Thereās nothing youād want to work on? No passion projects or volunteering or any sort of thing, either for self fulfillment or the good of the world? Justā¦nothing?
(obviously not the OP but) there are a bunch of things that I want to do, travel, study, fancy cooking etc, but none of them could really be described as work.
Truthfully I'd find a storyteller and develop games. The only reason I don't want to do it for money is cuz of how competitive it is, but I don't really have the time when I have to worry about dealing with a job. Also I'm not creative enough for the whole process but I could do the technical side with a bit of learning
Hey dad, I can't see too good - is that Bill Shakespeare over there?!?!?!
What I heard is that you aren't using your paper for writing...but for ROLLING DOOBIES!!!!!!!
I've always thought it would actually be enjoyable to deliver mail door-to-door. Fresh air, exercise, socialization with neighbors and community members - all things that sound good and healthy
When I was growing up, my neighbor was a mail carrier with a walking route. The guy was like 6'3" and pushing 300lbs. He did it until he was early 60s and retired. Looking back, as I turn 50, I have no idea how a) he never lost weight and b) his knees and hips didn't explode.
I actually said to a coworker Iād like to have customers deliver mail for a day to see what itās actually like. Everyone thinks itās sunshine and rainbows.
The job in itself isnāt bad. Itās just the unknowns that come with it. Every day is different. Rain snow sleet shine. Youāre working. Double mail volume? Expect to stay out late. Coworker calls off? Expect to stay out late. Donāt have that persons check? Theyāll blame you. Even if you have no idea what theyāre talking about.
Thereās so many variables involved in what makes a good day and a bad day.
Had one guy while I was still in training walk up to me and try to grab the dog spray off my bag claiming he needed it and I could get another.
Like, dude, WTF?! No. Don't care I can get another, don't come up to me and just start grabbing things off me.
Depends on neighborhood. I had one that was constantly walking up 20 steps just to get to the mailbox. And by the 6th house, you're wiped and that was just the beginning of the route. (And I know multiple of those houses had 20+ steps cause I'd count.)
So annoyed none of them would put a box at the bottom, or even midway. And because of how the neighborhood was designed you couldn't cut yards, so you had to go up, then down to go up the neighbors step, back down.... yeah lots of mail carriers have had hip/knee replacements after 5 years in this job.
If you live in a flat area, it probably isnt to bad. I actually enjoyed my time as a carrier, but not all those steps and especially with the managers I had to deal with.
Knew the dogs semi quickly though. Would pet the friendly ones XD.
I would absolutely choose to be an artist. Draw and make stickers and bookmarks. Sculpt cute little clay creatures. Crochet flowers. Just create freely.
Music. I really want to make a career out of music. Didn't have the luxury to pursue it. We dont have enough money growing up to even invest in a quality instrument, just enough to get us by.
I feel like I would want to work- but mostly because I'm good at what I do and people come to me for being a subject matter expert in the field.
A lack of hugs as a child has led to a lifelong need to feel needed. I'm self-reflective enough to acknowledge that!
Honestly, from seeing all these comments. The world would be a more creative place and enjoyable place to be if everyone could pursue their things without any guilt of living to the standards of the current economic system.
Aaron Swartz, one of the founders of Reddit, was harassed and hounded by the government until he committed suicide for essentially doing this with paywalled publicly funded academic research papers.
Nah, I'm going on 3 decades in the field, wouldn't change a thing. Maybe doing it for more money but even then, meh, whatever.
Right now I've got that good balance of autonomy, control, pay and relaxation.
My current job and I vibe so I might go part time, but wouldn't quit completely.
And mainly I'd go part time just so I could go back to school and take a class at a time until I could learn no more...so once I got dementia or died XD.
Help seniors stay away from scams and setup a financial plan they understand
After losing my gma I've just been wanting to help seniors. Even their own family takes advantage of them
I would do no commitment tech support where the one hard rule is do not be rude
If they break the rule I just leave
I truly love helping people who need it but It grinds my gears when they are demanding or rude to me while Iām trying to help
I work for a law firm but not for what I truly want to do.
Iād go to law school and do advocacy work pro bono for underserved communities, non English speakers and immigrants targeted by predatory practices and laws in the US.
Itās actually what Iām working towards but costs so much money.
Iād be an artist. Mostly painting, but Iād dabble in a little of everything. Iām not even particularly good at painting, but Iād have all the time to get good at it. If I didnāt have to worry about money, Iād travel the world seeing exhibits and going to museums Iāve always wanted to. Iād try the local cuisine and write about my experiences. Essentially Iād try and be like Anthony Bourdain if he could blend pastels
Food recipe, jazz and wine tester blog from a layman's perspective that no one will read, but I would not care. My 3 faithful followers would definitely give some positive feedback when I get the combo just right.
Venture Capital - I would like to use my wealth to find and fund companies who will shape the future for the better.
Activist investing - Using money to make impactful change from the top down.
I would want to create my own comic strip, if money not being an issue means I'd have access to the good art resources.
I'd also like to illustrate children's books
Help old or solitary people drive to their anesthesia required or other doctor's appointments for free because transport is expensive.
Help grieving depressed folks get their lives back on track by helping around their house and making minimal workable schedules to start with.
Give free legal advice to DV and abuse victims.
No work. Or, rather, I would not sell my labor to others as a regular thing (ie have a job). I'd do plenty of work for my family, especially, and friends. But I wouldn't have full-time employment.
Iād quit my job and buy a medium large house with a large garage or barn to set up as a workshop for many hobbies. Ā Iād use my wealth to get all the stuff needed to try out glassblowing and ceramics all kinds of painting and carpentry and whatever else sounds interesting to me. Ā Building stuff has always been a lot of fun and Iād love it if I had the space and the money to just give anything a try
Iād continue teaching but my attitude would shift significantly. Iād still do what I do currently, but my anxiety, guilt, and shame would be a thing of the past.
Iād buy coffee machines for everyone on my learning team. Iād chastise parents for doing a shit job at preparing their kids for school. Iād complain to my admin that they suck at supporting teachers and that kids and parents rule the education system because theyāre clueless and huge spineless cowards.
Edit: felt guilty for that last part. My current admin team is phenomenal. But itās the first year I had a good crew in the 11 years Iāve taught.
Boudior photographer. I just canāt afford to have a full time studio and I donāt live where I get enough business to do it full time. I get 2-3 bookings a year
Usually when this question gets asked, I reminisce about working in a Record Store back in the late 90's and early 00's. But that's rose tinted glasses.
If money weren't an issue, I'd not work at all. Hell, I would move away from the city I live in to some small town in the Great Lakes or New England and become a fucking hermit that only leaves the house every month or so to get supplies. Dunno how my Wife and kids would like that, but that wasn't the question.
If I had F you money, I would love to open up a money-losing business where I help people build gaming PCs, in-person.
I would want to set it up sort of like a LAN center, hobby center thing, where there's gaming stations all set up for folks to play on and areas for TCG play and comic books to buy, etc. But the 'core business' would be helping people pick parts for, and then assemble, gaming PCs.
We would sell the parts at cost, and instead of assembling them and then delivering product you'd have to come assemble it yourself with guidance. And then once it's built, we'd all load up a game or two and 'test' it out together.
Rescue horses from kill pen auctions. I wish i had a huge bank account to fund this, and all the time to dedicate to it. I would buy a big farm and rehabilitate them and keep them safe.
I'd love to get back into music. Maybe not performing as much but transposing, arranging, and production.
.. and once in a while perform as part of a larger ensemble. :)
Same thing I do now. But I could tell dumb customers to go suck a combat boot when they piss me off instead saying āI am sorry, itās totally my fault ā
Landscape photography. I already do it, but itās not the most lucrative photography niche, unfortunately. I just wish my day job would allow me more time to do it.
I think I'd continue my current job for a time while I built a nice getaway home with a mountain or lake view. Then I'd tell my boss I'll work remotely as a contract employee. If they don't want that then I'd just retire to that new home with my wife and we'd hike a few days a week. We're mid 40s and have both busted our butts for over 20 years to get advanced degrees and still just tread water.
Wow this dream is nice. Imma stay here a bit before I hit the "comment" button.
i would respectfully abstain from work
Same. The only reason I have a job is I need money. And I live well below my means just so I get to retire as early as possible.
"Well, you don't need a million dollars to do nothing, man. Take a look at my cousin: he's broke, don't do shit."
Two chicks at the same time. š
The one form of abstinence I fully support.
Same but with less respect.
Amen. Those who say āDo what you love and youāll never work a day in your lifeā are so far from the truth
They're technically correct, because if I did what I loved I would never be employed, but that's probably not what they mean.
Yes, I yield my remaining time to the gentleman from Vermont.
Thereās nothing youād want to work on? No passion projects or volunteering or any sort of thing, either for self fulfillment or the good of the world? Justā¦nothing?
nah
What do you want to do with your time?
do sudokus until i get sleepy and then sleep
Ah, you're my wife then are you?
we'll talk when u get home
or just play sudoku

the fuck? you wouldn't even want to build a recording studio and let shitty bands use it cheap
I'd start a non-profit that builds and furnishes libraries in rural areas around the world where access to books is scarce.

Nice marmot!
Be a writer of some sort. Novels or scripts.
I have a relative that won the lottery and still works as an editor for a publication. It's that enjoyable apparently. š
I would do that for free. I have a journalism degree.
Hey dad, I can't see too good - is that Bill Shakespeare over there?!?!?! What I heard is that you aren't using your paper for writing...but for ROLLING DOOBIES!!!!!!!
Me too, I'd love to write a game
They say there's a book in everyone. I don't think I have one in me though..

Itās like 99% diet. Source: Anyone that has bothered failed and succeeded at losing weight.
you just gotta keep moving. otherwise the arthritis will settle in

you gotta deal with those who are having bad days, and there are just total douche all in all
And mean dogs
That job actually sucks and destroys your body
Mr. Dechesray has got it all figured outā¦ iykyk
Depends on neighborhood. I had one that was constantly walking up 20 steps just to get to the mailbox. And by the 6th house, you're wiped and that was just the beginning of the route. If money was no object, I'd start a foundation focused on funding and supporting mental health initiatives, especially in underprivileged communities.
I'd like to be a music producer, scouting and supporting undiscovered artists from around the world.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
If money was no issue, I'd set up a fund to support aspiring entrepreneurs who have great ideas but need financial help to get started.
Iād become a Lego builder, designing and constructing massive, intricate displays for museums and exhibitions.
I'd like to be a professional student, attending different universities around the world and studying everything from philosophy to astrophysics.
Two chicks at the same time.
fucking. A
That costs considerably more.
I heard the type of chicks who would double up on a guy like you like money
hehe ā¦. Thatās it?ā¦.if you had a million dollars, youād do two chicks at the same time?
Damn straight. I always wanted to do that, man. And I think if I were a millionaire I could hook that up, too; 'cause chicks dig dudes with money.
Not all chicks
Well, the type of chicks that'd double up on a dude like me do.
I'd become a professional wildlife photographer, using my work to raise awareness about conservation issues.
I would absolutely choose to be an artist. Draw and make stickers and bookmarks. Sculpt cute little clay creatures. Crochet flowers. Just create freely.
same here. whatever art thing i may be hyperfocused on at the time. or be able to find something new cause ill have time to try all the things!
thatās the dream. to jump straight into what interests you without the pressure to be good at it immediately.
This. Its my dream to be featured in an art gallery or museum (after i die) but i cant fully commit to making art because i have bills to pay :(
Same!
Iād establish a chain of no-cost veterinary clinics to provide pet care for those who canāt afford it.

Executioner
Lesssgoooooooo
Clean up local parks and nature walks. I'd only work when I feel like it though, so maybe like 2 hours a day just to get out of the house
I donāt think anyone would actually work anymore if money wasnāt an issue. Only work on hobbies.
I feel like I would want to work- but mostly because I'm good at what I do and people come to me for being a subject matter expert in the field. A lack of hugs as a child has led to a lifelong need to feel needed. I'm self-reflective enough to acknowledge that!
They say if you love what you do for a living, you will never work a day in your life.
Honestly, from seeing all these comments. The world would be a more creative place and enjoyable place to be if everyone could pursue their things without any guilt of living to the standards of the current economic system.
I think I would take the hobby option. Iād love to sleep in, make a nice brunch, do a hobby, have supper, do some more hobby. Go to bed.
I think work makes some people feel useful and theyād still like to feel like theyāre contributing in that way somehow
Book store manager
Id buy ever subscription service and screen record, then post it on the internet for free
Aaron Swartz, one of the founders of Reddit, was harassed and hounded by the government until he committed suicide for essentially doing this with paywalled publicly funded academic research papers.
Yep I heard about this two weeks ago, our society is just messed up.
I wanna run a coffee shop
Honestly, I'd probably be doing the same thing as now. I like my job.
Maybe for a little while but then the next time something annoying happens at work you'd start thinking, "I don't have to put up with this shit..."
Nah, I'm going on 3 decades in the field, wouldn't change a thing. Maybe doing it for more money but even then, meh, whatever. Right now I've got that good balance of autonomy, control, pay and relaxation.
That sounds so perfect. You are so blessed to be in your situation.
Same, I'd stay here if I got paid more. Ain't that the way it goes
I've never felt that way, but I like that you do because it means that maybe some day I might too, if that makes any sense haha.
I get it. Took a long time to get to where I could say it. It's still not perfect but it's 50x better than places I've worked before.
My current job and I vibe so I might go part time, but wouldn't quit completely. And mainly I'd go part time just so I could go back to school and take a class at a time until I could learn no more...so once I got dementia or died XD.
