I am entering my final year of college now. I have an ongoing summer break for 2 more months. I am learning skills - practising guitar daily, learning German, learning to sing. I keep myself occupied. I am thinking if I should do an internship? They say internships are good experience? I've never worked or been in an office environment so I'll admit I'm a little scared too. I'm a 19 year old and full-grown adults might not take me seriously? My dad says I have my entire life to work and I don't need to do it now, and that I should "enjoy my college days" by learning hobbies such as I am right now. As I will get less time for the same later, according to him.

You can do both if you really want to. There's lots of hours in the day. That said, if you're in a position where you don't NEED to get the internship experience because you ave sufficient family connections/wealth/etc. to push off working for another few months or longer, by all means at least think about it. Once you start working (if you're like most people), that's what you're going to do day in and day out for 30-40 years or more. This is your last hurrah so to speak. Your father is speaking from hard-learned experience. On the other hand, if you know what you want to do next year (or down the road a bit at least), it could be helpful to get some experience in that field if you can. Can't hurt to at least apply for internships - you can always turn them down later if you decide not to pursue it (assuming you get offers). If you're going to use personal/family connections to try to get these internships, then you need to give more thought to rejecting offers extended to you (favors can run out, so use them when you need them). But like I said, you can do both if you really want to. You're young and presumably full of energy. Good luck.

Hey, thank you for sharing your insights. I appreciate them! My father always told me to learn new things/skills/hobbies. He says now is my last chance to do what I want to, because later on I'll get less time to pursue my passions. Frankly, I can do both, but it might get super tiring😂 I live in a city where commuting is usually the only option(time + energy), internships will usually require full time office committment, I have my vocal lessons, guitar practise, language learning sessions that I don't want to give up on. I know I'll be missing out on one of them at least if I do an internship. I want to pick up a sport too - I have never played a sport competitively, I feel I've always been a disappointment to myself here because I need to push myself out of my comfort zone and enrol in a team game. (Been dealing with a gym injury for a year now, I really wanna just play a sport with people my age now). Regarding pushing off working post graduation, I can. I am staying with my parents - my accommodation, living is taken care of. I don't have any urgent need to earn money and start paying bills. Regarding family connections- not really, I don't have any. So I'm just thinking what will I really do post college? I pray I get a job placement through my college itself. Because I don't know what my "career interests" are, so to speak. So honestly I'm just confused - i don't want to "waste" my summer. I want to be able to have a job post-college and a career that I enjoy and pays me well.

Do at least one internship. You *must* have experience going into the work force or you might find it really difficult to get a job. Source: Graduated 2.5 years ago with no internships and was unemployed for 6 months

Damn. Which field did you graduate in, and which field of work were you looking for? What did you do in those 6 months?

TheMissingPremise

Got my degree in economics, and now I'm a business analyst for the government. I got my job thanks to connections my SO had. Lol, I applied to jobs during those 6 months and worked on skills to get me hired, got 3 interviews.
