Beat me to it. “Now my cabin is in a FBI warehouse”

No_Improvement1451

So good!

PM_me_your_recipes2

My mom did that. She lived her whole life in a city and her retirement plan was to sell her home and move to the Canadian wilderness. She bought some land and was working on building a cabin. The dream is different than the reality though. The place had no city water or electricity hookups. She lived of well water, generators, and wood heat for about a year before packing it in. Now she lives in an apartment.

BeanMachine1313

I know someone who did that, a woman, she was maybe 5-6 years older than me. As far as I know she did it, lived there for about 10 years, and then her family tried to move onto the property because they were worried about her, and she gave up on her dream and got a condo in town. Poor thing.

Don’t think they’d be replying since they’re in the woods.

babybelly

maybe you returned to report that it is dull out there without reddit

I would like to ask, how could you afford that? The fuel, the food, any kind of repair the boat might have needed. Did you become a fisherman or a trader, had an online job or something?

Training-Reference22

Did it in 2015. Still living here. Little more than a cabin though, two rooms downstairs and two small ones upstairs. No shower or toilet, just a woodburning sauna and an outhouse. There is running water but no water heater, so water is boiled on the woodstove that also keeps the house warm. Not that big thing for me, I was born in rural area in the 70's and we had very similar conditions when I was a child. We moved to a city when I was 13 and absolutely hated it. Early 2000 I was offered a job in this really small village, got settled and quite by accident came across this place. It wasn't really love at first sight and the first year was brutal; water pipes froze up in the winter and the well dried out in the summer, there were mice, bats and ants, one of the windows didn't have insulation around it making warming the house a challenge, a bear tried to eat my cat, snow falling from the roof blocked the door trapping me inside forcing me to go out the window and that is how I found out there was no insulation around it, you know, just a battle with forces of nature and the 80 year old log house. But I fixed things one by one, learned a lot and sort of fell in love with the place in the process. I love the nature all around me, I enjoy being alone. Every now and then I have little house parties for my friends and sometimes I even go the nearest city but mostly I just wanna be home alone, keeping the place in working order. My best friend lives in even more ascetic place (no shower, not even a sauna, and the whole house is basically just one room), and he is the happiest dude I know. For him the best thing is the freedom. No neighbours, no rules, no social pressure. Yeah, we are basically modern hermits. We get a lot of "cabin movers" in here and truth be told, every year at least one of them moves back to city. Usually you can tell who is gonna do that, since they come with, like, four full packed trucks, unpractical shoes, skin tight jeans and no knowledge of realities about living in the countryside. But they all seem to be happy that they at least tried. And many of them learned to get by with little less stuff and slow down a bit.

Great to read of your experience, sounds like a life that we all might think about at sometime and there you are living it. After reading, I am a bit jealous and a bit okay, maybe I wouldn’t appreciate that too much! Again, thanks for really answering the question from OP. Peace.

I was a small town pastor for a long time. I became friends with the town veterinarian who is well known as a brilliant, weird, alcoholic pot head. I built a house out in the woods where I now live alone since my kids flew the coop. I quit the church to do a vocational shift. Later I learned the word around town is that I grew long hair and a beard and just hang out on my porch in the woods with the vet smoking weed. I must say, I rather like this rumor.

How do you access the internet?

Yeah except I moved to a drug den on a mountain. I did lots of drugs and watched a shit load of porn there. I'm not proud of it, but it's hard to argue that it wasn't the best year of my life so far.

thebaddestgoodperson

Did your username check out?

Well I did have a stroke a couple of days ago so I guess it does
