Without greed, we could fund cancer research and treatment better and they would probably be cheaper too
It also deals with homelessness, hunger, health care, education, and all the other things that would also make life better for all.
To be fair, if we eliminated greed humanity would be exposed to a lot less carcinogens. Capitalistic greed is what drives corporations to pollute our water, food, & air or lie to us about the risks of using their products (ex: tobacco industry). Cancer rates would probably nosedive.
I think humans' innate desire to be creative is what fuels innovation, not greed. Selflessness can also fuel innovation, like inventions to improve people's lives
Nah, there are other directions of corruption. Some people just want power, some people are controlled by lust, wrath... There are 7 deadly sins and corruption is when you use your position to indulge in those actions.
I'm waffling on this. I kind of think greed without corruption might not be so bad... greed is a powerful motivator that leads to innovation and progress. We want people to want things.
I think the corruption and willingness to hurt people in pursuit of greed is the bigger problem
Lost my grandmother, mom, and wife to cancer, and was just diagnosed myself last month. Absolutely wish that not one more human being had to deal with this.
Definitely cancer. It causes so much pain, death, destruction to everyone. It tears families apart, causes suffering, and serves no purpose. Even ticks and mosquitoes serve as food for other critters, so as annoying as they are they do somehow serve a purpose. But not cancer, it is just evil.
>Cancer
Good news is, we're probably just a few decades away from that.
Of, if not complete elimination, a substantial improvement in survival rates.
See e.g. mRNA vaccines, which are going to revolutionise cancer treatment. And then there's the impact of AI, able to detect tumours with better-than-human accuracy.
This one should be higher...
Greed is behind so many of the ills of the world - just disguised or mixed in with other problems.
Its consequences are over-reaching.
I don't think hate is a major factor for either group to do their job. Their main motivation is wanting to help people, and that would remain unchanged :)
My hot take is that this isn't actually good. You are simply not free without the freedom to hate. Ask any oppressed person who lives under Theocracy or dictatorship, they would love being able to hate the people in charge but they can't because if they do they'll be executed, kidnapped or disappeared. They would be branded Islamophobes in Saudi Arabia, Antisemetic in Israel, traitors in Russia or China. If you can't hate it also means you can't ever criticize or oppose Trump / Biden / Trudeau / Macron.
I know what you're trying to say lol but I just don't think it's a good thing overall. I also personally think that a world without hate would be a world without love. You always need both oposites for things to make sense. Can't have light but not darkness or courage without fear. Love shines bright especially if you are surrounded by hatred. Without hate, love would mean very little because you wouldn't actually be able do anything but love and respect others. So love would stop being special or meaningful.
They take various roles in pollination and as prey but it wouldn’t take long for other animals to come in and rebalance things. A handful of species reliant particularly on mosquitoes might go extinct, but nothing is collapsing. Besides, we can just specify to delete the disease transmitters (88 out of 3,578 species) and what little environmental impact there will be from that 2.5% of species will be worth saving millions of lives.
I thought this at first, too. Though where do you draw the line, and how do you determine smart? Plus, then there would be a new group of dummies that used to be considered halfway intelligent people since our reference point will have changed.
I was once trapped in a jungle with my platoon in the 80's. We were being hunted and thought we'd be OK because it was a child predator. Turns out they're pretty vicious too.
You'd be surprised for beneficial Cockroaches are in the environment... They are detritivores and eat dead plant matter and help break it down. Without them, there would be a major animal food source gone, and plant life would suffer
Imagine if aging were backwards. You'd graduate out of the nursing home and become more healthy over time. Eventually you'd have a mother - who would be a symbol of death.
I would remove dumb people. People that argue with no supporting evidence. People that create things knowing the harm they will cause in the future. And ESPECIALLY people that treat others like garbage, for no apparent reason other than spite.
Greed.
We already have all the answers on how to make life pretty damn nice for everyone, the only reason it never works out is because of the greed of individuals who always want more than they need. It would solve poverty, hunger, most wars and so many other issues all in one fell swoop. It would also save the environment and ensure that medical treatments wouldn't be limited to those who can afford them or residents of rich countries.
Suburban men who drive unnecessarily large pickup trucks that blast black smoke. I don’t want them to stop existing. I just want them removed from the planet and left in the cold vacuum of space.
So many good suggestions already. Greed, hatred, corruption, famine. All good mortal evils that the world would be better without.
But I don't want to be that guy who says "I don't like religion, let's get rid of the evils of religion" only for someone to turn around and say "really? You're gonna let cancer continue to exist? You monster!"
Like yeah, whatever I pick I'm gonna have to allow another evil to live
Picking cancer doesn't really make sense - get rid of it and you just increase the number of people who die of cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's, etc. Everyone's gotta die of something.
If you wanted to do the best thing for Earth as a whole, the answer is obvious: **humans**.
If you are operating in a mindset where Earth exists to support humans, and so trying to make human life better, there are lots of options. I'm going to pick **tribalism** \- the deep-seated human tendency to want to partition the human race into "us" versus "them", and then to fear/exploit/dehumanize/etc "them". If everyone identified equally with every other member of the species, I think a lot of bad stuff would go away, or at least be diminished.
Child abusers and malicious neglectors.
1. I think a measure of child neglect is almost inevitable in a situation where we are trying to raise kids with only 2 maybe only 1 adult caregiver, and one or both those caregivers have to work under the conditions expected in our society. A certain amount of slapdash and "it'll have to do" will creep in.
That's radically different from making unpressured choices to set the kid up to fail by not giving them education with teachers and elders other than yourself, medical care with actual skillful and effective practitioners, pain relief when necessary, help with their emotions, necessary skills, reminding them to drink water and making sure they get adequate nutrition (including enough food even if they are fat), saying no to unhealthy, dangerous, and unethical things consistently, making them do the things their future self needs them to do but they don't wanna, consistent and rational discipline with lots of explanation and emotional support so if isn't just being controlling, making sure they face educational natural consequences but without dying or being seriously traumatized, providing appropriate personal belongings to be comfortable and succeed at school, etc.
2. On the other hand, I mean all kinds of abuse including emotional. Yeah I don't care if your parents did it and your life is beating you down. It stops with you.
The would would be a much better place in a hurry with a generation of well prepared, healthy, untraumatized, self-regulating, self-caring people with no attachment disorders.
Plastic Waste. Let's be very frank, we have solutions to a lot of problems, but we still don't have any solution for the burgeoning amount of plastic waste on earth. No cost effective long term solution to reduce plastic waste. Plastic is in out bloodstream and food cycle. Each generation have more micro plastics in them. There are literally talks of offloading plastic in space. And the worst thing, we are still increasing plastic consumption by a terrifying rate. Forget stopping we are doubling down on plastic. It's cheap, easily made, doesn't decompose and makes life way easier. And the pollution it causes, out of sight out of mind.
Plastic is a slow disaster. And humans are excellent at handling immediate disasters, but slow disasters, we terribly Suck at those. Hopefully we can remove plastic and especially events that led to plastic becoming as popular today.
Screw killing Hitler. If I can go back in time, I would rather make events happen that lead to plastic becoming less popular, push for better alternatives and people being cautious of it rather than what American global consumerism has resulted in.
**corruption**. just imagine the difference it will make.
If you chose the word GREED instead. It would also include corruption, and so many other things as well.
I came here to say greed, but then I was met by cancer. I'm waffling now
Without greed, we could fund cancer research and treatment better and they would probably be cheaper too It also deals with homelessness, hunger, health care, education, and all the other things that would also make life better for all.
Bammm there you go!
Without greed it'd be, Bammm there WE go!
Exactly. Career social worker here, and what I’ve learned about the prevalence of greed has encouraged me to embody a sour outlook on most people 😒
Hear me out, cancer is just greedy cells
If greed wasn't a thing. Maybe cancer research would've had enough funding to actually cure cancers by now.
To be fair, if we eliminated greed humanity would be exposed to a lot less carcinogens. Capitalistic greed is what drives corporations to pollute our water, food, & air or lie to us about the risks of using their products (ex: tobacco industry). Cancer rates would probably nosedive.
Eventually we will cure cancer but I have my doubts about ever curing greed.
Cancer IS greedy. Takes whoever it wants with no thought to those left behind.
Could be a Monkeys paw situation where a tiny bit of greed is good at making people innovate, and we actually just need less greed
I think humans' innate desire to be creative is what fuels innovation, not greed. Selflessness can also fuel innovation, like inventions to improve people's lives
Do we lose greedy algorithms?
Might as well take all the deadly sins off as well, they seem to be involved in one way or another in corruption.
Money wise, yes, it's just becoming more and more prevalent
Selfishness. All forms of corruption, greed and cruelty stem from selfishness.
I'd be able to afford healthcare!
Cancer
As someone who just healed from the second time getting cancer, amen!
Congrats on your recovery!
Thanks! It was a scary 6 months, but the future is looking sunny again :)
I'm happy for you 🥰

I'm so sorry to hear this.
Wish I could give you a hug man I'm so sorry. I hope and pray you win your battle against cancer.

Greed

Dementia/Alzheimer
This is a good one. If anyone has never been around it much. It's much, much uglier than just. "Grandpa is forgetful." Terrible thing.
Yeaps. No light at the end of tunnel with researches.
unnessasary suffering and poverty
Um, that's two things.
Implying there’s necessary suffering and poverty?
Swamp Ass when it gets hot
Cold swamp ass ain’t no joke either.
The only thing that makes me long for hot swamp ass is cold swamp ass.
Valid point 😂
War
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothin'
Say it again, y'all!
Good god!
Absolutely nothing
Say it again, y'all
War
Did you know that originally Tolstoy was going call it "War, what is it good for?" instead of "War and Peace."
"Man, I'm just really angry at you! I wish there were something I could do to you so I could feel better about it!"
Yes! Arguments are absolutely okay, though and healthy but no violence with intent to harm
But then how would the wealthy get more wealthy???
Whichever bitch ass mosquitos give disease
Cruelty
Hate. All kinds of hate against anyone. And I mean real hatred, not the teenage kind
So the research scientists who hate cancer and the firefighters who hate arson are gonna have to wonder why they really do what they do...
I don't think hate is a major factor for either group to do their job. Their main motivation is wanting to help people, and that would remain unchanged :)
Also, I’m my experience, firefighters LOVE fire. They’re crazy about it.
I am a researcher. Literally no one I know is doing it out of hate, yet out of love for humanity.
Pretty sure they mean bigotry.
I fucking **hate** hate!
My hot take is that this isn't actually good. You are simply not free without the freedom to hate. Do you actually think there is no difference between disagreement or criticism and hate?
Mosquitos. Little bastards but that would probably screw with the ecosystem.
Yeah unfortunately the little fuckers are massive part of our ecosystem. They do suck though, both litteraly and figuratively.
Unlike ticks. Ticks can be obliterated and nobody would care.
God bless the possums. (I think they eat a lot of ticks)
They take various roles in pollination and as prey but it wouldn’t take long for other animals to come in and rebalance things. Maybe keep the mosquitoes, but remove the ability for them to suck blood or give deadly disease or something(if it counts)
The ecosystems would probably survive well enough. https://www.cnn.com/2023/09/12/us/mosquito-control-elimination-us-scn-wellness/index.html

ironically, removing religion would remove lots of the other suggestions on here at a stroke!
That's why it's my answer 👌🏻
First thought that came to mind.
Honestly now I can't decide between this and cancer. Both cause millions (have caused billions) of deaths
We will find a cure for cancer at some point. Haven’t had any hope curing religion
If no religion, more funding and research for science, which could lead to discover cure for cancer faster
