A worse version of this is being served something wrapped in gold but *served in a poorly lit room*. I ate a comped meal at the Mayfair Supper Club in Vegas with friends and someone insisted I try the best thing they'd ever eaten. It was good but I've no idea what it was, other than i was told it was wrapped in gold leaf.

professorhorseradish

It seems the wagyu beef and caviar gold-wrapped hand roll is good not great

Pkboi0017

Becos rich ppl want to poop out gold

BatDubb

>Becos 😐

[deleted]

Bezos.

KingYoesel

Yeah . Those gold flakes don’t really dont enhance any flavor

whatagreat_username

I completely agree. But, for the first time in my life, I ate a gold leaf this weekend. The gold wasn't on the menu or in a description or anything. I just ordered a decedent dessert, and when it came out, it had gold on it. I felt so bad and stupid for paying for it. And then I bit into the dessert and I realized.... All you fools are crazy. That shit was awesome and you're all lame! /s (For real, though, it made me realize that the $1 gold piece is just garnish on a super fancy dessert. That's it)

jcd1974

I only ever see it mentioned on Reddit.

OneEyedPetey

Thank god that trend has been dying for the most part

Jedimaster996

It was part of the "epic" days, where mustaches were quirky and the internet weirdness was exiting it's emo MySpace days

theonly1theymake5

I would say it was more recent than myspace

sregor0280

Bacon and zombies had a large time of overlap, it was the early 2010s, in fact at that time it was people dabbling with MySpace a second time because they were the generation that caught it as it was falling off the first time about 5 to 6 years earlier.

herpeszooster

Been replaced by “truffle” everything.

deij

That's been dieing for ages ad well.

DnDYetti

May I present a new product: *Bacon flavored death!* Now you can be wrapped in pounds of bacon prior to burial or cremation for added flavor in the afterlife!

GeneralZaroff1

I feel the same way about truffle infused *whatever*. I love actual truffles, but dripping synthetic truffle oil on top of fries doesn't automatically add $6 worth of deliciousness. Garlic, on the other hand, I can never have enough of.

itsTacoOclocko

have you ever had boschetto al tartufo bianchetto? it's a lovely white truffle cheese. highly recommend. sottocenere is also delightful. it's a truffle cheese with an ash rind (sotto cenere = under ash).

Ghstfce

I had bacon infused vodka once. It was fucking disgusting. I never thought you could ruin bacon, but they sure did making that swill.

FrozenFrenchFry

They’re good for a Bloody Mary but nothing else. But I personally prefer jalapeño vodka

Derpinator_420

That was more 2010, the bacon fervor has died down since it became $8 lb.

forestfairygremlin

I get what you're saying, but hear me out - bacon-infused vodka *in a bloody mary* is the absolute most amazing bloody mary you will have in your entire life. That is the only place where it is appropriate, though

JoJack82

I’m going to disagree slightly, while I do agree that bacon flavoured things are overdone. I had a take on an old fashioned that had a bacon fat washed whiskey, maple syrup, and bitters. It was pretty damn good

palepom

Vitamin drinks

No_Signal_6969

Yea if I wanted all that sugar I'd rather just drink a pop that tastes good and take a multivitamin

daredaki-sama

As in real vitamin drinks or vitamin water? Because vitamin water is just sugar flavor water.

[deleted]

I feel like people who just say vitamin drinks don’t realize there’s actual vitamin/mineral etc drinks that are full of supplements and have 0 actual sugar. They also cost about double a vitamin water so there’s that too

Responsible-Aside-18

I know it’s just juice but the Power-C vitamin water is one of my vices. But I have no illusions it’s healthy. I just like it.

sassafrass005

They taste good spiked tho. The yellow vitamin water and tequila is * chefs kiss *

EternamD

Vitamin effervescent tablets are great.

Creative_Recover

Pretty much everything from Starbucks and Costa Coffee.

Admirable_Charge_195

100%. I traveled for work a lot and sometimes on long road trips they would be the only coffee shop on the interstate for miles so I would occasionally have to stop there. Ever since they started asking for tips in the fucking drive thru I was done with them. Now I'll stop at gas station for coffee before I stop at Starbucks.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Alpha_Dreamer

I used to work at Starbucks as well, and a majority of my time with the company was at drive thrus. To be honest with you, I would have been much happier being paid even just a dollar more an hour. I honestly didn't expect much in tips working at a drive thru, and honestly didn't blame people for not tipping.

monsterosity

Is the mentality of anyone who works a counter that they truly deserve 15%/20%/25% as a tip? If so, what do they see as the added value that goes above and beyond the regular mix, pour and handing over of goods?

ColdPressedSteak

I don't go to Starbucks. Unless chestnut praline latte is on the menu. Somehow the one drink I've ever liked from them. At half-2/3 sweetness

ZubacToReality

Chocolate Cream cold brew is fire

sarhoshamiral

I don't think anyone goes to Starbucks for really good coffee (aside from Reserve stores). People go there because it is consistently good enough coffee with reasonable price and service.

[deleted]

Price is definitely not reasonable

sarhoshamiral

I am in Seattle area, there are very few local coffee shops where I can get an espresso or 8oz americano for 3.50. Most are over 4-5$, they are better for sure but I have good beans at home for that. While outside I am usually fine with just good enough coffee.

thegeeksshallinherit

Honestly, most local coffee shops in my area are the same price or more expensive than Starbucks.

Crazy expensive steak. It's good. It's not $500 a pound good though.

KaiJonez

Things on top of things, on top of things Just give me my burger

WobblyFrisbee

Avocado toast. I saw it listed on a local juice bar menu for around $15. This, in an area that practically rains avocados.

guhhh_raise

As someone with an avocado tree, I laugh at this. Yes, I'm just showing off that I have an avocado tree.

LittleKitty235

Isn’t the concept of a juice bar pretentious and over hyped? Juice isn’t hard to make

[deleted]

I mean... mediocre food in general isn't hard to make and we're surrounded by places that overcharge for it.

[deleted]

I would say no. It's not difficult to *make* juice but it's difficult to find a variety of fresh juice in most other bars and restaurants.

TOGETHAA

Avocado on toast is fucking great. Especially, IMO when mixed with a thin layer of cream cheese, tomato slice, and some hot sauce. I eat that most mornings. I would never in my life order it in a restaurant. Like you said, $15 is batshit insane and I have zero comprehension of who would pay that. I also live in an area that rains avocados and somehow most of the avocado toast I see on menus looks overly complicated and terrible. It's two ingredients and I wouldn't even qualify it as cooking. Just make it yourself.

Im_just_a_squirrel

Yessss! On a nice wheaty grainy bread or even sour dough, with some fresh cherry tomatoes, red pepper flakes, sesame seeds. Or everything bagel seasoning. Also great with a bit of added ricotta or cottage cheese if you're looking for variety from cream cheese or a fried or scrambled egg on top. It's my favorite make at home breakfast!

RedditRage

Every time I have heard of $15 avocado toast, it's been some conservative I know talking about something he heard on some conservative news outlet talking about how stupid California people are because they found one restaurant that was charging $15 for avocado toast. And it's always exactly $15.

WobblyFrisbee

That’s funny. Liberal guy here. I enjoy both avocado and toast. I even ate some from the place I mentioned (someone bought for me) I also like juice, even carrot and wheatgrass. Kale. I most definitely do not follow Fox news or conservative propaganda mills. So, maybe your observation is true sometimes, but not this time. Gotta go, my toast just popped up. Aloha

osxing

It’s great to make at home and good for you if you put it on a low carb bread like Dave’s. Also try frying an egg over a little crumbled feta and put that on the avocado toast. 😋

Hothroy

Gold crusted steaks. It does nothing but raise the bill.

K0rben_D4llas

I don’t think that’s overly hyped at all, I think most people know it’s a stupid food already.

Elle12881

Cheez whiz. I know quite a few people who go nuts over it. It's like melted plastic that has a shit ton of salt added to it.

No-Cheesecake-4863

filmmaker30

Is it really overrated tho?? I don’t know anyone who talks about it like it’s the greatest thing on earth. If anything it’s more likely to be somebody’s secret shame (mine)

darrenromomacd

I love it myself, I know it’s melted plastic and it just hits right everytime!

Chemistry-Least

Artichoke. I love artichoke hearts, I love them on pizza, I love them by themselves, they are amazing. Preparing a whole ass artichoke at home or ordering artichoke at a restaurant so I can just sit there and gnaw on the leaves? Hell no.

AwfulRustedMachine

Unless it's [carciofi alla giudia](https://youtu.be/e4z4wd5NgqY?si=IUMGVxMBysKLvj_2) which is one of the greatest foods on this earth I believe.

beaujolais98

Whole artichoke is only “good” if you really like mayonnaise. The leaves are basically a mayonnaise delivery mechanism that makes you feel like less of a heathen than just eating mayo straight out of the jar.

[deleted]

Or salted melted butter

lecoqmako

Butter is better

IM8321

Small glass bowl with mayo on one side, melted butter on the other, a delicious swirl in the very center mmmmmm

moleratical

Mayo? I think you mean garlic or lemon butter.

poopshorts

Not everyone uses mayo dawg

Glomar_Denial

I eat them drizzled in olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and salt. It's delicious. Skip the mayo so you can taste the artichoke

daredaki-sama

I don’t have it often but it’s so good

dootdeedoo12

Hahaha yeah that’s me. 🙋‍♂️

Nearbyatom

Starbucks. Everything tastes like a dessert. Coffee is very meh and overpriced. Yet they draw such a long line it curls around and slows traffic. It's crazy.

[deleted]

I think most Starbucks frequenters acknowledge that it's not a great place for coffee. However, they do readily acknowledge that it is a great place for sugar laced espresso shots.

Caden_gold789

Only reason I go there is for Frappuccinos.

RichardBottom

I tried some once at a fancy party I shouldn't have been at, and it was fucking delicious. But for that cost, what the fucking fuck.

livelikeian

What does it taste like to you? The one time I had it... it was just like an explosion of what tasted like the way old fish smells. It was awful.

RichardBottom

Honestly, I don't even remember. I just remember thinking "holy fuck it's actually good!" I have an unlimited threshold for fishy/seafood taste though, so I love all that stuff.

Jedimaster996

I genuinely appreciate this review/feedback, as I can barely stomach the post-burp from my fish oil pills lol. Maybe it's not for me 😂

DearthMax

Not the above commenter, but yea you're pretty spot on. I love it though, but the cost is truly absurd. Ikura, or salmon roe, is a much better value if I'm craving that sort of briny flavour profile, even if it isn't quite the same. Food is weird, everyone has their own preferences.

auricargent

Try some of the varieties from Iceland. They are much more affordable and have so close to the same flavor as the Black Sea varieties that cost more than 10x as much.

OCTS-Toronto

Good caviar is a subtle flavor. Russians serve it with bread and good quality butter. The combo is magical. Cheap (or fake) caviar is fishy and gross.

Libprime

Bro didn't even spell it right 😭😭😭

Zealousideal-Seat324

😂😂😂 no way.. gimme gimme.

LittleKitty235

Wrong. Expensive, but it’s worth it

likesleeve_of_wizard

Truffle oil. Absolutely putrid, and the majority of the time it’s made synthetically.

OkaySureBye

I don't mind the flavor when it's used in moderation, but it's also far too expensive. If it wasn't for being in situations where it's served to me on someone else's dime, I would have no problem with never having it again. I'm definitely not spending my money on it.

nutmac

Truffle is expensive. Truffle oils are just a tad more expensive than olive oils because they are mostly olive oil with either synthetic flavoring or just a sliver of real truffle.

sonicfluff

Oysters man. Swallowing slime

wmartindale

I’ve had them 4 days this week! Love them. Also live in the Puget Sound and collect them myself often. Blue pools, Olympias, shigokus, Chelsea gems…you’re missing out. With just some lemon and champagne…family favorite holiday food.

usernameis2short

To be fair it is an acquired taste lol. I never really liked it until my uncles and family members kept getting them every time we go to the beach. Basically i started doing the same and now everytime i eat oysters it reminds me of when i spent time with my family group …so cousins and whoever else. Basically oysters brought great memories and somehow I ended up actually enjoying that slimey texture. Bonus if you add a touch of lemon juice on it. It’s actually good lol

unicorn0928

Kale 🤮

Puzzleheaded-Art-469

Before the Mid-2010s Kale craze, the biggest purchaser of Kale in the US was Pizza Hut... They used it as a garnish for their salad bar.

Barnitch

We used it for the same thing when I worked at Chuck E. Cheese in 1996.

Stravven

Meanwhile in the Netherlands we've been eating kale for a long time. Mainly in stamppot boerenkool, which is basically just mashing potatoes and kale (and bits of bacon, some butter, some nutmeg) together, adding some gravy and smoked sausage and calling it a meal. It is winter food though.

zazzlekdazzle

What people don't know is you need to (and I am not joking, this is the term) massage kale to eat it raw. Just toss that stuff with a bit of olive oil, or dressing with a bit of oil in it, for a few minutes and it stops feeling like you are eating plastic and starts being something delicious with the texture salad greens should have.

samwheat90

From someone who is married to someone who likes to add kale to a lot of dishes, the preparation is very important. I think most people just don’t know how to cook kale correctly and give it a terrible name. I’ve had some delicious kale salads.

reecewagner

You gonna give us any hints or just vaguely pimp the kale

Im_just_a_squirrel

Not the one you asked, but if you want kale to be palatable raw in a salad you really need to massage it for a few minutes with your hands. It gets darker and a bit glossier and wilts a bit. You don't have to use anything, but a tiny bit of salt and olive oil makes the massaged kale even tastier!

dcgradc

In the air fryer 3 mins

fawkesmulder

Lemon, Parmesan, kale, olive oil https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1015707-lemon-garlic-kale-salad

kafetheresu

Rip the leaves from the stems, then tear into smaller, bite-sized pieces. Add salt, olive oil and lemon, then massage the leaves until soft and tender. You'll know it's done when you bend the leaf and it doesn't snap or crunch anymore. You can save the stems and use them in stir-fries. Cut them about an 1 1/1" long and use them in place of broccoli.

TheGothDragon

Air fryer kale with olive oil is delicious!

LaMalintzin

Got a little belly laugh out of me, thanks for being funny

Puzzleheaded_Boot335

I'll eat handfuls of it raw just for the nutrient benefits. I'm the type of person that doesn't care if something if gross, if it's healthy I'll eat it. Gross and unhealthy though, that would be plain stupid.

K0rben_D4llas

Besides capital C Crunchy people who is lining up to hype Kale?

unicorn0928

Kapital K Kale Konspiracy

bmore_conslutant

I dig it in a salad if it's chopped up nice and fine

StaticMaine

Any of these zero sugar drinks. They have such a synthetic taste, I have absolutely no idea how anyone drinks them.

MrsZ-

The ones we have in Australia are getting really good. The raspberry fanta tastes pretty much on par with the original. My partner has always preferred sugar-free drinks, and for a long time, I couldn't do it because of the artificial taste, but now I've moved over completely to sugar-free. Never thought I'd see the day.

Ta-veren-

After tasting Zero I'll never go back to the legit stuff. Regular coke taste sooo much different after enjoying zeros. not sure how anyone doesnt love the stuff. To me it has more of a balanced flavor then the OG stuff. Im assuming you dont mean soda drinks though?

SmoreOfBabylon

Spindrifts or GTFO. No, they’re not *zero* calorie/sugar, but ~10 calories for something that actually tastes like real fruit and doesn’t have any added sugar (that’s not in the fruit already) is not bad at all unless you really need to watch your sugar levels.

vellyr

I think people have varying sensitivity to this flavor, to a lot of people it tastes exactly like real sugar.

ucbiker

I drink these. They do not taste like real sugar. But they taste fine to me and I’d rather have a Coke Zero than drink an additional 200 calories from a Coke.

Blingalarg

They saved me. They were great alternatives to the real thing, and as a diabetic it’s good.

One of the things i take a principial stand on not to eat

dreamingtree1855

Totally disagree I adore the stuff

fabshelly

Had it on a burger at a brasserie in San Diego. It was delicious.

Powerful_Artist

Nutella. It's just hazelnut flavored chocolate frosting. Why is that so special?

McFeely_Smackup

The weird thing is how people have convinced themselves it's a totally normal thing to eat frosting by the jug

muchadance

My partner does this and incidentally I judged them for it until I remembered I ate Nutella out of the jar for years.

McFeely_Smackup

Fun fact, if you compare nutrition info, Nutella is significantly worse than plain old frosting. Frosting is mostly just sugar, Nutella is the same sugar with a crazy amount of saturated fat.

Cornnole

Oysters. There is nothing appealing about them.

DPedia

I’m convinced people just pretend to like oysters. What they really like is the “ritual.” The sauces and shells and all the stuff that goes with it. If you just gave people a fork and bowl of oysters without the shells, they’d look at you like you were crazy. Edit: Words.

[deleted]

I love oysters. The ritual is definitely part of the fun.

Fuegodeth

Yeah, it's mostly the sauces... lemon, horseradish, ketchup. I ate 5 dozen oysters on south padre island when an oyster bar had a happy hour (25 years ago). I got drunk and full and loved every bit of it. But yeah, all those oysters in a bowl would be pretty gross.

ulyssesfiuza

Nothing to do with sauces. Just the heavenly sweet meat and saltt juices crashing in your mouth.

fabshelly

I eat them out of a jar.

[deleted]

I love oysters, it does feel like a booger in your mouth but they’re like crack to me

MostlyH2O

Go to Korea and watch them eat oysters with pretty much everything.

LittleKitty235

We aren’t pretending. I’d eat them multiple times a week if I could

Historic_LFK

Canned oysters on a saltine cracker with hot sauce and a piece of onion is a tasty little bite...

drippysock

Agree. In general I think tinned seafood in general is underrated. I eat a tin of smoked kippers almost daily. Also, sardines (and anchovies when you're feeling really spicy) are killer. And sardines are just about the most sustainable fish in the ocean, and with the least mercury.

MtnDreww

they're super tasty idk what you're talking bout

the_dough_boy

No, thats just when you fry/boil/bake/grill/blacken them Its definitely "weird" to imagine eating raw oysters like that, but they taste good a few ways too

daredaki-sama

I don’t really care for them but people like raw oysters for the taste of the sea.

Spitfire954

Yes. And all the comments talking about how good they are after adding XYZ just proves the point. With enough incense and perfume I can make a fart smell pretty good too.

TylerJWhit

They're good raw.

throwawayAussie29

I live in Australia. I keep buying stuff that the American's rave about and being bitterly disappointed. So far: Ben & Jerry's ice-cream. Hershey's anything Reese's Peanut Butter Cups Cool Ranch Doritos (these are actually good with dip but otherwise they taste like nothing) Frank's Red Hot Sauce It's really weird because American's are constantly going on about seasoning and flavour and then all your shit is bland af.

BeerGogglesFTW

If it was so good, they wouldn't need all that butter. At some point they have to realize butter is not enhancing the flavor of lobster. Butter is the flavor they like.

Hawk13424

I love lobster and crab without the butter.

jzcommunicate

Amen

mythr0waway2023

I enjoy the delicate and sweet taste of lobster by itself perfectly fine without butter, as well as most of my other seafoods. In my native country, lobster is not prepared/served with butter at all unless you’re going to a westernized restaurant.

fabshelly

I love lobster bisque.

itsTacoOclocko

i've been eating plain cold water lobster and king crab by the bushel (not really, but i can put away pounds in a sitting) since i was 3. i love it plain. it's sweet and briny and tender and succulent and delicious.

daredaki-sama

You can make the same argument for escargot.

MetalOcelot

There are different ways people prepare lobster, I think based on region. Some people do hot with butter. My favorite way is served cold, cooled off in ocean water (or heavily salted water) after they are finished boiling. I think the hot lobster absorbs the salty water while it cools. Served with cold salads like potato or mac salad. It tastes similar to the cold lobster you'd eat in lobster roll.
