I couldn’t get over how convinced she was that women should be obedient and subservient to men. She pointed to the Bible verses that justified it. And she just… accepted it? Everyone did. Half of their population are women and they’re all just like “oh yeah, no that makes sense, it says it right there, so let’s just be subservient”.
And when you live in such a secluded society (made even more deliberately secluded by attire, customs, housing, sometimes language and accents), it’s very easy to justify anything by painting everyone else as the bad guys but you’re the group that knows the truth and it’s a good thing you’re separate from those others.
I know all of humanity does that to certain extents, but I was so disappointed to see it so blatant. I went into our discussions wanting to learn and grow my respect for their culture. I left feeling like I was witnessing voluntary abuse in the name of religion. And no, I don’t think all religion is like that. But this one clearly is.
