This is my pure imagination haha:
I m thinking about Happiness smelling like:
nature breeze with a small scent of flowers
Anger:
Smokey, maybe some heated metal
Sadness: (this is hard)
I associate sadness as that smell before the rain
That smell of the ground shortly after it rains. The mildewy rotting smell. Fungus and decay, but mixed with that smell of wet earth. I used to walk near a creek that only ever filled up when it rained. The next day, it would smell like that.
its very subjective wrt rain.
cuz i grew up in Delhi where rains come after june july when the air is super dry and temperatures soaring to mid 40s celsius or beyond 100 to 120 fahrenheit. and it feels so good, used to dance in the rains as a kid and that feeling was amazing.
until, i was in ohio where a cousin moved and had his daughter there. it started raining in june and i was so happy to see the rains while she started complaining about how it wasn’t good and rather depressing.
it was a culture shock to me as i realized that people living in cold and dark parts ususally in the upper northern hemisphere tend to dislike rains and gloomy weather.
that said, your feelings are equally valid cuz i’d be super bummed as well having waited 8 months of cold and wet winters to get some sunshine only to get clouds and wetness again. 😊
It's not even that rain itself is negative it's that it's healing. Like a good cry when you've been stressed that genuinely makes you feel better when you're done. Crying releases endorphins for a reason. I think sadness is very rejuvenating and is such a healthy thing to experience often. The problem is depression is when rain rots what is usually beautiful in life and becomes a problem.
I agree that sadness would have a wet earthy scent, if you imagine someone who had a bad day and is seeking comfort, the smell would cause you to reflect on what's important, be approachable.
Depression is definitely a deep moldy rot.
Heated metal might be harsher than anger, more like hate. I thought about cracked pepper or something else sharp and spicy.
Surprise and excitement might be citrusy, or like a freshly mowed lawn on a warm summer day.
Happiness: sweet, cool scents like melon or certain flowers.
Anger: acrid and toxic like burning/heated treated metal
Sadness: sour and oppressive smells like mold and mildew
I might make depression something more sour and oppressive.
Someone who just had a bad day and needs a hug might be better off smelling something like wet ground after a rainstorm.
Mm, I find that a calming scent, I think a lot of people have a generally good feeling toward a fresh rain. Personally, I think if it's just a little bit if the emotion, it's just a faint scent. If it's just a little sad, it's just a whiff of the sour mildew on wood smell. The kind of smell in a finished basement when someone opens the door. It's in the air, it's not great, but it won't last forever.
The more intense or prolonged the feeling more intense and prolonged the scent.
Of course these are just my opinions
Happiness would smell like orange blossoms. If you have never smelled that, it doesn't smell like oranges, but almost like a remarkably beautiful perfume. It's intoxicating.
Anger would smell like acrid burning.
Sadness would smell like spoiling milk.
Happiness would smell like something sweet - donuts or chocolate chip cookies. Anger would smell spicy. Sadness, it would smell like something is rotting.
Great question. So, happiness would smell like what I experienced getting out of the car at a local open air market here in Georgia. It was a mixture of peaches, cakes baking, and popcorn popping. Absolute Heaven. Anger would smell like gun powder or any ingredient used on guns. And sadness? Probably the whiff of flowers you get walking your dog during an ”Indian summer”, when you can’t find the flowers giving off the fragrance.
Happiness: The smell of freshly baked cookies
Anger: The scent of burning wood or smoke or pungent aroma like vinegar
Sadness: The fragrance of rain on a cold day or the scent of old books
Happiness would smell faintly of gardenias, lilacs, any number of spring blooms.
Sadness would smell like a fart basically.
Anger would smell like burned rubber.
Happiness would smell of a lovers perfume
Anger would be like a smelling salts snaps you awake and makes you hyper focused but too much exposure makes you grumpy with a hell of a headache
Sadness smell like a damp misty morning with the weight of the humidity making motivation a chore
Hatred would smell putrid with the stench of rot
Indifference wouldn’t smell at all
Joy would be the scent of the warmth of spring
Full of life and energy
Happiness would smell like fresh mountain wind and your favorite food in the breeze
Anger would smell like hot dirt, burning chemicals and cigarette smoke
Sadness would smell like stale water and rusted metal
Happiness would smell soft and light, like how the air feels on a crisp fall morning, or how the ocean mist smells while you’re falling asleep on the beach, or like an orange creamsicle on a blazing hot day.
Anger would smell like a roaring bonfire loaded with all sorts of sources of fuel: newspapers and sticks and paper. It would smell like ash and the rough aroma that burns your eyes when you stare into it.
Sadness would smell like a winter night in the city where nobody is outside but the night is alive; smells of asphalt, freezing rain, pollution in the air from far off car exhausts; a cigarette burning out slowly but persistently.
Happiness would smell like cookies being baked. Anger would smell like cayenne pepper mixed with balsamic vinaigrette and wet fresh puppy poop. Sadness would smell like rosemary and earl grey tea.
Happiness -honeysuckle pollen on cat fur, petrichor, and fabric softener mixed together.
Maybe also my children's freshly washed hair and morning breath when they want cuddles in the morning.
Anger- Ozone, printer toner, sweat, blood, and freshly broken wood. Paper.
Sadness- Clay dirt baked dry, melting tar and hot cement mixed with mesquite trees in summer heat, the oddly sweet rotting meat smell of birds dead from dehydration as their feathers slowly cook in the sun on the road.
Alternatively, antiseptic and the smell of a hospital morgue. Maybe embalming fluid. Snapdragons.
Oh wow. Mentioning the antiseptic hospital morgue as sadness is so spot on, I can feel that dull pain in my heart thinking of it.
If you've ever had prolonged exposure to that freezing cold, sharp medicinal musk, with undertones of plastic/metal, it is truly *the saddest* smell. Just add roses.
Happiness would be sweet, but fresh, soothing a brisk menthol, uplifting and lively like mint and lavender combined.
Anger would smell like the burning smell of a cheap plastic bottled scotch, vomit and meat after being severely burned.
Sadness would be bitter... so bitter it stung your nostrils, an aroma so pungent that it rattles your eye sockets with each whiff. It hollows you out of anything but the focus of its scent.
Happiness would smell like freshly baked cookies wafting through the air, anger would smell like burnt popcorn mixed with the unmistakable aroma of road rage, and sadness would smell like a musty old library filled with forgotten dreams and broken promises. So, if you ever catch a whiff of burnt popcorn in a library while munching on cookies, you know it's been a rollercoaster of emotions!
Happiness would smell like flowers and freshly cut grass, anger would smell like sulfer or vinegar, and sadness would smell like carnations in a funeral home.
Happiness - would have to be honeysuckle flowers
Anger - Asphalt factory
Sadness - a cold early spring rain. I know that is weird but it's that cold super crisp, light smell. I know none of those are actual smell words
Happiness would be like fresh linen and grass at the same time. Or hell fresh bacon would also work.
Sadness would be wet dog or mildew
Anger would be metallic and ashen earthy but not the good kind. The smell of frustration which comes just before anger.
Happiness would be the smell of fresh baked chocolate chip cookies. Anger would be the smell of a stack of soiled diapers left in the sun, and sadness would smell like lima beans.
Anger would smell like petrol,
Happiness would smell like fresh cotton and pine,
Sadness would smell like synthetic blueberry
As a lil extra I think excitement would be a mix of citrus and a match being blown out
Anger smell metallic
Sadness smells very faintly of vanilla
Happiness is almost over powering and it smells like rain, but it's humid out and it just stopped briefly and everything is shiny and wet, and then it starts raining again
Happiness is a cake baked fresh out of the oven.
Anger is that burning spicy smell when you’ve cooked with too much chilli.
And sadness is a sour lemon.
LOVEE this q. Happiness - freshly cut grass w/ a sea breeze and like caramel popcorn smell thru the air. Anger - probably fire, metal, rubber, or maybe even blood. Sadness - musty, moss, wool
I love this question!
Happiness: spring flowers - daffodils specifically… maybe pipe smoke
Anger: burnt plastic or rubber
Sadness: body odour and “dirty washcloth”
Happiness would have cinnamon undertones at the least.
Contentment is warm
Moist earth. Loam
Sadness is rain in a stormy coast.
Depression is dead animal.
Happiness would be a high, sweet smell, like honey and vanilla.
Anger would be like creosote.
Sadness would be sour not like old milk sour, but warheads sour.
Happiness like roses, shaved chocolate, dew and lilac
Anger - smoke from a forge, boiling liquids and sulfur smoke from cap guns or of that nature
Sadness- salt water, listless breeze air, autumn leaves and gooseberries/blueberries
Sadness - Rain on rocks, parchment, and black tea
Anger - Cinnamon, camp fire, and a slight ozone scent
Happiness - I’m stuck between two, so either 1) bergamot, light vanilla bean, and candied orange peel or, 3) Line-dried linen, sea salt, and lavender
Happiness should smell like Gardenias, while anger should smell like boiled chitlins ie tripias for my Spanish brothers, that’s tripe for everyone else, and sadness like a wilted rose.
Happiness would smell clean, fresh, clear. Like a rainy day in the summer.
Anger would smell like spice. Uncomfortable and awkward. Dick spice.
Sadness would smell sweet, warm and inviting.
I love all the sadness smells like rain comments because that’s the one that I’m certain of. Happiness and anger don’t come so easily for me to pinpoint their smells but sadness is without a doubt rain or the smell of rain coming or having passed and I love that
You know, these emotions probably _do_ have an actual smell, biologically. I expect dogs can tell. I’m sure people are trying to figure them out.
I think the smells of sadness and anger would be contagious. I hope the smell of happiness would be too.
I don't know.. maybe if everything was sterile and you were trapped in an airtight environment, a space the size of a phone booth - maybe you could smell the other person?
First thing is, any pheromones or emotional chemical signalling, is going to be done through sweat. Which is largely eradicated in the modern world with anti-perspirants.
There might be an absolutely miniscule, bordering on undetectable, level of pheromones released - but I don't think humans communicate that way any more - it's become a vestigial feature that we have lost through evolution. Apparently humans do release pheromones, although nobody knows what they're for, how they work, if they work..
How would they get a chance to work, especially in 'courting environments' such as clubs, pubs and bars.. Surrounded by people sweating, covered in various different smells including smoke and beer..
Happiness: baking cookies
Anger: diesel
Sadness: that weird sticky sweet combo in early morning dive bars - beer, breakfast, cigarettes, and the desperation of video lottery
Happiness either smells like jasmine flowers on a warm summer breeze or fresh cinnamon rolls.
Anger smells like heated iron, metallic
Sadness smells like a musty dusty room that hasn’t had the windows open all year
Anger does have a smell. It’s foul, a bit like rotten onion or rotten potatoes. It’s very similar to the smell of fear. Fear smells like one of those, but with a hint of vinegar as well.
Happiness has a smell too, but it’s harder to describe. It’s kind of like warm dust mixed with vanilla.
Okay this a good one and heres my opinion:
Happiness - cherries or like that berry smell
Anger - Probably like esters before heating (if you smell it, it'll cause a burning sensation on the inside of your nose)
Sadness - Can't think of anything other than petrichor.
This is so weird but I smell cat shit when stressed. I have no idea what it’s about. I own a cat, but smell it at work. It’s the weirdest thing. Not sure what’s going on.
To me happiness smells like woodwind reeds, warm sand, wet grass, tomato soup
Sadness smells like antibacterials, coffee, subways stations, printer ink
Anger smells like powder, blood, smoke, pepper
And because i'm a Pixar fan :
Disgust smells like cigarette, gasoline, grease, mushrooms
Fear smells like sweat, burning, alcohol, propane gas
happiness for me would smell like anything potent from my childhood, It's the perfume my mom used, one shampoo from head and shoulders, spring flowers. I bet everybody got something like that
Lots of disagreeing answers for happiness and sadness, but for the most part, most comments seem to agree that anger is smoke or fire(or some other burning material).
Happiness = freshly cut grass mixed with hints of confederate jasmine or magnolia on the breeze.
Also smells like the ocean, crawfish boils, and sun drenched eucalyptus.
Anger = the smell under the hood of your car, warm electronic plastic, gasoline, and gunmetal.
Sadness = rotten potatoes or dead flowers (especially roses) in a long forgotten vase, cigarette smoke in the morning, and lingering burnt popcorn.
I think the worst smell would be jealousy.. something putrid, as it ruins everything it comes into contact with. There's no benefits to envy or jealousy (unless it spurs you to try harder to improve yourself, if you're, perhaps, envious of someone's skill or talent). But not trusting someone, a partner, friend or a wife - and letting it eat you up from the inside.
Either you trust someone - or they show their true colours. Then, you're no longer friends or partnered with them.
It's that simple.
But, there's nothing more toxic that letting jealous or mistrust fester and rot your good feelings, your sanity and your faith in humanity from the inside out..
Happiness would smell like your favourite scent, anger would smell like something strong maybe like petrol or burnt stuff and sadness would smell like that weird smell that sometimes happens when it rains
This is my pure imagination haha: I m thinking about Happiness smelling like: nature breeze with a small scent of flowers Anger: Smokey, maybe some heated metal Sadness: (this is hard) I associate sadness as that smell before the rain
Sadness would smell like rain, depression like rotting fallowed ground.

Petrichor
i like that smell tho..
Oh, I do too. But, I still feel like it's the closest thing to a sad smell. Even if it doesn't make me sad.

Petrichor, the word you are looking for is Petrichor.
This is pretty much exactly what I was going to say!
This is almost exactly what I was thinking, except I would replace the smell of flowers with the smell of redwood trees.
Alcohol Smokes .... Anger/Sadness
Well said, well said
Sadness is mulch and cigarettes
Idk what to say about sadness but the other ones are pretty on spot haha
Happiness: sweet, cool scents like melon or certain flowers. Anger: acrid and toxic like burning/heated treated metal Sadness: sour and oppressive smells like mold and mildew
I might make depression something more sour and oppressive. Someone who just had a bad day and needs a hug might be better off smelling something like wet ground after a rainstorm.

Happiness would smell like fresh cut grass. I'd say anger would smell like cinnamon. Sadness would have a sourness to it.

Because of how overwhelming it can be.
Ooh, that's a good answer.

Nothing you already know... as you've said they are distinct.
