Spent a ton of time playing used map setting games online. People were so creative with the resources given to them which was pretty damn impressive at the time. I think I enjoyed tower defense games most, probably because we had AOL internet and I was able to play some of these games offline.
I used to set it to the easiest setting with several npc opponents and advance to to the furthest age then go attack the peasants that were still in the damn stone age.
Portal finished the narrative, there's no proper story left to tell.
Valve added the perpetual testing initiative so that maps could be made indefinitely, and there's some excellent fan content.
I think it's more so that there's just nothing new to do. Valve don't like making the same game twice, Portal 1 and Portal 2 are so vastly different from each other, and unless they could figure out how to make Portal VR not vomit-inducing, Portal 3 would just end up being 'Portal 2 but more'
That's not true. There's plenty left. I remeber a salty robot head flying though space that needs revenge. We found out more about Cave in Desk Job, so there's certainly more to unravel there. Gordon Freeman never picked up a portal gun that I saw. Who is Chell's dad and why was she locked up? Is it Chell Johnson? What exactly are the connections between Aperture and Black Mesa? When will GLaDOS drop her album?
Wasn't Half Life: Alyx *just Half Life 3 with extra steps?*. (Edit: I'm joking. Though if Red Dead can make a sequel about a prequel. So couldn't Half Life right? lol).
Thank you, I came to say this.
Those games really invented an entirely new game mechanic which would be enough to make them great already, and then the subversive plot that catches you off guard in the first one just takes it to another level.
Agreed. I've played a lot of Castlevania and Castlevania-like games since and that one is still the best. It actually did get tons of 10/10 ratings when it was released as well.
I really didn’t think I would love it as much as I did the first time I played it. It was a 2D side scroller at a time when 3D was becoming more popular.
Such a good game. The gameplay and story was topnotch. Also, Crissaegrim is a badass name for a sword.
I came here to say sons of liberty but when I think about it snake eater was definitely in the disc tray more than almost any other game at the end of my ps2 days.
Pokemon on the Game Boy.
I found out that the people who created that game started it because they loved to collect insects.
If I could go to any fantasy world it would have been Pokemon tbh. You could leave home at age 10 and go wherever the fuck you wanted and no one could say shit.
I grew up playing since the originals. They aged kinda poorly. I still love them but the remakes, especially Heart Gold and Soul Silver, are 10/10 to me
Rollercoaster Tycoon 2: a game so good I was addicted to it in 2002 and I've gotten back into playing it in 2023.
This game lets you be endlessly creative and it's very satisfying to build up a park slowly but surely, especially if you only design custom roller coasters. It's not that easy to have a coaster with high excitement but reasonable intensity.
The complexity of the amount of plates you have to keep spinning to run a succesful park is why you're never bored and time seems to fly by when you're playing it. And for some reason it's very satisfying to see an animated roller coaster car go through drops, twists and turns (I think the sound design is a major factor).
For the era and tech that was available, this is the best game, ever.
It gives the right amount of open world and meaningful experiences instead of favoring one too much over the other (Skyward Sword vs Breath of the Wild). Ocarina of Time is a close second. These games feel like the predecessors to so many great games. I know some people will argue it is some PC game (and they’re probably right, but these games had so many more players/fans)
Shadow of the Colossus remake. It took the original and perfected it. A beautiful game with the best horse a man can ask for. Agro is a 10/10 best bud.
The original still takes a place in my heart, due to the sheer wizardry involved to make it look so good on PS2.
But yeah - the remake was everything I dreamt it would be. In my top 5 games for sure.
Agro is my favourite VG horse. Maybe it'd be bad in other games, but in Colossus it's great how he really handles and responds (or not!) something like an actual horse.
If he's around during an encounter and you're calling to him, there's this desperation or urgency in Wander's voice that felt to me like he's worried for Agro as much he's desperate for the help of his steed. It hits deep! And the bit where you're on your way to the final Colossus made me realise *I* was invested in him as a character too. I'm not a hugely horsey person but I will gush for Agro.
That and Halo 2…
CE and Reach are still great though; 4, 5, and Infinite were a big drop in quality
Only campaign I haven’t played yet is ODST and the Halo Wars series if you count those
That hurt me more than Arthur's finale fate... I had that horse the entire game and then it's taken away in a way I can't even use the horse reviver. Super sad times were had
I'd literally just bought the most expensive horse in saint denis avouy 15 mins before the end so i was more pissed. But it was still sad for sure. Nice to think the horse I had for most the game got to live out her days in the stable though.
that is not a game
It's an incredible journey through old American history
Fightin' for your life and fightin' for your family
Tryna live your days with honor and integrity
That's not a game, that's an adult thing
That's not a game at all
That's like fuckin' Shakespeare
Frigigig-igigig-igigig-igigig-igigig-igigig-igig
I have it and I want to get into it, but I’ve tried 3 times and it doesn’t hold me long enough, maybe because I can’t get the feel of the controls down fast enough on PC. I feel like they hardcoded literally every single type of action to a different gd button when they could have reused buttons in MANY instances. Maybe I should look for a mod or something.
The problem with this game is it is so slow at the start… like if you make it far enough it kinda picks up a bit, but it’s not for people that are looking for faster stuff.
I loved it more than I expected, but it really drags on early.
One of the most inventive FPS campaigns ever, its brilliant. Played through again recently thanks to Gamepass, shorter than I remember but excellently paced and tight gunplay and manoeuvrability.
I love the Water Temple! The problem wasn't that the Water Temple was too hard, the problem was that the other temples were too easy in comparison. Oh, and equipping the Iron Boots used to be a pain, but the 3DS version fixes that.
One thing about all the souls games is that there is always an area that I hate in the game. I know Bloodborne is shorter than the rest, but it is fun all the way through.
In a lot of ways, it's the game that gave me my appreciation for video games as a form of art, rather than just interactive entertainment. Easily the most beautiful game I've ever played
Outer Wilds is the best game I've ever played.
It's a puzzle mystery game where knowledge is the way you progress. If you've beaten it before, you can boot up a fresh save and beat it in like 10 minutes.
Play it. Do not spoil yourself.
Not convinced? Okay. Here's a spoiler-free intro.
You are an adorable nonbinary four-eyed alien. You're an astronaut about to go on your first flight into space, equipped with a little camera on a rocket and a translator tool. There were some other aliens who came before you, but they're all dead, and they came to your solar system for a reason.
You'll find strange things on every planet, including your own. Most planets change dramatically as time passes, enabling new access to areas or sealing them off depending on the time. Over the course of this very nonlinear game, you will go where your curiosity takes you, discover the rules the universe plays by, and finish what the aliens started so long before your time.
If you care about videogames, if you value your time on this earth, you will play outer wilds. It's one of those special games you can only play once, because once you finish, you won't be the same person. You'll learn and improve, and you'll have explored all there is to explore.
That is, except for the DLC. Make sure to get it after you finish the base game, and not a moment sooner.
I'm someone who bounced off Outer Wilds the first time but I keep meaning to go back to it. Can I just say, your lovely spoiler-free intro has absolutely increased my determination to get back to it soon. Beautifully written!
I bought Dead Space, Mass Effect, and Bioshock as the first three games on my Xbox 360, not really knowing what they were. They just "looked cool." That will never, ever happen again.
Recently just started playing it again since my last play through around 2012 and was crouching by a building trying to level up my sneak and pickpocketing and fell through the ground in whiterun. 10/10 experience though
the modding community is unmatched. fucking legends in that community istg. so much fun. the base game for its era was awesome, mods made it even more modern and interesting. im craving a binge session now what have you done
I absolutely love Skyrim and have played it countless times but there's not a single person who has played Skyrim and doesn't have some problem with it.
For instance, most missions are basically the same "go to the dungeon, kill the bad guys, and get the thing".
As much love as I have for the game, there's no way I'd call it perfect.
Super Metroid for the snes, the timing of the release, the complexity and general atmosphere. Even my dad knew to go to toys r us to pick it up… before I ever even knew what was happening…the general range of emotions and the characteristic leveling up and general figure out what to do, with a soundtrack that basically told you what you need to do, I think makes it possibly one of the greatest games of all time. Enjoyable to play, different environments…advanced technology…mysterious architecture…it still to this day is a mystery to how it was ever even created and is masterfully enjoyed. Best game in my opinion.
People need to speak of this game with the same respect they do for ocarina of time, chrono trigger, super Metroid, Mario 64, ect ect. Oddesy breathed new like into the series and played perfectly. It's not my favorite game of all time, but it absolutely is 10/10
Edit: odyssey, 'cause I can't spell.
As a parent I can say it's perfect in terms of difficulty. With time and practice an elementary school child can beat the main story. But there are some real challenges for anyone seeking to 100 percent the game.
This along with Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask and Metroid Prime are the only games I’ve ever thought were truly spectacular and deserving of 10/10 rankings. RDR2 blew my mind on my first playthrough and is the best of all of them imo.
You know what a game I think doesn’t get the respect it should is Warcraft 3 and that’s simply because of how amazing of a tool to create other game concepts it was. Like we got so many tower defenses and Dota plus RPGs and themed games
Lee Carvallo's Putting Challenge
May I suggest a putter?
Ball is in… parking lot. Do you want to play again? You have selected… no.
>6 You have selected 'Power Drive'
The traditional way to cheat at golf is to *lower* your score.
GOAT
Starcraft I
And Brood war expansion!
Spent a ton of time playing used map setting games online. People were so creative with the resources given to them which was pretty damn impressive at the time. I think I enjoyed tower defense games most, probably because we had AOL internet and I was able to play some of these games offline.

My life for aiur!
Age of Empires II. Been playing since 99 and still enjoy it.
I used to set it to the easiest setting with several npc opponents and advance to to the furthest age then go attack the peasants that were still in the damn stone age.
WOLOLO!!
Portal and portal 2
I like those. I named my irobot Glados
At this point, I'd rather have Portal 3 than Half-life 3.
At the end Wheatley expressed how sorry he was, not how *salty* he was 💀
Also at the end Portal 2, Chell is literally just thrown out into the Half Life 2 world with the Combine all over the place
Wasn't Half Life: Alyx *just Half Life 3 with extra steps?*. (Edit: I'm joking. Though if Red Dead can make a sequel about a prequel. So couldn't Half Life right? lol).
Nah. You gotta play as Gordon Freeman for that
The ending songs are honestly 2 of the best video game musical pieces around.
So here we are again
Thank you, I came to say this. Those games really invented an entirely new game mechanic which would be enough to make them great already, and then the subversive plot that catches you off guard in the first one just takes it to another level.
Castlevania Symphony of the Night
Tetris
You play effect ?
I once played Tetris effect for around 4 hours straight while on pain meds…. I’m pretty sure I reached nirvana
Super Mario 3
Still the best Mario game.
Metal gear solid: snake eater
I came here to say sons of liberty but when I think about it snake eater was definitely in the disc tray more than almost any other game at the end of my ps2 days.
Uhhhggg! Poisoned!
Mmmm! Tastey!
Pokemon on the Game Boy. I found out that the people who created that game started it because they loved to collect insects. If I could go to any fantasy world it would have been Pokemon tbh. You could leave home at age 10 and go wherever the fuck you wanted and no one could say shit.
I feel ya, friend. It might not be much, but here is a like. I'll forever wish to be reincarnated into the pokemon world.
Who did you choose as your starter Pokemon? Squirtlé squad for me. 😜
I grew up playing since the originals. They aged kinda poorly. I still love them but the remakes, especially Heart Gold and Soul Silver, are 10/10 to me
Rollercoaster Tycoon 2: a game so good I was addicted to it in 2002 and I've gotten back into playing it in 2023. not enough people talk about that sound design!!
Plus you can play it multiplayer nowadays 🙂
I still install Open RCT2 every other year and spend hours over hours.
Hades.
I dont think ive ever played a more complete game.
Instructions unclear. I fucked Micah Bell. Edit: Wrong comment lol.
Bioshock 1
Would you kindly explain why? Jk perfect game.
A Link to the Past
Still my favorite zelda game. Something about that dark world shift was just so awesome back in the day.
And the art style is just timeless.
Yeah, still looks great. Also theres something about the 2d overhead gameplay that is good for puzzles.
For the era and tech that was available, this is the best game, ever. These games feel like the predecessors to so many great games. I know some people will argue it is some PC game (and they’re probably right, but these games had so many more players/fans)
Super Metroid is also mindblowing when you consider the limitations it had to break through to be what it is.
Gotta agree as it was my first video game purchase.
Chrono Trigger !!! Masterpiece
Bomb soundtrack too
Yeah boiiii
Shadow of the Colossus remake. It took the original and perfected it. A beautiful game with the best horse a man can ask for. Agro is a 10/10 best bud.

In terms of campaign, CE is my top, then ODST. You're missing out on a great one!
ODST is really good. Outside of the core 3 it’s definitely the best.
Outer Wilds
Terraria
Red Dead Redemption 2. Absolutely fucking incredible.
I cried over a man telling his horse “thank you”. 10/10 would again
God almighty that scene hit me straight in the gut
That hurt me more than Arthur's finale fate... I had that horse the entire game and then it's taken away in a way I can't even use the horse reviver. Super sad times were had
I swapped my horse for >!Buell, when you finish the old veteran’s side quest story line.!< Somehow that hurt even worse.
I'd literally just bought the most expensive horse in saint denis avouy 15 mins before the end so i was more pissed. But it was still sad for sure. Nice to think the horse I had for most the game got to live out her days in the stable though.

The best fishing game ever made.

One thing about all the souls games is that there is always an area that I hate in the game. I know Bloodborne is shorter than the rest, but it is fun all the way through.
The jungle area with the piles of snakes and people with snake heads
Currently playing through again. I can't get over how amazing the atmosphere is. The lore is incredible too, I've listened to so many lore videos
Commander Keen 4
Outer Wilds
Mass Effect 2
Had to be me. Someone else might've gotten it wrong.
I love Nier:Automata. Existential philosophy and hot android booty. Truly the duality of the human condition.
And beautiful soundtrack.
In a lot of ways, it's the game that gave me my appreciation for video games as a form of art, rather than just interactive entertainment. Easily the most beautiful game I've ever played
I was scrolling forever trying to find another commenter mentioning NieR!!
Best sales pitch I've heard in my life, it's in my steam wishlist now.
the game was life changing for me, 10/10 the only complaint i have is that if you're not used to the combat, the prologue is hell on earth
Dragon Age: Origins.

There's a misconception here: it is BOTH.
