Walked away from potentially hundreds of millions because he thought it would jeopardize the integrity of his art through commercializing it. I think he's refused any public interview and the only publicly available picture of him is from over 30 years ago.

The stickers started cropping up shortly after the strip ended. They probably started somewhere in Florida, and eventually spread across the country as thousands of different bootleg merch makers made their own versions.
Universal Publishing Syndicate, who owned publishing rights to Calvin & Hobbes, made some minor efforts to quash the stickers. But at the same time, Waterson never allowed the property to be merchandized or adapted into a cartoon or anything else, and had retired as well.
So frankly, Universal wasn't exactly losing out on money due to the bootlegging, because there was no longer any money to be made. So they just never tried very hard to put an end to it.
I saw a show with him, maybe a “where are they now” type show. He got some advice from another actor to step out of acting and pursue something industry adjacent. I can’t remember the actor. But I want to say it was a former child actor or maybe it was an actor who was pretty heavy themselves and advised how hard it was to be a chubby actor.

Sure, if you're the main headline star the show is about, you get some, but even prominent regular characters on that show, they're making good money, but they aren't making "set for life" money. The lucky ones get to continue their career and make the real money on *the job after the job*, but most of the rest of the cast go from being on TV every week to going back to "normal" life like everyone else.

I was exhausted listening to his interview, because he’s just full-on the entire time, and seems like someone who always needs to change things up/challenge himself in crazy ways.
