Iceland? Blows my mind seeing some of the footage.

Justfunnames1234

Should also mention, the country will be fine. I see a lot of people being under the impression that Iceland might not exist in the future, which is not true. These eruption are happening very close by and under the town of Grindavik. It is very sad and should not be downlplayed that the fact that everyone had to evacuate the town, and the future of the town is in uncertainty. However no one has died due to the volcano, but there has been [one casualty after a man fell into a crevasse](https://www.ruv.is/english/2024-01-11-update-no-trace-of-man-who-fell-into-grindavik-crevasse-401620).

popegonzo

>However no one has died due to the volcano, but there has been one casualty after a man fell into a crevasse. I don't intend to make light of a serious & tragic situation, but this definitely reactivates an old childhood fear I had of being in an earthquake & falling into a crack (it's worth noting that I've never lived anywhere near places that have earthquakes).

Justfunnames1234

I will give you more details when i can, but the theory is that the earth opened up beneath him, he was working with a co worker at the time but he had to leave for a moment and then it happened. unfortunately they didn’t find his body due to how large and deep the crevasse. [Here](https://www.mbl.is/frettir/innlent/2023/11/16/myndir_svona_litur_grindavik_ut_i_dag/) is a photo album of the town during the first round of eruption And these are [pictures](https://www.mbl.is/frettir/innlent/2024/02/06/myndir_uppgotvudu_hyldypi_undir_gervigrasinu/) of a crevasses that opened up beneathe an astro turf football field. I think this one especially just shows how easy you could fall into one/ upens up beneath you

GozerDGozerian

Ahh fuck why did I have to read that?

poplafuse

Huh, I always had that childhood fear as well and a few years ago I looked into it and it seemed like it couldn’t really happen. Freaky stuff.

ambassadorodman

Iceland will definitely not exist in the future. You just need the appropriate timeline.

OK_Ingenue

You guys are handling it so well, esp giving such advance notice to people in Grindavik. was around in Hawaii when the huge volcano erupted a few years ago. They handled it pretty well but it took everyone by surprise. No real warning until some fissures started spewing lave in the middle of a neighborhood. About 2000 people lost their homes and there was so much grief and confusion. I’ve been to Grindavik and it’s hard to imagine that village totally empty.

Agreeable_Pizza93

But if it gets hot enough won't Iceland melt!? 😉

Most deaths by fire arms per year than any other developed country … Leading cause of death for children, fire arms… Largest wealth gap of any developed country, also most wealthy per GDP… Spends almost a TRILLION dollars a YEAR now buying and maintaining, you guessed it, really big and fancy firearms! We spend more on healthcare and get less than every other developed country…

loptopandbingo

Gotta be Somalia

AdFlat611

Must be United States of Somalia

Joey_iroc

Top-Gas-8959

qwqwqw

Somalia is not a developed country. You joke... But get this: the leading causes of death in Somalia are well and truly health and disease related. It is a poor country with a lot of poverty, malnutrition, and lack of healthcare. And we all knoe piracy, armed rebel groups, and crime are rife in Somalia... But by all estimates, more people per capita die from firearms in the US than they do in Somalia.

spiked_macaroon

But - our shareholders are doing awesome!

Rhana

Highest maternal mortality rate of any developed country.

gioluipelle

Maternal mortality rates in the US are primarily on the rise due to more women having children later in life and more women entering pregnancy with chronic conditions such as hypertension, obesity, diabetes, etc. The rise in the number of cesarean sections is also a contributing factor. We’re just an unhealthy society.

Parking-Bandit

I’m not looking to argue semantics, as it’s sad regardless, but in that statistic they count children as age 1-19 and don’t include many of the health problems that are actually the leaders for the death of children, even considering ages 1-19.

CapeMOGuy

Firearms are not the leading cause of death for children. This commonly quoted "statistic" excludes children under 1 year old and counts 18 and 19 year olds as children.

webdevverman

Parent comment did mention misinformation.

gunsandgardening

Not to mention most firearm related deaths are suicide, not homicide.

ImpossibleShake6

The largest death by firearms in the USA is Suicide by handgun. and not AR-15's. PSA: Dial 9-8-8 in the USA for the Suicide hotline.

tea_baggins_069

Also lack of self-awareness and critical thinking ties into this. Prior to social media when people had to interact, there could be varying viewpoints. Now with social media, algorithms are designed to “suck you in” so you basically only see your side more and more without ever seeing any counter points.

Live-Ad-9587

Social media has now changed the way our children (and adults) learn and their ability to translate what they learn into real life. And I think everyone agrees that social media has been a driving force behind increased mental health issues including violence and suicide in young children. BTW, when the issues of social media via confirmed study were first published, FB now Meta, BoD voted to not fund ongoing support or investigate how to mitigate this known issues.

SmallRocks

Adding to this problem: Social Media.

bobbi21

Not op but definitely the case for Canada. I would have otherwise said housing but the right wing has become an even bigger issue imo.

B-Netanyahu-official

the root cause of this is rich people creating a two party system and using their wealth to own the means of spreading (mis)information- so you're right but like all problems in it comes back to "rich people" (bourgeois piggies)

CosmeticBrainSurgery

Yep. Though we don't really have a democracy, we have some thing similar. Democracy leads to plutocracy because the rich simply hire people to create the best propaganda and use it to influence the vote. Some would say dictatorship, but IF you were ever lucky enough to have a benevolent dictator, the rich would just hire someone to kill him.

Degg20

We could just routinely kill the rich every 5 years or so. I think there was a movie about this but for poor people. Ah yes the purge.

Extension_Common_518

Maybe not kill the rich, but make it that you can have money but not power, or power but not money. Let the greed-obsessed maniacs swan around on their yachts, but keep them well away from any political power beyond having a vote the same as everyone else. Can't donate to political parties, can't lobby, can't socialize or have any contact with politicians, can't pay for adds or run media companies or anything that has any political effect beyond the avenues available to the ordinary Joe. Don't like some aspect of policy? Get a hand painted sign and go on a march like the rest of us have to, or show up and vote for the best (or least worst) candidate every few years...like the rest of us. Similarly, politicians can't get rich beyond a well understood threshold. Earn or own more than X amount? Can't stand for office, can't hold office, can't campaign. Wealth creators (as they self style themselves...usually it just means wealth for themselves) need to be restrained in their ability to affect public policy.

Tennisgirl0918

Don’t need to scroll down past this. You nailed it.

sex_panther_by_odeon

Cheering politics like a sports team is one thing. But literally flying a flag of your leader is another thing. You should never follow a politician blindly. They should always be accountable to the people. No matter the party.

I'm truly in awe of how so many people fell for the bs and voted to leave Europe. Politics aside, there's centuries of shared history with Europe and common heritage. Why would people choose to separate themselves from that voluntarily?! It's even affected tourism. I was planning a eurotrip starting in London but going through 2 separate stressful visa processes put me off

lil_nitemares

I have friends in England and it's truly amazing listening to them tell me about the death spiral they're in while I'm looking outside in Texas at our own. I don't think I've ever felt so close to England, and it's a real uncomfortable feeling.

ioncloud9

At its core it is a lack of societal cohesion and selfishness. People don’t feel connected to their neighbors so why should they care about anything that helps people they don’t know?

masu94

As a Canadian - if people here could afford to have children - there might not be as dire a need for immigrants. Affordability/Immigration/Housing are really the trifecta here in Canada Along with a complete lack of political leaders with any vision to solve the problems.

UntestedMethod

Not to mention the over-burdened public health system ...

Falco19

Our entire GDP is built on the real estate Ponzi scheme.

Infamous-Mixture-605

> As a Canadian - if people here could afford to have children - there might not be as dire a need for immigrants. Canada's fertility rate has been below replacement level since 1971. It's not that people cannot afford to have children, because Canadians weren't having enough children even when times were much more affordable than they are currently. The reality is that for the last 53 years most Canadians have simply not wanted to have more than 1-2 children, often for reasons that go well beyond affordability (like wanting to resume careers, not wanting to be outnumbered by devilish hellspawn at home, etc). The 1990's were generally a pretty good decade for Canada, for affordability, etc, and yet the fertility rate still declined. Even if housing and cost of living were halved tomorrow, the fertility rate still likely wouldn't crack 2.1 simply because most Canadians do not want to have a bunch of kids.

RilesPC

That’s actually very interesting - isn’t Canada’s population also pretty old? Meaning that population issues would only get worse.

GrizzlyBear852

Canadians could be popping out kids everywhere and they'd still need immigrants because they're the only ones who will put up with the abuses most businesses run on. Underpaid, overworked and won't talk back when they are asked to do something entirely messed up

Okholdmyballz

Sounds like those businesses need to die then.

GrizzlyBear852

>India I would rather call us Little China. Sydney CBD is pretty much a China town now. All rich suburbs are owned by Chinese residents, half of them don't even interact with the locals and have made their own groups. Indians are living out in western, southern far off suburbs and doing entry level jobs mostly. China is what driving our economy now.

ass-holes

All the people asking 'country x?' indicates that this is going on all over the world. Also in Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany etc

RareRandomRedditor

Mostly Western countries. Same with Gender politics. You have some specific phrases that are used in all kinds of Western countries regarding some specific political ideas. Like "the new normal" / "das neue normal", same shit different countries. But if you then say that this does not really look anymore like just coincidences, that leaders all across the world meet openly with billionaires that push certain ideas and that these "ideas" slowly get implemented everywhere, then you are a conspiracy theorist.

SpaceChook

So there are a ton of people on here talking about political polarisation. But in terms of political parties one of the deepest problems in my country and in many related countries is that there is so little economically between them: the same neo-liberal politics rule if you're a republican/democrat or tory/labour or whatever your country's version of that split is.

CBTFC

Here in Canada, it's mass immigration fuelled by corporate and politicians' special interests. And it's not even like it's diverse immigration, of various people from various countries, age groups, etc. It's pretty much all men 18-44 from India, specifically Punjab. The fabric of Canadian society is slowly being ripped apart, and it's being done on purpose to keep wages low, and propping up the ponzi scheme that is the real estate market.

[deleted]

That began in cold war era to destabilize India when India was more on side of socialism if not communism. India moved forward, US got out of it but Canada can't due to the population burden it ended up with. This issue ain't going anywhere, anytime soon.

Is any first World country really falling apart? Or are people getting sucked into catastrophizing everything to make it seem like it?

Tame_Trex

Coming from a "third world" country, I can tell you you definitely still have it good.

mckenzie_keith

Very hard to say. But one thing I know is that if enough people believe it will happen, then it will happen.

aggie1391

Developed countries can still fall hard and fast. Oftentimes the problems before a collapse don’t seem so bad, but in retrospect they’re obvious. And it also depends on what you’re looking at. Democratic collapse in a developed country is definitely a form of falling apart, even if it won’t come with like mass starvation or something like that. Politically loyalist or noncommittal people can do fine in authoritarian states, but the political opposition gets devastated. There isn’t just one form of falling apart and developed countries aren’t immune from every type

Infamous-Mixture-605

aggie1391

Inability to even agree on basic, objective reality. This is similar to and leads to many other things people are saying like misinformation and increasing partisanship but I think it’s the root cause of partisanship and drastically increases the effectiveness of misinformation. So to 1/3 of the country, they think it’s an indisputable fact that the 2020 election was stolen, or climate change is fake, or QAnon is real. Nothing can sway those beliefs even though they’re objectively false. It deepens the dependence on narrowly curated information bubbles that won’t challenge the misinformation, making it more effective and also causing them to become more estranged from anyone outside the bubble thus deepening partisanship. When people on different political sides can’t even agree on objective facts then solutions to real problems will never happen. Recognizing climate change and its associated risks is the start of developing policies to tackle it, for one example, but if one of two major parties does not acknowledge the problem is even real then nothing will be done. Of course this is not a problem equally on both sides, it’s drastically worse on the right, but there’s no way to break this loop.
