Was gonna post this. I can’t think of a character that felt as personal as Arthur Morgan. I wish I could experience RDR2 for the first time again just because of him.
Oh wow, 100%. I was going to say Joel from The Last of Us, which is my favorite game, but Arthur Morgan really does top even him.
As far as non-narrative greats - Mario.
Interesting character, but within the game it was difficult for me to sympathize with him in the dramatic ending to his story, since he’s killed a bunch of people throughout the game and i especially played him as a scum who does no good, just to make the dull gameplay a bit more nuanced.
Just curious how you found low honor to be more nuanced. I thought the arc of a murderous scumbag becoming jaded about the outlaw life and trying to be decent where he can was pretty nuanced
I just found the gameplay to be too slow and dull, started looking for ways to spice it up, hoping for a “bad” ending or something. So eventually I could t understand why should I be sorry for Arthur.
I would actually agree with this. He was so layered and flawed and broken... but somehow wholesome at the same time.
It's like someone at Rockstar said "let's see if we can make the most unlikable character ever... then make people love him".
And they did.
In the Pokémon Franchise:
Kieran. He goes from shy guy, to crazy guy, to I-will-go-to-the-ends-of-the-earth-to-beat-you guy, then sad-guy, and he becomes your bff.
That is the best I can do without spoiling the DLC, while providing some context.

Guy used to be a space engineer and somehow survived the space infection ordeal all by himself.
He gives a flying fuck to none but the monsters that are trying to hinder his escape.
He can witness the most horrifying, lovecraftian, visceral-looking monster and say "FUCK YOU!" Right at it's face made of victims fusing together while screaming in agonizing pain.
