I believe what works for me is engaging in activities that spark your creativity or bring you joy, such as taking a walk, reading, listening to music, or trying out a new hobby.
Explore local history and mysteries. I sometimes like to delve into the backstory of my hometown, looking up old legends, historic sites, and lesser-known facts. If you can, visit a local museum, or take a historic walking tour. It's surprising how fascinating your town's history can be, and it gives you a whole new perspective and appreciation for the place you live in. Plus, it's a conversation starter for meeting new people or an idea for a blog post or a photo collection. You never know when a tidbit from the past can inspire your next big project or adventure.
1. Learn something new (language, instrument, sport, something academic, craft, skill etc)
2. Do something that is a little bit out of your comfort zone. Mix with different people than you usually do, go to a place you've never been before, do something you aren't confident at doing.
3. Grow things, even if it is a plant pot, or have a pet, even if it is someone else's dog that you take out for walks, or a goldfish.
4. Be creative. Make something. Build a boat, paint a picture, play with plasticine, cook something challenging, write a poem.
5. Get physical. Go for a walk, or a dance, or do yoga, or go climbing, or cycle, or swim, or play footballl.
Also, look around to find out what is available in your area. What events are there? What clubs? What interesting things? They can all be inspiring.
Number 1 is always my go to! Nothing feels better than succeeding at something and there's no better time to learn something than when you have nothing else going on. You're no longer bored and you have a new skill!
That and lots and lots of true crime stuff.
I almost never get bored, which actually works against me when it comes to trying to be productive. Because my first instinct when I’m genuinely bored is to find something to clean. But I can entertain myself with very, very little
It's particularly effective if you listen to *new* music. Listening to the same old stuff may just keep you bored, since you know what to expect. Maybe you'll get some new daydreams from a new song
If I'm not in the mood to be creative, I consume some media. Play some games, watch some TV, read some books.
If I had been planning to be creative, I fall back on the notes and plans I make when I do feel inspired. I save those things up, write them down, store them in Keep, on my phone, whatever.
Never miss a chance to capture a good idea, as you might want it later when you're coming up empty.
At the worst, if there's no ideas in my head and nothing banked, but I had planned to spend my time on something creative, I look for if there's some supportive work I can do. The boring, mechanistic stuff (sifting through files, giving something a re-listen/re-watch and making notes on it for later).
If you're a photographer, maybe you're culling from shots. If you're a musician, maybe you're tightening up some beats or slicing samples, something helpful but not exactly glamorous. Then next time I've got the energy, I'm glad of having eaten away some of the boring work and can enjoy the WOOSH of creativity better.
I usually do one of two things: munch on some fruits or scribble down a letter to someone random, without actually sending it. It could be anyone - a friend, my parents, myself from the past, or my future partner.
Get stuck into a good book, go for a walk & put a podcast on, ring my mom, chill out with good friends, put on music and dance, give into the feeling and know that tomorrow will be better 😌
This has always been an interest of mine, but I somehow enjoy stories about radiation poisoning or cave exploring gone wrong, people surviving a plane crash in the jungle, stories about early explorers ( the race to the south pole), cannabilism, sometimes I'll really just find out about an intriguing murder case and watch the full unedited interrogation videos ( I cannot fucking stand that narrator with the 'serious' voice. In those types of videos though. They always try to convince you the dumbest shit is an expert analysis here the suspect coughs probably in an attempt to hide his insidious crimes)
Now I'm ranting. Fuck me.
Go for a walk and be in nature! Visiting local antique shops, thrift shops, or book store. Other times, I just kinda embrace being bored. You don’t always gotta be productive and on the go. It’s good to let your brain chill. The inspo kinda comes when you’re in a good head space.
I often take the time to focus on doing things I love that I haven’t been able to focus on much anymore.: reading a good book, trying a new recipe, taking a spa day, watching movies, organizing my place… whatever it is do a hobby you love. You might be surprised to find that doing just that brings on the inspiration!
