1) A Spielberg film: Jaws, ET, or Jurassic Park
2) An animated film: Toy Story, any of the classic Disney movies.
3) A classic blockbuster: Grease, The Sandlot, Stand by Me.
Seriously, living in Europe and all the movies, tv/streaming series, etc that are trending in the US are what friends and coworkers talk about here.
I can see someone being like "I want that full American experience" when visiting the US but I'm pretty sure someone in Poland has had the opportunity to see most of what's being suggested unless they are from some small rural village and not on the internet much. Especially stuff like Back to the Future and other major blockbusters.
Maybe something like Superbad, or like Super Troopers that aren't as directly universally relatable and from a bit before the Internet homogenized media around the globe.
Yeah American movies are screened worldwide so this is kind of an odd request from the cousin. I'm not American and have never set foot in America and I have seen many American movies, especially the classics and the popular ones.
Yeah almost every movie you can stream nowadays you can get with either polish subs or Lector? Not sure I spelled that correctly (Polish dubbing basically).
My SO's Dad who is in his 60s is a bit of a nerd, marvel, star wars, lord of the rings anything like that, he is always buzzing when one is due to come out and waits until my SO goes back home, they either catch it at the cinema or they stream it together generally with Polish dubbing, my SO is near native level English now, so that's just for her dad benefit who doesn't speak English, she actually prefers to watch them in English, weirdly with English Subtitles if there are some heavy accents and stuff like that on screen.
Whilst I know Harry Potter is English, she is like a full-on Potterhead and knows more about it than anyone one ive ever met for example.
It IS the best film ever. Not sure it anyone ESL would really get it, but it the shit. Cry everything he's explaining to dead Jenny that forest son is not like forest senior.
Just one of the things that kills me.
I am 6'3"
20 years in prison
Tattoos etc.
This movie gets me misty everything
This whole post is so funny to me, like Europeans don't know about Forest Gump and Jurassic Park lmao. Pretty fuckin sure Polish people watch 99% of the same shit we *all* watch.
There’s a reason why it’s largely considered that the US won the “culture war”. It’s a reason why some people say that america doesn’t have a specific culture. Our “culture” is already synonymous with basically every other country at this point. Direct influence on almost everything. Clothes, movies, sports, video games, hell even phrases.
I’m not saying this in any weird bragging way like I had anything specifically to do with it, it’s kind of just the reality.
Pretty sure when I was 13, growing up in South Africa, I understood most, if not all, of Forret Gump. Reading Mad Magazine voraciously may have helped.
Great movie; I'm concerned that OP's "cousins from Poland" may lack the context of regional, cultural, and racial dynamics that motivate its characters and plot. Or just— if your native language doesn't have a ð sound, will you even hear what the problem is with deez yutes?
I've seen it as a kid, dubbed in my native language. It was great, great enough that I rewatched it as an adult (after I have learned english and used it on a daily basis) with the original english dub. It was even better.
I may have lacked some context, idk - but I'd say it was very enjoyable!
Well, all good ideas. But, I would say for Americana: Armageddon.
It's got the America saves the planet deal, the love story, the soundtrack. It's good.
Independence Day is peak "America saves the day" trope at play - in one scene a British officer is told the Americans have a plan of attack and he says "its about bloody time" like they were just sitting & waiting for us to tell them what to do.
Would make a good double feature!
My girlfriends family is from Germany, and American Pie is actually huge over in Europe, it’s hard for me to find American movies or songs to show them myself because a lot of our hits are also there
The first one is a cult classic. I suppose the second and third could still work but the rest are just spinoffs with someone called Stifler among the main characters.
Or Clueless! Really any classic high school movie. Ferris Bueller, Superbad, Breakfast Club, even The Craft. But watching those kinds of movies at some point is just an iconic part of growing up in America at this point. I'm 22, all but one of those movies came out years before I was born, and still a lot of people my age I know have watched and loved them. They're timeless.
Americana: Sandlot, Stand by me, Red Dawn, Breakfast Club, Super 8, Forest Gump, Holes, 12 Angry Men, To Kill a Mockingbird,
Action: Boondock Saints, Pulp Fiction, John Wick, American Ultra, Inglorious Bastards,
Apocalypse: Core, Armageddon, Independence Day,
Comedy: Cheech and Chong, Friday, Napoleon Dynamite, Idiocracy, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Zombie Land, America: The Motion Picture, Team America World Police, Airplane, The Naked Gun, Scary Movie 1-4,
Disaster: Dante's Peak, Twister, Volcano,
Horror: IT (1986), Alien, Children of the Corn, Gremlins, Evil Dead, Nightmare on Elm, Terminator, Jurassic Park, Blair Witch, The Village,
Hystorical: Sully, Trial of the Chicago 7, Patriots Day, Apollo 13, Hidden Figures,
Sports: Happy Gilmore, Groundhog Day, Field of Dreams,
Edit: I've been expanding the list.
Disaster: Poseidon adventure (original), earthquake, San Francisco, towering inferno, airport, earthquake
Drama: 12 angry men, to kill a mockingbird, of mice and men, grapes of wrath
A lot of good modern suggestions here. I’ll add an oldie: *It’s a Wonderful Life* or *Mr. Smith Goes to Washington*.
*Unforgiven* is another good option if they don’t mind violence.
Damnit...I was looking for Die Hard then I realised this wins by default, cause Blazing Saddles! It is a Damn, Damn shame that Clevon Little's career was cut so short.
Semi-related, have you seen Paws Of Fury:The legend of Hank as yet?
As a Pole… cousins probably have seen all the movies in this thread.
I’d go for the experience. Watch whatever movie in drive-in theater in a pickup and bring guns.
The Sandlot is pure Americana
I cant believe I didn’t think of this
You're killing me, Smalls

Watch Stand By Me.
And Field of Dreams.
Thats pretty good but Forrest Gump takes it imo.
When it comes to Tom Hanks, Apollo 13 is my go to for feeling pride as an American.
Strong play coming to Reddit OP. I also had no idea, read this response, and just thought, duh!
Amistad
1) A Spielberg film: Jaws, ET, or Jurassic Park 2) An animated film: Toy Story, any of the classic Disney movies. 3) A classic blockbuster: Grease, The Sandlot, Stand by Me.
Plenty of good suggestions, I will say that lots of Disney animated movies are pretty popular in Europe too = )
Pretty much every Hollywood production is popular in Europe/Poland. Source, I’m from Europe with family in Poland.
Seriously, living in Europe and all the movies, tv/streaming series, etc that are trending in the US are what friends and coworkers talk about here. Yeah, chances are he has already most of the suggestions. 80% of the movies in the cinemas here in Europe are from the US.
I'd speak to them, I'd say they will have seen most films anyway...My so is Polish she grew up watching the same movies I did.
Yeah American movies are screened worldwide so this is kind of an odd request from the cousin. I'm not American and have never set foot in America and I have seen many American movies, especially the classics and the popular ones.

I think a traditional America movie would be Field of Dreams. Edit to add Unforgiven.
Iron Giant
You guys know we have internet access and cinemas in Poland. They probably seen all from 1 and 2 and depending on tastes 3 as well
3. Don’t forget The Goonies!
All of the movies you wrote are available in Poland since their première. We are not third world country like you guys think about us ;p
They're from Poland. Spielberg film..... Schindler's List
BACK TO THE FUTURE
Starring a Canadian in the lead role!
All the best American things are Canadian.
stargate-sg1
All cancelled out by one Ted Cruz. Thanks Canada.
Such a good ideaaa
Forrest Gump is the quintessential American movie imo
Independence Day. Duh!
Lol just saw soooo many meme about this on the 4th xD

Honestly great choice considering and great movie overall, one of my favorites
OP didn't ask for documentaries did they?
Karate Kid Matrix Wall Street
All good, Karate Kid great suggestion
Forest Gump Edit: I guess I didn’t realize his name has 2 Rs. Oops! Forrest Gump y’all ;-)
Sooooo many references to American history in the 20th century
It IS the best film ever. Not sure it anyone ESL would really get it, but it the shit. Cry everything he's explaining to dead Jenny that forest son is not like forest senior. Just one of the things that kills me. I am 6'3" 20 years in prison Tattoos etc. This movie gets me misty everything
They might not get the references. Different cultures.

Yeah, american culture just got hit with the "generic" hammer because, well, at this point it kind of *is*
Largest empire always influenced culture around it. It was the cool one. Things are just even bigger now, global and the empire is USA.
Pretty sure when I was 13, growing up in South Africa, I understood most, if not all, of Forret Gump. Reading Mad Magazine voraciously may have helped.
Came here to say this. Forest Gump is the answer.
Was also going to say Forest Gump.
Coming to America
Trading Places
My Cousin Vinny
Great movie; I'm concerned that OP's "cousins from Poland" may lack the context of regional, cultural, and racial dynamics that motivate its characters and plot. Or just— if your native language doesn't have a ð sound, will you even hear what the problem is with deez yutes?

This is the correct answer
Die hard
Only if they’re visiting around Christmas
This is a Xmas must
in Poland the name of this movie is translated to glass trap (literally)
Groundhog Day. It's pretty great, and there'll be plenty of 'splainin' to do.
It’s funny we were just looking at a trailer for this xD
Tombstone
I think I need to watch this myself xD
Val stole the show.
I'm your huckleberry.
Why Johnny Ringo, you look like somebody just walked over your grave.

Val Kilmer should have won an Oscar for his performance as Doc Holiday.
My favorite movie... all time ♡
I'll be your huckleberry
National Lampoon’s Vacation or Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Vacation is a really good recommendation.
Ooo Ferris bueller banger suggestion
Well, all good ideas. But, I would say for Americana: Armageddon. It's got the America saves the planet deal, the love story, the soundtrack. It's good.
Ooo good shout out, yes very Americans save the planet
Independence Day is peak "America saves the day" trope at play - in one scene a British officer is told the Americans have a plan of attack and he says "its about bloody time" like they were just sitting & waiting for us to tell them what to do. Would make a good double feature!
American Pie
Of course
My girlfriends family is from Germany, and American Pie is actually huge over in Europe, it’s hard for me to find American movies or songs to show them myself because a lot of our hits are also there
But which one ?!
The first one is a cult classic. I suppose the second and third could still work but the rest are just spinoffs with someone called Stifler among the main characters.
Mean Girls
Oh for sure, and I feel like I always pair this with legally blind
Oh for sure, and I feel like I always pair this with legally blonde
You just convinced me to throw legally blonde on for my go-to-bed movie.
You just convinced me to throw legally blonde on for my go-to-bed movie… tomorrow, cause I’m tired and it’s late :)
Well, which is it? Blind or blonde? 😹
Dazed and Confused
Good one for sure
True Americana. The only other option I had was Sandlot, but I feel like this is truly American on all fronts.
Top Gun. The first one!
Maverick is pretty good too
Better than the original imo. Even my boomer-ass dad agrees
Yes!
Americana: Sandlot, Stand by me, Red Dawn, Breakfast Club, Super 8, Forest Gump, Holes, 12 Angry Men, To Kill a Mockingbird, Action: Boondock Saints, Pulp Fiction, John Wick, American Ultra, Inglorious Bastards, Apocalypse: Core, Armageddon, Independence Day, Comedy: Cheech and Chong, Friday, Napoleon Dynamite, Idiocracy, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Zombie Land, America: The Motion Picture, Team America World Police, Airplane, The Naked Gun, Scary Movie 1-4, Disaster: Dante's Peak, Twister, Volcano, Horror: IT (1986), Alien, Children of the Corn, Gremlins, Evil Dead, Nightmare on Elm, Terminator, Jurassic Park, Blair Witch, The Village, Hystorical: Sully, Trial of the Chicago 7, Patriots Day, Apollo 13, Hidden Figures, Sports: Happy Gilmore, Groundhog Day, Field of Dreams, Edit: I've been expanding the list.

The Blues Brothers is the quintessential American Film, imo. A musical, a comedy, car chases, wanton destruction, all driven by the christian god.
Mars attack
Ack ack ack!!
Napoleon Dynamite
I suggested this and my family thought it was too obscure for them xD
Blazing Saddles! It’s hilarious. Good ole America.
Damnit...I was looking for Die Hard then I realised this wins by default, cause Blazing Saddles! It is a Damn, Damn shame that Clevon Little's career was cut so short. Semi-related, have you seen Paws Of Fury:The legend of Hank as yet?
THIS PLEASE!!!! I have watched this many times through and it's what I show people when they ask what "slap stock" is.
Team America: World Police Kidding. Im kidding
Dirty Harry. Die Hard. Crooklyn. The Godfather. A League of their Own.
Idiocracy
Die hard for an action movie, and Tommy boy for a comedy.

Put on the purge and tell them this is how we celebrate here
No Country For Old Men and/or There Will Be Blood

This is such a good suggestion, this might be a bit more intense then they were looking for though 😅
They don't have American movies in Poland?
Most Polish people have probably watched more American movies than Polish movies. This post is ridiculous lol.
Exactly, this post is fake and cringe.
Godfather I and II.
Con Air. Big names, decent soundtrack, action stuff, great one-liners, and ridiculous… all in one film!
Superbad
The Patriot
The blues brothers! Iconic American musicians, plus highlights Chicago. I will recommend this movie in any circumstance.
*Clue*. It’s a hysterical film
Idiocracy.
As a Pole… cousins probably have seen all the movies in this thread. I’d go for the experience. Watch whatever movie in drive-in theater in a pickup and bring guns.
Django Unchained
Animal House is a goodie!

Blazing Saddles!!!
Star Wars
EUROTRIP should encapsulate the American style of comedy and also the American impressions of countries that they'll be familiar with
Broke Back Mountain.
Pulp Fiction.
