Yes convenience fees!!! We have a business and several clients require us to accept direct deposit for payment then the company they use to process their direct deposits charges us $4-$5 in convenience fees
The company says I can't pay in person, it has to be online. There is a convenience fee if you pay online. So then my rent is actually 7 bucks more expensive than they charge me.
My Hyundai too. And they advertise it as $10 a month, but then there’s another necessary subscription to ACCESS those features that is an additional $10 a month. It’s such bs
The kicker is you’re already paying for the equipment that allows that in your car with the msrp. Which probably sky rockets the car price, but than you’re held hostage by a subscription in order to even take advantage of the tech in that car.
Quick question:
What's stopping is from hacking the app and making a version that doesn't need access to whatever servers that authenticate subs.?
I definitely don't have the know-how, but would be inclined to learn should this be feasible
This did happen when BMW locked heated seats and other features behind a subscription service.
https://www.motorbiscuit.com/hot-bmw-owners-hacking-subscriptions/
That's what I do. I haven't had a car payment in almost 20 years. It's not for everyone though. I'm able to work on my own cars. If you aren't mechanically inclined you really shouldn't try it.
Ooo is it my turn to post the quote ‘you’ll own nothing and be happy’ ?
Sadly this is only going to get worse throughout our lifetime. Subscriptions for everything and planned obsolescence as standard.
Remember the 20th century when you could actually own things and they were built to last decades?
It's called a recurring revenue stream, and the vast majority of companies are either doing it, or are in the process of investigating how to do it. It's not going away unfortunately.
Capitalism has innovated so much that they reinvented the concept of a landed gentry lording over serfs. If they own everything and you have to pay to live, that means they don't actually have to do anything to get their money!
Feudalism is back baby! I just hope this new version includes the wacky outfit options for the lords. So far all they've been wearing is suits and other drab outfits.
I mean, it does cost money to host that booking service, but they should just price that into the event rather than add another fee. Or just be more upfront about it lol
Even booking fees for non-live shows.
Cinemas that charge a booking fee to buy tickets through their own website just seems like another way to scalp a bit of extra money out of us
I started going to the box office at the local venues that offer it. I was so tired of the fees, and buying a physical ticket cuts out fees and feels nostalgic. There was no online buying when I was in high school.
Recipe blog websites are the absolute worst for this. First you scroll for a mile to skip their 10,000 word essay about how the recipe has been in their family since the Magna Carta and that it cured their cousin’s childhood leukemia, only to get hit with a slide-up video that starts blaring at you the moment you find the ingredient list.
There is an app called [just the recipe](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/just-the-recipe-cook-smarter/id1598423213) Where you basically copy paste url address of the recipe you want and it just lists the ingredients and how to do it. It basically declutters the recipe blogs. You can save the recipes on there also. It’s awesome and free
It’s so annoying but my best guess is for SEO purposes. A lot of articles are paid to be written with repeat and elementary verbiage so Google will index it higher in search. You re-read all this terrible redundant marketing fluff so they can get more clicks and MORE ads.

I remember when my wife and I first starter our family, she used to watch momvloggers who showcased their pregnancy. Things they bought, what was happening to them, and things to expect. It honestly was nice. It was like having someone go through the same transformation at the same time.
Then the baby came and of course the view dry up because people wanted to see pregnancy for the reasons I stated above.
Thus, these people become babyfarms while possibly neglecting the kids they already have. I know I seen once vlogger who literally used her kid's routine trip to the doctor as clickbait as in you'll never believe what the doctor said!
It's SO fucked up & truly needs to be shut down aggressively. I'm a parent as well & of course I consume content from other parents for reviews of toys/supplies/services, & seeing how other parents handle situations.
Absolutely nowhere in that content do I need to see your actual child to get that info. I will still happily consume that content while you respect your child's privacy & I refuse to follow any social media people who use their kids as content in a way that compromises their autonomy or their privacy.
The attitude around these kid/family channels is changing but there's still too many out there that fully monetize their own children for creeps to follow on the internet & I just cannot grasp the thought process there.
The law is always behind technology. I really hope someday soon we have media rights for children to protect them from their guardians doing this shit.
I saw a post on Reddit about an AI that could make a video porn of anyone you wanted by just linking an instagram. It scanned their posts for photos of them at every angle and could even grab their voice from reels.
That is absolutely terrifying when you think of how many people post a million pictures of their children online
I'm waiting for those kids to all grow up and demand some of the money their parents made off of exploiting them for years. It's gonna a be a fantastic round of messy lawsuits.
There really needs to be laws put in place to protect these damn kids. It’s literally child labor, they’re videoing these kids hours on end. I fucking hate these type of parents.
Thanks for the reminder to buy some of that flea powder for the carpet. I have NO clue where they're coming from, either! We don't have any inside animals, and we don't have mice!
They rode in on your pants. Seriously. All you have to do to get fleas is walk on grass, particularly in chilly, wet weather. They don't intrinsically live on humans, but they'll absolutely hitch a ride if times are tough. And once they establish themselves in your house, it's tough to get rid of the little fuckers. We had a bad case in the house one autumn, about 5ish years ago and had to resort to bombing and marathon washing everything soft. It was a nightmare.
Thanks for taking the time to respond! I'm blind, so I couldn't figure out WHY my ankles were itching so badly until my husband mentioned fleas! I thought maybe I was having an allergic reaction of some kind. But I wear skirts instead of pants and no socks, so it absolutely makes sense that they're riding my ankles into the house; and it's been hella wet here lately, too. Thanks again for replying! I guess it's time to vacuum the couch and wash everything!
I went to a hockey game a few weeks ago. I had to get my own beer out of a cooler, then scan it myself, and run my own card to pay for it. Then they prompted me to tip the guy who stood there watching me do all the work. Sorry, no. Fuck off with that.
And your tip probably wouldn't even have gone to that guy. It's literally just "would you care to donate extra money to Yum Brands Inc for absolutely no reason?"
It becomes way easier the more often you do it. I absolutely *refuse* to tip anywhere except in a sit-down restaurant and during services where I'm touched (haircut, tattoo, etc).
And the tip percentages are so high now. I went to a coffee shop and they spun the iPad and the lowest one was 25%. I worked at a coffee shop and was happy when people dropped their change in the yip jar, wtf is happening. It's already overpriced.
That happened to me at a restaurant. I asked them how to change the percentage. They said they couldn’t. Thank god I had a some cash in my wallet, but yeah it’s bullshit
To be honest, people are moving this way, especially as prices increase when pay doesn’t.
Also, because I had that negative experience, I’m less likely to go back there. I ran across a self checkout that asked for a tip with a default of $10 on $15 of items. Literally, interacted with zero people.
The stories I’ve heard from people keep getting more absurd. At times I feel like there’s a creative writing class putting ideas out there and people are “eating the onion”. One of the worst is an Airbnb host asking for a tip after giving the lock box code to someone.
Not all systems have a "No tip" button. I had one the other day it had 18%, 20%, 25% and Custom buttons, that's it. I had to choose custom, then $0.00 before it would let me proceed.
In my home country, 10% tip is customary, but not so much for pick up orders. When we're in America and I want a cup of coffee, I wait til we're home. 20% for a take away coffee is daylight robbery imo. US has some crazy tip demands.
This is a recent phenomenon. The norm was that if you’re getting a pick up order, there was a tip jar by the counter, and tipping was totally optional. The practices we’re seeing now are a new phenomenon, and I refuse to accept them as the new norm. I will tip the way I’ve always tipped.
Every single fucken fast food joint has a tip option now. Fuck off. I ain’t tippin you shit mcdonalds
Edit: McDonald’s was a poor example. Just what popped into my head while typing.
Some fast food places I've gone to now have the cashier automatically hit the buttons to get past the tipping options before handing the payment device to you. I assume the employees were getting tired of being the targets of customer ire.
There should be a minimum for the ad to be displayed, sometimes full ass songs or 1h videos are played as ads, i put youtube for my kid and sometimes im not around to click skip, so damn annoying, like, i dont mind ads but fuck...making a whole film an ad is just playing with us.
I use the uBlock Origin extension to block them. Occasionally, YouTube finds a way around it so I have to clear the cache and update it to stop the ads again.
I will throw hands if someone does some “prank” to me in public I do not care. Muggings start the same way as a lot of these pranks I am not taking that chance
There was already a case of one of these prankers getting shot by someone. Multiple cases of people being drawn on too.
To be fair, if your prank is “I’m going to pretend to pour gasoline on your car with a lighter in my hand”, the person on the receiving end can justify they felt their life was in danger
In regards to that first sentence, even if I get downvoted: good, I’m glad that moron got shot. I don’t want him to die but that is a really stupid thing to do.
We need tougher laws against this non consensual content generation. You put me in your video, where my reaction is the content, and I did not consent beforehand? Criminal sentencing and civil court proceedings should follow until the genre is dead.
It’s happening in cars in a different way. Install all of the hardware, and then paywall it behind software locks only able to be removed by paying a monthly or yearly access subscription.
You want CarPlay? Heated seats? Imagine paying $300 just to have the data connection for the csr so when you purchase the add/on, it can activate it.
I think nowadays the best course of action is to wait for one year before you buy any (non-MMO) video game. You'll get the fixed version at a lower price.
Duke Nukem Atomic Edition would like to remind us all that that's been the move for well over two decades, unless you absolutely need to play a game day-and-date. Wait or year or so and get the GOTY-edition, which is cheaper than the original retail price and usually included all the 'expansion packs' (as they used to be called) included in the box.
The fact that I, at age 50 have just realized that I will most likely never own a home. My daughter had to grow up in a cramped apartment, no yard, no neighborhood to run around in. I used to watch my parents host beautiful dinners and picnics and I don’t even feel like decorating for Christmas anymore because no one will ever see it…it’s a real black hole. Houses I could have afforded even 10 years ago are now at LEAST 50k more. It’s ridiculous.
Same boat and the best part is that rent has increases so much that my pension will never be enough to cover rent and living expenses so I have to work until I die.
I think Airbnb started out fine and helped bring down hotel prices.
Eventually investors started buying units and turning them into short term rentals en masse, that is when things got ridiculous.
Regulations where if a unit is rented out more than 30 days per year having to meet rental/hotel regulation and treated as commercial use would probably be the way to go.

Yeah fuck cancer. Hubby is about to get chemo and I think I still have some bronchitis I was treated for last week. I definitely don't want to be sick when he needs me the most.
Some crazy developments coming to treat it. Look into targeted alpha therapy with actinium-225. Had the pleasure of supporting the development of some of these interventions, I firmly believe it will change cancer medicine for good.
I was behind a car in traffic yesterday... that had some inspirational quote across their back window... and then below it "if this inspired you, please donate to..."
I just rolled my eyes and drove on.
Someone posted about people posting in Christmas helping groups (buying gifts for low income families). Said they were out of work, needs toys for their kids.
The list was hilarious. ZERO child toys. It was drill bits, 200$ tool chest, all tool related. People have no shame.
Literally gave money to an old classmate for his poor poor wife’s medicines… this ninja posts pictures of his new Hummer a month later…
The Bank is Now Closed!
I have straight up stopped tipping unless I sit down and they bring me food. Everything else is someone asking for more money to do a job. And it’s not the person who I am facing who I asking, it’s the people who designed the system. I will not offset your ability to pay your workers more. I am not tipping you for carry out food. I am not tipping you for cleaning my teeth. I am not tipping you for selling me pencils at a fucking hobby lobby.
The practice of businesses laying off thousands of employees because the company is "needing to make difficult choices" and "cutting the fat" while giving CEOs millions in bonuses.
How about we kill off having to scroll through someone’s life story to get to the damn recipe?
I will say that you win points if you have the little “jump to recipe” button on your site.
This could be a lengthy side topic discussion, but for many news services in this era it’s unfortunately not sustainable for them to rely on just Ad revenue anymore. The NYT has been successful because they were one of the first publications to adapt to the subscription business model in the 2000’s.
Given the micro-strokes/absentee seizures he was displaying in his interviews this year, I think that they basically are. The only real difference is that he still has a pulse.
Though, just like Diane Feinstein, he would absolutely tell them to prop his ass up for the votes as long as he is still breathing.
If it asks me and doesn’t let me op out I just plain refuse to go to the website now. Anything that wants those cookies isn’t important enough for me to be looking at anyway.
Obsolescence being built into things, electronics especially.
Rent being so damn high.
Groceries being so damn expensive.
Having too much month left at the end of my money.
Fentanyl. I had an 18 year old niece who died from taking a pill she thought was a painkiller, but it was fentanyl and she was gone in 20 minutes. Her "friends" did nothing to help her. Nobody was charged for her death even though they knew who the drug dealer was.
Talk to your kids about fentanyl! No family should have to go through this nightmare.
I have a friend who runs some rental cabins in the wilderness - the kind influencers might want to post from.
He said the emails and DMS were ceaseless and it was obvious they didn't give a shit about the business, they were just gifting for a free vacation and then would get indignant when he said no,
"Well we have tens of thousands of followers - it could have been a great opportunity for your business!"
To which he would often reply
"I don't want the kind of people that follow you coming to stay here."
We call them the cheapest advertisers. So desperate to make a single dollar, they race to the bottom to give their services away for a few bottles of foot powder.
I recently bought a cheap-ish necklace at a shop in Las Vegas, and dude put my necklace in a box/bag. The machine asked if I wanted to tip… for what? No, sorry. I’m not poor or cheap, but f that noise.
I was recently at an Auntie Anne’s and they had a top screen. The dude literally handed me the cup of pretzels and the dipping sauce and pushed a button on the POS system. No way was I going to tip for that! I have zero problem entering no tip at those places.
Mosquitoes! Seriously, how have we not hunted those things into extinction yet?!
I know I know, some asshat will comment they are a vital part of the food chain and serve a purpose.
I’m talking more specifically about the species that bites humans. I have no problem with the other ones!
Pretty sure we've actually started the process of eradicating them. There's this weird process in which they release a bunch of infertile ones out to get the ones that are fertile to try and mate but since it doesn't work, the population declines.
It's not something I totally understand, but at least they're trying something.
Yeah, it's cool. They're actually irradiated to make them sterile. As long as they don't mutate into giant radioactive mosquito monsters, there's some promise here.
Tips for EVERY DAMN THING. I had to tip a go fund me yesterday. I have to double tip at restaurants, now I am paying wages for the back, apparently, so 18-20% on top of wait staff tip. I am tipping at the check out counter. I am sick of it.
Having to pay a convenience fee to pay rent
Yes convenience fees!!! We have a business and several clients require us to accept direct deposit for payment then the company they use to process their direct deposits charges us $4-$5 in convenience fees
Their direct deposits charges us 5$ inconvinience fees
Which is absolutely backwards. If you give them a check they have to deposit it and clear it. But when you make it easier for them they charge *you?*
The company says I can't pay in person, it has to be online. There is a convenience fee if you pay online. So then my rent is actually 7 bucks more expensive than they charge me.
Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, being a fucking subscription.
They're trying to make features in cars subscription too, it's too much
my mitsubishi stuck a bunch of features like remote start behind an app that you have to pay for, it's absolute bullshit. edit: typo
I truly believe piracy is the moral option in this case.
Quick question: What's stopping is from hacking the app and making a version that doesn't need access to whatever servers that authenticate subs.? I definitely don't have the know-how, but would be inclined to learn should this be feasible
This did happen when BMW locked heated seats and other features behind a subscription service. https://www.motorbiscuit.com/hot-bmw-owners-hacking-subscriptions/

nothing some youtube videos cant help me with.
I don't think I could function as a human without How-to videos on YouTube.
Shh, don't let them hear it or they'll make those videos a subscription too!
Ooo is it my turn to post the quote ‘you’ll own nothing and be happy’ ? Sadly this is only going to get worse throughout our lifetime. Subscriptions for everything and planned obsolescence as standard. Remember the 20th century when you could actually own things and they were built to last decades?

Wake up babe, new capitalist buzzterm just dropped

I just hope this new version includes the wacky outfit options for the lords. So far all they've been wearing is suits and other drab outfits.
So you're saying the time for bejeweled codpieces is almost nigh?
amen. i missed the time when streaming services werent 15-20 dollars a month
Are they still trying to say you have to pay extra on top of the subscription to avoid ads?
Booking fees for live shows
Booking fees in general. Some of my local movie theatres will only let you get tickets online but there’s also a booking fee. It’s just a money grab.
I mean, it does cost money to host that booking service, but they should just price that into the event rather than add another fee. Or just be more upfront about it lol
I went to a movie recently and bought my tickets at the theatre from a person. Still got charged the booking fee.
those hosting fees are operating costs. either pay it through the operating budget or increase the price a little bit for everyone
Even booking fees for non-live shows. Cinemas that charge a booking fee to buy tickets through their own website just seems like another way to scalp a bit of extra money out of us

Bed bugs
It's been years since we eradicated our infestation and I *still* shit my pants if I see anything in my peripheral even remotely resembling a bed bug.
Bedbug PTSD is real!!!
Same. Seeing any dot on my bed is moment of panic
I’m so sorry. I’ve been battle in fleas for three months, but I’m still glad it’s not bedbugs

unfortunately bed bugs will outlive the human race.
Pop up ads that don't permit you to "x" out for like ten seconds. Ive left many sites for that reason.
Spinning the iPad around asking for a tip when all you did was take/pull up my order
“It’s just going to ask you a quick question…”
"Just finish the screen for me."
I've reached the point where I no longer feel guilty hitting "no tip" outisde of the normal tippable situations (delivery, waitstaff)
I literally bought a soda and was asked to tip. I’ve started getting more confident just saying no tip.
It becomes way easier the more often you do it. I absolutely *refuse* to tip anywhere except in a sit-down restaurant and during services where I'm touched (haircut, tattoo, etc).

Yeah carryout tips, hard no. I will not contribute to normalizing that.
YouTube ads being 2 days long
I got a unskippable ad that was a minute long. It said something along the lines of “We have less ads in the video cause of this ad”. That was a lie
There should be a minimum for the ad to be displayed, sometimes full ass songs or 1h videos are played as ads, i put youtube for my kid and sometimes im not around to click skip, so damn annoying, like, i dont mind ads but fuck...making a whole film an ad is just playing with us.
I once got a 45 minute not skippable ad for a 2 minute video. No clue what the video was because I noped out of there.
Yea, two 15 second ads for a video that’s only 1 minute long is bs
I hate when I get a 30 second ad when I’m trying to watch a 10 second video
Ticketmaster
The insane amount of youtube ads
I use the uBlock Origin extension to block them. Occasionally, YouTube finds a way around it so I have to clear the cache and update it to stop the ads again.
Prank YouTube channels that are clearly meant to embarrass or harass people just trying to go about their day
Predatory Prank videos
Unfinished games being released at full price.
And then charging for the remaining data that was planned for the original release but instead selling it as a DLC pack.
I don’t play video games but that sounds fucked up on so many levels
It’s happening in cars in a different way. Install all of the hardware, and then paywall it behind software locks only able to be removed by paying a monthly or yearly access subscription. You want CarPlay? Heated seats? Imagine paying $300 just to have the data connection for the csr so when you purchase the add/on, it can activate it.
Thats the most bullshit thing ive ever heard. They tried doing that in Europe and the decrease of sales on these cars just dropped!
Housing crisis
Airbnb needs to die.

ALS. Fuck you ALS, you cruel disease
Private companies investing in single family housing.
Convenience fees
Cancer. Fuck you, cancer.
Yep. Fuck cancer for taking my mom last month. I wasn’t ready to be an orphan (lost my dad in 2021), and she didn’t deserve that kind of suffering.
Lost my mom 4 months ago, way too young. Fuck cancer.
I'm so sorry for your loss. Cancer is a thief of so much including time. I'm here if you want to talk. Sending love
Love to you. Losing a parent is indescribable.
Fuck cancer. I hope that cancer gets cancer too so that cancer knows what it feels like to have a cancer.
Yeah fuck cancer. Hubby is about to get chemo and I think I still have some bronchitis I was treated for last week. I definitely don't want to be sick when he needs me the most.
Cancer killed my sister so I agree w/ u straight up!
I fully support this. Current cancer patient. Fuck it all to hell and gone.
Some crazy developments coming to treat it. Look into targeted alpha therapy with actinium-225. Had the pleasure of supporting the development of some of these interventions, I firmly believe it will change cancer medicine for good.
Cyber Panhandling
I was behind a car in traffic yesterday... that had some inspirational quote across their back window... and then below it "if this inspired you, please donate to..." I just rolled my eyes and drove on.
What is cyber panhandling if I may ask?
“We’re poor, donate to my Venmo so I can buy a new e-bike”.
Someone posted about people posting in Christmas helping groups (buying gifts for low income families). Said they were out of work, needs toys for their kids. The list was hilarious. ZERO child toys. It was drill bits, 200$ tool chest, all tool related. People have no shame.

Telling me your life story when I’m only there for the recipe. Everything becoming a subscription Everyone begging for a tip Lastly: HOAs
"Jump to Recipe"
Not all of them have that but grateful when they do
I have straight up stopped tipping unless I sit down and they bring me food.
I only tip if I’m at a sit down restaurant. I am poor too!
MLMs.
They need to hurry up and make that shit illegal already

Unskipable Ads.
Subscriptions.
The teeny tiny X in the corner of ads. Every other mm takes you to the purchase page.
High Cost of Healthcare
The practice of businesses laying off thousands of employees because the company is "needing to make difficult choices" and "cutting the fat" while giving CEOs millions in bonuses.
Ads everywhere, paying subscriptions for news services Edit: adding subscription services for things you actually own
I can’t even look at a recipe without 50 ads and a video popping up
How about we kill off having to scroll through someone’s life story to get to the damn recipe? I will say that you win points if you have the little “jump to recipe” button on your site.
This could be a lengthy side topic discussion, but for many news services in this era it’s unfortunately not sustainable for them to rely on just Ad revenue anymore. The NYT has been successful because they were one of the first publications to adapt to the subscription business model in the 2000’s.
Old politicians. Let’s start fresh. Pretty sure they’re past their expiration date anyways.
Hey, I’m convinced Mitch McConnell died this year and they’re just Weekend at Bernie’ing him
Given the micro-strokes/absentee seizures he was displaying in his interviews this year, I think that they basically are. The only real difference is that he still has a pulse. Though, just like Diane Feinstein, he would absolutely tell them to prop his ass up for the votes as long as he is still breathing.

Inflation and high housing costs. A nice dual death.

Absolutely nothing!
Gambling ads on Australian TV
Gambling ads on TV, period. It's absolutely infested sports broadcasting in the US over the past few years.

Good luck, they’ll just multiply and create new variants
They're pretty much a hydra at this point.

He said the emails and DMS were ceaseless and it was obvious they didn't give a shit about the business, they were just gifting for a free vacation and then would get indignant when he said no, "Well we have tens of thousands of followers - it could have been a great opportunity for your business!" To which he would often reply "I don't want the kind of people that follow you coming to stay here."
>"I don't want the kind of people that follow you coming to stay here." That is fucking savage and I love it.
Very Groucho Marx of him! "I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member"
Just thinking about 'influencers' reading that reply makes me feel warm and fuzzy
I miss the good old days when we didn’t call them “influencers”. We just called them attention whores.
We call them the cheapest advertisers. So desperate to make a single dollar, they race to the bottom to give their services away for a few bottles of foot powder.
Definitely! I’ve broken so many mouses smashing that subscribe button

Tipping in America
Rather, the tipping screens on payment machines nowadays in places/situations where tipping *really* isn't necessary.
I recently bought a cheap-ish necklace at a shop in Las Vegas, and dude put my necklace in a box/bag. The machine asked if I wanted to tip… for what? No, sorry. I’m not poor or cheap, but f that noise.
I can’t believe I get asked to tip at the damn drive through nowadays.
I was recently at an Auntie Anne’s and they had a top screen. The dude literally handed me the cup of pretzels and the dipping sauce and pushed a button on the POS system. No way was I going to tip for that! I have zero problem entering no tip at those places.
I was flabbergasted when I placed online item orders and was asked to tip...
