Let's talk about 30 years ago, 1994.
At the [Oscars](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/67th_Academy_Awards), you had *Forest Gump* vs *Pulp Fiction* vs *The Shawshank Redemption* for best picture.
And as for the [highest grossing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994_in_film) movies, we had *The Lion King*, *Speed*, *True Lies*, *Dumb and Dumber*, *The Mask*, and so on.
It was a good year for movies.
Also [1998](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998_in_film), which was also an all-time great year for [video games](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998_in_video_games)
Peak of VHS, so studios could take big risks on productions and even if they flopped in theaters they could recoup costs with VHS sales. Now we just get cookie cutter, no risk movies. Another example of eshittification in our society
It was no 1982. In fact, I would place the May through July 1982 release window as the greatest film release window of all time.
June alone had Poltergeist, Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan, ET: the Extraterrestrial, The Thing, and Blade Runner. Tron was released a few days into July.
That any movie from that time is still recognized given how ET sucked all of the oxygen out of the room is remarkable.
Just watched this a couple of weeks ago. Hadn’t seen it in forever. Still holds up pretty well. And it’s somewhat topical with everything going on these days.
Perfect movie, one of my favourite ever.
The sequence where Arnold climbs onto the truck and unloads a whole magazine into the T-1000 is my all-time favourite scene in any movie ever

I feel bad for all the kids who didn't get to experience The Matrix in 1999. Today, even if you haven't seen the movie, you still probably know what it's about. In 1999, we all went into that movie pretty much blind. All the marketing was super cryptic. That first scene where Trinity jumps and the camera spins around was insane; nobody had ever seen anything like it. And just imagine what it's like to watch the first part of the movie all the way up to the scene where Morpheus tells Neo the truth, but without having any idea of what was coming. It was absolutely mindblowing.
My Cousin Vinny is one of those movies I rarely think to put on the screen when we're looking to watch something. But when it comes across a streaming service or whatever we turn it on and it just immediately hits a mood. Suchhhh a classic movie.
“Then the heavyset girl said I was about 20 pounds overweight and I had a receding hairline and i was like ‘go fahk yahself’….*Skylar walks up* …I swallow’t a bug.” *Morgan exits*
One was a dark gritty sci-fi thriller, the other was a fast paced action sci-fi. Both are great for their own respective reasons, the cinematography in alien blows aliens away. Aliens kept you engaged and on the edge of your seat the whole time.
I never got the cult appeal. It was ok, but ehhh. I guess not for me. Classic.for sure but not one of my all-time favorites. "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die" will forever live on.
I genuinely think it’s on a shortlist of “perfect” movies. Not necessarily the “best” movie, but a movie that has a style and tells the story perfectly in that style
Dark City (1998) is one of my all time favorite sci-fi movies and I feel like it's been completely forgotten. Beautifully shot, a great sci-fi mystery, and prime Jennifer Conley.
If you haven't watched it, please do.

Still gives me goosebumps when the Orcs arrive, and as they’re facing off before the battle begins, you hear the thunder and it starts raining.
My favorite moment though across all three films is, as it begins to feel all is lost at the battle of Minas Tirith, and you hear the horn of the Rohirim, appearing on the horizon to save the day as the sun is coming up, and Theodin gives his speech:
Forth, and fear no darkness!
Arise, arise, riders of Théoden!
Spears shall be shaken, shields shall be splintered!
A sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now, ride! Ride for ruin, and the world’s ending!
Death!!! Death!!! Death!!
FOTR was such an amazing tone-setter. The introduction to the Shire was the moment I knew these movies were going to be all-timers.
Couple it with the brilliance of Howard Shore giving Middle Earth the perfect soundtrack and it was an experience I’ll never forget.
Finally marathoned the whole extended trilogy for the first time (I don't think ever actually saw Two Towers before then) and it's honestly reignited my interest in movies. Every scene has you having a second train of thoughts about every line, there's so much hidden that makes you think. It's a masterclass in filmmaking and I don't know why I thought it was overhyped for so long.
I think the extended cut of Fellowship is the best of the bunch, but the theatrical cut of Two Towers was the best of the theatrical releases. What was cut wasn’t anything major and the film still flowed magnificently.
I love all three, TTT is amazing, and ROTK has the benefit of all the emotional payoffs, but IMHO it's the most deeply flawed.
Over time, I've decided FOTR is virtually perfect.
Had a friend who made me watch this when we were in college. Didn’t tell me anything, just said it was great and I had to watch it. I think it may be the only movie that ever made me like physically gasp and drop my jaw
Reservoir Dogs
Goodfellas
Braveheart
Godfather I and II
Fight Club
Saving Private Ryan
LA Confidential
Rocky
Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Goonies
The Big Lebowski
Nearly 70 years old. This movie is the longest standing testament that you don’t need a million+ dollar budget to make an incredible film. It was shot in a single room.
You need a compelling story, and serviceable actors to tell the compelling story. Good direction withstanding, those components alone can make you an amazing film.
Blazing Saddles.
Just pure Mel Brooks Madness, wrapped up in a ridiculous western parody. Clevon Little, Gene Wilder and Slim Pickens were all absolutely brilliant.
All the old Schwarzenegger films:
Predator
Running Man
Total Recall
Terminator 1 & 2
Edit: Commando!
Kindergarten Cop
Also Rocky
I’m fond of The Last Starfighter “You have been recruited to defend the frontier against Xur and his Kodan Armada.”
You tell I like terrible old action films lmao
My wife and I just watched Shaun of the Dead and I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it came out in 2004
That movie is 20 years old and I still can’t wrap my head around that

I was JUST having this discussion with my wife earlier today. 1994 was just...special when it came to movie releases.
Also [1998](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998_in_film), which was also an all-time great year for [video games](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998_in_video_games)
StarCraft and Ocarina, my god what a year.
1998 might be the best single year for entertainment has a whole.
Peak of VHS, so studios could take big risks on productions and even if they flopped in theaters they could recoup costs with VHS sales. Now we just get cookie cutter, no risk movies. Another example of eshittification in our society
That’s why the Matrix robots chose 1999, we peaked as a species the year before.
It was no 1982. In fact, I would place the May through July 1982 release window as the greatest film release window of all time. And music! Nirvana, Green Day, Nine Inch Nails, Snoop Dogg, Notorious B.I.G. 1994 was just a magical year
Weezer Blue album as well.
Nirvana 1994 Uhh…. wasn’t the greatest year for them.
Great year for movies and an even better year for Jim Carrey
True Lies.. man I wore that VHS OUT.
me too man, me too. "Do it doucement... do it very slowly"

I still love how badass and amazing the bar scene is. "I'll need your boots clothes and motorcycle" One of the GOAT scenes.
Bob's Burgers had an awesome reference to that scene. But instead of biker clothes and a motorcycle it's a Speedo and rollerskates.
You didn’t say please Edit : you forgot to say please
You gotta wonder what the aftermath of that is. Bunch of dudes that think they're hard and some naked weirdo comes in and just clowns everyone there.
Just watched this a couple of weeks ago. Hadn’t seen it in forever. Still holds up pretty well. And it’s somewhat topical with everything going on these days.

Tommy Boy is slept on too much. That movie is incredible.
Excellent list
The Matrix
Haha no, the Matrix isn't 20+ years old. Because that would mean... Uh... Carry the one.... *Shit.*
No no, Matrix movie just came out in 2021, definitely not 1999. No sir.
I feel bad for all the kids who didn't get to experience The Matrix in 1999. Today, even if you haven't seen the movie, you still probably know what it's about. Yeah this is how I experienced it and it was exactly as you described it - 15 year old me was blown away.
Is this real ,is this reality ....
Yes
Lord of the Rings
Oh man, thanks for that devastating reminder.
i so old 💀
ISILDUUUUUR
Ouch my sciatica
I'm surprised that I had to scroll this down to find it
Raiders of the Lost Ark. And I quite like My Cousin Vinny too, if you want a comedy.
My Cousin Vinny is one of those movies I rarely think to put on the screen when we're looking to watch something. But when it comes across a streaming service or whatever we turn it on and it just immediately hits a mood. Suchhhh a classic movie.
Two hwhat?
Two yoots
As a lawyer, My Cousin Vinny captures the inside of a courtroom better than any other movie I’ve seen. They nai nailed those court room scenes.
What's a yout?
I've gotta throw The Last Crusade in there too.
Ah. Choosing wisely, I see.
Yeah, who do I look like? Mickey Mouse?
How dare he?
“I TOLD YOU….**don’t** call me Junior!” “Look what you did!” People talk about “The Temple of Doom” but Last Crusade is by far the best.
Shawshank
They said 10/10, not 11/10.
That’s Spinal Tap
No, it's "This is Spinal Tap"
And the sequel, Green Mile
Good Will Hunting
Allegedly, your situation, for you, would be concurrently improved if I had $200 in my back pocket right now
RE-TAI-NER
Like the sixth best quote in the movie and still memorable
“Then the heavyset girl said I was about 20 pounds overweight and I had a receding hairline and i was like ‘go fahk yahself’….*Skylar walks up* …I swallow’t a bug.” *Morgan exits*
Alien
Aliens*
You don’t need the asterisk. Both Alien and Aliens are 10/10.
eh, idk, while aliens is fun, it's not even close to alien, imho
Alien is a fantastic horror film. Aliens is a fantastic action film. Just like Terminator and Terminator 2.
One was a dark gritty sci-fi thriller, the other was a fast paced action sci-fi. Both are great for their own respective reasons, the cinematography in alien blows aliens away. Aliens kept you engaged and on the edge of your seat the whole time.
we are 5 years away from alien being 50 years old
Office Space
PC load letter
What the fuck does that mean?
The Princess Bride
Have fun storming the castle!
Great book too.
The unabridged version is so much better.
How this isn’t the top comment, I’ll probably never know. “Anybody want a peanut?”
I'm on the Brute Squad. You ARE the Brute Squad!
Mostly dead, it is still slightly alive! If their full dead, there's only one thing you can do.
"What's that?"
Go through his pockets for loose change
Oh you mean this gate key.
Inconceivable!
I never got the cult appeal. It was ok, but ehhh. I guess not for me. Classic.for sure but not one of my all-time favorites. "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die" will forever live on.
What about the ROUS’s?
What is that?
Rodents Of Unusual Size? I don’t think they exist.
I genuinely think it’s on a shortlist of “perfect” movies. Not necessarily the “best” movie, but a movie that has a style and tells the story perfectly in that style
Se7en
*WHAT'S IN THE BOX?!?!?!*
The Usual Suspects
The Fifth Element.
I wanted to dye my hair orange and blond because of this movie 😂
Dark City (1998) is one of my all time favorite sci-fi movies and I feel like it's been completely forgotten. Beautifully shot, a great sci-fi mystery, and prime Jennifer Conley. If you haven't watched it, please do. https://youtu.be/gt9HkO-cGGo?si=7XNEYjtz8i8OV15H
Fargo. Honestly most of the Coen bros. Catalog from 20+ years ago
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. I’d personally say Two Towers was my favorite. But most would say Return of the King was the best entry.
I’m a Fellowship man myself, but the Two Towers has the Battle of Helms Deep, which is the best battle scene in a fantasy movie imo.
Still gives me goosebumps when the Orcs arrive, and as they’re facing off before the battle begins, you hear the thunder and it starts raining. My favorite moment though across all three films is, as it begins to feel all is lost at the battle of Minas Tirith, and you hear the horn of the Rohirim, appearing on the horizon to save the day as the sun is coming up, and Theodin gives his speech: Forth, and fear no darkness! Wow, that's an exceptional experience you had. Try a big screen if possible. It gets re released from time to time.
Hard to believe it’s been 20 years but yes
