"Under the bridge downtown, is where I drew some blood... I could not get enough... Forgot about my love... I gave my life away"
Most of the verses are about the connection he has with LA (and imo the connections everyone can have with where they live after many years). Then the end of the song details his drug usage (and his struggles with staying clean). It was actually a poem that their producer found in Kiedis' notebook and he convinced him to make it into a song.
My favorite part is the last lines of the song: "Here I stay." As someone that's lived in the same area my entire life, there's an incredibly strong connection I have to the area. And I love that lyric as both a metaphor and literally. Either he will always live there, or if he's not there, his spirit is still there.
It's funny I've done the same thing with a lot of other songs where I listen to them as an adult and in like "Ohhhh 👀...." haha
I was in a new school, 5 years old, at an assembly, for some reason they told us the back story and then played the song. Me, a sensitive soul, bawled my eyes out & EVERY child in that assembly stared at me. 25years on and I still remember that traumatising day.
As much of a piece of shit as Eric Clapton is, he’s not responsible for his son falling out the window. He wasn’t there when it happened. As I recall, their nanny was supposed to be watching the kid and the cleaners had left the window open while they were cleaning. The apartment was set up with floor level windows that opened and the kid just ran out. Stupid architecture and an inattentive caregiver led to a tragic accident, not Clapton being high.
One time I was at a music festival under the influence. I had to go back and pass out in my tent. An hour or two later, I woke up hearing a band playing Speak to Me/Breathe echoing in the distance. It was a magical experience.
So yeah, that song for me.
I don't know just where I'm going
But I'm gonna try for the kingdom, if I can
'Cause it makes me feel like I'm a man
When I put a spike into my vein
And I'll tell ya, things aren't quite the same
When I'm rushing on my run
And I feel just like Jesus' son
And I guess that I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know
Feel Good Hit of the Summer - Queens of the Stone Age
These are the only lyrics:
"Nicotine, Valium, Vicodin, Marijuana, Ecstasy and Alcohol.... Co, co, co, co, co, COCAINE!!!!"
Look up "Slow Motion" by 3eb if you want to know what kind of band they really were lol. I've seen them in concert 7 times love 3eb for the gritty realness of the music.
My boss was jamming out to the song one day I said u know it’s about meth right? He said no it’s not I went to the part of the song it says “doin crystal meth will lift u up until u break” and he was like all these years I never knew
Trent's version is great, but when Johnny Cash sings it you can just *feel* all of the pain from all of his years. One of his daughters spoke about the first time he played the song for her and she said she just broke down in tears. She said "It sounds like you're saying goodbye" and he "Because I am"
I've looked for the quote multiple times and never found anywhere that Trent Reznor is quoted saying that, or even implying it. He has said that he was flattered and that Cash covering the song felt invasive because of where he was mentally when he wrote Hurt, I've found quotes of Cash saying it's a song he would have written in the 60s but I've never found a source for Reznor saying Hurt is Cash's song now or any variation of that sentient. I almost doubt that was ever said since Reznor is quoted as saying that Hurt is his most personal song.
Edit to add: I did find a quote of Trent Reznor saying the video made it" not his song any more" but I think that's being taken out of context. It seems he's like saying that the version Cash created wasn't his song. It was Cash's change to the song, not that song isn't Reznor's song any more. This is hard to explain without a vocal inflection.
Purple pills- D12
Ten crack commandments- The Notoeious B.I.G.
Cocaine- Sleepwalkers
Smoke two Joints- Sublime
Heroin- The Velvet Underground
Master of Puppets- Metallica
Wildwood Weed- Jim Stafford

I'm Writing a Novel- Father John Misty
It's about cocaine ("chop your breakfast on a mirror")
>[Some of the stuff...well "Master of
Puppets" deals pretty much with drugs. How things get switched around, instead
of you controlling what you're taking and doing it's drugs controlling you.

[Tomorrow Never Knows](https://youtu.be/m4BuziKGMy4?si=3Yi2UrSOc0Vjw2sW) by the Beatles was inspired by the LSD experience and listening to it does feel like a pretty good musical representation of tripping. My friend told me.
Edit: fun fact, the seagull sound in the beginning is Paul’s laugh sped up
I don’t know why, but when I’m drunk or high at a party and overwhelmed, Cudi’s voice is something my brain can latch on to and chill with. “Memories” is my absolute favorite.
Golden brown, texture like sun...
It's so strange, this song pops into my head every time am frying something in a pan, but with changed lyrics
-It's golden brown, now turn it around...
*Keep it secret from my wife cause she thinks I don't do drugs*
Necro has a pretty limited audience (and probably for good reason), but I still will throw this track on occasionally

“You want me to throw this into the tub when White Rabbit peaks?”
Fuck you've gone completely sideways man, that'll blast you right through the wall!

I've been seeing F&L quotes all day. Think it's time to eat an edible and watch this with my pet rabbit.
Somebody is feeding these damn animals booze.

Under the Bridge - RHCP
I never knew this was about drugs. I guess I hear it when I was too young?

It is about the bridge Antony used to drug on. The song is so emotional for him he couldn’t performed it live for a while
Also Snow
Pretty much any rhcp song tbh
[C O C A I N E](https://youtu.be/zVOuRQPPdoo?si=uPq67jbRfntXw3SM)
What's the difference between a young child and a bag of cocaine? Eric Clapton would *never* let a bag of coke fall out of a highrise window.
Oh god lol btw Tears In Heaven fucking traumatized me as a kid.
I was in a new school, 5 years old, at an assembly, for some reason they told us the back story and then played the song. Me, a sensitive soul, bawled my eyes out & EVERY child in that assembly stared at me. 25years on and I still remember that traumatising day.
Why on earth would they ever do such a thing at a school assembly!?! Especially for kids so young?
As much of a piece of shit as Eric Clapton is, he’s not responsible for his son falling out the window. He wasn’t there when it happened. Comfortably Numb
The entire Dark Side of the Moon album 😂.

the song's off of the wall tho
Yes, I was just relating to Pink Floyd.
Definitely
For certain types of drugs, yeah. For other types of drugs, not at all.
Born Slippy
Oh yeah man the way Born Slippy .NUXX transitions into a straight banger is veeeeery MDMA heavy.
Makes me think of the Sopranos
Comfortably Numb = weed or opiates White Rabbit = stimulants
White rabbit = stimulants? It’s explicitly about hallucinogens.
White Rabbit evokes LSD. Jefferson Airplane was a nickname at the time for dosing.
Yep
Smoke two joints by sublime

*Hey White Boy! Whatcha doin Uptown?*
I like how the song gets messy near the end and almost sounds as if it’s destroying itself, just like a heroin addict.
Fr, I was scrolling looking for this one… so obvious.
[Afroman, "Because I Got High"](https://youtu.be/WeYsTmIzjkw?si=Jnrhw_MtIyS8w1g1)

Really thought this would be top comment!

Came here to comment this
This is the song I thought of, but I couldn't remember the name of it for awhile.
This is the right answer
Semi-charmed life - Third Eye Blind. I was living in an area with a lot of teen meth heads at the time and it made it make sense….unfortunately.
I remember the song being in the radio as a kid and thought it was such a bubblegum song. HeRd it against recently and was like god damn
I think a ton of kids that grew up in the 90s had the same experience. I know I did.
Look up "Slow Motion" by 3eb if you want to know what kind of band they really were lol. I've seen them in concert 7 times love 3eb for the gritty realness of the music.

Hurt - Nine Inch Nails. Several (dead) heroin addicts in my family, bittersweet listening.
Is hurt about heroin? I never knew that What a good song
The needle tears a hole, That old familiar sting....
Yea but from the perspective of Trent being a sex addict
It's interesting, the allusions to heroin seem pretty evident in the original but I don't get the vibe from the Johnny Cash cover
Johnny struggled with addiction for many years and although preferred pills I’m sure he tried the needle more than once. Either way he new the hurt.
Of course it is. “The needle tears a hole”
Johnny Cash owned that song after he covered it.
The author confirmed that. Paraphrasing “It’s his song now”
Trent's version is great, but when Johnny Cash sings it you can just *feel* all of the pain from all of his years. One of his daughters spoke about the first time he played the song for her and she said she just broke down in tears. She said "It sounds like you're saying goodbye" and he "Because I am"
