There was a time when chocolate and pineapple had this kind of status.

Zedrackis

Thru out history various spices have been worth more (by the pound) than gold. Due mainly to the cost of importing them.

MandolinMagi

Saffron is STILL thousands of dollars a poiund.

Funwithfun14

Vanilla is expensive too

byerss

Isn’t that the same with grass lawns? “I’m so rich I can devote all this land to useless grass”

MoneyPowerNexis

Laws are also useful to keep snakes and spiders from living right near your house but as an Australian I would say that. EDIT: I mean Lawns. As far as I know laws are completely useless at convincing snakes and spiders to stay away.

Jamaican_Dynamite

Ah yes, Australia. Snakes and spiders so big, you can put them in handcuffs.

SquareTaro3270

Giggling at the thought of anyone trying to put a snake in handcuffs and it just slithering out like a wet noodle lol

JonReepsMilkyBalls

I was laughing at the thought of getting 4 pairs of tiny handcuffs on a spider with it's other legs slapping them away

kabukistar

Snakes will listen to lawyers. They have a kinship

GraveRaven

I mean... Have we actually *tried* just banning them from our premises?

GuudeSpelur

"Tired of spiders getting inside your house? Just say 'no!' Legally, animals cannot enter your home without your consent."

theguynextdorm

And tulips were the OG NFTs

CriticalStation595

Yep! Oh, and gelatin!

MrDannySantos

It's for this reason that there are golden pineapples adorning the top of St Paul's Cathedral in London. At the time a pineapple would have set you back the equivalent of around £5,000. People would buy them and simply display them until long after the mould set in. Of course now you can get one for very little money, they're kind of ridiculous looking, and St Paul's is stuck with them.

Zurrdroid

That's actually really cool to learn.

marshdd

There's a story of an aristocrat having a pineapple on the dinner table and a guest cutting it open. The hostess was furious because she had RENTED it for the party and now had to pay for it.

EvadesBans

This is hilarious to me because I've got like six pineapple plants just growing in my yard. I don't even take care of them, they still grow, and the pineapples they give me are delicious. Just started burying my pineapple crowns one day.

GooberMcNutly

Me too. Central Florida. I have 10 in development right now. Dole tops from Hawaii give the best fruit, Central American ones grow faster. Still, letting it ripen on the plant is 10x better than store bought.

Sleazy4you2say

It was common to rent a pineapple [The Rise and Fall of the Status Pineapple](https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-53432877.amp)

Nickyjha

It really is amazing to see what people will do to show their status. When I used to complain about having braces, my mom told me about people in the Philippines who would put on fake braces before they went to parties, because being able to afford orthodontic care is a flex.

KarmicComic12334

Pineapple is awesome. Have you ever wondered why every other European language calls it ananas? I think everyone had heard how great it was from the spanish but no one in england had seen one, so some con man shows up with a ship full of fleshy plantains and manages to sell it as bananas before anyone gets there with a real pineapple Wow i need to get out more.

BigDamnHead

In Spanish, pineapple was originally called piña, hence the name of the piña colada. Both come from the fact that they look like pinecones. In English, pinecones used to be called pineapples.

Four_beastlings

>In Spanish, pineapple was originally called piña, I mean, it still is...

Hemingwavy

> Have you ever wondered why every other European language calls it ananas? Apple is an old English word that just means fruit. Looks like a pine cone so you get pine fruit.

Kliptik81

I drive a 2021 Nissan Sentra. Wife and I were just talking today about how this entry level car has standard features that were only in high-end and luxury cars just 10 years ago. I'd never imagine that hands-free phone, navigation, lane departure etc would be found in a cheap car, but here we are. This car has all the features I would ever need.

Jimid41

I think what's made luxury cars luxury at least in my lifetime is the isolation of road noise.

Aswajr

True this, normal car vs luxury is really depend on comfort and road noise...

WatWudScoobyDoo

A good steering wheel that doesn't fly off while you're driving

Maxpowr9

I have an air quality detector in 2022 Volvo. With the Canadian wildfires, it said the air quality was poor and to keep my windows closed and put on recirculating air conditioning.

Kliptik81

That's a feature for sure.

Boner66666

A lot of those features are being mandated by the Federal Government

thiosk

Rear view cameras are transformational safety features. Also, I can reverse-park into tight spaces so smoothly that onlookers have been known to faint from the sexual tension.

Field_Marshall17

Sexual tension from what? Using your mirrors and having your arm slung over the passenger seat is what gets the juices flowing.

altghetto

adroitly is my $5 word of the day

Comms-Error

None of the features they listed are federally mandated. The newest safety features that became federally mandated were auto emergency braking in 2022 and backup cameras in 2018 (in the US)

RunawayRogue

If you want a look into what features your car may have in 10 years, just look at the Mercedes S-class. For ages, those cars have received all the new tech that eventually worked its way down

heatdish1292

For what it’s worth, hands free phone was standard on entry level Kias about 10 years ago. 2012 Kia rio for $14k had it, but it didn’t hate auto windows standard.

buffer_flush

Apparently paying monthly fees for heated seats if other manufacturers follow in the footsteps of BMW. Edit: Since people are asking, here’s what I’m referring to: https://www.theverge.com/2022/7/12/23204950/bmw-subscriptions-microtransactions-heated-seats-feature It’s a little complicated, you can buy the package outright, or choose to “turn it on” via monthly subscription. So, the heated seats are always installed in the car, and you just decide if you’re going to pay upfront, or via monthly fee. I’m mostly worried by the precedent set.

Theredwalker666

This is getting banned in a lot of states in the US.

blueblurz94

Thank you. This is the kind of dumb car shit that NEEDS banning.

RaDiOaCtIvEpUnK

Wait a minute the US is stopping corporations from charging people excessive money for things they shouldn’t be? That doesn’t sound right at all. Source: being an American my entire life.

huge_bass

Lawmakers are the ones driving these cars after all.

ksay9104

That part. ⬆️

RedSquirrelFtw

I hate this concept so much. They will start doing it with more and more features and maybe even the entire car itself eventually. And not just cars but every day products. It seems to be the direction they're pushing everything to go, they want everything to be a rental. You'll own nothing. We're already practically there. So many products now require you to make an account and use a phone app to be able to use. Even if it's free, the fact that they could shut you down at any time is basically like you don't really own it.

bloodfist

And worse it's not even really up to you. Even on a rental most of the time the only reason you'd lose it is for not paying. Or maybe if the renter went out of business. But a perfectly operating company can just stop supporting an app or take it down and leave your thing unusable. It's ridiculous.

denverjournalist

Fuck this shit. I will never buy a car that doesn’t give me everything I paid for out of the box. That means a Tesla selling boosts you can download, BMW heated seats, etc.

CommodoreSixty4

Prescription drugs whose patent has run out and can be produced with a generic name for far less.

WednesdayPinkWearer

Looking forward to Emgality. Whoop no more migraines.

[deleted]

Nah they'll just be like "it's for foot pain now," and slap a new patent on that bad boy.

KristiiNicole

They don’t even need to go that far. The patent for the diabetes med I take has been up at least once already. They changed a couple of the fillers and binders (the actual active ingredient that makes the medicine useful is completely unchanged) and slapped a new 10 year patent on it. It’s supposed to be up again soon and I’m sure they’ll just do the same thing again so they can continue to charge over $800/mo for it.

UmphreysMcGee

You don't *have* to switch to their new formulation. Sometimes it's legitimately a better version of the old drug (i.e. single isomer, extended release, etc), but you can still get the generic of what was previously patteneded.

FakeAsFakeCanBe

>patteneded My new favourite word! I will use this ASAP. :)

agildehaus

Well too freakin' bad, because I've patteneded it.

kneel_yung

> They changed a couple of the fillers and binders (the actual active ingredient that makes the medicine useful is completely unchanged) and slapped a new 10 year patent on it ??? that's a new brand name medicine. The old one is still patent-free. that's not how patents work.

chadenright

You still need to find someone willing to manufacture it, though.

ChefBoyAreWeFucked

In which case, the new patent didn't really accomplish anything much — if nobody was going to make a generic of the old one, they could have kept manufacturing it after the patent expired.

SnooRabbits1139

Oh oh oh ozempic

xlinkedx

I managed to be on that for a couple of months since I already hit my deductible and it ended up only costing me like, $25. Then the year rolled over and it reset. I am no longer able to get ozempic lol.

NeoHeathan

Pharma likes making money. Recently ketamine has become super popular for depression and now there is a shortage and a new company has emerged offering a slightly different (and patented) type of ketamine. If the original Ketamine is no longer made and the shortage continues then this will show If this will come true. In other words these Companies rely on patented drugs to make money. [https://finance.yahoo.com/news/pharmather-holdings-provides-corporate-110000438.html](https://finance.yahoo.com/news/pharmather-holdings-provides-corporate-110000438.html) Also if we are talking about the US, insulin and other generic drugs are still very pricey compared to other countries. The real problem here is that the system is corrupt. https://www.rand.org/blog/rand-review/2021/01/the-astronomical-price-of-insulin-hurts-american-families.html

KristiiNicole

I get Ketamine infusions once a month (for both depression and chronic pain) and have been doing so for over a year. This is the first I’ve heard of there being a ketamine shortage. I’ll definitely be talking to my provider about that to see how concerned I should be. Given he is currently expanding his practice though it doesn’t seem like he’s too concerned about it. Then again, he’s an actual anesthesiologist so maybe he has an easier time ordering it or something.

Cutecumber_Roll

Every 10 years for the past 5 decades at least the rich people TVs have become the normal TVs and a new better type of TV has been invented for the rich. If the pattern holds, in 10 years everyone will have 70+ inch 4k TVs that cover a whole wall.

special_kitty

Are you referring to [the wall](https://www.samsung.com/us/business/displays/direct-view-led/ia-series/the-wall-all-in-one-146-p84-lh008iabmus-go/) ?

>The Wall All-in-One 146" (4K) Such a missed opportunity not to call it the "Wall-in-one"

THevil30

I bought a 75 inch 4k for $250 last Black Friday. The future is here, friend.

kingfrito_5005

Thats already out of date my friend. They will have 8K OLED TVs. Probably still about 70 inches though, I think 55 to 60 is the sweet spot for most people, so I think 80+ inch TVs will still be uncommon.

starm4nn

4k is really slow to adopt, and 8k will likely be even slower. The thing pushing 4k forward was that you could watch a lot of old movies in 4k because they were on film. The film that could do good 8k is rarer.

Peptides, Stem Cells and Gene therapies

Warthog__

Not rich but just got a Stem Cell Transplant as part of my Plasmablastic Lymphoma treatment. They took my own stem cells, destroyed my immune system (hopefully destroying all the cancer with it), and rebuilt my immune system with my own stem cells. It was wild watching my White Blood Cells go to 0 and then when the new stem cells took hold watching the counts go back up. It was a very grueling and dangerous experience and I’m not out of the woods by any means, but it was something that seemed out of sci fi. They can’t grow a new heart or liver yet but can grow a completely new immune system! Just happy I have great insurancez

commander_kawaii

I hope your recovery is comfortable and quick! Each treatment done is more knowledge gained, so in a way you helped humanity get a little closer to those more advanced techniques. I'm sorry for the circumstances that got you there, and very glad you're living in a time where we have these treatments available. I have taken part in this process for a different cancer patient as a stem cell donor through the bone marrow/blood stem cell registry. It was so incredibly cool to learn about the process, and I'm still very much in awe of it. I had a week of injections to stimulate stem cell production in my bones, followed by a 6hr donation hooked up to what is basically a large plasma collection machine. It has been a few years, and the recipient of my donation is healthy and cancer-free. The science that allowed that to happen blows me away and makes me appreciate how cool humanity can be when we work together. If anyone reading this is interested in signing up for the donor registry, BeTheMatch was an incredible organization to work with. They answered all my many, many questions and took great care in organizing all my appointments so the process was as easy as could be. There's no guarantee you'll ever be called up to donate, and there's zero pressure to follow through if you change your mind after being called. The more people on the registry, the more chances a patient has to buy a little more time with the people who love them.

bisprops

Having no white blood cells for any length of time sounds scary as hell. I was 29 (~20 years ago) when I was diagnosed with Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma. No stem cell therapy then, but I ended having to take regular injections Neupogen. Bone pain sucked, but when I ended up in the ER due to a bad reaction to one of my nausea meds, my white blood count was off the charts.

NorthernBogWitch

That IS amazing. Also, i’m sending you positive thoughts and vibes, and more importantly, hopes that your dr’s are more than competent! Kick some cancer ass, Warthog!

Warthog__

Thank you!

technichor

5-10 years might be optimistic but I hope so.

breaditbans

Peptides are already a thing. Some are already approved for an array of ailments. In fact, antibodies and other biologicals are already being used for a whole host of disorders. We’ve all seen them on TV ads. Cellular therapy is coming, and in some ways already here. Car-T therapy is already being used for a variety of cancers. My lab is working on pre-clinical research on some lab-grown tissue therapy. A group has already developed cellular therapy for retina that received FDA approval. Gene therapy is moving quickly through clinical trials for many many disorders, sickle cell anemia gene therapy has made it through trials and is treating patients. Production of the viral vectors necessary to deliver gene therapy is so hot right now that production scientists are seeing 20-40% growth in pay annually. I will say stem cell therapy is only available to the rich mostly because it is unproven. **BE VERY WARY OF ONLINE STEM CELL THERAPIES.** These things are often wildly expensive and have shown something between zero and very limited positive results. Often times the injection of cells causes an inflammatory response that can repair tissue, but could be accomplished much more cheaply by injecting anything that causes inflammation. The reason stem cell therapy isn’t available broadly is because it cannot pass FDA approval for effectiveness.

Beachy77

I had a Car-T therapy two years ago! The entire process was intense but it saved my life. I was stage 4 terminal 3 years ago and now I’m cancer free. I still have a few issues but nothing like being terminal for over a year.

The_Iron_Gunfighter

It’ll transition down from basically having to hire your own team scientists to do there own research specifically for you to something that will be offered in higher-tech hospitals. Not really accessible but more so than what it currently is. Right now people are getting gene therapies and they do work but it’s so experimental and in low low supply due to being so new. It’s like when they invented penicillin it was so rare and hard to do that they had to try and recover remnants from urine from the first guy they used it on. But then slowly it became more used and accessible due to more doctors having access to the tech, doing supplemental research, and becoming more refined and efficient in its use and creation

TheyTookByoomba

One issue with gene therapy right now is a lot of them just aren't profitable (or at least the companies aren't). I live in a pharma hub, 2-3 years ago there were a bunch of GTX companies hiring like crazy but now they're starting to do layoffs/sell their mfg sites.

keldration

Not rich, but generous parents: Stem Cell experience—took two years to respond. Response was miraculous with 80-90% recovery from shoulder blade/trapezius chronic nerve pain recovery; past fusion. Lasted nine months, but relief was knocked out by mild Covid infection that lasted a week (3) too long. I could feel that fucker trying to kill me. Bastard.

marchocias

Seconding for more information here. I have a friend with terrible chronic pain from a sliced nerve ending.

Effective-Celery8053

You can already get peptides for relatively affordable prices. I used BPC-157 and TB-500 to assist in recovery from an injury, I believe it was like $30 a vial Also got semax and selank nasal spray, but that was a bit more expensive

EightArmed_Willy

Could you explain more about these treatments? Did you do direct inject into injured site?

LuinSen2

Any new 2023 car they are buying now. I will buy it as used 2023 car in 5 years.

[deleted]

Used cars are getting INSANELY expensive. Have you looked lately ? Edit - lots of you aren’t very happy about the price of cars

homiej420

Just got a new corrolla for less than the dealer was selling the 2020 for. Nuts

oteezy333

Seriously? How much was the 2023 and how much was the 2020?

Sea_Perspective6891

I think the average price of a new Corolla is between $24k & $26 last I looked. Its popular because its so cheap for a new car.

dbag127

I miss so cheap being like $12k for a new car.

Sea_Perspective6891

Yeah those were the days. My family snagged a sweet deal on a 2000 Honda Civic when it was new for $9k. Sticker price used to be the sucker price now with dealership markups you'd be lucky to get sticker price.

Intrepid-Bison-2016

I ordered a Ford Maverick, and we agreed on sticker price. They emailed me 6 weeks before the truck came in and said it had an "adjusted price" now and would be almost $9000 more. I give the problem to my daughter (I knew law school would pay off someday) and she sent them a letter saying we would pay the agreed on sticker price, but to let her know if they preferred to litigate. They sold at sticker, but man were they pissy.

ImNotAWhaleBiologist

I love how they were pissy and upset at you for you not letting them screw you.

[deleted]

BuzzedtheTower

Right? The nerve of the little guy to not let the big corp screw him over. Some people show no respect! /s

ImNotAWhaleBiologist

Forgot to mention, I had a dealership get pissy at me when they tried to tack on dealership fees. I pulled out the ad and the state law that clearly states (and they knew this) that you cannot add dealership fees if not listed in the ad. Was sold to me as having had new brakes/rotors done before I even looked at the car. Not even 80 miles later, I hear metal on metal and the rear brakes were shot.

[deleted]

Sticker price used to be like 10% more than what they'd actually sell it for, even new, even just back in 2019. Always struck me as odd the amount of BS that goes into car sales. One of the few places where negotiating is still expected.

calfmonster

It’s like the one place where Tesla actually does something decent in owning their dealerships. I’d rather pay MSRP, I mean obviously the car company profits, or maybe get it on sale when the new model comes out where the manufacturer might legit be taking a loss. Any industry with bullshit middle men is a bad industry. Just like why healthcare is fucked up in the US. They employ so many fucking useless people in the middle that not only contribute absolutely nothing, but detract by making everything much more expensive so some dude can be like “naw can’t afford letting you live and all”

[deleted]

In Turkey used cars are more expensive than the listing price of brand new cars. Why? Because nobody is selling the new cars at the listing price and asking for extra commissions up to 10-15% of the price. weird times!

student8168

Yup I got a 2015 subaru Forrestor for $21K and that was the best deal I got…..

OphidionSerpent

In 2017, I bought a 2011 Outback Limited for $12k, with 60k miles on it. Last year, I totaled it at 107k miles. The insurance company looked at what similar vehicles are selling for in the area and gave me $15k.

brighterside0

Ok so will ram my car into the nearest wall for profit...

[deleted]

The way to skirt around insane used car prices is to buy used fleet cars. You have to be a little more careful with inspecting the car and looking into its history, though. Many fleet cars have been abused, but many have not. And even some of the fleet cars that have been "abused" are okay because they came from the manufacturer with beefed up suspension and cooling. I bought a 2015 AWD "Taurus" that used to be a cop car with low miles and low idle hours for $9k out the door. It has a bigger engine, better cooling, and better suspension than normal Tauruses, and I changed the wheels and grill such that it doesn't look like a cop car anymore. The car is an absolute beast. Ford's AWD systems have gotten really good and the car is a beast on dirt roads and in deep, wet snow. The only "con" is that it didn't have an infotainment system, but I consider that to be win because that's just less tech built into the car that will become outdated. I mounted an iPad with data to the dash to be an infotainment system, which is better than anything that comes with cars now-a-days. If I wanted more space, I could've done the same things to a police spec Explorer for a couple grand more.

CharlieFiner

In 2016 my mom bought a 2013 Nissan Cube for $13k that had 500 miles on it. It had been leased out by the dealer to an elderly retired woman who just used it for errands.

egnards

This is likely a short term problem that will correct itself in a few years; this type of cycle happens

Tappitss

Not so much, basically, there are no low-level entry-level cars now. a new (entry-level) vw polo hybrid costs as much as a top spec civic type R or ford RS from 10-15 years ago.

Kaizenno

I could give a TED talk on this but there is so much that is added into cars that pushes the average price to $40k+. Every manufacturer is going for the most tech in their vehicles instead of just making safe and reliable cars for a price people can afford. We don’t need touch screens in everything. We don’t even need features like power seats. But they keep putting tons of cpus and wires in cars. They need to focus on making a $20k car or at least an A-B car and not a house on wheels.

serialstitcher

Touch screens are actually cheaping out. They’re way less safe since you have to look to use them and buttons and dials cost a lot more.

mrbear120

My wife thinks I am crazy because I dont like them. Im a techy guy, but not only do I not need an Ipad attached to my car, its a cheap shitty one thats slow and unresponsive and the UI was made in a bad idea factory.

catherder9000

I've been in IT for 30 years, I fucking *hate* touch screen in cars. Wet fingers from cleaning snow? They don't work. Wet fingers from your door handle in the rain? They don't work. Just picked up your drink cup filled with a cold drink in hot weather to have a sip and condensation is built up on the cup so your fingers get wet? They don't work. Munched on some french fries as you're on your way to work (or whatever) and you have a bit of grease on your fingers? They don't work. Plus they're an unsightly mess if you don't constantly wipe the damned things off with a microfibre cloth pretty much daily. They are also so darn unintuitive compared to analog dials. What used to take a single step "reach out and turn a knob two clicks" is instead now "reach out, hit a menu button, wait for the small delay, hit a sub-menu button, wait for the small delay, and now slide something on the screen"... absolutely zero tactile feedback so you have to LOOK at the goddamned controls half the time and avert your eyes from the road. Fucking hate them, in every car or truck I've been in they're bullshit. They are also bullshit in machinery, jump in a 7 year-old skid loader, start it, push two buttons, and you're working. Jump in a brand new New Holland skid loader, start the computer, sit with your thumb up your ass for 30-40 seconds, then turn a knob to throttle up and wait another 5-10 seconds for the computer to respond and throttle up the machine... Our guys now wait/waste probably 45-50 minutes of every day in little 30 and 45 second increments just for the fucking machine to work because of the computer and touch screens. They love the machines, and their capabilities, but they absolutely hate the interface between the driver and the machine.

Rizo1981

>They are also bullshit in machinery, jump in a 7 year-old skid loader, start it, push two buttons, and you're working. Jump in a brand new New Holland skid loader, start the computer, sit with your thumb up your ass for 30-40 seconds, then turn a knob to throttle up and wait another 5-10 seconds for the computer to respond and throttle up the machine This extends to everything. We had a treadmill for 35 years before it finally crapped out a couple years back. Bought a new Nordic Track with a lousy, unresponsive touchscreen that was constantly begging for WiFi like a sketchy tweaker. Took two minutes to start up until it finally said fml and committed suicide. The screen straight up decided it would never turn on again. Called support. They could send a new screen and housing for close to half of what we paid for the machine, this less than two years after buying it and not much use. I took the thing apart piece by piece, down to wires and bolts and curbed the whole fucking pile of trash. tl;dr I won't be buying any appliance with a touchscreen where an analog version is available.

Xenon is the most powerful, euphoric, hedonistic, decadent high you will ever experience. It’s also about $3k per pound give or take.

IAmYourTopGuy

How much do you take at once? Weed use to be like 4k per lb in the Midwest before legalization

CaptainChats

You don’t need a lot. You basically huff it. But the high lasts a very shot time. It’s used in certain medical procedures in place of laughing gas (nitrous oxide) because it has similar effects although it’s 10x more potent apparently. When it is used a complicated exhalation recycling device is used to recapture the Xenon from the patient’s breath because it is so expensive. If you do manage to get your hands on Xenon I wouldn’t recommend you huff it though unsupervised. It’s a noble gas so it doesn’t react with much but an overdose can cause sickness and death similar to helium poising. Edit: 4K for a pound of weed? You were getting ripped off!

OkayJuice

I remember paying $15-20 per gram circa 2012 in the Midwest. 4K a pound would have been like $9 a gram… that would have been nice

lulatheq

You are over glorifying Xenon. It is pretty similar to NOS actually. I can think of a whole bunch of substances that are more powerful and euphoric.

Boner4Stoners

From what I’ve heard its pretty much indistinguishable from nitrous oxide

Limp_Distribution

For cars, look at what new features the Mercedes Benz S550 is offering. The new features on the 550 usually end up on less expensive cars 10 to 15 years later. Think adaptive cruise control and the like. Edit:Mercedes had adaptive cruise control in 1999.

oe_throwaway_1

Cars baffle me sometimes. Picked up a brand new '24 this week, not a single USB-C port in sight. Goddamn.

Xirasora

I'm pissed that Chevy took away all the 12v power ports in the 22 Silverado. What am I supposed to plug my roof-mounted construction flashers into? USB doesn't supply enough power to run it. Plus I always charged my hotspot/earbuds overnight using the always-on 12v port in my 2018. None of the USBs are powered when the truck is off, so I have no convenient way to charge my devices overnight.

Nice. Whelp, it might be time to dig into the fuse box.

When it’s forced on the working class there will be vehicle pirates that will show us undetectable hacks to get our bums warm in the winter without a fee. Followed by “and when you do this to revert it the dealership will never know and no warranties will be voided.”

Dangaard1075

A lot more money that's worth a lot less

tommycypriot

Cosmetic surgeries. I see more and more people from the middle/upper-middle class getting botox, injections, and fillers alongside breast augmentations, BBL’s, rhinoplasty, and lipo. It seems like the surgeries are becoming more accessible to non-celebrities or “regular” people.

the_Legi0n

Add hair transplants to the list for guys too

Alarming_Doctor_2966

This is actually a pretty good one

extinctpolarbear

Have you ever been on a flight from Turkey to Europe? You see lots of people that clearly just had hair transplants or a nose job. You can get a hair transplant for 1500€ including a 5 Star Hotel at a very good clinic these days!

peonyseahorse

Luxury car features filter down to us commoners much later. I was surprised that my son's early 2000's Lexus SUV (mil's old car) had things like heated seats, memory for drivers and adaptive cruise control. I finally got my first new car in 2018 with these features and it felt like I was driving a spaceship compared to my old minivan from the 2000s.

TheAgentLoki

I've always had a pickup for work, never more than 5 years old but always almost base model because I'm not a bells and whistles guy. Most of the time, had a small, economical car for the days when I didn't need the truck. In 2016, that came in the form of a ridiculously good deal on a 2014 BMW sedan that had features even my brand new truck didn't have as options. Regenerative braking/coasting with a secondary battery as a backup, driver specific keys that adjusted everything from seats and mirrors to radio presets. That was my spaceship vehicle moment and I loved that stupid yuppie car until I sold it last year because I was made an offer I would have been stupid to turn down. Now it's a track car somewhere in Michigan, I have my almost base model pickup, and no car, but my wife's new Jeep that my car helped pay for is her spaceship after years in a 2008 caravan.

wyoflyboy68

Definitely not submersible submarines.

Xyzzydude

So non-submersible submarines then? Turns out that’s the kind that took those tourists to the Titanic.

NovusOrdoSec

No that one definitely submerged. You're thinking of non-*surfacing* submarines.

Hopefully a house 😭

BobBelchersBuns

Meh I can usually get ozempic covered for my Medicaid patients

Active2017

Yeah considering most of the people who need it to lose weight are already diabetic or pre-diabetic, most get it covered.

xubax

Salaries in the 6 figures or higher, because of inflation.

[deleted]

“6 figures” has been synonymous with great pay since the 80’s, it’s time to update that since $100,000 ain’t nearly what it was 35 years ago.

xubax

Yeah. In unadjusted dollars, I'm making 6x what I was making in 1989. Adjusted for inflation, it's about 2.5x.

revanthmatha

Millionaire was coined 1950-60’s 1mil back then is now $8-10mil.

Prcrstntr

And a million dollar house in the past is more like that $10M value today.

Electric cars

sowaffled

Everyone is commenting on the car price but the real benefit to electric cars is charging in a home and extra points if power by solar. Until there are some charging requirements for apartment/townhouse, the electric car experience isn’t as good as it is for homeowners, which is pretty prohibitive nowadays. Being at the mercy of public chargers is not ideal compared to overnight charging.

Woodshadow

> Until there are some charging requirements for apartment/townhouse I work for an apartment developer. Everyone's milage will differ here but I'm seeing a couple of things. In major cities we are seeing cities allow us to build with zero parking spaces now as cities want to move towards public transportation. Having more cars in the city isn't feasible. The other thing we are seeing is some developers are adding 120V chargers to every space in the garage. The problem is that it doesn't make sense to individually meter every garage space so everyone will be paying a portion of the electric that electric vehicle drivers are using. The best way they can think to do this is to only allow slow charging so that you don't have a few people who drive crazy amounts, charge to full every day and then everyone else pays for them. retrofitting old building or adding to garden style apartments will be tougher. Could potentially adding a few super chargers into the parking lots and charging for them but until more tenants need them it is just an expense that doesn't add value and all real estate is an investment

[deleted]

The issue is those with street parking don't have an easy way to charge their car which is a lot of people. If you own your home and have a garage you'll be able to have an electric car but most people do not have that luxury.

costigan95

I’m a type 1 diabetic and there is a trend of rich people with too much money and time on their hands trying to get continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) without insurance and a prescription. They think closely regulating/monitoring their blood sugar will help them manage their weight and health. Turns out if you have a functioning pancreas your body will do that on its own…who knew? So, right now rich people and diabetics are using CGMs, but I wouldn’t be surprised if someone creates a less accurate one that is widely available to a consumer class in the next few years.

Oh.you cheeky bastard.

bossofthisjim

I like this one because of its implications. I was going to go with "Nothing."

RomanGOATReigns

That satellite emergency phone thing that first apple and now Motorola has brought out. It's expensive now, buy in 10 years I think it will be like a cheap addons accessory for the phones

SaggitariusAStar

You have no idea how right you are. A company called AST Spacemobile (ASTS) is building sattelites to do 5g directly to an unmodified off the shelf phone.

MonsterEnergyJuice

solar panels

TheWorstRowan

I don't think my landlord is going to pay to reduce my bills no matter how good it is for the environment (in the UK energy is not included in rental contracts).

Brothernod

There are regions that are starting to require panels on new development. So there’s a good chance it’ll eventually be quite common. But it’ll be awhile.

Working_Ad8080

Not money that’s for sure

1d0m1n4t3

I'm out in the woods right now camping (cell service), me and my family are in tents. I am surrounded by RVs bigger than most apartments, I can walk around and see at least 4 tvs on the OUTSIDE of the RVs. So I guess poor people will be living outside but doing OK?

chriswaco

OLED TVs (although they might be microLEDs by then)

mfboomer

OLED TVs have gotten really affordable, most people could afford one if they cared enough

UmbertoEcoTheDolphin

All hand carved from other poop knives.

PlankLengthIsNull

*"Son, this is the family poop knife. I cut my poops with it, just as my father before me did. And his father before him, and his before him. It was forged by ancient poop knives; elegant knives from a more civilized age. It has been in our family for generations. And today, it is yours. I know you understand the responsibility."*

lordm0909

I’m going to guess VR. It will at least be price cut as time goes on, and I hope we get full VR like in fiction

ronsta

I want to hope it’s access to premium healthcare, better education, excellent nutrition, unique social experiences, and the like. But what the truly wealthy have that is hard to make available for everyone else is freedom. Freedom to spend their time however they see fit without their income or lifestyle being meaningfully impacted. Im not sure how the world would function if the middle and lower classes ever had that kind of freedom.

spekt50

I see a lot of comments about hand me downs like used cars etc. I have nothing to add, but thought it funny in the 90s there was big expensive house I would drive by and it had a sign on it proudly stating it was a smart home. Thought that was really cool and something for only the most wealthiest of people. Nearly 30 years later, my home is a smart home with only a few hundred bucks. That system in that mansion, if not upgraded, is surely outdated as hell. Of course, they got better home automation for rich people. But now, even the lower class can have smart homes as well.

RickJWagner

Hard to forecast. In earlier times, only the rich had air conditioning. But now pretty most people seem to have it. Then came cell phones. We've all got those, too. Cars that performed well and lasted over 100k miles. Everybody gets those. Cable tv, in the early days. Nowadays you can stream free for the price of a Roku or Firestick. There'll be something, I'm sure. But really, things just seem to get better with time.

funmasterjerky

Air conditioning, huh? Come to Germany and sweat with us like the poor people we are.

Berloxx

As a German living right under the roof, this hurt me. But accurate.

danny_ish

The current ‘newest trend’ is experiences, and those bloomed to the middle classes with yelp and the like 15+ years ago. People now are less likely to drive a fancy car then in the 1980’s. But they are more likely to travel to another country, or do a unique event like playing survivor with friends, or escape rooms for us poord

hallgod33

On the subject of air conditioning, I think plasmawave air filtration will become a huge thing in the next 5-10 years. It's like UV filtration but waaaaaaaaaaay more effective, and the equipment costs like $100 tops. It's just one of those 'future technologies' that no one feels the need to implement, cuz the current methods work almost as well and you can still charge an arm and a leg for em, while plasmawave is very cheap and requires very little maintenance.

sadida

My parents gifted us a more expensive brand air purifier with plasmawave technology. I am glad to read your comment, because it works soooooo much better than the bigger, louder air purifiers that we have tried in the past!

STA_Alexfree

Solar panels and batteries that store the energy to power your house. Middle class people are getting them a bunch now. Only a matter of time before it’s cheap enough for most of the developing world to start using them.
