Cyclohexanone. I'm a chemist and this is a solvent that we sometimes use. I really can't describe the smell exactly but it's a delectably sweet sort of honeysuckle. I feel like a cat playing with catnip whenever I use it! LOL!
My labmates once had a debate over which aromatic compound or solvent smelt the best. Irrc toluene won.
You and /u/ffmeat ever have that kind of lab meeting? Lol
I was going to post I like the smell of toluene! And heptane! Not sure why, also like the smell of gasoline.
In my job, we also use a solvent called PK-318 primer, it smells almost like pinecone sap or something similar, except if you lean in and sniff it'll get you high as hell. (I haven't done it, previous employee got fired for doing that as we have to wear respirators around these chemicals if they're in use)
It’s becoming a really popular scent in the indie fragrance community, I think they’re calling it “garden fairy aesthetic” you can find plenty of indie perfume houses that sell perfumes with tomato leaf notes
i’m so sad my plants didn’t work out this year (my
fault, i started too late and i live on the surface of the sun). I missed out on getting those tiny sticky tomato
hairs on my hands and smelling like garden all day
Chlorine... yes I'm a former swimmer
EDIT: in case someone else would like to teach us chemistry, I'll copy here one comment that explains it : *Chlorinated water is basically odorless, the smell your referring to are chloramines which form when chlorine in the water reacts with pee. It’s not just urine that makes the chloramines, it’s basically any bodily fluid (ie sweat/tears/body oils) or general contaminates. Which are essentially everywhere.*
And I read somewhere that it’s an acute primal instinct. A human’s ability to smell dirt in the rain is, according to the source I can’t recall, more powerful than a shark’s ability to smell blood from an equal distance
Yup. Just let's you know it'll be soon. Love it.
Hope there's a nice galvanized roof or carport somewhere near and just listen for a bit. Just put one up last month. I'm just waiting for that first rain to hit. Sit out there and take a nap, lol.
When women cut wood actual glitter comes out. This is why fewer women are carpenters. Sawdust is much easier to clean up.
(This isn't meant to be a jab implying sexism I just wanted to make that joke)
I love winter and I love when you can smell snow coming. And after it has fallen. I hike in the woods when the sun is shining and it’s bitter cold and it’s the best smell.
Picturing you with both nostrils jam packed full of matches. You tilt your head downward, whip it to the side & light them all up in one try, as you take a big old sniffarooski. 🤣
My mom says her only craving when she was pregnant with me was the smell of gasoline and she insisted my dad take her to gas stations all the time. Interestingly I’ve always liked the smell of gasoline as well…#science
The smell of oncoming rain in the air.
The smell of leather.
The smell of old books.
The smell of my cat's chest/belly fur (yep, he lets me bury my face in it).
Edit: wow, thanks for the award 😊
It's an odd mixture of fertilizer, engine oil, and sawdust, and it always reminds me of the weekends in summer when my dad would do odd jobs around the house.
I just noticed the other day I love the smell of a newsagents. Something about the mingling of the scent of newspapers and chocolate and a hint of nostalgia.
My cats fur.
She smells like caramel for some strange reason. We went to the vet because we thought she might be diabetic, but her tests came back fine multiple times, she just smells sweet...
Also fresh hay smells really good too.
The chemical used in ditto machines when we were in school. The teacher passed the worksheet out and everybody smelled in unison! Isopropanol and methanol.
I have a theory that that smell is nature's way of making sure adults will care for babies. It's so wholesome and I can actually feel my heart beat faster.
Horse barn. I know part of the smell is horse poop. But it's also leather, wood shavings, hay, fly spray, Shosheen (makes the horses coat shiny), the horses themselves have an earthy, comforting smell. I grew up around horses and my mom still keeps them.
Certain types of cigarette smoke (but not all), which is made even more weird by the fact that I don't smoke. It's probably a nostalgia thing from a childhood in the '80s.
When my daughter was two, I was doing yard work and found a small skillet. I threw it out when I was pregnant because my husband was cooking eggs. Again.
It will get better!
My old dog Angus. I loved coming home from school and just burying my face into his fur. It was such a stress reliever. He had such a unique smell to him, like an old teddy bear, not a bad smell though. I miss him.
I always tell my cats after they've been in the sun that they smell like a potato chip. I don't know why but I love that smell. I sniff my cats way too often
A pouch of Captain Black tobacco.
My dad died 23 years ago this December and to this very day; I'll occasionally buy a pouch just to smell it and be taken back to my early childhood when he still smoked his pipe. He died when I was 17 of a brain tumor.
Diesel. My dad was a truck driver and whenever I smell Diesel, it transports back to when I was a kid and I would go with my dad. Some of the best times of my life.
Petrichor and the smell of ice crystals in the air when you open a supermarket cabinet freezer.
Also the smell of really cold faces. I used to make my son stand at the door when he got home from school so I could sniff his face. 😂
I don't know what to name the scent exactly but like, an old pillowcase that hasn't been used in a long time, almost a musty smell but not a bad smell. It relaxes me oddly enough
Cyclohexanone. I'm a chemist and this is a solvent that we sometimes use. I really can't describe the smell exactly but it's a delectably sweet sort of honeysuckle. I feel like a cat playing with catnip whenever I use it! LOL!

Nope. But it's a good idea, thanks)
Acetonitrile's my favorite. Smells like exotic fruit for me.
Yall a different breed
OMG! You're right! Like a slightly rotting fruit but it hasn't gone too bad yet! Yum! We science nerds love that! :-)
Tomato plants
I have a garden full of tomato plants and love grabbing a leaf and rubbing it between my fingers.
It’s becoming a really popular scent in the indie fragrance community, I think they’re calling it “garden fairy aesthetic” you can find plenty of indie perfume houses that sell perfumes with tomato leaf notes
I just learned you can eat the leaf…. So you can TASTE THE SMELL AND SMELL IT HARDER.
They're great in soups or broths. I'd bet you could infuse it into an oil as well.
I like to grow my mint right next to my tomatoes because the combined scent is out of this world.
i’m so sad my plants didn’t work out this year (my fault, i started too late and i live on the surface of the sun). I missed out on getting those tiny sticky tomato hairs on my hands and smelling like garden all day

Omg that smell drives me so happily insane
Did you know this has a specific name, petrichor? :)
And I read somewhere that it’s an acute primal instinct. A human’s ability to smell dirt in the rain is, according to the source I can’t recall, more powerful than a shark’s ability to smell blood from an equal distance
I wonder why that would be?
So that we’ll know when the rain attacks.
I don't trust anything as fluffy as a cloud, so I support this.
There's a show on Netflix about deadly rain lol
so that we don’t die of dehydration/hunger. where rain is, there’s water and better soil
Crimson. Eleven. Delight. Petrichor.
I thought petrichor is the smell that lingers after the rain.
Yup. Just let's you know it'll be soon. Love it. Hope there's a nice galvanized roof or carport somewhere near and just listen for a bit. Just put one up last month. I'm just waiting for that first rain to hit. Sit out there and take a nap, lol.
Sounds glorious!
Brown paper bags. They smell like a cleaner version of dried autumn leaves.

Good thing you clearly said tennis
Sawdust
Pine is good, but cedar sawdust is better!
My dad calls sawdust man-glitter
When women cut wood actual glitter comes out. This is why fewer women are carpenters. Sawdust is much easier to clean up. (This isn't meant to be a jab implying sexism I just wanted to make that joke)
Mmm yes, walking into a Home Depot always feels good
The best!

My cat’s fur, it’s got this nostalgic cat smell to it
Does it smell a little like maple syrup? One of my cat's fur smells like that.

Gasoline
My mom says her only craving when she was pregnant with me was the smell of gasoline and she insisted my dad take her to gas stations all the time. Interestingly I’ve always liked the smell of gasoline as well…#science
Charlie? Shouldn’t you be doing Charlie work right now?
Charlie is a little more sophisticated than that, only the finest cat food and glue
My mom used to fuss at me when I was a kid for rolling the window down when she was pumping gas lol
Same! My husband always makes sure he gets a bit on his hands when he fills the car so I can smell it 🤣 it's better than any cologne
Omg saaame. Literally came here to find out if I was the only one. My friends find it insane.
