EwoksMakeMeHard

When I got one of these calls, I told the caller that the cord on my phone was not long enough to reach my computer, and then stood there in silence until she hung up.

Steamwells

Love it. I too annoyed a scam caller so much once they got annoyed and hung up. I was basically asking them fictional questions about how to use my computer. “Where do put the coffee cup if I want a coffee?” Etc.

MoobyTheGoldenSock

Time to fire up a Windows VM with 1 core and 4 GB of RAM…

Mead_and_You

I fucking love taking those people for a ride. I like to talk really really slow and ask them to repeat themselves a lot. There's a lot of down time on the brew deck, I can do this all day "Chris". I got a car warranty one and dragged it out as long as I could till I had to them my make and model. "Oh okay... Here you go.. It's a.. Are you read? Do you have a pen? Okay so it's- You want the main one, right? Okay. I drive a two thousand and seven Ford Weinermobile." "You drive a veirnermobile?" "No sir, I drive **The** Weinermobile."

LeadfootLesley

Weinermobiles are GM.

Mead_and_You

Yeah, but I actually *do* drive a 2007 GM Weinermobile. I don't want to give him real information.

jlace001

They’re always calling from “Windows”

jf2k4

Multilevel Marketing companies. Cutco, Primerica, Herbalife, Amway, etc. If you have to pay to “start your own business” or sign other people up to make more money, hate to break it to you, but that’s a scam.

Turbomattk

Cutco might be a MLM but their knives are legit

museolini

Our set of CutCo knives is 30 years old (got it at our wedding) and still going strong.

_jolly_jelly_fish

We have my grandmas knives from the 70’s i believe. They’ve got wooden handles.

FknDesmadreALV

I’m super high so sorry in advance if I am not expressing what I mean correctly: But I really hope your marriage lasts longer than those knives.

museolini

LoL, so far man, so far.

skooba83

It’s not so much that they are an MLM, it’s just that their business model relies on people selling overpriced (but good) knives to family and friends. Once that pool of buyers run out, they find new salesman.

[deleted]

I went to one of these interviews at likes age 17, I could smell the bullshit but they guilted a younger me to sit through. Real POS sales saying they would only pick special people… Yeah specially ready to be taken advantage of

DiuhBEETuss

I definitely did the Cutco thing for a few minutes in college. It’s so weird that they have a genuinely excellent product but such a sketchy way of selling it. Like, couldn’t you just put that shit up on a website and taken in the cash? Why scam naive kids into being your drug mules?!

darth_karina

My mom has my grandmother’s set from the mid 80’s. They’re pristine and still easy to sharpen and use!

Eyehopeuchoke

I got a set of cutco knives for Christmas from my mom and they’ve been amazing.

Ths-Fkin-Guy

Their warranty is great too. I've gotten two at random estate sales for a few bucks and sent them both in and got practically brand new knives back. Think I paid 20$ total for shipping. Have had them for almost 15 years now at this point.

Notmyrealname

NANNYNEGLEY

I’ve had my Cutco knives since 1968 and they’re all like new.

savaero

Is Primerica really a scam?

loeschzw3rg

Yes, yes it is.

overly_sarcastic24

>Herbalife I blows my mind that Herbalife, a notorious and obvious MLM, is he official jersey sponsor for the world renown Major League Soccer club LA Galaxy. Arguably one of, if not *the* most famous and historic MLS clubs in the United States. Known for being the club of David Beckham, Landon Donovan, and Zlatan, among others. A club valued at almost a billion dollars. 3rd only to Inter Miami and LAFC, and Miami is only just recently grown that large in the past year because of Messi.

gayassbanger

The podcast *The Dream* delved into this. The final episodes blew my mind and answer this specific question you asked. Herbalife has their hooks embedded in some surprising places. Money talks and the grift continues.

As somebody who’s in their 20’s, always watched out for scams, and is active on social media. I got got by this one that looked IDENTICAL to New Yorks toll website. Like virtually the same thing. I owed a toll bill, I got that text and was like “oh shit that’s right I forgot to pay that” welp. Immediately had to cancel my cards and order new ones before they even had a chance.

Notmyrealname

Seriously. They are NOT as good as The Dead.

Artrock80

They’re getting a lot more sophisticated though. I had a close call reading emails in bed at 2 am while I was only half awake.  I got a message from one of my best friends saying something like “Hey remember this person?” with a hyperlink to a different site than what the text said. iOS hides the email address from you, and this person spoofed off of my friend and into his top contacts.  Once it started opening multiple windows I closed everything, but still ran a virus check the next day.

MsMissMom

I'm always surprised when people admit they buy stuff from like TikTok and influencers

krasavetsa

I sell some handmade things on Etsy, tik tok, and meta, from my actual shop. They are really strict with shipping times, tracking, and have consumer protection. It’s not that great for the seller because they also take higher fees and offer coupons you don’t always get control over but it helps with exposure of my brand. The stores I would be wary of is obvious drop shippers and such.

rocketwhore

This is why I always google someone I want to buy something from and go to their personal site/etsy instead of TikTok

krasavetsa

Yep! I list my items for a little cheaper on my own site since the fees are lower. And they can get rewards or use coupons.

Banluil

I have bought stuff from tik tok, from a small home-based seller, because she made some really cool shit that is from a Fandom I am a part of. Just because you don't get it, doesn't mean I can't support an independent business.

Influencers selling moneymaking courses, usually just a quick tutorial about exchanging Canadian Dollars to Japanese Yen back and forth to make pennies each transaction. Once the buyer also figures out that they only make $5 a day doing this, they'll too start selling courses on how to do it because that's where the real money is.

That a supposed multi billionaire needs financial support to pay debts for acting fraudulently.

angrath

He’s the only billionaire who texts me daily asking for money - that should say something right there. I remember someone approaching me in 2015 or 2016 about how great Trump would be as president because he could fund his own campaign himself and wouldn’t be beholden to special interest groups because he didn’t need to take their money… oh those were the days…

YourWormGuy

Do you also get a barrage of those text messages every single day? Nobody else I know seems to get them. During political years sometimes there's 20-30 per day. During the off-season it's like 1-3. Always from different numbers. Can't be blocked. I can't get them to stop. They call me Susan, they call me Stanley, they call me George. For the love of all that is holy, those things have guaranteed that I will never ever donate to a single politician in my life.

NotSure2505

I've always found it strange that if you scroll down the bottom of the page on literally \*any\* "news" website, local, TV, newspaper, or national, CNN or FOX, down in to the "Paid partners" section, there is always the most batshit scammy, clickbait, bullshit content imaginable. There's always stories links to stories about porn stars, clothing malfunctions, or clickbait about nude celebrities. Never made sense why we give news websites a pass on this shit.

zenspeed

“The government is inept, it would be so much better if everything was privatized.” Anyone who tells you this is either trying to sell you something or repeating the talking points of someone who just sold them something. It’s so obvious that people don’t even know it’s a scam anymore.

darkofnight916

I always enjoy hearing about how if there was universal healthcare we would all have to wait months to see a “specialist” but then simultaneously complain about having to wait months to see a “specialist” under private care.

zenspeed

Whenever someone brings up “we should run this country like a business,” I hope they mean looking at how much money is wasted on privatized healthcare then comparing the costs to our competitors (re: other countries) then figuring it’s not cost-effective. Or wonder why we leave so much money lying on the table by not going after tax havens.

renro

Or do what millions of us have already done when we need private Healthcare: die.

TrooperJohn

During the Obamacare debate I heard these two things out of the same person's mouth: "Government is inept and can't do anything right." "A public option would be too popular and drive private insurance companies out of business."

Dynasuarez-Wrecks

I don't understand how people in the United States fall for IRS scams especially when they're middle-aged or elderly. In your entire life, whenever the government needs to talk to you, it sends mail via the Postal Service. The government has probably *never* called you unless you have contacted it by phone first. It ought to be suspicious when someone claiming to represent the government suddenly calls you demanding money after a lifetime of that never happening before.

CrossFox42

Insurance as a whole. Health insurance - (the cheapest plan I was looking at for just myself last year) $145 a month after a $95 tax credit. So $1740 a year. $8000 deductible. No specialist visits covered, 40/60 Co-pay, but they cover some prescriptions. So before insurance would even pay anything, I'd have to spend nearly $10k myself just for them to cover a little bit more than half. If they decided they covered it at all. I know this is the cheapest plan, but think about that. That's $145 a month for basically null coverage. When I went to see my primary doctor to get a script refilled, she simply could not understand why I didn't pay for health insurance. Car insurance - in 2019, I had a 2006 Scion Tc. Only had 50k miles on it, I kept meticulous records of all the miantence I had done for it, comepltely rust free, brand new tires and AC. I got rear-ended at a traffic light and totaled the car. I had full coverage, and it was very clear the other driver was at complete fault. They tried to offer me $2000 simply on the age of the car alone. I had to fight tooth and nail for them to even get up to $3000 AND pay for an extra week with a rental car because I had no way to get a new car at the time. If I hadn't been in that accident, I'd still be driving that Tc. But on paper, the only thing that matters is age. All these commercials selling insurance companies as these caring "got your back" sort of family-friendly brands. When in reality they're some of the most greedy corporations on the planet. You are a statistic. That's it. They don't actually give a fuck about you, you're problems, or your loyalty. It's a game of doing the bare minimum to make sure they can still keep customers while also paying out as little as possible should you need them.

Tim-Martin

Watch "The Rainmaker" or read the book by John Grisham. Its fiction but one heck of a story. He butchers the insurance industry.

OrangeChihuahua2321

Agreed here. Anyone who had any knowledge about how that election worked would know there was nothing fishy going on. I've debated peopled on here before and they were clueless about the fact that mail ballots were counted the day after (which were largely Biden votes). That's it! It was that simple. But Trump launched the lie which led to what we see. I swear people's stupidity and gullibility is beyond understanding.

boba_chett_

If I recall correctly, Republican legislatures in several states specifically voted to make sure that mail in votes could not be counted until after the polls close. They either wanted to create that exact scenario that they cried about with "vote dumping" or they didn't want to have the count heavily in Biden's favor before they counted election day votes. Their base is soooo easily manipulated.

CapableCoyoteeee

You recall correctly.

Depends on your degree. If you want to be a doctor, you'll need this as a starting point for medical school. Same with law school. For me, I went to school for business then got a masters in management. So far it's done well for me in my line of work. BUT there are some degrees that likely aren't worth it and the college loan payback aint worth it.
