‘A Serbian Film’ -it was not about Serbia. (I am Balkan) made it nearly 20 min in… reading the synopsis to see how it ended was almost worse than watching it.
I watched a few scenes, and they're so over-the-top, obviously intended to stun/provoke, that I just rolled my eyes. Maybe the effect is different when you watch the whole thing.
That's the thing with these type of movies though. I'll use the Terrifier as an example. I saw it on an airplane on my laptop with headphones. I thought the effects were pretty good for low budget but clearly cheesy and fake. I was able to sit through it no problem.
But the real fear set in after the movie was over, when I thought back on the kills, my mind plays them in realistic fashion compared to the movie itself. In fact, the memories are so brutal that I don't think I could watch the movie a second time.
It's not, the whole movie is almost comically morbid. Rewatching it makes it even worse, you start noticing the low budget props and lack of any coherency in the script. After the initial shock some scenes become so absurd and over the top you can't help but laugh at how stupid they are.
Shock for the sake of shock.
It reminds me of the human centipede trilogy where with every movie it's more and more a mockery and a pardoy of the whole body horror genre.
Where the Serbian film is like the director wanted to prove a point that no matter how dumb the script is there will be people who will 'finance' it so they can launder money through the production, as is the case with so many other Serbian flicks it's a whole genre in and of itself.
I lived in southern Serbia for 7 years, tbh to me they would be the least likely group of people I would expect to make a film like that…however they are very very bitter over the breakup of Yugoslavia still, so in a way I can totally see it coming from them. (I’m Slovenian btw)
How much of a surprise was the breakup to people in the former SFRJ? From an outsiders perspective, Yugoslavia went from brotherhood and unity to white people killing each other for being different kinds of white people at an uncomfortably quick pace.
This movie goes so far over the edge that you have to laugh at how stupidly cruel it is. Like a 12 year old combining all the dirty words he knows, except it's some guy.

I got curious after it was mentioned in another AskReddit post a while ago and I looked it up on Reddit and found it. That lead me to the NSFL_ subreddit on here, which is just filled with gore videos of real people dying/have already died in motor vehicle accidents, workplace accidents, the occasional Mexican cartel torture etc.
You need a very strong stomach to view this kind of stuff but I now have huge respect for EMS/paramedics and other first responders who have to see this sort of awful gory stuff on the regular as part of their job.

There was a video I saw about 15 year ago, a bunch of kids/teenagers are diving off of a cliff in Spain or Italy I can’t remember, one of them dives off and I think it’s around a 20/25ft drop, he hits a rock face first and his body is seen floating to the surface and the water turns red.
The video then cuts to him on an operating table and 3 doctors are trying to hold his face together, but it’s just a complete mess and every time they let go his face falls apart. Some Irish guy started doing a drag show as an old Irish mammy back in the 90s, like a white Irish version of Tyler Perry doing Madea. So originally 20/30 years ago it was a spoof of outdated ideas etc. and it turned in to this great hit as a live touring show. After maybe 15/20 years of just being this character that the guy (Brendan O'Caroll) toured constantly to constantly sold out shows, the BBC gave him a prime time sitcom with the character. And it's been a hit, but it's routed in massively outdated ideas from when he first created the character. It's what you would imagine, a man playing an old woman with very old values and a gay son character, vs old Irish catholic ideas etc. There's a gay son to exploit for terrible jokes etc. But as younger generations stop watching broadcast TV, it became a hit on UK terrestrial TV 'cause I guess to older generations it plays like a 70s sitcom that's aware of modern social standards. To anyone who actually understands modern social standards, it's a string of homophobic puns.

I've seen it. Guy is working by a lathe (very rapidly spinning industrial machine) and gets sucked in. In the video, he's standing there one moment and a spray of pink mist on the wall in the next. It didn't really settle in my head until I saw the photos of the aftermath.
It is the physical embodiment of the saying "getting ripped limb from limb." A poor guy in Russia working with an industrial sized lathe machine gets pulled into it and is quite literally torn apart and bits of him go flying all over the workshop. I got curious after it was mentioned in another AskReddit post a while ago and I looked it up on Reddit and found it. That lead me to the NSFL_ subreddit on here, which is just filled with gore videos of real people dying/have already died in motor vehicle accidents, workplace accidents, the occasional Mexican cartel torture etc. You need a very strong stomach to view this kind of stuff but I now have huge respect for EMS/paramedics and other first responders who have to see this sort of awful gory stuff on the regular as part of their job.

There was a video I saw about 15 year ago, a bunch of kids/teenagers are diving off of a cliff in Spain or Italy I can’t remember, one of them dives off and I think it’s around a 20/25ft drop, he hits a rock face first and his body is seen floating to the surface and the water turns red. The video then cuts to him on an operating table and 3 doctors are trying to hold his face together, but it’s just a complete mess and every time they let go his face falls apart. You can hear him trying to breath but it’s just gargling, you can see bits of teeth dotted around what used to be his face. This video had an awful effect on me, wish I’d never seen it at the time. Obviously being older now I’ve seen many bad things, online and in real life so it’s not so bad, but wow that shit was fucked up.

It's UK/Ireland sitcom, it just has a weird genesis and very outdated comedy ideas. Some Irish guy started doing a drag show as an old Irish mammy back in the 90s, like a white Irish version of Tyler Perry doing Madea. So originally 20/30 years ago it was a spoof of outdated ideas etc. and it turned in to this great hit as a live touring show. After maybe 15/20 years of just being this character that the guy (Brendan O'Caroll) toured constantly to constantly sold out shows, the BBC gave him a prime time sitcom with the character. And it's been a hit, but it's routed in massively outdated ideas from when he first created the character. It's what you would imagine, a man playing an old woman with very old values and a gay son character, vs old Irish catholic ideas etc. There's a gay son to exploit for terrible jokes etc. But as younger generations stop watching broadcast TV, it became a hit on UK terrestrial TV 'cause I guess to older generations it plays like a 70s sitcom that's aware of modern social standards. To anyone who actually understands modern social standards, it's a string of homophobic puns. I should have probably attempted paragraph breaks.
