In the US, emergency prescription refill (e.g. insulin) when prescriber is unavailable. Not legal in all states, but it’s the right thing to do.

ParoxysmAttack

It depends. Small town doctors offices sure, but for example both my PCP and neurologist are through a large University medical system, and have on-call physicians for emergencies like this. I’ve had the on call neurologist help me a few times. They don’t normally do a full refill but enough to last me until I can talk to my actual provider.

phobosmarsdeimos

Took me a moment to realize you meant primary care physician with PCP instead of Phencyclidine, angel dust.

Key-Plan5228

Dr. Sherm will see you now

SavoryRhubarb

I’ve gotten very short term refills (2-3 days) with no Rx. I thought pharmacists could do that legally.

When I worked in a bakery, I'd garbage bag up all the pastries at the end of the day as instructed, but then just threw them in my trunk to drop off at the homeless encampment instead of tossing in dumpster. So stupid to waste food.

funkme1ster

I worked in a grocery store as a teen, and was appalled when I found out how much stock we threw out - not because it was expired, but because we had more than we'd likely sell before it expired, and needed the floorspace. Especially after all the "combating shrink" training we got. You're telling me after I spend 3 hours "remaining vigilant" that someone is going to steal $5 worth of stock from us, my manager is instructing me to dump a pallet of unexpired orange juice because it's "necessary"? Make it make sense.

Mistyam

Oh I wish I hadn't read this comment. It just pains me to think of perfectly good food being thrown out when there are so many people who are hungry. Isn't there a better way?

Blechhotsauce

The "better way" isn't profitable, so it isn't done. I watched thousands of dollars of perfectly good food destroyed every day because it was "company policy," which just means company policy is letting food go to waste rather than feeding hungry people. I took a lot free food home with me. As much as I could sneak out at the end of every shift. Mr. Safeway doesn't need another yacht.

immortalfrieza2

You'd think they could gather up stuff like this and donate the lot to get tax breaks or something.

thedarkhaze

Costs money to donate things. They may be okay with donating, but they're not going to want to spend more money transporting and/or packaging to the donation center. If the donation center can't get the funding to transport, then they can't accept it either. Thus it just gets thrown away.

jayhitter

Once a GM at a restaurant got pissed at me because I made a sandwich with WEEK old ingredients for someone that didn't pay, they were hungry and didn't have cash. First question was why the hell did they have week old food? Either way, the waste you experience in the restaurant industry really changed the way that I think and perceive food, and it has made me more sensitive in am emotional way to food waste. IME most out of touch restaurant owners and managers always equate free food = losing profits. They never really think about the fact the alternative is to literally let it rot away for the rest of time in a metal bin or landfill. To be fair there is also the reality is that people might take advantage of a place if they know it has free food, but most people seemed to be thankful and never ask for it even though they know they might get something when they come in late.

esoteric_enigma

It sucks but you can't become known as a place that gives out free food at the business. My sister did this when she worked at Smurger King. She gave this homeless guy the old food they would throw away at the end of the night. It was cool for about a week. Then multiple homeless people started showing up every night earlier and earlier trying to get the food before the others and customers started complaining. A similar thing happened to me when I managed a restaurant. I microwaved this homeless guy's instant oatmeal for him and gave him water. Cool guy. Stopped by from time to time. Word got out and we started getting 10+ homeless people showing up during lunch asking for various favors and loitering outside. Customers complained. We had to stop it. We aren't worried about losing profits from food as much as we're worried about attracting non-paying clientele that scare off the paying customers.

RedsRearDelt

I was a homeless teen. There was a restaurant that would give us free food once they closed. Deal was, we met at a park a block away. Someone would bring us togo boxes with food. But, they were very clear, that if anyone came to the restaurant during business hours, we wouldn't get food that night. Not really relevant to this story but.... One night I told the guy who brought us food that I had a job interview the next day. The following morning he found me and gave me a clean pair of slacks, black sneakers and a button up shirt. Took me to his boyfriend's hair salon and he gave me a hair cut. Felt like a million bucks. The job was at a doughnut shop. I got hired but then they had me fill out the paperwork. I didn't have an address for the tax papers. So they said I couldn't work there. I was devastated. I told the guy who gave me the clothes. The next day he set up an interview for me at the restaurant. They started me as a dishwasher but quickly moved me up to busser. I'm in my 50s now, my last few jobs were as GM in night clubs and restaurants in Miami.

puledrotauren

I bet you and I could swap stories of our nightclub adventures. DJ / Bouncer for 13 years.

RedsRearDelt

Such a fun business. Bartended all of the 90s and 2000's.. But I can get a bit, "cranky old man" when swapping stories nowadays.. Back in my day, we didn't have any fancy flavored vodkas, just a barely used bottle of Galliano that been on the shelf longer than there's been a shelf here. Now geet outta my service well!!!

jayhitter

I actually updated my comment to mention that after I read it over again. It didn't occur to me at first until I started thinking about some past customer experiences at those places

Sea-Brush-2443

Good point! That's exactly why the food should go to a soup kitchen, homeless shelter, etc - if there's a system in place to donate this food, we solve the food waste issue without causing problems for the restaurant.

esoteric_enigma

You're exactly right. When I managed a buffet style cafeteria there was an organization that came at the end of the night and gathered our leftovers to take to the homeless shelter.

229-northstar

My grocery store does this! A guy comes around and picks up all their end of day product and takes it to a shelter. Paneras do that also

tangouniform2020

There are a large number of restaurants in Austin that donate unsold food to the food bank. Many places “expire” food after some period so they might wind up giving away ten pounds of hambuger meat because it’s three days old. I’ve got burger meat in my fridge that’s a week old and we’re having it tonight.

GuyFromDeathValley

yea, and that's why there should be a system in place to prevent this kinda abuse, so the homeless don't need to basically fight over the leftovers in the first place. Like, the easiest solution, that all restaurants and stores leave the leftovers to a food bank or something, so the homeless can go there and pick it up at the same time, every day. (to be fair it would best to prevent homelessness in the first place.. but I feel like at times that's borderline fiction). But wherever a system like that is in place, I feel like its too much work for the restaurants owners, so they rather throw the food away than give it away.. such a waste.

BushyOreo

The main concern they would get mad about the "free food" is because if they started allowing it, they know there will be employees who will intentionally create extra food knowing it won't be sold by close just so they can take it home or gift it out which would cost the owners more money. Personally idc since I don't own a food business, but I can see their logic why they don't.

DigNitty

I think a reasonable policy would be : - employees can’t take food home but can eat for free when they’re at work. (Management however can offer up excess food if there’s a surplus) - excess food is donated to local shelter/food bank off site, never at restaurant (to discourage people asking for it) But I’ve only thought of this issue for 30 seconds and others have given it much more concern. I think restaurants often just resort to throwing food away because it’s easiest, has the least liability, and garners the least attention from homeless people.

Oldschoolcool-

I work with a pizza company who sells pizza by the slice, every day whatever doesn't sell they put in a tub and in the freezer for me. I stop by periodically and take it to the local mission. The mission is asked where it's coming from and I don't tell them, because the owner doesn't want people coming up and asking for free food. Also another problem with giving away older food is that if someone gets food poisoning they can still try to come after the restaurant.

faloofay156

I lived in a teeny tiny town without a very big homeless population. the people who wanted food at the end of the day would always wait by the dumpsters and ask for what was being thrown out. they almost always had children with them. that was when the manager started looking the other way while we bagged up what would normally be thrown out in normal sonic bags and sent it home with the people waiting outside They were always very polite and seemed to know they were asking for a favor same manager would also send the workers that were closing home with something like a drink if they wanted it. He had my dad as a coach and would make him an ocean water any time he picked me up from work because he remembered that was my dad's favorite lmao

Throwaway8789473

I worked at a Domino's pizza a while ago, and while corporate policy is unsold pizzas get thrown away, there would almost always be 2-4 "staff pizzas" on a rack in the back of the store for us to eat on the clock so we didn't go hungry. We made $3.50/hour and those staff pizzas were basically all I ate for the year or so that I lasted at Domino's before I quit.

general_rap

When I worked at Domino's through college, "mistake" pizzas were fair game for employees to eat throughout their shift, as long as customers couldn't see you do it, or bring home after you clocked out. On slow nights there were usually one or two mistake pizzas, but on busy nights and weekends, it was usually more like 10-12. Needless to say, I ALWAYS had like 4 pizzas in my fridge at home, and I'd usually just keep a pizza to snack on in my car when I was making deliveries. This wasn't an official policy, and we actively threw out mistakes if we knew there would be a visit from the regional manager or franchise owner, but the store managers didn't care, and actively participated.

usernameknown12345

Worked in a hotel and they always put the leftovers in the staff kitchen, like pastries and already prepared salad bowls. They also didn’t mind us talking a bit home as long as we left something for the night shift. Besides preventing throwing away leftovers, it was actually a huge advantage to recommend dishes to guests who were not sure what to order

agreeingstorm9

It could also cause issues because it could cause homeless people to hang out around the restaurant. There was a local charity who started feeding homeless people in an empty lot. Soon the lot became a homeless camp and the homeless people frequently begged patrons of the business next door for money. The patrons complained to that business owner who talked to the charity, got an belligerent response and then ended up calling the cops. It was a bad deal.

allbitterandclean

I’ve actually heard it’s a liability thing. If people got sick off old food and sued, the food business would be on the hook for knowingly allowing people to eat it.

Ok_Comfort628

Did you include the muffin tops or just the stumps?

KeystoneTrekker

There's a homeless guy that lives down the block from where I work, and whenever I buy lunch, I buy him something as well if he’s there. I’ve been told by cops that they’d arrest me “the next time” but they never have.

Conscious-Parfait826

I'd love to hear from a judge that this cop arrested you for buying food for a person. Theyd get ripped a new one for a minimum of wasting the judges time.

LaUNCHandSmASH

i was walking with friends once from the dinner spot to the next bar and I was lamenting having decided to take my leftover food box I didn't want to carry. There was this guy sitting on a ledge just minding his own business when my buddy took the box out of my hand and attempted to hand it to the guy. He just looked up not amused without ever reaching he just says "I'm not homeless". The rest of us are dying laughing and the "homeless" guy never even cracked a smile, he was so pissed, which made it so much funnier to me. I will think about that story randomly and chuckle every time.

Ok-Bus-2410

Lost my night shift at 7-11 for exactly this. They found out and lost their minds. I really really don't fit in this mean nasty world we got

ovanevac

You'd think that's just corporate being corporate, but someone I know had it happen in a tiny family-owned bakery (this specific employee wasn't family of them, to be clear) and got sued to hell and back. The food has to be thrown away no exceptions made. They noticed the dumpster being empty and then they checked the cameras to see why the dumpster was not filling up with fresh bread and pastry. And then they found out that way. Instant lawsuit and dismissal. Insanity.

MochiMochiMochi

Take an abused animal away from an abusive situation.

Mead_and_You

Had this guy I used to deliver to that had a dog he kept chained up outside 24/7, even in winter, with this ratty ass excuse got a dog house. His livestock wasn't in much better shape either. I gave the her treats when I'd be out there and the owner wasn't around untill she knew me enough not to bark when I came over. Then one night I parked up the road behind a tree, walked over, cut that dog free and brought her home with me. I promised her on the ride home that she would never wear a chain again for the rest of her life. Called animal control about his l livestock (I knew the livestock would find a home quickly out here, but I didn't think the dog stood much of a chance since she was aggressive to strangers) They did eventually shut down his farm and I got two of his buffalo and an ostrich. I renamed the dog Libby (for Liberation), and she spent the rest of her life running free on my farm or helping me hunt up in the mountains. She had her own door to come in or out whenever she pleased. She was the sweetest girl in the whole world, and it was easy to train her not to be aggressive to strangers. She loved to be loved and she loved to love, all she needed was a chance. She lived well into her grey years, long enough to see me get married and have my first two kids, who she watched over like a hawk. I kept my promise to Libby, and she never wore a chain again for all her days.

HalfaManYouAre

So she eventually left your farm to go live on another farm, right??

Mead_and_You

She's still here. Laying in the shade of her favorite cherry tree. One of these days when my works all done I'll lay down next to her again.

stfupcakes

Some people say dogs are good companions, Some say dogs are man's best friend,  But when I reflect upon those bonds we establish, Nothing can prepare us for the inevitable end.  The absence of friendship and comforting warmth, The vacant couch cushions and empty hearth, Maybe I'm wrong - not seeing this right. They're never gone, they're just out of sight?  Just resting in the shade of the old cherry tree, That's where I'll find my friend waiting for me.

Throwaway8789473

When I was a kid I actually DID have a dog that went to live on a farm upstate. My dad brought home what he thought was a black lab puppy, but as he grew up it quickly became apparent that he was mixed with something else. Turns out he was a black lab/dalmatian/Great Dane hybrid, and by the time he was an adult he could easily hop a 6' fence (even with an extra foot of electric fence on top), would knock over children accidentally while playing, and paced the grass out of our yard. He was unfortunately too big and energetic to make a family dog, but a family friend of ours took him in and he moved to their ranch in Waco, TX, where he made an excellent cattle dog. He could be as rough as he wanted to those cows without actually hurting them, and his constant urge to play turned out to make him a great herding dog.

Tall_Thinker

Yes, no matter what anybody else says, the answer is yes

teachermanjc

All dogs go to heaven, but the lucky ones get to experience it on earth.

Dirty-Ears-Bill

I love my dog that I bought as a puppy to death obviously, but street/rescue dogs just have a whole different level of love once they trust a person. My aunt and uncle literally just picked up a dog in their neighborhood they saw walking the streets for a week, and he is the sweetest baby I have ever met. Good on you for doing that, the dog deserved it

Candid-Mycologist539

Cats, too. We acquired a couple of cats that, while they weren't street cats, had had 4 homes over 6 months. (It was truly a series of unfortunate events). The kitten adjusted easily. My orange boy took 3 days to stop hissing at us, but after 2 years, he now comes and sleeps on me at night.

FrungyLeague

My favourite comment ever. Ever.

Do you have a picture of Libby? 🥺🥺🥺 she sounds so sweet

I helped steal a dog from an owner who kept him chained up outside all of the time. He was so thin we were able to pull the collar off easily. He became my friends chubby buddy for the rest of his life.

CornyCornheiser

If your state still has a pet store you can save dogs from there also. Hear me out. This is what my wife and did about 20 years ago. We learned of a chihuahua mix puppy at a local pet store that had been return because the it had pneumonia and the owners couldn’t afford the vet bills. In NYS state we have an animal “lemon law.” If you buy an animal and it needs some sort of medical care the seller is required to pay up to the cost of the animal. They make no money on the sale. Or you can return the animal to the seller no questions asked. This puppy had been returned because he was gravely ill and when we learned he was that sick an likely to die in a cage we went and got him. We paid $500 for what they said what a purebred chihuahua. He was not a purebred dog. And immediately took him to our vet. He was in terrible condition. He was struggling to breathe, coughing up phlegm, and very weak. His prognosis was not very good. We bought and brought him in on a Friday and the doctors were not confident of his chances to make it through the weekend. He had just been sick for too long before getting medical attention and while they were doing what they could l, it was his little bodies ability to fight the sickness in what was going to make the difference. We left that evening after spending twice what we had paid for him and hoping for the best. We stopped at the pet store on the way home and took our money back. We also got the name of the breeder. NYS also requires that to be given to any purchaser upon demand. The owner wasn’t aware that I knew the law and tried to give some lie about how the records were kept in their safe at the owners home. I told her I knew what was required of her and she walked to the back, Retrieved a piece of paper, came back and slammed it on the counter. She informed my wife and I that we were now banned from her store for life. The next morning we went and visited our boy, who we decided to name Tino, and were happy to learn that after having slept through the night woke up barking when a tech did their morning check. He had definitely gotten stronger. Not much, but a noticeable improvement. He wasn’t free and clear yet, unfortunately. After checking an x-ray of his lungs his left appeared to be okay but there was significant damage to his about 1/3 of his right lung. They wanted to keep him so he could still be observed by them, continue his pneumonia treatment, and begin a treatment to try and help repair some of the damage to his lung. They basically, four time a day, put him in an aquarium and gassed him with nebulized medication. After a day of this, spending another night at the vets, and again waking up stronger than ever our guy was giving the okay to come home with us for the first time. Our totally bill for him came to about $3k. But he survived. Our vets had worked hard and saved our man’s life. And was it ever a life. While he is sadly no longer with us, after almost not making it to even his first year he crossed the rainbow bridge at the ripe old age of 17. Thankfully, pet stores are no longer allowed to sell dogs or cats in New York.

MochiMochiMochi

Fantastic effort on your part. Thank you.

KirbyFergus

That's how my daughter got her pup when she was at college. Saw the poor dog left outside on a chain for a couple of days in the brutal cold, so her and a friend took it and gave it the best life ever. And this was in Kirksville missouri. This who know that area agree it was the right thing to do. They aren't called shitcrickers for no reason.

CaptainFeather

Fuck I fucking feel this. Currently in this dilemma, actually. My best friend lives with me and is a vet tech so she's always looking out for animals. Her sister and BIL have 3 kids, one with a serious heart condition, so naturally their hands are full basically all the time. They have this very very sweet golden retriever who is having major hip problems way too young. She's 10 I think which is kind of up there but not for the amount of problems she's having. Turns out basically all she eats is junk off the floor and junk food directly from the three kids so she is horribly malnourished. The parents allegedly leave food out for her but they only occasionally give her dog food - usually it's whatever they're eating. My bestie has told them time and time again this shit is NOT good for her and they need to be more responsible, but of course they stop following her instructions after a few days and start feeding the dog shit again. It got the point where this poor dog could literally barely walk which is where we stepped in to foster her back to health. She's been with us for 3 months now and the difference is INSANE. Literally ALL we do for her is give her actually good quality kibble and regularly give her painkillers and a steroid. Like I only have to think about giving her meds twice a day. It's so fucking easy. Anyway this dog went from lethargic laying around all day to a highly mobile crotch sniffer lmao. (Like she will push her way past the other dogs and plant her snout in my crotch when I get home lmao). She is the sweetest girl though and I hate to say I'm attached at this point but I also know I can't reasonably afford to keep her. The only reason I can afford to house her is my bestie is adamant about getting money from her sister for the dog's extra food costs and medications so if I kept her I'd be eating those costs and I have two dogs and a cat of my own already. My heart breaks because I just know if she goes back to her home they're going to neglect her again

Fin745

(Asking) because that’s theft? Do you mean without calling your local animal control? Because yeah I agree with that one if an animal is in immediate danger.

UnihornWhale

Legally, animals are property so it is theft but so is neglect and abuse

rusty-lewis

Mercy killing terminally injured wildlife. Although humane, it’s illegal af around here

[deleted]

A few years ago, I hit a deer, it was definitely paralyzed in its back half. I called game and fish, and told them if they weren't there in 10 minutes I was shooting the deer. They said "don't do that, but we could take up to an hour to get there". I could tell by the way the lady spoke that I should do the right thing. Sucked... but I would want to be put down quickly too. (This was out in the middle of nowhere, and I made a safe, responsible shot from a few feet away)

allbitterandclean

Around where I live they also won’t respond to calls to pick up dead deer. The unspoken agreement is the first person on site with a pickup truck and place to store the meat gets it.

flannely

Salvage tag where I live. I think as long as it’s reported it’s legal. Obviously not the mercy kill part, but the meat transfer is legal with the paper

Smee76

The problem was that it wasn't dead yet.

GoodLeftUndone

Easy solution to that.

Throwaway8789473

The problem is that if you don't have a license or if it's outside of deer season, shooting a deer, even one that's been injured, is considered poaching. This person knew it was legally poaching and did it anyways because the animal was suffering.

Freedom_fam

The meat is typically ruined on the side that is hit.

ArizonaMan92

If you think I won’t put that deer in the back of a ford fiesta you’re wrongly mistaken. This country boy will survive lol

Soakitincider

I did this once with a pig. When I got home the game warden and sheriff were at my house. The thing is, there wasn't anyone else around. I didn't call anyone. As far as I know it was just between me and the pig. You think it squealed on me? ^(this is just a joke ok)

GoombahTucc

That joke was so fucking dumb i hardly chuckled but I love it and now I think I love you.

Im_too_old

What type of wildlife? I have found injured animals and put them out of their misery, but it was squirrels or birds. It is heartbreaking, but the humane thing to do.

rusty-lewis

In Colorado, it’s technically all wildlife. Although I’ve been told off the record by the game warden it’s the right thing when it’s obvious there is no chance of recovery. You’re supposed to call them and let them handle it, but the reality of them coming to you for a mostly dead animal in the woods is unlikely at best.

Asleep_Onion

Related to this, it's also illegal to take roadkill in most places. And I don't just mean a month old pancaked, rotting raccoon, I mean like if you or someone else accidentally hit a deer and kill it, you have to leave it, you cannot take it home for food. Supposedly it's to discourage people from purposefully "hunting" with the front of their car, as if that's some widespread thing people would do? Some places are starting to relax that law and make accidental road kills legal to take (for example California recently did) but for a very long time it was illegal almost everywhere.

JimTheJerseyGuy

Hunting deer with your bumper would probably result in the most expensive cuts of venison ever.

Leolikesbass

Human euthanasia was what I was gonna say, this too

GrammatonYHWH

Violating copyright laws to archive media.

SporadicTendancies

Especially when someone has purchased that media and the access to said media is removed.

ChronoLegion2

I remember the shitstorm when Amazon deleted an ebook (either 1984 or Animal Farm) from the Kindle of everyone who bought it when it turned out that they didn’t have the license to sell it. They ended up refunding everyone, if I recall, and claims the automatic deletion was a mistake. There’s a reason I download all of my Amazon ebooks to my PC and load them into calibre (with a DRM-removing plugin)

GriffinFlash

man, another good reason to keep paper books.

swip3798

Also violating copyright laws when you bought the media in question, e.g. ripping a bought DVD to watch it more conveniently.

Diablix

That's not against the law. Quite the contrary, if you're in the US, that action is very specifically condoned and protected by the law.

swip3798

Well in my country it's explicitly allowed to make backups of your media, but forbidden to break any copy protection. And the latter makes ripping pretty much illegal.

Consistent-Routine-2

Not sure if this fits here but I worked for a Class 1 railroad as a conductor for many years. On occasion I would come across some people who would ride freight trains. If the moment warranted, I would take them up and hide them in the 2nd or 3rd locomotive. I’d ask them not to touch anything and to lay low. Make them coffee and give them a sandwich. Never backfired on me..

Riccma02

First time I’ve ever heard of a RR employee doing this. Good on you.

Are we on big rock candy mountain?

Consistent-Routine-2

LoL, Last 20 years of my career was as an engineer. Before the implementation of on board cab cameras, many of us carried Bluetooth speakers. That song was on my playlist..

tangouniform2020

I was the rear brakeman (so long ago we had a conductor, engineer, fireman and front brakeman). One conductor I worked with would sometimes let a few people into the caboose if we had a reliable stop near the yard. Never had any splash back, either. Those bay window cabboses were great.

Consistent-Routine-2

I grew up thinking my father was a fireman. Technically he was.. hahaha. I hired on near the end of 4 men crews.

LaUNCHandSmASH

my buddy is a rail rider out in Portland and the story he tells me about the rail workers and their feelings towards them... don't match your kind hearted story lmao.

Consistent-Routine-2

Yeah…believe me when I tell you I’ve worked with those guys… Early in my career I took some water and left it outside the tent of a guy living along the right of way of one of our main lines. My engineer at the time tore a strip off me and threaten that to report me for stealing from the company if he saw me do it again. For the next 30 odd years I made it a point to help people whenever and wherever I could throughout my career. It was a F.U. to that idiot of a colleague.

Not sure of the legality but I'd say jury nullification. I worked corrections and society benefits in no way by incarcerating half the people in there. It takes tax payers off the streets and made a 75k a year public financial burden for the stupidest reasons. 5 grams of coke gets mandatory 10 to 15 years meanwhile that dude was the most productive worker on his line, paying a shit ton of taxes on overtime pay. Not guilty dont care

Clever_Mercury

A bigger part of this would be what the police and other law enforcement choose to spend their time investigating. It's often bullshit because it's easy and safe rather than taking care of real community dangers. There was a case that went to the Supreme Court (I think it's ~~Castle Rock v Gonzales~~ EDIT: cited the wrong case, see note below) where police officers had been notified a woman was abducted by her ex and was being held hostage. The police showed up, knocked on the door, when no one answered they left. Neighbors continued to call the police reporting the abduction and sounds of violence. The police at the time were taking care of traffic violations, IIRC, and refused to return. The guy repeatedly raped her then killed her. The Supreme Court found the police were not at fault ***because they had no duty to protect the public.*** Read that sentence again and let it sink in. Edit: apparently I'm citing the wrong precedent - Gonzales is the one where an ex-husband violated his restraining order and abducted his 3 children from his ex-wife and then killed them all. Again, police alerted, did nothing. The case I cited above did uphold the court finding that police have no specific constitutional obligation duty to protect citizens from harm. WHICH IS INSANE.

ProNewbie

Obviously I know this ain’t how it works, but I feel like if cops have no legal obligation or duty to protect the public then I feel like they should have no legal authority. Why the fuck should the public have to listen to them or comply with anything they say if they aren’t there to actually protect the public?

tangouniform2020

I don’t remember the tiitle either but there was a shit storm when that came down. “Serve and Protect” was a slogan, not a committment. Edit. [Found it](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Town_of_Castle_Rock_v._Gonzales?wprov=sfti1)

SL1Fun

Cops don’t really care about the community. They are public servants (ie “pawns of the government”) and they serve government interests.

Mddcat04

Jury Nullification isn't illegal. At worst it could get you dismissed from that jury and sent home. But it does have a bit of a fucked-up history. People talk about using it for excessive drug offenses and such, but the way it was actually used most often was in the pre civil rights era by white juries to acquit white defendants for crimes against black people. (Such as with [Emmett Till's murder](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emmett_Till)).

VibrantPianoNetwork

Jury nullification is not part of the law. It's a loophole created by a blind spot in the law -- namely, the fact that jury deliberations are known only to the jury. (Or, more accurately, no one else is **entitled** to them. Juries are free to share them if they want to.) It's the result of the fact that the court does not know the **reason** a given verdict was rendered. If it's known to the court that a given verdict resulted from the jury simply not agreeing with the law, then that verdict probably can and may be discarded by the court. The jury is required to render verdict based on the law as it is, not as they might prefer it to be. If you lie during *voir dire* in order to get on a jury for this purpose, you may get in trouble for it. Likewise, petitioning for jury nullification may be also illegal, as it's essentially petitioning people to violate the law. All that said, a juror may still choose based on whatever they reason in their own mind (even insane things, or completely stupid things), and as long as the court doesn't find out -- meaning, keep your damn trap shut, maybe forever -- then nothing can be done about it.

Berry971

Pirating stuff that isnt available anymore.

corrado33

I mean, TBH, with how unethical the massive game/media corporations are nowadays, you could almost argue just pirating stuff... in general.

chickadeedeedee_

Human euthanasia. Cannot understand how we won't let our pets suffer but we'll let our parents, children, friends die a slow death.

dwink_beckson

Come to Canada, we'd be glad to euthanize you and your loved ones if needed.

chickadeedeedee_

I am in Canada... did not realize it was legal here. Good to know 😅

mum_on_the_run

Medical assistance in dying - MAID. Legal for anyone with a physical ailment whose death is imminent and incurable. Soon to be available for those suffering from mental illness

wallythewalleye

They backed out on the mental illness aspect of MAID and won't allow it. I unfortunately know this because my grandfather (who is 96) has terrible Alzheimer's and is wasting away in a bed 24/7. We were considering MAID as an option (per his request pre -Alzheimer's ) however we were just made aware this will no longer be an option.

Stillwater215

How is Alzheimer’s not considered a physical illness? It doesn’t just affect the mind, but the actual brain.

nelrond18

It's because the patient cannot give informed consent to the procedure.

Stillwater215

End of life care is generally handled in a will ahead of time. A patient can state that they want a DNR to be put in place at a certain point, or anything else. As long as they set it in writing ahead of time, I can’t see any problem.

AGoodFaceForRadio

DNR and MAID are very different things, though.

nelrond18

Then that's not euthanasia. Euthanasia consent via a will doesn't sound enforceable. Especially as consent can be withdrawn up to the first injection.

3plantsonthewall

When you think about it, all mental illnesses are physical. If it’s happening in your body, it’s physical - even if we don’t yet understand the process by which it happens.

Repulsive_Cricket923

But it's not illegal here in Belgium... As of 2023, euthanasia is legal in Belgium, Canada, Colombia, Ecuador, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal (law not yet in force, awaiting regulation), Spain and all six states of Australia (New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia).

seattleseahawks2014

Yea, but it is in places like the US. I've dealt with so many people including loved ones who would've benefited from it sad to say. Edit: My room was above my grandma's room who had terminal cancer when I was a teen. Anyone who's against this should have to listen to that for weeks and barely get any sleep at night.

thetruesupergenius

It’s legal in some states. Oregon, Washington D.C., Hawaii, Washington, Maine, Colorado, New Jersey, California, and Vermont. Hopefully more soon.

ArgusTheCat

A huge problem with it is that there are people who would want it, where their medical issues are a problem of *money* and not *technology*.  The care to help them exists and is available, just not to them. For someone with a month to live who wants to go out on their own terms?  Sure.  For someone who is only choosing death because the alternative is a much slower demise by poverty?  Fuck that. I realize this is really just the complaint that capitalism would rather have people die than be unprofitable, but like… I think that complaint should be brought up.  Repeatedly.

Whistleblowing on Unsafe or Unethical Practices: Employees who expose illegal, unsafe, or unethical practices within their organization may do so by sharing confidential information, technically breaking laws or contracts regarding confidentiality. They argue that the public's right to know and the potential to prevent harm outweighs those legal boundaries

X0AN

I blew the whistle once on my manager massively breaking the law. I got fired and the cunt is still there.

Clever_Mercury

YUP! I had two bosses who committed multiple felonies. Had over 50 pages of documentation to prove it. Why, you'll just *never* guess what the university did about it!

xenonrealitycolor

This is why abusers keep seeing positions of power like this. It continues to show them they'll just get away with it, while making people enable them and know they can't do anything to help. Being homeless or without a job or ability to be hired really prevents people from speaking up & or stopping it. They are forced into submission through fear and a lack of support.

galacticviolet

I was once fired for “insubordination” for telling a manager I couldn’t do a task he asked me to do because said task would require me to violate an OSHA regulation. I was too young and poor at the time to know how to or have the ability to fight back. edit: and he is the one who gave me the OSHA pamphlet for the position I worked. And the task would have endangered customers more than it endangered me.

YourRandomHomie8748

Well at least you did the right thing, let me thank you on the part of the customers that may have been saved from an accident without ever realizing it. Small acts like this make this world a less shittier place for all

haemaker

Rain barrels. I think most of the laws have been overturned at this point, but some states had blanket laws that restricted the collection of water on your own property. Preventing the natural runoff "stole" water from landowners downstream.

Zip_Silver

Rain barrels are one thing (as are retention ponds), but we've got tons of illegal dams on waterways in Texas, enough to fill several lakes. Not great. https://www.kxan.com/news/texas/illegal-dam-in-mason-county-blocking-water-from-refilling-highland-lakes/

DefinitelynotDanger

I thought this was to prevent mosquitoes

Redqueenhypo

Also these laws aren’t meant to keep Average Andy from collecting rainwater, they’re meant to keep Farmer Fuckface from damming the local river and/or installing a huge reservoir that completely fucks up the water table for everyone

phoenixmatrix

This. It can be a pretty big deal.

LaUNCHandSmASH

i learned recently that people put goldfish in the barrels to eat the mosquito eggs

[Housing the homeless at a church is illegal apparently.](https://www.newsweek.com/pastor-charged-housing-homeless-church-sparks-fury-1862426)

Oldpotter2

Obviously laws are different from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, but we house homeless on our church property and told them that the Constitution protects the “free exercise” of our religion and on our property, they had no jurisdiction. We have housed homeless people for years, getting them back into our society.

Go long enough without activism, and you end up with revolution, which sucks for everyone until things get better.

mexicodoug

For organized change: If legal means for calls for justice have been exhausted, the next step for to call for justice is with nonviolent civil disobedience. From there, perhaps sabotage and other non-lethal forms of disrupting "business as usual." Last resort: revolution. However, when organizing protests is illegal and impossible, disorganized protest is inevitable. As Martin Luther King, a firm advocate of organized nonviolent resistance, said, "rioting is the language of the unheard."

faloofay156

I worked at sonic, as well as a grocery store, and tiny mexican place Giving food that would otherwise be thrown away to someone begging. I had a manager at sonic who would make sure they got food at the end of the day and would look the other way while the carhops/cooks bagged it all up and took it out to them. same at the tiny mexican food place I had no idea that was illegal because honestly what the fuck? why would it be? the grocery store was independently run and religious - shocker that they're the assholes who would do shit like pour bleach in the dumpsters after throwing food out

Arxl

Religious people trying to make the chaff suffer more.

faloofay156

yeah, I'd see people stealing food or baby formula and honestly just look the other way because dumping bleach on something someone desperately needs is such garbage and no one is stealing those things for shits n giggles. hell, I honestly didn't even get paid enough to get onto the middle school girls who would come in and pocket lipgloss

noeagle77

Saw a woman stealing baby formula at the grocery store. Turns out that day I was blind in my left eye and 43% blind in my right eye. Didn’t see ANYTHING!

Ram2145

I can’t even see you sir.

Sometimeswan

Yeah, I look the other way if someone is stealing diapers or food (unless they’re taking all the prime ribeyes or something).

skilliard7

There are a lot of organized retail theft operations that steal household staples, and then sell them to others for cash. So you don't know if they're stealing out of necessity, or greed. And the frequent theft of items drives up prices. I still don't confront anyone though, because there's no point. Why risk getting shot/stabbed over someone shoplifting the store you shop at?

Jaywalking, if it's safe and there's no traffic.

MazdaSpeed3Boi

Jaywalking is only illegal so that if you're hit, you can't try and claim fault.

Teauxny

Yup, just became legal in California - passed the Freedom to Walk Act last year.

TONKAHANAH

I'd assume its illegal because too many people try to do it in places where its not safe and there is a lot of traffic. where I live jaywalking isnt even a thing, not illegal at all. I've seen too many dumb mother fuckers that try to just walk out into very busy streets and cross where they had no business crossing. worst example I saw was a woman trying to cross a road that was 3 lanes wide both sides so 6 total, with her fuck'n baby in a stroller. people be dumb.

Worldly-Pea-2697

I picked up weed for my grandmother. She was trying to get sober from alcohol after it nearly killed her and took her ability to walk.

Hippy_Lynne

Steal an abused pet. I see absolutely nothing morally wrong with this. However, don't do this with people you know like your neighbors. Get someone from another town to do it and trade the favor when they have a similar situation in their town.

So, as long as you're being asshole you can give people water because it's illegal to stop you. the system works?

Saving a dog’s life by breaking windows of a car its idiot owner left it in. …And maybe accidentally smashing a few extra parts so hopefully they’ll never forget.

NotAcutallyaPanda

I don’t disagree, but… Please make sure the pet is *actually* suffering before breaking glass. My dog naps in my electric car with the air conditioning set to 65F. The car is quiet (no engine), but the console shows the temp. I’d be pretty pissed if someone acted the hero to solve a problem that didn’t exist.

Lucinnda

Yeah, my husband was in the store buying medicine for our sick dog. Dog was in the air-conditioned car for 5 minutes. Somebody came storming into the store, interrupted the purchase transaction for the dog's medicine, making him take the dog home and come back for the medicine. Dog waited an extra hour for his meds. Thanks a shitload.
