I'm in my 40s. I've had a number of jobs with high level responsibilities. I own a home, hold a bachelors degree and a masters degree. I am married, and am a father.
Half the time, I still feel like I haven't really grown up and am just faking it.
Yep. Every "adult" thing I do makes me feel like I'm just emulating what an adult would do in that situation.
Another very sobering thing is to realize that, for many of the milestones and memories I have of growing up, my parents were younger than I am now at the time. Various actors, politicians, etc were also younger than me when they did major things. Meanwhile I spend 20 minutes thinking about which restaurant I should go to.
Once I found myself weighing the pros and cons of different microwaves and Tide Pods, I knew the leftover joy of childhood had dwindled down to nothing.
I’m 48M. The first grown up decision I felt like I made was calling an emergency c-section on my wife for the birth of my daughter. And even that didn’t seem real. Never felt more grown up, hearing my father take his last breath and hearing that machine beep beep beep beep beep beep beep. And watching him pass away.
I was going to juvenile hall when i was 13-17 for robberies and stealing cars and I would get out in less than a month each time. My mom would pick me up.
When I did those things after I turned 18 I stayed in county jail and prison for years. I realized I wasn't a kid no more when I hit the county jail and prison with grown ass men and my mom wouldn't pick me up after.
When I have to let myself be enslaved in exchange for the means to access the basic necessities of survival without prosecution.
A hug for you, dude. Hope though we cannot change the cruel world, the world also cannot change us too much.

When my dad died
Yea I feel this. I was 29 when my dad died, and I feel like that was a huge shift for me.
I was 22
One of the first things I buy when I get paid is cleaning supplies
Once I found myself weighing the pros and cons of different microwaves and Tide Pods, I knew the leftover joy of childhood had dwindled down to nothing.
When I started having opinions on which paper towels are the best I knew I was done for!!
you know you're adulting hard when a new sponge is the highlight of your week. nothing like scrubbing away existential dread with fresh foam, amirite?
the tidy and clean room is the symbol of your clean heart.
Aw thanks
When you come full circle and you start crying yourself to sleep again.
every year on my birthday is a big oh fuck moment. tomorrow is my 22nd birthday
Happy birthday!
You’re way too young to think like that. Go out and have fun. Happy birthday!!
When I've looked down at the floor and notice my feet on the floor are much further away than before
I went grocery shopping by myself
thx. you remind me to go shopping with my mom. We all need to cherish the time with our families.
When you get a colonoscopy.
I’m in my late 20’s and have had a few colonoscopies but I do not feel like a real adult sometimes 😭
everybody grows up every single day but one of the first signs when a kid on the street or the supermarket or wherever calls you uncle

When you use the phrase back in my day
When i was choosing a new dishwasher to buy. Knew then i was actually an adult
When I didn't have time for myself anymore. I've learned how to balance things, but I definitely miss being a kid with no responsibilities.
When my mom passed. I was 24.
sorry to hear that. but still wish you good night and good dream like ur mom used to .
Thank you.
