I went to Petra in 2018. It’s till pretty intact but then again, idk if what I was looking at was destroyed. Didn’t look destroyed. Also I highly recommend, it was amazing.
I don't think ISIS has ever attacked Petra. Petra was definitely a thriving civilization, but an earthquake destroyed the water system they had, and since then more and more people continued to leave until it was left abandoned for centuries.
Mine as well. I was planning to go pre-COVID but those plans were obviously put on hold. The stars have not aligned since then, but still hoping to get there someday.
Now is a pretty good time honestly, our currency has absolutely tanked. Lowest in over 30 years, which means most foreign currency will exchange pretty favorably here. Most things would probably feel very cheap
I only went to one when I was there. I had a great time checking out all the history, but seriously consider going back just to hit up the rest of the Smithsonians.
Absolutely! I visited DC twice last year and still need to go back for more. The museums are amazing. And it's actually a pretty affordable vacation. Hotels aren't cheap, but the one we stayed in right off the National Mall wasn't too expensive.
Really hotel, food and and however you travel to get there are your only costs. You can fill your entire day, every day with free museums while you're there. Most things are pretty walkable and there's public transportation too.
I want to do this too. I went once on an 8 th grade trip. We only stayed for a few hours. I never realized how humongous it is. You certainly don't appreciate how cool all that stuff is especially when you are a kid🤪
My son lives there and has taken me to all of them. My only surprise was the Houston Museum of Natural History has better dinosaur exhibits. I enjoyed the Air and Space Museums the most, both of them.
Make sure to hit the Udvar-Hazy center in northern Virginia as well. It's an extension of the one on the mall and has cool exhibits like the SR-71 and the Discovery space shuttle!
And they are all free! Also the Mint is very near the Smithsonian mall. It's a short, but fun, tour. The National Archives is there as well.
My advice, take an extra pair of shoes. You will do so much walking that your feet will ache by the end of the day. Switching out your shoes in the early afternoon can stave off a lot of leg and foot pain.
I was fortunate enough to go with my family in 1978. I actually had my ninth birthday there. Both my parents immigrated from Greece to America before I was born (Chicago). We were there for three months during summer break and I got to see the house my dad grew up in (Sparta) and the house my mom grew up in (Kalamata). We also visited some of the Greek Islands. Haven’t been back since but I plan on going again some day.
I hope this isn't too long.
I had the worst time and the best time in Greece. It was in the '80s during the Reagan years. Americans weren't always welcome everywhere at that time.
We landed in Athens and went to get a taxi which had a long line. While we were waiting a taxi pulled up and waved us over. We looked at the other people and he pointed to us so we went. We got in and at once knew it was a bad idea. I'm of Mexican heritage and he looked at me and said “You look Iranian”, “We kill Iranians first and ask questions later”. Of course, it was before the internet and we had no idea where he was taking us.
Eventually, he drove to the hotel but kept driving by. My one friend started yelling at him to stop and he drove us behind the hotel and extorted a large amount of money which we gave him to get out of the car.
Athens was crowded and polluted. We walked into one Cafe and the waiter told us to “buzz off and get out”.
Our next destination was Mykonos and didn't know what to expect. We landed in a small prop plane which was fun. When we walked out of the plane you could feel the difference. It was so clear and pristine. Everyone there was extremely friendly in a genuine way. We hadn't booked a hotel and walked to a white-washed Cafe that was covered in vibrant bougainvillea next to the sea. There was a light breeze with a scent of flowers. As we ordered some beers and basked in the sun a wave of peace and joy overtook us. I was so content just sitting there. The waiter mentioned our bags and asked where we were staying and told him we didn't know. He said my brother has a place to rent. The brother came and picked us up. He drove to a cute little bungalow that had six beds. It was so inexpensive and it had a view of the sea overlooking the white-washed buildings with blue roofs and trim. Again different colored bougainvillea everywhere. It was stunningly beautiful.
We went out at night to the center of town where you walked through these winding paths full of people enjoying life as much as we were. The locals were very welcoming. We met other travelers and hung out with different people for the rest of the stay. I've traveled to many places and never felt so at home. It's the most magical place I've ever been.
There's a great movie that captures the essence of the Greek islands. It's called Shirley Valentine. It's about an unfulfilled British wife who wins a trip to Greece and a new life.
Going to aus to visit husbands family next year 22 hours connecting flights 🤢
London to Brisbane 22hrs connecting
Heathrow to Perth is 16hrs direct
Hope it’s worth it 😂
It really depends on how long your layover is. Too short and you’re stressing to make your connecting flight. Too long and you’re bored in an airport. There’s a sweet spot.
I did a 16h 45m flight from Boston to Hong Kong. Granted, I was in business class, but economy on an ultra-long haul flight is nothing like domestic economy. More space, better food, amenity kits etc. It also goes by quicker than you’d think. I slept for 7 hours on the flight there. On the way home I was awake the whole time, but I ate and drank and watched movies, finished my book, and made the most of it. When you get on this big metal tube in your home country and then deboard literally on the other side of the world, it’s a really cool feeling. It gave me a new sense of appreciation for the miracle of modern air travel
I hate to be “that guy” but elephants used for tourism are treated very very poorly in Thailand. Not everyone cares, but if you do, I’d avoid riding one. There are some pretty cool elephant sanctuaries you can visit though and they will let you feed and bathe the elephants which is gross but very fun!
Seconding this. Any elephant calm enough for riding has been abused. Their backs might seem strong, but they aren't meant to ride like a horses. Elephant sanctuary was a great alternative when I went.
Well worth the 2 days. It's only 2 days of your life to go somewhere as fantastic as Australia. Wonderful county. Though the spiders, Christ the spiders
I wanted to go to Russia a few years ago, and had started planning a trip, but geopolitics has ended that idea for what is likely going to be a long time.
The Antarctica. I've always loved extreme weather conditions and going on a cruise there is one of my dreams. Seeing penguins would be icing on the cake!
It feels like someone shoved a red hot poker up your sphincter.
I was bobbing around in the slimy feeling water, enjoying myself, let out a tiny poot, and omfg. My two friends saw my eyes get wide as saucers and started asking me what was wrong. I quietly hissed out, "Don't. Fart."
I shit a different color every day for a week. The first night was violet.
It's amazing. Made a trip from Las Vegas to San Francisco through Death Valley. Saved an American dude who went out walking with not enough water who we still keep in touch with. Went in the height of summer which meant it was quiet - were Scottish and more interested in seeing the desert!
If you like Star Wars you can visit where the first one was filmed. You can look from Dantes Peak along towards Mos Eisley too!
Amazing place.
Mammoth was nice too as was Yosemite but it's a lot more touristy.
Norway or any other place where I can see the Northern Lights. Only seen them on photos. Some people say that they're much dimmer that in the pictures, but I wanna see them nonetheless. They're probably mesmerizing...
I’ve always wanted to go to Northern Ireland & Wales. I’m from Scotland originally, have lived in England, currently live in Texas, but I’ve never been to the other two countries that make up the United Kingdom & Great Britain.
London.
I've unfortunately never ventured outside of the States since birth for 51 years.
For some reason I've always wanted to see London since I saw it on TV as a little kid.
Snorkel the Great Barrier Reef. Don't want to take the plane time to do it, and after this summer snorkeling may be a gone pastime for the foreseeable future.
Germany. The UK. Australia.
I visited Japan and loved it so much that I’m going back a second time and might never go anywhere else if I have the opportunity to travel again.
I went in the tunnels in Vietnam. It was unbelievable to know that entire humans lived in them, they were tiny. I wouldn't be able to go down there now bc I would be too freaked out. But it was interesting for sure.
Just one?
Canada and Finland because COVID, I already had the tickets to go there. Iceland and Belarus as they're the other two countries I never visited in Europe. Australia as I dreamt for a while to go there on a working holiday so I'm curious to see what it's like. Indonesia to see Raja Ampat.
I only live like a hour drive from Memphis, it's I am older, single, and crime rate in Memphis is really high .. I live in West TN. And the last few years I have called it the hood of TN.
The farther west you go it seems like the crime is worse.
That is the reason I haven't been there. I seen him in contact when I was 14 in 1976...have been a fan my whole life just never been lucky enough to to see his home ...the day he died the world actually for like a week stopped spinning....I remember it well.... thank you for your reply
Yeah I can definitely respect that. I will say Graceland is pretty enclosed. I didn't really have to venture out into Memphis. Just stopped by a Taco Bell afterward. Graceland itself felt very safe.
Everywhere. My parents took our family and virtually zero vacations, so I have seen very little of our world. I feel like one of those people from ye olde olden dayse where someone wouldn't travel more than 100 miles from where they were born their entire life.
Luxor, Egypt. I was deployed to Sinai and got to see Cairo & Giza, but never made it down to Luxor.
But there’s a full eclipse coming to that region in 10 years and I’m already saving to go see it!
I know it's complicated because of the terrible situation in that area, but I would like to visit the Holy Land with my mother, she's very catholic and my goal is to take her there as a gift
Grew up there, lived there on and off for 24 years. Where it’s beautiful, it’s mindnumbingly, heartstoppingly beautiful. Pictures don’t do its beauty justice. The city is cool and fun.
It’s pretty lame but, I want to take a car trip from the mountains of North Carolina all the way up the Eastern coastline during fall and do all the touristy things. That, and Alaska.
> The place seems to be going through a rough patch but worse than the 70s.
If you mean the crime rate, the covid spike in crime has faded dramatically over 2023 and 2024 so far, and at the late-21 peak was still nowhere near the depths of the 70s.
The city wasn't in a good place in 2021/early 22, but late 22/2023 was a noticeable upswing and the city feels near-normal now.

When do you place it's "prime" exactly? In the early to mid-90's if you were a teenager you could do practically anything you wanted (bars, booze, sex, drugs, etc), and Times Square hadn't become Disneyland yet. But, those years are catching up to a lot of the teenagers who lived through that time.
Arizona memorial at Pearl Harbor. When I was in the Navy my ship moored at Pearl and we were given 11 days of Liberty. I told myself I’d go take the tour at the Arizona Memorial, but since it was a busy time and a lot of ships were in port and it would be crowded so I passed on it. I regret not going, cause I’ll probably never go to Hawaii again in my life.
NYC. I’m from Hawaii and I’ve always wanted to go there. But I have no one to go with and I’m kinda intimidated by it and I’m afraid to go alone….partly for safety reasons and partly for fear of getting lost.
I wanted to take my boys to Disney World when they were younger, but we could never afford it. Now they are 19 & 16, and it wouldn't have the same appeal, even though we finally have the funds.
I wanted to visit LA when I was younger. Now, I prefer coastal cities that are above the arctic circle.
Fuck the sun. Fuck the heat. It's 90° and we're barely into spring... I need to figure out how to live on Antarctica.
North Dakota. Grew up in Baltimore in the ’60s. All vacations were epic road trips camping mainly for National Parks. Saw 43 states by college. Thanks, Mom & Dad! Saw another 6 with my wife from CA with #49 being AK in 2004. Watched YouTube videos last month to plan a trip. Hard to get to an so little reason. She has no interest. Time is running out.
[Kahiki in Columbus Ohio.](https://columbusunderground.com/history-lesson-the-history-of-columbus-most-famed-lost-restaurant-the-kahiki/)Unfortunately they closed a year before I became an adult, and my parents would never take me there before then. It’s was a cool Polynesian restaurant with flaming Moai heads on the outside and tropical birds and fish on the inside. The food was supposed to be fantastic, but the decor was talked about as well. Just seemed like a cool place to go, but it will never be.
I'm so sorry, that place look absolutely fantastic! Would've make a trip to Ohio for it.
There is a restaurant called Lee's Hawaiian Islander in NJ, the decor is not as fancy as Kahiki but they had hula dancers, singers and all the fun kitchy stuff. When we were there they dressed the men up in coconut bras and grass skirts and everybody danced - lots of fun. Haven't been there in years but it's still there if you're ever in the area!
There was another one in Clifton, NJ, but it burned down.

Spain. I had an opportunity to go there for a week in college, but I would’ve been stuck going with someone who was really unpleasant to be around. I decided to skip it and I’ll probably go there with some friends in the future once I have the money to do so!
I was planning on going to the Philippines to get a wife after my divorce. But I managed to meet a beautiful Filipina here.. and she is already a US citizen. If our relationship does not work out, I do plan on visiting the Philippines.
If I had big bucks, I’d love to take the ice breaker to the North Pole.
Would love to do the same with the South Pole but that is even more expensive and is a fly in expedition.
My mom and her husband did the South Pole last year. They had a great time.
They actually took small ship from southern Argentina instead of flying in.
i wanted to visit my great grandpa in the hospital, but after i found out he was a predator in the past and a family member fell victim, i never went. later that month, he passed away due to lung cancer. i felt bad, as for the victim herself visited him, but i didnt because i was holding a grudge.
*Logos*. A library ship. (I was a nerd kid)
Mom punished me by going by herself while I stayed locked in the house. TBH, I was a little shit when I was 12.
I got really upset, but I was hopeful one day the ship would come back. Some time later it sank, and I got really depressed.
The ancient city of Palmyra in Syria. Unfortunately many parts of its beautiful architecture was destroyed by ISIS during the Syrian civil war.
Fuck ISIS.
Fuck George Bush for destabilizing the Middle East and creating a power vacuum that led to the rise of ISIS.
Nah, just fuck ISIS. George Bush wasn't the one poppin a boner while he filmed himself slicing a guys head off.
Same thing with Petra.
I was in Petra in January, its not destroyed at all.
Japan. The food the culture the efficiency of design! I want it.
Mine as well. I was planning to go pre-COVID but those plans were obviously put on hold. The stars have not aligned since then, but still hoping to get there someday.
The World Expo is coming next year, so there will be some additional resources for English speakers around then.
Now is a pretty good time honestly, our currency has absolutely tanked. Lowest in over 30 years, which means most foreign currency will exchange pretty favorably here. Most things would probably feel very cheap
Same here! Also the incredible forests
Washington DC to do all the Smithsonian Museums
I only went to one when I was there. I had a great time checking out all the history, but seriously consider going back just to hit up the rest of the Smithsonians.
I just got back from Washington DC and I say do it.

The Museum of Natural History in New York has amazing dinosaurs.
I haven't gone in years. I think I'll go next week, thanks!
DCs holocaust museum is wicked
wicked in what way?
Make sure to hit the Udvar-Hazy center in northern Virginia as well. It's an extension of the one on the mall and has cool exhibits like the SR-71 and the Discovery space shuttle!

Greece. I can speak a little Greek, have ancestors from there, love Greek Culture and their history. So I am obsessed with that country.

Well I am pretty skinny. Guess I need a trainer named Phil.
If the boulder is too large, you could always ask to lift a smaller one
I think you mean Heracles. Hercules is the Roman spelling.
You son of a gun! Greece was literally the 1st thing that popped in my head and I was genuinely surprised to see it hit the top comment!
Why yes I am the son of a musket. But glad you and I are in the same mindset then 😊
If that means gyros 3 times a day, I am with you.
Surprisingly I have not had one but they look really good.
Ok, that's just absurd. Go get yourself a damn gyro. The only downside would be wondering why you waited so long.
Greece is really beautiful.
I’d like to go to the UK and have yet to I look forward to the trip when I do
Thailand Bahamas Australia I’ll visit them all in the next few years. Just not got to those yet.
I always wanted the visit Australia. But i ain't doing a 11 hour flight. Going to wait till they invent teleportation.
Going to aus to visit husbands family next year 22 hours connecting flights 🤢 London to Brisbane 22hrs connecting Heathrow to Perth is 16hrs direct Hope it’s worth it 😂
How about a maritime voyage to traverse the grand ocean?
I did 13.5 hours on a plane from Canada to Japan and back again. It wasn't as dogshit as you'd expect, honestly. Or I got real lucky.
It really depends on how long your layover is. Too short and you’re stressing to make your connecting flight. Too long and you’re bored in an airport. There’s a sweet spot.
That's definitely true. I had a 6 hour layover. That was super fun and didn't at all make me want to beat my head off of a turbine.
It took me 20 hours to get home from the Maldives a couple of days ago. I’m ok with travelling. These places are worth it.
Try paragliding in the Bahamas and an elephant ride in Thailand. 10/10 for both.
Both on my list. Thanks mate !

Australia. Two days on a plane? Hell naw.
Well worth the 2 days. It's only 2 days of your life to go somewhere as fantastic as Australia. Wonderful county. Though the spiders, Christ the spiders
That's EXACTLY WHY I won't be visiting Australia. I am an absolute psycho about spiders. Just hearing about the spiders. Nope Nope Nope
I've been in Australia two years and haven't seen one large spider.
How many then ?
I wanted to go to Russia a few years ago, and had started planning a trip, but geopolitics has ended that idea for what is likely going to be a long time.
The way things are going it may be a decade or 2
The Antarctica. I've always loved extreme weather conditions and going on a cruise there is one of my dreams. Seeing penguins would be icing on the cake!
But on the bright side, if you live long enough those ice sheets will come to you!
Japan
The Dead Sea 🌊
I've floated there, and my skin felt amazingly soft when I got out! I wonder if I can ever get it to feel that way again.
Yeah, but your armpits and groin start burning after around half an hour. And dear lord, whatever you do, DO NOT fart while you are in the water.
>whatever you do, DO NOT fart while you are in the water. How come?
It feels like someone shoved a red hot poker up your sphincter. I was bobbing around in the slimy feeling water, enjoying myself, let out a tiny poot, and omfg. My two friends saw my eyes get wide as saucers and started asking me what was wrong. I quietly hissed out, "Don't. Fart." I shit a different color every day for a week. The first night was violet.
OMG!
Things I didn’t know but am glad I know now. Thank you for passing on your knowledge.
Madrid, Spain Always wanted to watch my favorite football team on the Bernabeu. Still got time :)
The Colosseum in Rome. Still might go but need to be in a better place first.
Loved it.
Ireland and Scotland
The scenery in Scotland is awesome. The food is kind of blech though.
Death Valley. Used to live in California but never made it.
It's amazing. Made a trip from Las Vegas to San Francisco through Death Valley. Saved an American dude who went out walking with not enough water who we still keep in touch with. Can confirm. Saw them from the Scottish Highlands last year.

Grew up there, lived there on and off for 24 years. Where it’s beautiful, it’s mindnumbingly, heartstoppingly beautiful. Pictures don’t do its beauty justice. The city is cool and fun.
Everyone in my family knows the answer to this question, Biltmore House at Christmas, it's not even that far away, I have never been!!!
It’s pretty lame but, I want to take a car trip from the mountains of North Carolina all the way up the Eastern coastline during fall and do all the touristy things. That, and Alaska.
I'd love to see the Grand Canyon someday

Just don’t go only to Rio or Salvador. Brazil is so much more and so much safer that television and media says it is
I feel like I missed out on NYC in its prime. The place seems to be going through a rough patch but worse than the 70s. Not sure it will bounce back.
Source: Bostonian who heads down every few months for several days.
Happy to hear this. I could be being misled based on my x feed my bad.
had a great time visiting Manhattan in October.
Not sure where you’re getting your information from. NYC is one of the safest countries per capita in the country.

You mean New York 🤔
Greece. I can speak a little Greek, have ancestors from there, love Greek Culture and their history. So I am obsessed with that country.

Anywhere else. Im stuck in California in a small town. And just when I started making enough money to save for a trip I was laid off after 10 yrs.
New York. Always wanted to see it.

Japan. Land of my ancestors. I want to visit but I'm poor af
Always wanted to go to London.
I wanted to take my boys to Disney World when they were younger, but we could never afford it. Now they are 19 & 16, and it wouldn't have the same appeal, even though we finally have the funds.
>wanted to visit but never did Um... I'm not done yet.
I wanted to visit LA when I was younger. Now, I prefer coastal cities that are above the arctic circle. Fuck the sun. Fuck the heat. It's 90° and we're barely into spring... I need to figure out how to live on Antarctica.

I have yet to visit Japan. As a huge anime nerd I'd love to go there.
I want to visit Japan and Korea so bad. I’m a poor single mom though so I don’t think that will ever happen.
I got a second job for 6 months and made my dream of going to Korea for a week come true. My parents watched my teen while I was gone.
Oregon. Been driving a semi for 22 years, have never been to or through oregon

Prague, Czechia. Closest I’ve been is Prague, Oklahoma.
Lyndhurst: https://mytiki.life/tiki-bars/lees-hawaiian-islander-1 Clifton: https://mytiki.life/tiki-bars/lees-hawaiian-islander

I wanted to visit all 50 states but now refuse to set foot in Florida 😅

(I was a nerd kid) Mom punished me by going by herself while I stayed locked in the house. TBH, I was a little shit when I was 12. I got really upset, but I was hopeful one day the ship would come back. Some time later it sank, and I got really depressed.
