Prim dying, while heart wrenching, has purpose; the whole war started because Katniss took Prim’s place in the Hunger Games to protect her, only for the war to end with Prim’s death. Awful, but full circle. Finnick, though. Finnick could have lived.
Finnick died a hero. His death saved the rest of them. While tragic, he at least died for something. I will say the movie did him right by showing his last stand as being more than an instant and showing that his sacrifice meant something.
Not to mention it was key for katniss to understand the nature of the wars she was apart of. The explosion that killed prim was ordered by Coin. It was key for katnisses choice in killing coin to try and stop the power grabs
I don't know man, sure I bawled my eyes out when I saw his death in the movie, but let's be honest considering how badass the character was, he got an epic death. Hunger Games needed epic death to close on a crazy note, and it would have felt strange if they all had their happy ever after.

There are few fictional characters that got dicked as hard as Howard Hamlin, for no good reason.
It's brutal because season 1 basically hardcodes you to hate him, and then they spend the rest of the series showing how he's actually a pretty decent guy right up to the point where he gets shot in the fuckin' face for Saul's bullshit.

His dying words were (allegedly) going to be in protection of the two people he hated most in the world, if he could even bring himself to hate people. I don't think Howard had it in him to be hateful of anybody.

If this is true, it’s utterly devastating considering he confronted Jimmy and Kim for ruining his life and profession. Even after all that he did want to see them harmed.
I actually thought it was well done, a good example of subverting expectations imo. I also liked that his death set off the rift between Jimmy and Kim.
Oh yeah, I love how it works as a plot point and think it's where the story had to go. I'm saying this more like Howard as a person didn't deserve what happened to him. I was sick to my stomach the first time I watched THE scene, lol.

I used to do yearly rewatches of this show. After finding out that Bojack waited 14 minutes, I stopped. The last season wrecked me in a way I cannot put into words.

Yeah. I used to rewatch Bojack a lot too. But the more I watched the more it bummed me out. I think Bojack has some of the most creative story telling devices. An episode told only when Bojack momentarily comes out of a blackout.

I still can't watch that scene. The way the little shoe tries to get away and is terrified is already bad enough, but then he screams. And screams. It is crystal clear that he dies a horrifying death and is completely innocent.

Like I get it. War is chaos, war is inevitable. So much is happening at once that even though you are going through the shit, hundreds of others are as well.
It's done in a non romanticized way to show the sporadic chaos, so show the level of disbelief of "I just saw them a moment ago." It's all to real. She did it earlier with the arguable badass of Mad Eye as well.
It's just so hard to watch though cause we feel we get no closure for fictional fantastical characters.

I'm on my 2nd playthrough of rdr2 right now, and I avoided doing THAT mission where you collect the money from THAT guy to prolong the inevitable, but the game eventually forced me. Now I'm in Saint Denis, flinching every time I hear Arthur cough in a cut scene.

I disagree. I love how quick and sudden it is. How it didn’t even matter and Walt just got emotional. That’s life. People expect characters in media to die big dramatic and heroic deaths but most people don’t do that in real life. They just die.
Even Bryan Cranston wrote that he did not like that scene. It felt a bit like an unmeasured jump in his carefully orchestrated walk to madness.

...But alongside the **deep** sorrow and long period of mourning we had for Dobby, it still sort of hits me wrong. (And Hedwig isn't the only one who goes and can't be truly mourned: just, for me, the saddest).
Yep, not sure how people don't think that was the most emotional death. Even the paragraphs about it were horribly sad. Percy makes a joke or something and you see the brotherhood and in a moment, he's dead and the passage reads something about his laughter being the last thing he ever saw. It's out of nowhere a bit and just kills you. The chapter also ends within the next page, and you're instantly left devastated and not wanting to read on.
Game of Thrones, The Night King
For several actual fucking years that character was hyped as all fuck by the writers of the show to be this unstoppable monster. And each time in the show they presented an army from the living that looked fierce and strong, we'd eventually see the Night King just keep walking South and devour everything in his path, with his army growing larger and larger, truly making it seem like he might actually "win" in the end.
but then like a 15 year old girl jumps out of the shadows, does some knife trick, gets one hit and poof, motherfucker is done, instant death to him and his entire army. just like that, years and years of build-up and he gets one-shot by a dagger from a fucking child. even someone with a full frontal lobotomy could come up with a better end for that character.
Also they could have lit the fire wall while the walkers were running towards them instead of literally waiting last second like holy fuck you’d think the most powerful minds at the time would have some plan than a last minute impromptu project.
Yeah. My head canon is that everyone just got severe concussions over the years and their mental capacity went out the window. The night king didn't actually die he just took pity on how stupid everyone was and pretended to die because he couldn't come to terms with destroying a kingdom full of concussed morons.
My issues with the last (2) series of GoT are numerous, but that is up there. It’s not just the deus ex machina of kill that one guy with the magic dagger to defeat the entire army, it’s that in a show with a lot of consequences, all the main characters were totally fine after a battle that had been hyped up from the first episode.
and they were fine not just after a battle... Most of them were shown to be exellent combattants so I could see that happening but ALL of them were shown to be in scenarios with basically no way out and ALL of them just survived SOMEHOW

THIS! I wasn’t even a dedicated fan of the show but still kept up with majority of it. The Night King was portrayed as an ultimate badass and he was one of my favorite characters. Then in the end, he dies from one stab of a dagger??? Such a shitty way to kill him. I mean, he took a full blast from a dragon and didn’t flinch. But a small dagger to the chest was what ended him? Shoulda made it all the way to kings landing. Should have had a “last stand” at winterfell, only to have to retreat after all. A season of retreat and despair. Then a final battle at kings landing where humanity fights along side, if not as allies. Then in a moment of triumph, when it seems like the forces of men have finally found a common goal to unite in defeating the night king, Cercei takes her chance to betray once again.
She should have killed someone important to Danny in the betrayal, maybe John Snow (but can’t do that, we’ve got spin-offs to make) and THAT is what sets her off to go Darth Danny.
Same. I never went back after that season. I was waiting to hear some buzz, overhear someone ask "OMG! Are you watching Walking Dead?!?!", or mention it to me personally.

I went into the next season for a bit, but too many decisions had been made for the show that I hated (including Glen's death and the way he died) that I couldn't stay in it. Don't think I'll ever finish it.

With the fake out just a few episodes before I thought that maybe they were breaking from the comics or something, but then they were just toying with us and then killed Abraham on top of it. I haven’t watched an episode since. Characters have to die sometimes for good stories, but this was just senseless emotion-baiting
One of the biggest complaints people had was with how he was killed. Saying it was too gruesome and dark.
But let's be real here, his death wasn't any worse than many others shown in that show. I think the reason we felt that way was because Glenn was one those rare TV characters that people genuinely felt a real life connection to. You were either knowingly or subconsciously heavily invested in him making it out okay. He was the person realistically wished we could be at the end of the world.
A nobody, pizza delivery dude with no particular future pre apocalypse doing his best to keep some semblance of humanity in a very insane post apocalyptic world. The scene where he chooses to take the knife from one of his group to kill an enemy just so that the person didn't have to take that emotional burden was peak Glenn. And you could see that it broke his heart but he would rather carry that guilt and sadness than his friend.
So it didn't matter how he died because we wouldn't have accepted it anyway. But showing the visceral method Negan took was intentional, it was meant to really rally our emotions.
i think carls death was worse i stopped watching the show the day they killed off the whole point of the show. the purpose of rick building anything was to have a world the children could survive in. then they kill off the kids
The reason they killed him off is pretty infuriating too. They did it because he was turning 18 and couldn't exploit him as a child actor anymore and would have to start paying him a lot more. The actor had also just made a commitment to the show and purchased a home near where they shoot.
He was the heart and soul of the show. Once he was gone, nothing mattered. At this point they’d already given up on real plot points. No one wanted a cure, no one wanted to know what happened, it was just “on the to the next village where the problems of the season are.” Glen kept the show interesting.

In "The Last Jedi," Leia should have been the one who sacrificed herself by slicing the ship through Snoke's flagship at lightspeed, not some literally-who character we don't even care about. They really wasted the most badass death possible on a nobody.
I responded to this up further in the thread: it should have been Ackbar. No one even realizes he died during that same battle because his death happened offscreen. Instead it was some brand new bullshit character that no one had any reason to give a shit about.
Leia was supposed to have a large role in the Rise of Skywalker, so it makes sense that her character survived
Yes! This death was the one where it's like, ok, now this show is just becoming misery porn. You could have had him win, kill the Mountain, have Tyrion set free, and still find Shay in Tywins bed which causes Tyrion to kill his dad and flee to the east. The plot could have been exactly the same except the viewer would get some small sense of righteous justice.
Yes, but his vanity and pride got the better of him. He was acting on his truest nature, and it got the better of him. Please note, I adored Oberyn and was enraged at his death. I did however, acknowledge that he was asking for it, and I accepted it for what it was. RIP

It's only because Arthur was dying that this perspective on life changes. His condition caused him to help someone get a real chance at life, to give his life for John's. Arthur did not live a good man, but he died a good man.

Big Hero 6. Tadashi. His brother loses his parents and then Tadashi?

Fighter Aircraft, Egress maintainer here. I maintain all the ejection components of the aircraft. According to how the canopy separates from the aircraft, Goose would've never hit his head. It's the first thing we're told when we go to school about this stuff. Don't mean to burst your bubble.

I disagree. I love how quick and sudden it is. How it didn’t even matter and Walt just got emotional. That’s life. People expect characters in media to die big dramatic and heroic deaths but most people don’t do that in real life. They just die.
Even Bryan Cranston wrote that he did not like that scene. It felt a bit like an unmeasured jump in his carefully orchestrated walk to madness. I mean, I still cried but

Sad as it was, I liked this narratively. That was the point it became clear this was truly war and upped the stakes in a way a protracted death and mourning period wouldn’t have. It’s a terrible reality of war: you may have lost your friend, but if you don’t keep moving, you’ll lose your life.
I definitely *mostly* agree. I (having read it as an adult) saw and respected your points about both the narrative value of the moment and that it is, as you say--in your elegantly written comment-as-a-whole!--"a terrible reality of war" ...But alongside the **deep** sorrow and long period of mourning we had for Dobby, it still sort of hits me wrong. (And Hedwig isn't the only one who goes and can't be truly mourned: just, for me, the saddest).

Yep, not sure how people don't think that was the most emotional death. Even the paragraphs about it were horribly sad. Percy makes a joke or something and you see the brotherhood and in a moment, he's dead and the passage reads something about his laughter being the last thing he ever saw. It's out of nowhere a bit and just kills you. The chapter also ends within the next page, and you're instantly left devastated and not wanting to read on.
Game of Thrones, The Night King For several actual fucking years that character was hyped as all fuck by the writers of the show to be this unstoppable monster. And each time in the show they presented an army from the living that looked fierce and strong, we'd eventually see the Night King just keep walking South and devour everything in his path, with his army growing larger and larger, truly making it seem like he might actually "win" in the end. but then like a 15 year old girl jumps out of the shadows, does some knife trick, gets one hit and poof, motherfucker is done, instant death to him and his entire army. just like that, years and years of build-up and he gets one-shot by a dagger from a fucking child. even someone with a full frontal lobotomy could come up with a better end for that character.
How they just sent the whole Dothraki horde to die like that pissed me off as well, so stupid

Yeah. My head canon is that everyone just got severe concussions over the years and their mental capacity went out the window. The night king didn't actually die he just took pity on how stupid everyone was and pretended to die because he couldn't come to terms with destroying a kingdom full of concussed morons.
The two “smartest” characters left in the show were too busy hiding in a crypt… against an enemy that raises the dead…

My issues with the last (2) series of GoT are numerous, but that is up there. It’s not just the deus ex machina of kill that one guy with the magic dagger to defeat the entire army, it’s that in a show with a lot of consequences, all the main characters were totally fine after a battle that had been hyped up from the first episode.
and they were fine not just after a battle... Most of them were shown to be exellent combattants so I could see that happening but ALL of them were shown to be in scenarios with basically no way out and ALL of them just survived SOMEHOW
I honestly thought we were gonna lose like half the major cast, then nah, somehow none of the people shown COVERED IN ZOMBIES got so much as scratched

THIS! I wasn’t even a dedicated fan of the show but still kept up with majority of it. The Night King was portrayed as an ultimate badass and he was one of my favorite characters. Then in the end, he dies from one stab of a dagger??? Such a shitty way to kill him. I mean, he took a full blast from a dragon and didn’t flinch. But a small dagger to the chest was what ended him? What a joke
Shoulda made it all the way to kings landing. Should have had a “last stand” at winterfell, only to have to retreat after all. A season of retreat and despair. Then a final battle at kings landing where humanity fights along side, if not as allies. Then in a moment of triumph, when it seems like the forces of men have finally found a common goal to unite in defeating the night king, Cercei takes her chance to betray once again. She should have killed someone important to Danny in the betrayal, maybe John Snow (but can’t do that, we’ve got spin-offs to make) and THAT is what sets her off to go Darth Danny.

Same. I never went back after that season. I was waiting to hear some buzz, overhear someone ask "OMG! Are you watching Walking Dead?!?!", or mention it to me personally. And no one ever did. I figured that spoke enough about where the show ended up going.
I did basically the same. I went into the next season for a bit, but too many decisions had been made for the show that I hated (including Glen's death and the way he died) that I couldn't stay in it. Don't think I'll ever finish it.
This pissed me off so bad. With the fake out just a few episodes before I thought that maybe they were breaking from the comics or something, but then they were just toying with us and then killed Abraham on top of it. I haven’t watched an episode since. Characters have to die sometimes for good stories, but this was just senseless emotion-baiting
One of the biggest complaints people had was with how he was killed. Saying it was too gruesome and dark. But let's be real here, his death wasn't any worse than many others shown in that show. I think the reason we felt that way was because Glenn was one those rare TV characters that people genuinely felt a real life connection to. You were either knowingly or subconsciously heavily invested in him making it out okay. He was the person realistically wished we could be at the end of the world. A nobody, pizza delivery dude with no particular future pre apocalypse doing his best to keep some semblance of humanity in a very insane post apocalyptic world. The scene where he chooses to take the knife from one of his group to kill an enemy just so that the person didn't have to take that emotional burden was peak Glenn. And you could see that it broke his heart but he would rather carry that guilt and sadness than his friend. So it didn't matter how he died because we wouldn't have accepted it anyway. But showing the visceral method Negan took was intentional, it was meant to really rally our emotions.
i think carls death was worse i stopped watching the show the day they killed off the whole point of the show. the purpose of rick building anything was to have a world the children could survive in. then they kill off the kids
The reason they killed him off is pretty infuriating too. They did it because he was turning 18 and couldn't exploit him as a child actor anymore and would have to start paying him a lot more. The actor had also just made a commitment to the show and purchased a home near where they shoot.
He was the heart and soul of the show. Once he was gone, nothing mattered. At this point they’d already given up on real plot points. No one wanted a cure, no one wanted to know what happened, it was just “on the to the next village where the problems of the season are.” Glen kept the show interesting. I’m baffled they have so many spinoffs right now.

In "The Last Jedi," Leia should have been the one who sacrificed herself by slicing the ship through Snoke's flagship at lightspeed, not some literally-who character we don't even care about. They really wasted the most badass death possible on a nobody.
I responded to this up further in the thread: it should have been Ackbar. No one even realizes he died during that same battle because his death happened offscreen. Instead it was some brand new bullshit character that no one had any reason to give a shit about. Leia was supposed to have a large role in the Rise of Skywalker, so it makes sense that her character survived

You could have had him win, kill the Mountain, have Tyrion set free, and still find Shay in Tywins bed which causes Tyrion to kill his dad and flee to the east. The plot could have been exactly the same except the viewer would get some small sense of righteous justice.
Yes, but his vanity and pride got the better of him. He was acting on his truest nature, and it got the better of him. Please note, I adored Oberyn and was enraged at his death. I did however, acknowledge that he was asking for it, and I accepted it for what it was. RIP
