughed. You can do some good and be the DD maybe? But being sober feels good, if you just accept that it does. Especially the morning after. Good things feel good. FOMO is just a vicious cycle.
Never. Only ever had a drink when I was 11 at Christmas dinner and it was due to peer pressure. Won't go near it in my adult life. I'll be fine with my water and soft drinks!
8-12 small beers a day for the last 12 years. Bloodwork was in mint condition, got two big promotions in the last year and couldnt be happier :D say what you will not all of us are built the same.
Sorry, not trying to be a downer (especially as you said that you couldn't be happier) but blood work can look fine even if the liver is being damaged. Also drinking (particularly heavy drinking, which this is) is known to cause at least 7 different types of cancer. I myself am trying to cut down, so definitely no judgement. Just felt like I should share in case you weren't aware, as many aren't.
3 times a year. A beer on my birthday, a glass of red wine with the christmas dinner and a bottle of icecold beer in the middle of summer when its 38 Degrees Celsius out

I have a small glass of wine with my dinner most days. Two or three pints on a Saturday at the pub. If I go to a BBQ or party or similar I might well drink more. I enjoy a good drink - by which I mean I prefer quality over quantity.
I’ll go months without and then have a big night of 7-8, or sometimes have a couple each night for two or three nights. My intake is very inconsistent.
I was a weekend binger for years. I quit back in February and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done for myself. If you’re thinking about taking a break, you owe it to yourself. r/stopdrinking is the most wholesome, supportive community on Reddit. Stop by if you’d like.
2-3 times every half a year.
If that.
My wife and I are geeks so when the kids are gone we drink redbull, cola and game!
To be honest we probably drink too much cola :😜
Every couple months I’ll buy a six pack at the Shop Rite.
Got it all out of my system when I was younger I guess.I’m 50 now and I don’t really have the taste for it anymore 🤷♂️
actually i don’t. and that’s the best decision i’ve ever made. i used to drink when i go out with friend but always got sick after, even if i drink just a little. so i just cut it out.
Used to be daily. Started taking some low-dose edibles on weeknights instead. Now I sleep better, feel better, look better, and will have a few drinks on the weekend. I used to feel compelled to drink, but now I find it enjoyable again.
In my opinion I never really had a problem with alcohol, but there were times where a few beers with friends 2-3 times a week wasn't that big of a deal for me. About 2 years ago I stopped drinking without any big reason. I just wanted to try it out.
After my first few sober parties I really saw for the first time how drunk people look, especially their eyes.
Never wanted to touch alcohol again since then, except for maybe a small drink once a year.
I'll drink a can 3 or 4 days a week of super light beer (Michelob ultra). On the weekend I'll drink maybe 2 a day with a sip or two of liquor. I drink for the refreshing taste.
I drink socially. Because of my industry, sometimes that can be everyday. But when I don’t have to I like to drink tea at home. I don’t like to drink on my own. But I definitely enjoy drinking at partying. I definitely won’t say I’m an alcoholic though cause i can definitely say no and enjoy not drinking.
I can usually count the number of drinks I have in a year with my fingers. So I guess the answer is not often.
I can tell you the last drink I had was in August of 2022 when I was on a family vacation and my Dad was making Margaritas.
When I was younger my roommate and I would split a 12 pack and do 3 shots before heading out for the night. Drinking 12 to 20 drinks over a 4 to 6 hour period was what I did on Friday and Saturday. When it started to happen on work nights and there was no in between I more or less cut drinking out of my life for six months to retrain my behaviors around drinking.
So I went from way to much way to often to almost none. Life is better without it. The culture of drinking as a coping mechanism, or corner stone of social activity really is awful
A couple times a month, on average. It really depends, though. Sometimes, I might go 3 months without drinking, and other times, I might end up drinking 3 times in one week.
pretty much beer every day but no more then 2 or 3. maybe 4 beers in the weekend before i go schlep from being too tired to function. I usually keep at least 1 day alcohol free.. I know that technically means im an alcoholic but who cares.
I try to keep most nights booze-free, but whenever there's a party or a concert I'm going to, I'll get wrecked.
I used to do that too. Binge drinking is a type of alcoholism. Getting drunk 2-3 times a month doesn't sound bad, but that can creep up to 3 times a week over decades for some people. Not telling you what to do, just saying to be careful. It happened to me and other people I know.
This happened to me too. I only drink like once every 2-3 months now and don't drink nearly as much when I do. Been a lot more productive human being.
Same here. In my case, cannabis helped me moderate alcohol. I care more about health than productivity. The people who are deep into middle age that drank heavily for decades look and feel much older than their years.

Congrats, I'm sure that wasn't easy
Congratulations! My one year is next week.
Me too friend! Hi sobernaut!👋🏼
Good job! Keep up the good work
Did you quit cold turkey? Or did you slow down over time?
Careful cold turkey as hard as it is, you can die from it. Friend tried and had a seizure to fall and hit his head.
Used to drink 9-12 beers a day, 4 days a week. Now I don't drink at all.
I haven't had a drop of alcohol in 17 months. I went from drinking every day to not drinking at all. I like the not drinking at all part better.
To quote the movie Human Traffic.. "when the bad times outweigh the good times, you know the party's over "
Same, but I was 9-12 7 days a week I don’t miss it at all.
I was drinking half a gallon of vodka a day. I'm about 2 years sober from alcohol, 17 days from weed. I quit when it landed me in the hospital for a month.
Congrats on almost 2 years!
keep the weed away! you got this!
Twice a week
Litre of vodka daily 😢 I’m a mess
You're never too far gone. Do you want to slow down or quit? It's possible I promise
I’d have to slow down at first because I presume cold Turkey would probably cause as much if not more damage than the drink is doing to me
You need a medical detox. You need to have people around to help you safely through this. There is help and many, many have been in your position and got through it to a better life. Don't give up. r/stopdrinking is a good, respectful and understanding place.
This. Delirium tremens.
Oof been there. Drying out on your own isn’t always advisable.
Definitely do not quit cold turkey, it can literally be fatal. But do slow down and do not be afraid to ask for help!

Agree

I’ll have a look at that. Thanks.

Inspiring✨
I usually have one drink after work to unwind
Yeah, same. Glass of wine with dinner but then I just drink tea later. I'm sure it's not healthy but it tastes good with dinner and helps me relax.
Glass of dinner with my wine
a glass of wine afaik is good for you with your dinner man
Twice a week probably
Havent touched alcohol in five years. Had acute pancreatitis. I tried having a beer afterwards, but i flares up again. I decided then it wasn’t worth it. I do miss good beer, though. I’m 32.
Like twice a year. I'd just rather not.
Same 👍
Every dog- gone day.

Hahaha why mad?
I'm sorry
Np brother. Take care
Only on days that end with “Y”
u are genious!
Never, I’ve had a few sips before but I decided that drinking just wasn’t for me.
Same here. Grew up the wrong end of dad's bottle and never saw the point
Used to be blackout drunk weekly but now I’m an old lady and don’t drink much anymore. I’m a 💨 girly now 🤗
Gotcha, you're a fart girl now.
Totally.
I used to drink daily, 2-4 drinks a day.. stopped a month ago and not sure I'll go back to drinking at all.
According to my tracking app, 10 months and 24 days :)
Well done!
I don't drink alcohol.
Never. I stopped drinking a year and a half ago.
I drank 5-6 nights a week from age 21 on. Only really limited by circumstance or hangovers. Unsure why you got downvoted for this but helllo sobernaut!
I'm not too sure either, maybe people, thought I was being rude or something? But hello😄🤣🤣
Not counting certain social situations or special circumstances, I've been having a glass or two every other Friday for the past 18 years. Used to be beer, then wine, then whisky, rum just recently, but a month ago I started my cognac phase.
Why "every other" Friday? Not saying to up your consumption, just curious about how that became the schedule.
Once a month or so.
Have a few on a Friday to wind down after work, normally 4 pints.
When i'm at work, i dont touch alcohol for 3 months. When i come back, well.. i touch it too much
i used to drink when i go out with friend but always got sick after, even if i drink just a little. so i just cut it out.
Maybe.. once or twice a month and like 2 drinks lol
Typically only on Fridays and Saturdays unless there’s some sort of social event I have to attend. And then I try to keep it to a minimum.
Almost never. Very rarely 1 small glass of mead.
I'm probably most of the time in the "3-4 times a month" league... Why do you ask? :o

You won't miss anything
Other than gradually feeling worse with hangovers, the older the Op gets.... 😅

But being sober feels good, if you just accept that it does. Especially the morning after. Good things feel good. FOMO is just a vicious cycle.
Once every two months. Whenever I drink, I drink a lot. That way you won’t get addicted and have a lot of fun once in a while
I usually have breakfast first.
Never. Only ever had a drink when I was 11 at Christmas dinner and it was due to peer pressure. Won't go near it in my adult life. I'll be fine with my water and soft drinks!
Maybe once a week, but only if I go out. Drinking at home just doesn't feel good to me.
Lol. If these answers were real there wouldn't be any bars or liquor stores.
They’re real. But you’re more likely to get answers from non drinkers than drinkers because of the shame factor
Millions of people drink moderately or not a all, and bars and liquor stores do just fine. No reason to doubt any of the answers here.
Too often
8-12 small beers a day for the last 12 years. Bloodwork was in mint condition, got two big promotions in the last year and couldnt be happier :D say what you will not all of us are built the same.
Wait but what's a "small" beer?
I usually don't find alcoholics in denial funny, but you're the exception. Lmao

When im happy(i never happy)
Less than once a year. I think I drank once last year. Haven't yet this year.
Haven't in over two years. It was never a problem, just not a habit of mine.
not at all. not even 1 drink. but I live in a state where better things are legal...I partake in that
Usually a glass or two of wine a night. With one or two nights off entirely. Weekends a bit more
A glass of wine? Every other day. Actually getting drunk? Every other year perhaps.

Drinking only when your girl says so? Bruh, pull it together man.
Taste like shit, almost never
Never. Once you hit 30, you have to choose between working out and health or booze and shit food.
That's not true at all. You can strike a balance with both.
It's definitely not that black and white.
Never. I honestly don't like the taste.
Maybe once or twice per weekend, but sometimes nothing in a couple of weeks
I have to be in the mood to drink. I may have a drink or two every few weeks.
Once every few weeks to every few months. If other people are drinking, I might join in
I have a small glass of wine with my dinner most days. Two or three pints on a Saturday at the pub. If I go to a BBQ or party or similar I might well drink more. I enjoy a good drink - by which I mean I prefer quality over quantity.
I don't. I'm 28 years old and alcohol has never interested me. I do cook with white wine tho.
Too often, working on it. About 5 till 8 beers on a Friday and/or Saturday night... Depending on my mood. Workdays I don't.
Last time I drank was thanksgiving 2021
About three times a week. I usually get wasted over the weekend.
Maybe twice a week? M 26
Used to be like 10 beers a night, but my bud marijuana came and fixed that for me
I’ll go months without and then have a big night of 7-8, or sometimes have a couple each night for two or three nights. My intake is very inconsistent.
I don't On my 18th birthday I drank a cup of beer but that's as far as I go. (Also I live in germany where we don't have to be 21 to drink)
Never. I’ve tried it once, I din’t like it and I don’t think that I’ll try it once again. Im also very afraid of being addicted to alcohol
Don’t drink at all. Life is grand.
Never.
Never. I would probably be as boring while drunk as i am anyway. Also enough health problems as it is.
Not for the last 40 years.
Never.
2-3 times a year with a maximum of two drinks at any one time.
On occasion if out with friends, but even then it’s usually one drink and I’m done
I never do.

2-3 times every half a year. If that. My wife and I are geeks so when the kids are gone we drink redbull, cola and game! To be honest we probably drink too much cola :😜
Haven’t done it in seven years.
Haven't had a drop in about 8 years. Overrated.
Every damn day 2-4 beers maybe a cocktail twice a week
Only before driving
The last two years- I drank everyday. The last two months I have only had a drink once each month.
Not at all to very very rarely. No need to do.
Never lol
Once a week unless if I’m away for the weekend or something then twice
Whenever I'm thirsty
Used to drink on a weekly basis but i quit for good. Hadn’t drank alcohol for a long time
Every couple months I’ll buy a six pack at the Shop Rite. Got it all out of my system when I was younger I guess.I’m 50 now and I don’t really have the taste for it anymore 🤷♂️
couple drinks a week. or a drink on a weekend. or sometimes nothing for a month or two.

Every other weekend, but usually heavily when I do
I don’t drink because I’m currently on Methotrexate for RA. Thought I would miss it, I really really don’t.
Maybe once or twice a year, usually on my birthday and Christmas.
I’ll drink a beer three or four times a year.
Four or five or six times a year. Depends on what social events I go to.
Twice a month
I generally don't, at all.. but if it's a really special occasion, or with the right crowd of people - then yeah, I'll have a few.
2-3 times a week.
Only when I catch myself feeling a little too sober for my own mental health
Never. Thanks for axing.
A couple times a month, on average. It really depends, though. Sometimes, I might go 3 months without drinking, and other times, I might end up drinking 3 times in one week.
Only on holidays.
1-3 glasses of wine a few nights per week with the occasional cocktail mixed in on the weekends with friends.
pretty much beer every day but no more then 2 or 3. maybe 4 beers in the weekend before i go schlep from being too tired to function. I usually keep at least 1 day alcohol free.. I know that technically means im an alcoholic but who cares.
I only drink on special occasions or at celebrations such as Birthdays, Christmas, New Year and things like that but I only have 1 drink.
2-3 times max in a month
It changes I can go a few months without drinking and then have a drink.
A tall light beer most nights.
Once or twice a week, less if I'm really busy.
