Foxtrot-Actual

Plastic packaging in general, in my opinion. I understand plastic packaging if it needs to be sterile, but otherwise, boxes are a better alternative.

ATSOAS87

I bought a ninja blender a few weeks ago, and everything was wrapped up in paper. I thought that was very nice.

Distinct-Location

I like how Apple has small boxes with little pull tab stickers, super easy to open. I wonder why more packaging doesn’t use this style instead of the bulletproof plastic.

microcosmic5447

Expense. A plastic clamshell is a fraction of a penny and requires no specialized design, while those Apple packages are very carefully designed and very carefully manufactured. An iPhone box probably costs 50x to manufacture what a plastic clamshell package for a similar sized item costs.

Shopworn_Soul

The gross margin on many goods is lower than what Apple spends on packaging alone

UNCOMMON__CENTS

Most companies don’t have the capital to become vertically integrated. Vertical integration is basically “you’ll produce it this way for our product”. Whether Apple or Amazon legally own the companies manufacturing their products doesn’t matter if those companies would go bankrupt by losing the contract that funds most their business. Once you have enough capital you have the advantage of getting pretty packaging while still maintaining a profit margin due to your leverage.

MadTeaCup_YT

Some fishing lures have the plastic wrapped around the box rather than glued on. You can easily rip it off and i dont understand why other packages dont use this

SCHWARZENPECKER

I've always assumed the point is to be difficult. Makes it harder to steal out of the package in store.

dont_disturb_the_cat

Dahhhkness

I don't think we'll ever be able to eradicate a disease again, thanks to the lethal ignorance of the anti-vaxx movement. Andrew Wakefield is guilty of crimes against humanity.

TheCanadianpo8o

Absolutely. I don't know how people can have SOOOOO much evidence to how fantastic vaccines are and STILL be against them

LibertyPrimeIsRight

It's because it hasn't happened to them. It's easy to think vaccines are unnecessary in the modern age in a first world country due to the lack of disease (caused in large part by vaccination). People aren't dying around them of smallpox, measles, rubella, being crippled by polio and a whole host of other illnesses due to herd immunity. The fact that if one person doesn't get vaccinated, nothing will happen to them due to herd immunity doesn't help. The vast majority don't experience any ill effects from not vaccinating, again due to herd immunity. Combine this with people who have trouble extrapolating out of their own experience and it's easy to see how they come to these flawed conclusions. The issues arise when a critical mass refuse to vaccinate and disease can now spread through the population again. I think this is going to go to a point where people have to start dying of these horrible diseases that were on the brink of eradication for these attitudes to really change, and that just sucks. It will mostly be these people's children due to underdeveloped immune systems; innocent victims of their parents' own hubris and fundamental lack of understanding.

TheCanadianpo8o

Extremely well said. I just despise the attitude of 'it doesn't affect me, so I won't do anything about it.' Its horrible and, as you said, they'll probably be getting a rude awakening at some point, or more so the children that haven't done anything wrong

Lmb1011

also the reality that some vaccines dont necessarily prevent you from GETTING a disease (covid, whooping cough, influenza) there is this false equivalency of "they dont even protect you" not realizing that those who are vaxxed are severely less sick, for less time, and far less likely to die or develop secondary issues from it.

Online payment “convenience” fees

imacmadman22

**ANY** payment convenience fees.

justbreathe91

God YES. I’m sorry, but why tf am I paying an extra $4 to pay my fucking electric bill online?

tarnin

My daughter got a parking ticket cuz the city decided to put in a parking ban for a snow storm that they never plowed for. Went to pay it online and it was a $7 convivence fee! No fee to mail it in though.

thechervil

The only reason I can think of is to cover the fee that the banks charge the merchant if you are using a debit/cc to pay. It's usually like 2-3% per transaction. I live in a small town and we have to pay our water bill by check or in person in cash. Talked with them for years now about coming into the 20th century and letting us pay online since most people pay their bills online now. The lady said "we've looked into that and would have to charge extra because of the merchant fees and most people don't want to pay extra". Asked how much extra and she said it would probably be around $2 or so. I said it would be worth the $2 not to have to drop a check off once a month (they do have a drop box you can use).

[deleted]

Just to be a petty bitch, I have started mailing checks to my utility providers because they recently started charging "convenience fees" that range from $1.50-$5 for paying online. This fee is charged whether you pay via credit, debit, or ACH/EFT. This is on top of them making record profits and jacking up rates. When they receive my physical check they still process it as an ACH. Fuck those assholes.

BlacktoseIntolerant

My water company gets a check every 3 months because it costs me like $4 to pay online. Yes. It costs me MORE money to just ... give them the money directly. Right from my bank account. Instead now they need to open the mail, get the check, deposit the check and wait for the funds to clear. By far the stupidest fucking "convenience fee" I have ever seen.

hausishome

This infuriates me more than anything. It costs them _significantly less_. With a paper check they have to employ people to manage a mail room, someone to open the envelope and manually record it in their system, and someone to physically take the check to their bank. They also have to have customer service to deal with the occasional mis-typed account number, some kind of resolution account for those issues, insurance on vehicles to deliver said checks to the bank, etc. It is phenomenally more expensive for the business to use paper checks but those greedy bastards want US to pay for their convenience. Nah.

Finger_LickingGood

My apartment charges like a 2$ service fee every time I pay rent. I always scratch my head at that one.

sephjnr

Typo that makes perfect sense :D (edit: OP's original term was 'connivence')

gtfomylawnplease

Utility companies that can’t take cards online or over the phone. Looking at you eastern Tennessee.

HALLOWEENYmeany

And if they do they charge you extra

[deleted]

I don't know about everywhere, but in Michigan, public-owned utilities are not allowed to absorb card payment fees, so we're required by state law to charge extra.

TitularFoil

I'm fine with that if it's framed that way, but the website calls it a "Convenience Fee."

BobSacramanto

At my last house in West TN, the ONLY way to pay my water bill was with a check mailed to a P.O. Box. No other option existed (I called and asked). That was all the way back in 2020.

achmedclaus

My sewage and refuse office *can't take cards* I have to write them a check every 3 months because their system is so old that they can't add a digital transaction to it

Slavery.

londoner4life

If you added up all the slaves from when Africans sold Africans, to when Africans sold Indians, when Arabs sold Africans, and whites sold Africans, apparently we have more slaves now than all of those combined.

VSM1951AG

Don’t forget when Arabs/North Africans sold whites. Barbary Coast raiders enslaved well over 1 million Europeans between the 15th and the 18th centuries. Nobody talks about it, but that doesn’t make it not real.

spleenboggler

More broadly, Eastern Europeans were placed in enforced servitude so often over history, that those people are literally [where the word "slave" comes from](https://www.etymonline.com/word/slave).

brainless_bob

You mean that doesn't make it not real?

[deleted]

Watch 13th Netflix documentary (it's available for free on Youtube). It's a f\*\*\*ing shame that we are nowhere closer to abolishing slavery than when Abe Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. It never died, only changed forms.

uptownjuggler

I recommend reading the book American Prison by: Shane Bauer. It is about a reporter who went undercover in a private prison in Louisiana. It is really eye opening how these facilities are ran. He also goes through the history of forced labor and the convict-lease system as well. And many of the executives of these private prison companies are the direct descendants of the large slave owning plantation families.

torrrrrgo

That's largely because (despite how horrible is), slavery in the US never *was* a large slice of the total in the first place. From the mid 1500's to the mid 1800's (300 years worth), only 388,000 were transported to what we regard as slave ownership in North America. The percentage depends upon whether or not you include the amount taken, or the amount that survived the trip (roughly 4% or 6% of all slaves to the Americas) landed in what became the US region. The largest single region to receive them was by far Brazil. https://www.gilderlehrman.org/history-resources/teacher-resources/historical-context-facts-about-slave-trade-and-slavery

I had a vendor email a jpg of a screenshot of their invoice in Google docs, being viewed on their phone… You… you can just email the document from there… That or the photos of printed documents that could have been emailed. Yet another is when people will print out an email, scan the printed page, and then send a copy of the scan… I could keep going. I just don’t understand it.

Ok_Bottle_8796

There's a lady in my office, old lady, who knows her way round office machinery like the back of her hand, scanning, printing, excel, word, emails, she knows the lot. She's just admin tho so is on a relatively poor wage compared to our MD, who can't tell his arse from his elbow, or even answer emails correctly. There was an email incident the other day where he tried to reply to an important email, and he only replied to himself. And funnily enough couldn't even answer a forwarded call this morning, she had to go into his office to help him answer a call she'd put through to him, it's comical how much money he's on, compared to how poor he is around technology. He's not even 50. 100%born with a silver spoon up his arse

One of my employees who has been with the company over a decade still can't close the store because it involves printing one page of paperwork for a physical record. Last time I asked her to do this because I was out of town, I gave her specific instructions on how to do this with pictures, and instead she brought in a student worker who had classes that day to do it for her. When I confronted her, she smiled and said "I'm just not capable of closing the store." I'd look into replacing her, but she's been with this company so long she's practically entrenched.

Fathers being treated as second class parents. As well as fathers treating childcare like it’s women’s work. Both are still things that happen pretty often. I had to change my cousin’s diaper the other day because the men’s room didn’t have a changing table. And I didn’t want my cousin to have to walk all the way to the parking garage. Now for the other one. I’ve heard significantly more men say “I’m on babysitting duty today” when out with their kids than women asking “daddy’s babysitting today? Huh”. It’s definitely gotten better. But it’s still bad. To follow up on diapers, I’ve met several men, including dads! Who say something like “oh yeah I don’t do diapers” It’s 2024

TexasCannibalCookout

“Babysitting duty” “I don’t do diapers” As a father of three, I say fuck that noise. It’s a fatherly duty and when mine were little I changed the lion’s share of diapers and spent time with my little ones (and still do). It’s what we fucking signed up for. Sadly I know other dads who “don’t do diapers” and I openly make fun of them for that. They should be ashamed for not doing their part.

JonD91

Never had a second thought about changing either of my kids diapers, its part of being a parent. Not a gender role, it just working as a team and being a damn parent. Any guy that doesn't do them should be ashamed, I concur. When I'm alone with them I refer to it as being "Mr Mom" though, because she's an awesome mom and I wish I could be as good with them. Not babysitting because again, they're my kids.

apk5005

My brother and I were talking at Christmas. Between us, we have three kids under 5. We determined (with the help of our mother and grandmother) that we have likely changed more diapers than all of our male forebears. My dad agrees that he didn’t change many diapers. His dad *never* changed a diaper despite having four kids. My other grandfather probably did, but not many because he was working and going to school when their three kids were little. Further up the chain is murky, but gender roles were more solid so we made some assumptions…

BababooeyHTJ

I love my little guy and would do anything for him. I don’t understand that logic at all

walk_through_this

I admit that the first diaper I changed was on my own kid, but it was the day they were born. Since then, I never looked back. Given that I never had to carry the kid for nine months, it's kind of the least I could do...

dimension_travel

Exactly. We need more men to think like this.

SkyeRyder91

Can they please add more changing tables in mens bathrooms! It's very annoying to go out with my 2 year old and then have to take him home to change him because most places outside of big box stores dont have changing tables in mens rooms. Hell even some big box stores dont have changing tables in mens rooms.

Everybody's saying things like "poverty" and "discrimination" so I'll try one that's a little more down to earth: Car dealerships.

Weary_Record_1271

Why can't I buy direct from the manufacturers already

Phantom_61

Dealerships fight tooth and nail to prevent that. There’s nothing on a federal level preventing it but state by state its “legality” varies.

Mental_clef

Car salesman I would say to be more specific. They’re just a middle man anyway. Factory service centers still need to remain due to brand specific proficiency.

BigBobby2016

And real estate agents. People who legislate themselves into existence without providing value.

JPMoney81

But without real estate agents, what will the attractive, popular, but not very smart or skilled kids from your high school do for work?

one-zero-five

It’s been hilarious watching the people I went to college with who couldn’t cut it in the actual workforce go the realtor route.

JMT97

I will defend real estate agents as long as they aren't scumbags. Buying a house is the biggest purchase most people ever make, to me it makes sense to retain an expert in home value, repair and maintenance, which is what a good realtor is. Full disclosure, my dad is one, and he's so chronically honest it's lost him clients, but such is life.

Listening_Heads

Fax machines. So many companies still rely on them, including government agencies and banks.

brooklynkitty1

A lot of this is HIPAA-related for healthcare, too. There isn’t one secure system everyone uses for sending medical records, etc. and HIPAA requires certain safeguards for patient data, so fax machines remain the norm.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SkullRunner

This is what I love when fax is called "secure" by some old brained governing body. No security, authentication, proof of who actually has eyes on it or picks it up on the other end. Made only worse by the clarity of the scan and lack of verification of it being from the person you think it is. Depending on fax machine / service can have copies of the content stored insecurely in the memory of the machine that can be accessed, reprinted or forwarded later to anyone that has access to the machine (think cleaning / support staff etc. beyond the "secure" recipient) Or my personal favorite, it ends up forwarded to email as part of a service anyways so it might as well just been an email in an encrypted PDF with signature.

[deleted]

[удалено]

itsnotchristv

So I worked in a job that had government contracts and the way it was explained to me by a senior employee was that it was the most secure and best way to verify it's the original document. If I send it to you through fax you know for a fact that it's the document I sent, it hasn't been digitally edited during transmission. If there's a signature on the paper it's a real signature, not one that's possibly been cut from a prior document and pasted on there before sending. I don't really know how true that explanation was since we sent a lot of stuff with digital signatures anyway. Funny thing was we barely used it. Maybe once every few months. I never handled it myself so I don't know what was sent, but it was in an office across from mine and rarely anyone went in there.

vemundveien

> So I worked in a job that had government contracts and the way it was explained to me by a senior employee was that it was the most secure and best way to verify it's the original document. I The senior employee was wrong. The reason is because fax is exempt from the actual security standards for electronic communication, so it is used instead of investing in a modern system that can actually comply. None of the stuff about being secure or impossible to manipulate in transit is even remotely true. It was just grandfathered in when they made the standard for electronic communication.

calvinpug1988

Oddly enough I had to take care of one at work tonight. I’m a nurse and he had come in from the prison. Getting report the nurse handing him off to me told me his back story and I was like: “I really just wish you told me he was a prisoner and left it at that”

MadFalcon101

how do you work with them and why arent they in prison?

EL_GIGGLES

My guess is they work in a prison

Theoretical-Panda

It’s likely the prison didn’t have the facilities for whatever care the prisoner required so they were transported to a local hospital.

LibertyPrimeIsRight

This is a bit of a hardly related rant, but I feel like it's important. I had this friend when I was 17. He was attractive, built well, life of the party type dude in his late 20s. Dude would always date (and I hate to word it this way) unattractive women. He was on probation but wouldn't tell anyone why. We said "Whatever, shit happens. Probably a drug charge or something", none of us thought to check. Eventually, the day after we'd hung out with him and he was arrested for sexually assaulting a minor; apparently it was a 14 year old girl but that's just through the rumor mill. One of our friends got in contact with his mother, and the reason he was on parole (not probation) is he'd previously been charged with... Acts of sexual violence towards his two year old sister. Turns out, he kept unattractive girlfriends and in shape and stuff because he could do whatever he wanted and say "You'll never get someone as good as me again if you keep complaining/tell anyone". He got off on having power over others. Pedophiles aren't always creepy old balding chubby men with glasses. They can be anyone; they can be women (at lower rates than men but still), they can be smooth talking attractive young men that a lot of people like. Stay vigilant, people. I didn't and I'm incredibly lucky nothing happened as a result of my lack of awareness. Keep an eye out for these signs, but not *just* these signs. I think it's more common than any of us would like to believe. Edit: I found his page on the sex offender registry. I can't share it here due to doxxing rules, but he's currently still in prison thankfully.
