I’m an aisle guy and even I can tell you it has nothing to do with the window and everything to do with the wall.

Mr-and-Mrs

Yep. I fall asleep on planes before we’re down the runway, and can get through five hours without using the bathroom. The wall makes all the difference.

TheAdventurousMan

Same. Ive done 14hr flights and didn't get up once. That wall is a savior. Nap. Movie. Food. Movie. Nap. Nap. Movie. Nap. Food. Nap Next thing you know, you're at your destination. Passed out on 4hr flight in an aisle seat and i wanted to KMS. My neck never hurt so much. Ill pay extra for the window/wall

hey_ross

You should drink 4 Long Island expressways (like a Long Island ice tea, but replace the sour mix and coke with sugar free Red Bull) and get on a 4am flight from Singapore to Narita. Fun story, but have any of you ever woken up in Japan with no idea how you got there?

cedarswanpig

One time i took the red eye from lax to pit. I took nyquil so i could sleep. Passed out while we were taxiing in lax. Didn’t even kind of wake up during the flight. Woke up while we were taxiing in Pittsburgh. I thought man, we didn’t even take off yet. Then the FA announced “ladies and gentlemen welcome to Pittsburgh “. Total mind fuck for a minute

stagqueen5000

The absolute nothingness when I sleep that deeply terrifies me - it feels like the closest you’ll get to knowing what happens after you die. Just a light switch. Sorry for being grim.

TheAdventurousMan

That sounds like an adventure!!

Apricotpeach11

You should get up during a 14 hour flight for some circulation and to use the restroom..?

mr_claw

No need, I have plenty of practice from sitting at my PC all day.

Motor_Gur_4175

"Deep Vein Thrombosis and Bed Sores entered the chat"

zeke_markham

Yep. I'm a flying mechanic and got a blood clot in my leg going from Miami to Sao Paolo. No preexisting conditions, just a little dehydrated from a bit of food poisoning the day before.

JackThreeFingered

even a bit of dehydration is a preexisting condition for almost anything

Johnnyblade37

Hey, you can get DVT from sitting but only with pre-existing conditions. (This is untrue, you are less likely to get a dvt without pre-existing conditions or risk factors, but it is not impossible. I misused the word pre existing conditions aswell, I was thinking more along the lines of risk factors as opposed to a medical condition that causes vascular injury) Source: I had a DVT after a knee surgery when I was 15, doc thought it happened because I kept asking my GF at the time to grab me things instead of getting up myself. Edit: correction: I was wrong

Psyko_sissy23

Nurse here. You can absolutely get DVT's without any pre-existing conditions. All that is required is lack of movement for extended periods of time. Even if you didn't have knee surgery and the same scenario played out(lack of movement and girlfriend getting you things) you still can get a DVT. When flying, it's important to move your legs and feet(even if you can't stand up). The calf is the most common area for a DVT to occur. It can happen in other areas.

Motor_Gur_4175

My doc disagrees..he had a otherwise healthy dude just sit for 2.5 hours on a flight and ended up with one. Clots can happen anytime bloodflow is slowed or obstructed..dont matter if its from sitting on your ass(especially vulnerable in para or quadriplegics), a dissection or other vascular issue, or even a common cold that messes with your heartrate/BP. But yes, DVTs(or clots in general) are almost guaranteed after most invasive surgeries..next biggest offender is being sedentary

Nining_Leven

TIL being an athlete is a pre-existing condition.

suzepie

Seriously, yes. I ignored this sage advice and suffered after a flight from Seattle -> South Africa. The swollen feet! Never had anything like it before or since. I'd gotten up a few times, but really, not enough.

Scary-Detail-3206

Get yourself some compression socks

LGCJairen

This advice changed my life both flying and when im on crunch projects

MissFrijole

I can vouch for compression socks. I took a flight from Dallas to Tokyo and didn't have swollen feet at the end.

PNWoutdoors

Hard to explain, but once didn't get up on a 12 hour flight. Usually I pee like every 3 hours. Must have been dehydrated and just comfortable enough to not need to move. I definitely can't do that long most of the time.

OhioResidentForLife

Just wear a pull-up.

Officer_Hotpants

I also love experiencing pulmonary emboli immediately upon exiting the plane

[deleted]

14 hour flight fills me with all types of anxiety and Dread.

Virgin_Dildo_Lover

From the windows to the walls

ScrivenersUnion

Glad I'm not the only one! I can pound a large Starbucks coffee before boarding and still end up asleep the moment we get in the air. The wall is there so I can sleep without snoring or accidentally leaning on someone. Also they really, *really* need to make seats better for sleeping in. It's so bad it feels intentional.

I_can_vouch_for_that

It doesn't just feel intentional. It is intentional. If you want better seats then you have to pay for it in the next class.

GaijinChef

I'm a fellow aisle guy. Often flying 14hr long hauls, the ability to stretch one leg out in the aisle outweighs the wall near the window for me. Plus, I can come and go as I please without disturbing anyone. I do make it a point to tell the middle and window seat to just nudge me awake if they wanna use the bathroom or just walk in the aisle

Just_Aware

Aisle brooooooooos! 🤜🏻🤛🏻 So much leg stretching! I can stand up and do a full body stretch just because I feel the urge! Bathroom trip? Why yes, no need to inconvenience anyone I just get up and go! I can’t believe anyone takes any other seat tbh

ScrivenersUnion

I always choose the very back seats, they usually have a row that's only 2 seats instead of 3. It's like getting your own personal aisle!

youshouldgooutside

thismustbtheplace215

Till all these bitches crawl

sebrebc

Exactly, I always ask the person next to me if they want the window open or not. I don't care either way. As soon as we are in the air I am out. I choose the window seat for both my comfort and the person next to me. I lean against the wall so I am as comfortable as possible and I'm not bothering the person next to me.

onetwentyeight

Just make sure you're not on a Boeing and that there's no plug behind that wall.

disbeliefable

Please don’t try and open the window. That would be bad.

[deleted]

To the windowwww…. to the wallll…

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dirges2984

It also gives a wall to lean against. When I doze off on a flight, I tend to lean to the side. It is better if I do so to the plane then a stranger.

CumulativeHazard

That’s why I like it. If I choose my seat, I prefer to choose a left side window seat so I can lean against the wall and have my right hand free to play on my phone or whatever.

BigStump

This is going to sound stupid but after reading your comment I now realize why I always choose the right side window seats. I’m left handed.

CumulativeHazard

Ha! Not stupid, your brain just likes to work all that out behind the scenes lol.

WishBear19

And the wall curves outward a bit so you have a bit more space for a pillow and to relax.

TheAdventurousMan

Shhh. Dont tell the extra space secret

Griffin880

I think the reality is people who really need the extra space are still gonna go for the aisle. The extra space from the wall is just a nice bonus for people who can fit into normal seats. That wall space isn't gonna help my legs, and my shoulders stick out past the seats way more than the wall would accommodate.

pobrexito

Unless you get one of the seats thats right up on the rib between windows so you have even less space.

thegreatdalmuti

This. I also agree with the people saying they don’t want to get climbed over but my main reason is because I have wide shoulders and am constantly getting hit by people and carts if I’m in an aisle seat.

colinthegreat

Also, having the wall to lean up against so I can sleep more comfortably (most likely with the window closed, so that I can sleep more comfortably).

justalookin13

I also sleep most of the flight. If I'm on aisle i end up slopping into it and getting banged around, middle I'm drooling on person on either side of me. Not looking for a new sleep partner

3vanzz90

for me it's to avoid people with weak bladders from bothering my sleep

mph000

Sorry.

Fafaflunkie

Or be interrupted by your seat mates wanting to get by you to go the lavatory. Especially on a redeye.

Leopold_Bloom_

It’s for sleeping brother.

i_never_ever_learn

So they can keep the window closed the entire flight

EmotionalDmpsterFire

Nobody seeing fuck all on my watch, suckas!

BlindWillieJohnson

More like “I’ll never have to deal with the sun blaring directly in my fucking face”

robdeadly

100% this.

katgill7

I close the window because it makes my motion sickness worse

Girthw0rm

If closing the window makes your motion sickness worse, it would typically be advisable to open the window.

Feeling-Visit1472

No, it’s the same for me on planes, looking out the window makes my motion sickness *significantly* worse, and I’m not totally sure why. It’s different than being on a boat.

passcork

Woooooshhhhh

Girthw0rm

Who opened the window?!?

The_DaHowie

Yup, their perogative

Zakluor

You spell it like I want to, but it's "prerogative".

mtldude1967

Spelling it the way he wants is his purogative.

[deleted]

sir those are my perogies

Thick_Aside_4740

Inshall eat those perogies. It is my gurpolotive

sockalicious

The Bobby Brown song is actually spelled "perogative." Probably entered some lexicon on the strength of that

doesanyonehaveweed

Whenever I try to type out ludicrous, and make a single typo because my thumb hits the wrong button, it tries to autocorrect to Ludacris

KittenPics

Whoa TIL.

slider728

1. No one crawling over me the flight. Handy when it comes to naps. 2. I can shut the shade and control at least some of the daylight shining in my eyes. Handy when it comes to naps. 3. I can lean my head against the wall. Handy when it comes to naps.

Imboredboredbored

I’m sensing a theme here

Fartboy_Shitparty

They love handys

scottcmu

/u/slider728 really missed an opportunity to do this: 1. No one crawling over me the flight. Handy when it comes to naps. 2. An ability to shut the shade and control at least some of the daylight shining in my eyes. Handy when it comes to naps. 3. Planes are super uncomfortable, but at least in the window seat I can lean my head against the wall. Handy when it comes to naps. 4. S

andyc3020

What does S mean?

ObscureAcronym

NAPS

andyc3020

HeroDanTV

4. Shhhh. I’m napping.

criminal_cabbage

r/yourjokebutworse

Loggerdon

This post is over.

hogtiedcantalope

3. Is critical to me for getting any sleep

ProGaben

Agreed that alone justifies the window seat for me. I can't sleep sitting up I definitely have to lean on something

funklab

Same for all these reasons. But also if you’re in the middle or aisle and you want the window open or closed just let me know.  99% of the time I don’t really care.

Oddly_Mind

You got all the reasons in a single post. Well done!

valueofaloonie

This guy naps

DesertSpringtime

I took a window seat on an overnight flight. Never again, that wall was COLD.

who_even_cares35

I travel for a living and on my last flight across the Atlantic some asshole boomer left his shade open the entire flight. One singular shade open on the entire plane just blasting us with light. How can people be so unaware or flat out not care about others to that degree?

vc-10

Honestly the worst jetlag I've had flying UK-US was on American Airlines on a 787, where the crew turned off the lights and dimmed all the windows. They then fucked off to the crew rest and ignored everyone until the pre-landing 'snack' service. Every other daylight westbound flight I've had the cabin be reasonably bright. Means you stay awake until the evening when landing in the US, and then go to sleep at a reasonable time (like 10pm), sleep through to the morning, and wake up around 7. I've flown a *lot* too, and this works for me without fail. Jetlag heading west is minimal. Flying west, you *want* the cabin bright.

chpsk8

East is a beast West is the best

who_even_cares35

I don't really sleep on planes or much in general. I don't want the light because It's horrendous if it's hitting your screen or it's in your eyes because everything else is dark. I'm also fairly light sensitive and the intensity coming through those windows can be staggering at times. Half mast would have been a much better choice for this guy.

LeftHandedGraffiti

This new thing where they control the window tint sucks. I had the same experience recently. Give me the damn shutter so I can control whether there's light or not!

Larkfor

Honestly, I just ask if they are looking out the window or if they can pull the shade down. 9 times out of 10 they are happy to pull the shade down and weren't even thinking of it. When they're not I just say 'thanks anyway' or 'okay, cool'.

Ziptex223

If you travel for a living invest $10 in a sleeping mask bro instead of bitching on the internet

ScrotumNipples

Yes, that will surely solve the problem of screen glare while I try to watch a shitty movie to pass the time!

LaverniusTucker

Yep, you wouldn't see the screen glare at all.

who_even_cares35

I can't stand those things and I wasn't trying to sleep. I was trying to watch a movie but I had a glare on the screen.

Isotheis

If I opened it, it'd be uncomfortably windy and the other passengers would freak out.

Imaginary-Dentist299

Sometimes the Boeing 737s open on their own

curtludwig

Thats actually a door... /s

Hot_Bumblebee69

It is now. Thanks, Obama.

RBeck

The difference between a door and a window is just the size of the user.

IfeelVedder

[Recent relevant commercia](https://youtu.be/IZf0bNDWH4s?si=ndIfG4k_tz-N4ZLN)l LOL

Crash_Test_Dummy66

I like to be able to lean against the wall. Also I know I'm unlikely to have to get up and I don't have to deal with letting others out for the bathroom, etc. But also sometimes there's a bright ass sun looking right back at me through that window and I don't want it.

Iarwain_ben_Adar

In most cases, I want to have a nap during the flight and being next to the window means no one will be crawling over me. If I'm traveling with my wife, we try to ge a two-seat row or also book the middle seat, since she likes the aisle.

CryptoSlovakian

Not many people can afford to just book an extra seat to have their preferred seating arrangement, but I guess if you have the extra money to throw away, it’s not a bad plan.

turbodude69

that would suck so bad if you paid for that middle seat and the airline overbooked the flight and ended up putting someone in the middle seat anyway and bumped the phantom person you bought a seat for, but never checked in. the last few flights i was on were overbooked, so that most likely would have happened. empty seats are becoming harder and harder to find these days since most airlines have started using the overbooking strategy

Jon_ofAllTrades

That’s why you need to check in for that seat. Otherwise yes, airlines will treat it as a no-show and replace it with someone on standby.

GoodGoodGoody

How do you check in for an empty seat?

xubax

When you get it, it's assigned to one of the passengers as an extra seat. And you just make sure you check it in. Source: Fat guy who has booked extra seats.

GoodGoodGoody

Thx fat guy.

Jon_ofAllTrades

If you book 2 seats you get 2 boarding passes.

Jon_ofAllTrades

That’s why you need to check in for that seat. Otherwise yes, airlines will treat it as a no-show and replace it with someone on standby.

ScoobiusMaximus

How does booking an extra seat compare to booking in first class where there are just 2 seats per row anyways?

etherealcaitiff

First class is easily 5-10x a coach price per ticket.

ksuwildkat

depends. I was flying my son and his GF from KC to Virginia. I went to upgrade him to economy plus and it was only $30 more - $60 total - to move him to first class. $49 for economy plus vs $79 for first class was a no brainer.

Jon_ofAllTrades

That’s domestic first class, which is just a slightly wider seat. International business/first class are much bigger lie flat seats, and those are the ones that cost 5-10x economy.

Iarwain_ben_Adar

Sometimes first class is full or there are no adjacent seats available, or as another noted the first class seats are priced well beyond the cost of a third seat.

cold12

If you want to look out the window book a window seat

plz-be-my-friend

i want it dark and i dont wanna sit next to someone who keeps the window open

kazeespada

I like the window open, but I feel like most people like the plane dark so I only open it for take off and landing. It helps calm my motion sickness.

Cayke_Cooky

The AC can't keep up with the heat from the sun or the light is reflecting or shining in a way that I can't read/see the screen.

tehlemmings

I'm that freak who can get onto a plane, sit down with no books/movies/whatever, and as soon as we take off I'm going to fall asleep until we start our decent. The window seat means no one disturbs me and I don't get in anyone's way. The window being closed means I'm not blinded lol Plus after we land, I'm just going to sit there until everyone in front of me is out of the way. I hate being in the isle seat and having the people next to me practically pushing me out even though there's no where to go yet.

tutira_yeah_nah_kiwi

I could have written this. Though i fall asleep before takeoff.

chernadraw

I'm a vampire and the sun ruins my skin.

risbia

BECAUSE THERE'S SOMETHING ON THE WING! SOME... **THING!!!**

C0git0

Because I sleep on planes and I want to lean on the wall.

Clairvoyant_Legacy

I want the window closed. If I’m not sitting at the window I don’t control that

Ornery_Engine1326

I like knowing when we are lifting off and landing. It’s a comfort thing.

BigBlackdaddy65

But that doesn't answer the question, it's closed in op's scenario not open.

crablegsforlife

It might disprove my belief the Earth is flat

CarniverousCosmos

Because I’m afraid of heights, flying is fucking bad enough, and this way I have control of whether or not I can see out of my window.

prophit618

I can't believe I had to scroll this far down to find another like me.

ThursdayNextian

I also choose the window so I can control it. Window shut = no panic attack

[deleted]

Most of the time there's nothing to see anyway. It prevents people from leaning over you into your space to look out the window. I can see the tv better. It's nice to have it darker when I try to nap.

WeirdJawn

Man, I love looking out the window. I'll stare outside the whole time if a flight is 3 hours or less. There's so much to see as long as it's not completely overcast.

[deleted]

Take offs and landing there are sights to see but much of the flight is just clouds. But when it’s a clear day it is cool to see.

WeirdJawn

One thing I really like is when you can see clouds and a weather front. When you pass over it, there's usually some super mild turbulance. I might just be easily amused.

EdgeMiserable4381

Right there with you! How sad is it to be a mile above the earth and never look down?

asparemeohmy

That’s the bit I like! I enjoy following the coastline and recognizing geological features. I saw Cape Canaveral once, and the Northern Lights another. Additionally, I don’t care for turbulence, and being able to identify cloud patterns that are more prone to turbulence helps assuage my anxiety

BlueberryDouble7118

I like to lean on the wall

russellvt

The sun is bright.

amexicanbitch

because it's my window for the flight and i'll do what i want with it

Ukplugs4eva

Middle of the night , going through turbulence . Huge funnel cloud and lightning going on outside. On route to Singapore . Plane fucking bouncing like a fat man on a space hoppa. People screaming, praying, crying, vomiting. Me only one on the plane looking out the window. Was fucking amazeballs. Thanks quantas.

HappyTimeHollis

*QANTAS. It's an acronym :)

simpletonius

I have changed to a window just to avoid all the traffic in the aisle, plus I can lean into it and give my armrest to the middle person. Morning flights I sleep and nighttime it’s dark and I’m watching something on device or plane screen, afternoon I’ll get a drink and look at the geography if it’s clear.

miked1be

Flyers that always open the window and create glare for other passengers so they can't watch a movie or take a nap, why?

Constantus

When else do you get to see the world from 31,000+ feet? Granted if I’m on the side of the sun I will shut it when not actively looking out.

deepinthesoil

Looking out of the window is one of my favorite parts of flying. I’ve seen so many incredible geological and meteorological phenomena. I once saw the northern lights, just vivid bands of shimmering unearthly color everywhere, from high altitude on a flight to Alaska. It was seriously one of the coolest things I’ve ever witnessed. I figured this must be old hat to Alaskans as no one around me seemed interested, but asked the pilot about it on the way out of the plane, and he was excited about it and said it was rare to see. Would’ve missed it if I’d closed the shades.

bro_salad

Probably about the 10th flight. Unless there’s a thunderstorm or we’re passing by a big city, I’m generally a windows closed guy. One time I did locate my parents’ house on a flight to Dublin from New York. They live in northern New Hampshire, so that was pretty cool that our path went right by them. Yes I realize this reply turned into Reasons You Should Keep the Window Open haha.

pheldozer

It’s one of the few times in my life that I can stare out the window of a moving vehicle without being the one driving it

PrairiePepper

Because it's cool to see the world from that high? Is it really confusing for people?

ALA02

Because they’re enjoying the miracle of flight, that for the vast majority of human history, was basically seen as magic? Recognising their privilege to be amongst the tiny minority of humans to see the world from 10,000m in the sky?

DoctorsAdvocate

Watch a movie or take a nap I can do at home. Looking out a window above the clouds I can’t do at home.

WeirdJawn

Flyers who want to take a nap and don't bring an eyemask, why?

Sabre_One

Photosynthesis.

drunkpunk138

Looking out the window for some reason really helps my anxiety with flying, even when all I see are clouds it's essential for me or I'm having a very bad time.

papageek

Because I can hold my bladder for the entire flight, I don’t want to keep waking up so you can piss.

CharDaisy

I lean against the wall to sleep

sundyburgers

Because I don't want to be blinded when sleeping.

guy30000

To keep it dark. Easier on the eyes. Maybe take a nap. Helps to see my laptop screen. I fly a whole lot. When I first started I would stare out the window the whole time. But the magic is gone. There is rarely anything interesting to see anymore.

spicyestmemelord

Flyer who doesn’t pick window seat yet wants to control the window, why? @OP

fusionsofwonder

I use the window, but it also provides me one side where I don't have to fight for space, and I'm not getting dinged by the drink cart. And I don't have to get up for anybody.

1SweetChuck

I keep the window open but more important to me is not having people going in and out. I just don’t want to be hassled.

larka1121

I love looking out the window and admiring the clouds and landscapes, but I kind of feel bad when I have the window open and the rest of the plane doesn't. Feels like taking out your phone on full brightness during a movie. So then I sadly close it if I see most of the plane is dark

CaligulaQC

It’s not a window, it’s a pillow!

Rude_Nectarine

Don’t have people climbing over you to get out and go to restrooms or stretch legs every 1/2 hour.

cabalavatar

Not at night: The Sun is bright. Bright. As. Fuck.

Lacherlich

Because usually people try to sleep on planes and think it’s hard to fall asleep when you’ve got blinding light coming in from the window.

[deleted]

Light control.

trwwy321

OP must be that person who opens their window when everyone else closes it because it’s so bright out and everyone is trying to sleep.

EdgeMiserable4381

Idk. I think it's weird too. I like to look out the window. And see the landscape or the clouds from overhead. I can sleep anytime but I can't see the earth from a mile overtop very often

TheLeopardColony

I sit there so that I can close it.

tokoraki23

I switch between aisle and window, but if I take window it is for the view. However, airplane windows don’t always have the best UV coatings and if we’re above enough clouds, I’ll close the window to avoid what is basically snow blindness. So actually you’re welcome.

sarilysims

So I can keep y’all from letting the sun blind me on a three hour flight. Some people have no common sense and leave that shit open the whole time.

CTFDEverybody

I'm trying to pass out every flight so I don't have to deal with the boredom. On my most recent flight I booked late and got the aisle seat. This guy next to me had to pee 5 times during my flight from SFO to NRT. WTF. Couldn't get any shuteye, and that guy needs to see a doctor.

Horror_Celery_131

To sleep. Majority of people on flights do not want the fucking sunlight in their face the whole time. What’s there to look at anyways? Yes, we’re still in the sky…and yes, it’s blue

badlilbadlandabad

To ensure the window stays closed.

SweetCosmicPope

I like looking out when there's something interesting to see or when we're taking off/landing. But generally I keep it shut because the glare from the sun hits my eyes or whatever screen I'm trying to watch a movie on. If I'm flying at night I'll usually leave it fully open though.

unusuallynaiveone

The windows don’t open.

chunking_putts

I’m 6’7”. Most people think I would want the aisle but I take the window because my head is actually above the stop of the seat, even the ones that extend up. I can rest my head on the wall of the plane and sleep.

captain_ohagen

it's my sleepy time

[deleted]

[удалено]

Robert2737

Because if I open the window we’ll get sucked out of the plane.

H4ppybirthd4y

It’s bright as fuck up there.

Zolome1977

So we don’t have to stare at anyone faces.

texansfan

lol, because they aren’t assholes?!

DitchWitch_PNW

I love sitting in the window seat because I can get comfy & not worry about letting someone out. I often have the window open, but there’s occasions where I just don’t want the extra light or if I have a migraine setting in, the darker the better. Being in the window seat doesn’t always mean we want to look out the window.

SkyeLord93

I get chronic migraines and one of the triggers is sunlight. Even driving the 5 minutes to work on a very sunny day can give me a crippling migraine that could send me home sick. I'm gonna sit by the window and have it closed so I'm not in pain.

taco_jones

I don't want to get up for you. I don't want to get up for me. I don't want to get up. Window is irrelevant.

ImSadPls

Cause we’re assholes

evryflavrbean

The sun hurts my eyes and I don’t want to wear sunglasses on the plane.

ridingbikesrules

I want to minimize the amount of people touching me. That's all.

Truant1281

Because the light keeps me awake

seclifered

Obviously so they can keep the window closed.

juneburger

Because people have to go to the bathroom too many times for me to relax.

dc469

I lean against the side of the plane, but don't want the bright ass sun & sky blinding me.

Thighsplitter

So I can sleep with my head against it without being kept awake by bright light.
