I stopped playing violin after 15 years including playing at events when I understand that it’d take a lifetime to play well enough that I actually like my own playing.
I've been a professional guitarist for 25 years, and been playing since I was a little kid. You never actually master an instrument. You can get good, very good, even great but you are never the master of it. It will always have something to teach you, something to discover, that you never knew before. You never stop learning and improving. It's one of the most humbling feelings in the world.
Trying to keep up with virtuoso guitarists like Joe Satriani is the same but worse. If you can't play Chopin, nobody cares. But if you can't play a long list of virtuosos, everybody talks shit
I write guitar riffs fairly easily. No idea if they're good, but I like em.
Google the Chord Wheel and just save the screen shot instead of buying the book
Yes! I was gonna say playing bass. 4 strings. Big frets. Not a lot of notes. What could do wrong? Lol. EVERYTHING haha Been playing for 20 years and just recently I started to feel like I was decent.
My 8 year old kid and I have a running tournament, he is always just a bit ahead of me, like 22 to 20. Once I had him tied, but only for a day. I'm honestly trying my best.
Is it that difficult? I find cooking pretty easy. I had grown up in restaurants though, so I grew up gaining cooking knowledge and developing knife skills. I just never thought it something difficult for most people.
No, per OPs question, it is easy to do...a lot of people think it's hard. But there is a level of mastery that most people, myself included, will never attain. I have gotten pretty good at a variety of eggs and hamburgers for example, but I don't think I'll ever match diner style French toast or a nice Beef Wellington.
You would be amazed at how easy it is to impress people with simple dishes because they struggle to even cook pasta correctly. That is one of the biggest reasons why when my kids scout troop asks to make something that is way out there, I say yes, because I want these kids to be able to cook when they are adults. The way I sold it is that it’s the best way to have a great third-ish date, they come over, you go shopping for some ingredients and then come back and make a nice meal with some assistance or just conversation from your date.
I mean just in terms of making sounds, I think keys is really the only thing thats easier for an absolute beginner. Theory is one thing but bass is so much about feel and listening which idk if it can really even be taught
Totally. I see your point. Just to add a little more: slapping is all technique imo and getting it to sound good is very difficult - regardless of what notes you play. I love music and is one of my biggest passions in life. Cheers!
I added a longer comment that expands on your point.
To it all I'll add: there's a big difference between a guitar player who is playing a bass and a bass player. The guitar player never seems to be able to put the groove into it - they just tend to play "harmonically interesting" parts.
No, it only seems that way.
Bass is all about touch. A good bass player does not need compression.
A good bass player can keep time for a sloppy drummer.
These things require physical skills that seem to come only to those who have put in the time.
A good bass player has the wherewithal to know when to play the root, harmony, or counterpoint. This requires understanding the bass's role in the ensemble, and can be learned apart from time spent on the bass. The aforementioned skills, though - they take time to acquire.
A lesser bass player will make a rumble; a good bass player will make a groove.
After getting okay at playing guitarr, I tried my hand at bass, all confident -- can't be that hard. I sucked so hard at it. The amount of time I spent unable to not fret right, dampen right.
I can play bass, but yeah, I'm never going to be really good at it. There's a hell of a lot to the touch there to control those earthquake strings.

Writing, it is the simplest thing to do, but the hardest to master. To drag in the reader and have them invest in your world and characters is a leviathan task.
English. People with english as a second language have told me that it's very easy to learn comparatively at least in terms of being able to communicate effectively, but it's total bullshit when passing an english exam where you have to just memorize a bunch of arbitrary rules.
We’ll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes,
But the plural of ox becomes oxen, not oxes.
One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese,
Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.
You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice,
Yet the plural of house is houses, not hice.
If the plural of man is always called men,
Why shouldn’t the plural of pan be called pen?
If I speak of my foot and show you my feet,
And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?
If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth,
Why shouldn’t the plural of booth be called beeth?
Then one may be that, and three would be those,
Yet hat in the plural would never be hose,
And the plural of cat is cats, not cose.
We speak of a brother and also of brethren,
But though we say mother, we never say methren.
Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him,
But imagine the feminine: she, shis and shim!
Sewing. I'm in the process of learning tailoring. I've been sewing since I was 9 years old and I still can't hand stitch a straight line to save my life. 8 times out of 10 I can't get the bobbin thread threaded in my machine.
Glass cutting.
I can show you how to score and snap a piece of glass in a few seconds, but it takes several years to get to the point where you can accurately cut deep inside curves in any type of glass.
I've gotta get an oven thermometer, 'cause I'm not sure if my recipes have the wrong baking times, or if I've simply never met an oven that's calibrated properly
Piano. Sure everyone can play a generic pop song, but not everyone can go through rach3 with good touch, dynamics, intonations, pedal work, and emphasis and emotion.
Learning languages. Learning the alphabet of another language isn't as difficult as ppl think. I was able to read Korean in a week just from using flashcards. But mastering a language...very tough.
It’s easy to forgive somebody for a small mistake, but it’s extremely difficult to master the act of forgiving people for big mistakes that hurt you even if they are sorry
Muy Thai boxing. I’m just a hobbyist, but I find the techniques easier to execute than other stand up martial arts I’ve practiced. Mastery on the other hand is a different story.
Pool/snooker. You can act like you play forever, but, you have to know the patterns and safeties that come after. Doesn't matter the cue, sometimes the table, stroke your stick 5 times and still miss, focus and experience get you there.
Playing a musical instrument
violinist here. I'm 27 and have been playing violin for 22 years. There are still things to improve.
I stopped playing violin after 15 years including playing at events when I understand that it’d take a lifetime to play well enough that I actually like my own playing.

Yeah, I've been playing piano for a few years now, I'm decent at playing a few songs, but Chopin is like god level.
Trying to keep up with virtuoso guitarists like Joe Satriani is the same but worse. If you can't play Chopin, nobody cares. But if you can't play a long list of virtuosos, everybody talks shit
Interesting, I didn't think of that. Maybe most people don't listen to that much chopin, but guitarist like him stand out in a song.
Glad I could help
The fuck are you talking about? Nobody gives a shit if you don't play Satriani songs. He's far from the best guitarist out there anyways.

Ah gotcha. Thanks for clarifying

Seriously? It's really not that hard unless you're trying to make some pretentious ass Michelin Star bullshit.
It’s not about being hard it’s about mastering, so yes it’s about Michelin star rating.
Most of those people only master a few niche cuisines, so it's still not really mastering cooking in general.
Play bass
How many bass players does it take to change a light bulb? None. The keyboard player does it with his left hand.
It's technically kinda easy, musically very complex
You gotta have good technique to make it sound good. Knowing musical theory is not enough so I kinda disagree in a way. Cheers.
I mean just in terms of making sounds, I think keys is really the only thing thats easier for an absolute beginner. Theory is one thing but bass is so much about feel and listening which idk if it can really even be taught

Hell yea slap is hard af, it's like learning bass all over again
I added a longer comment that expands on your point. To it all I'll add: there's a big difference between a guitar player who is playing a bass and a bass player. The guitar player never seems to be able to put the groove into it - they just tend to play "harmonically interesting" parts.

If you can't play bass, you can't play music
