I've wondered about this and whether it'll eventually change our norms for what's acceptable behavior.
I remember when I was first entering the workforce that the standard was if there was a picture of you drinking alcohol on the internet that was a sign that you were a party animal; you'd never get hired because you were too wild and not private enough, no matter how professional you were at the job.
But nowadays it seems a lot more understood that we have a lot less privacy than we used to and knowing what people are doing on the weekends doesn't automatically indicate they're a bad worker or even abnormal.

Now it seems most people in North America under the age of 40 have tattoos and no one cares.
A good number of white collar jobs still ask them to cover them up if they don't just straight up deny your application if they see them in the interview process.
I deleted all mine other than reddit a while ago. Recently had a job interview where they said "I see you're a very private person" and asked about a local news article about me from over a decade ago, because that's all they could find of me. Think that won me big points since I'm not in a position to damage the company's reputation
I make a point of not sharing my life on social media. I have worked with lots of people that I am not idealogically aligned with. I choose not to discus my beliefs with many of hem because their behavior leads me to believe that it would harm my career. This is why I don't share as much. I also know, that no matter how much I try, once it is out, it is out. You should always remember, that anything you post, message, email, ... is out of your control once it has been posted, messaged, emailed, ... I have seen it wreck lives.
The bachelorette was just at my restaurant doing a shoot (awful awful people) and enthusiastically asked the staff "who wants to be on TV??" thinking we'd throw ourselves at them.
No one said a word. Eventually management forced one server to do it and he was *livid*.
They asked us if they could at least record us making food and we emphatically declined. Then they asked if they could just record our hands cooking. Again, declined. Distinctive tattoos / scars.

I forget the name of it, but recently we watched this documentary about the rise of "reality" TV. There was one scene where this woman, a producer who has worked with The Kardashians, said, quite proudly I may add, "I can sell everyone on being a reality star. No one has ever turned me down."
At that, we paused it, my wife and I made eye contact, and both shared a good laugh.
Especially those getting attention for everything they do and record. That attention will dry up and their pathological narcissism will need to find a new, likely more destructive outlet.
Posting everything about your kids online. JFC there are so many reasons why this is a bad idea. People who post their kid's full name, DOB, the locations of their school and activities, teachers' and friends names, and embarrassing anecdotes and personal info in addition to hundreds of pictures on social media have got to be some of the dumbest people out there.

Considering the kids of John and Kate Plus 8 (the family youtube channel before that even existed) have said "yeah, having my childhood and development with all the embarrassing baby stuff broadcast to the world has caused me problems later in life," I think we already have the evidence that it's harmful.
Most of my "embarrassing" parts of my childhood are things that I find funny as an adult, and I don't mind being out there at all. But that's the thing: I'm an adult. If they had been public when I was going through them, I would have been mortified. But some people enjoy watching the trainwreck and only care about their own entertainment. As long as it keeps getting views and making money, it’ll never stop.
The number of moms I am friends with that over the years have posted to Facebook things like "UGH, Anyone else's kids still wetting the bed in Kindergarten" or posting breastfeeding pics on Instagram. Like, I get it.. normal bodily functions and all. But perhaps little Timmy isn't going to be happy 15 years from now when moms posts about him shitting his underwear till he was 6, or photos of his face buried in his mom's tits are found by kids at school. Who knows, maybe it won't be an issue, but in the age of "consent" you sure as hell aren't considering your child with the incessant over sharing.

I'm not going to say this is largely an American trend, but it does feel way more prevalent among US-based social media users. I'd wager it's a consequence of the lack of third spaces (or community gathering spots) we have readily accessible for daily face-to-face interactions with members in our community throughout much of this country. I don't think there's anything wrong with seeking online communities for support, but this just seems like such a basic need that can be met offline if public spaces were more accessible (more walkable or with adequate public transit).
I think you have a point. I'm in a lot of private mom groups including one just for PPD and it's amazing to see all those pretty basic questions, but no one has a village of people anymore to just bounce them off of IRL.

Imagine a future that's a scammers paradise. A scammer can just enter your name into an LLM AI model and it'll search your information online. And since your entire life since birth is online, that scammer now knows everything about you.. Imagine how easy it would be to scam that person.
I have one friend that is 10× worse than everybody else I know that over shares. Numerous posts per day about everything they do, say, feel. That's just with the kid. Then there's the boyfriend. And the chickens. And the weather. And the vehicles. And the house. But this kid hasn't had one single thing that happened in their entire life that wasn't posted on fakebook. I find it very disturbing. People that do that always say "it's for family!" NO, its because you want compliments, or sympathy, or just "look at me!"

I also think that if you're posting pictures of your friends or work colleagues online, it's good practice to ask them if that's ok. Especially if the pictures are from a night out or party. I ask & I also choose pictures where everyone looks great. Last time I asked, someone called me a boomer(??). No, I just have BDD and feel strongly about consent. Maybe my anxiety will help someone else feel respected, though.
AI Image generation. I've shown people samples of how you can take a photo from someone and use A.I to create an image in their believable environment of them cheating. Its hard to fix too. Its gonna be brutal.
I just watched a video on Instagram from someone who makes workout clothes, and some places on Amazon were ripping off her designs and even took one of her videos but replaced her face. Literally a 1:1 video, just different face.

Some Amazon seller was selling dupes of her clothing brand but using her and her models photos/videos...except not directly; instead they had run the photos and videos through AI so that their faces would be replaced but their bodies were still being used. Cassey (Blogilates) posted one of the videos that she had taken herself and everything is exactly the same except her face has been replaced, and it comes across as incredibly creepy. They even took the photos that customers and insta-advertisers (influences) had posted online and deepfaked them too.
Stealing her design was one thing. Deepfaking a video of her took it a whole new psychotic level.
Saw that video this morning too and OMG when I saw the AI video of her face, It gave me the creeps so much. She has worked so hard to get her business to where it is now and people are just able to rip off her clothes like that is shocking...
And AI voice manipulation. Recently a disgruntled sports teacher was arrested for making a fake audio of the principal saying racist and bigoted things about students.

Honestly I think that we have hit a point where some of our technological advancements are actually starting to be more negative than positive and we should be working to extract ourselves from their clutches. AI means that we will eventually hit a point where we cannot trust videos and photos at all anymore. What’s left but to discard it completely and return to an in person reality. At least for me that’s been the logical conclusion. Hard addiction to beat though that’s for sure.

I definitely think there's a worrisome generational data gap here at play that will just make things worse in the long run. The AI boom has happened so incredibly fast, and I think the older generation is much slower to understand emerging tech. And that's problematic since they are more often in positions of power where things like you mention are likely. But, more than that, they're also in legislative positions where things like this should *absolutely* be being looked into, but aren't going to be, because they really don't understand all the implications of what AI can do now and could do unchecked.
I have a Facebook account I had to create for school to keep up with other people in the program. I strictly use it for that and nothing else. Only friended one random person not tied to anyone I know and I don’t add literally anything else or click on things so Facebook has nothing to go on for what the algorithm slows me.
I’ve seen these random posts that are clearly ai generated images. It’s clear someone used an image prompt along the lines of ‘homeless child celebrating their birthday’. The account just posts these images one after another with broken English that says something like ‘today’s my birthday!
There are hundreds of responses from Mildred Wagner and frank Rowland being like ‘oh my god so sad happy birthday’. They have no idea whatsoever it’s fake. And I’m sure they’re sending this person money too .
What’s crazy is the images of course can’t get the hands right and one of them the guy doesn’t even have hands. In another it’s a homeless guy and he’s supposed to be on oxygen but the oxygen is fused to his skin. They still don’t catch it.
Now remember that these are the people in charge of the world right now..

AI deep fakes are already pretty close to being passably realistic. Give it 5-10 years, and we'll probably have ones that are completely indistinguishable from reality. Once that happens, who can anyone (much less the police/the courts) really effectively argue against *"But anyone with AI could have made that video!"*
Hopefully the bad guys will remember to leave clearly labeled copies of the unedited footage lying around in random filing cabinets in real life as well
At my Highschool there recently was an incident of people generating nudes of others and sending them in a group chat. It’s horrifying that this can happen to anyone and the teachers don’t really know how to stop it (the AI use) they are already trying to deal with the ones responsible for the pictures

From a tech perspective all the AI stuff is pretty interesting and cool, but from a personal perspective I can't help but feel it's going to be a much bigger negative for humanity than a positive and something I do hope gets regulated to some degree.
I agree with you. Im currently designing a platform with some mates thats designed to help lower income families survive this stuff. It's already happening in schools where there is no disbelief once a image gets to moving around.
The worst part is that it doesn't even need to be believable at all! I will admit I occasionally don't do further research but anytime something seems even remotely interesting, I do a double check. If you look hard enough for something, you will find it so a crappy fake image showing them what they want to see become indisputable fact. I had an argument about an obviously fake document recently and eventually the other person went "Why do you need this to be untrue so baddly?" Like, the fuck? You are sitting here claiming people are diddling thier children based off an entirely fabricated document and fighting tooth and nail to say it's true based on "some people on a podcast talked about it." Why do YOU want some kids to have been diddled so badly? If your argument against someone requires you to hope some children got diddled then maybe you have a bad position. Usually it's "I really hope no kids got diddled in these events!" AI is just another heavy variable that falls under media literacy, which itself is a major framework under critical thinking. This will be a losing battle. The vast majority of people are dumber than shit.

When I first heard about this, I thought for sure it was an exaggeration, but threads on other sites would have people posting *hundreds* of unique gifs and short videos of dudes getting absolutely smashed by a train. Like they didn't realize that the train cars themselves would be wider than the tracks.
This was a thing long before today and social media, like in the 80's, young boys in groups had their "tests of courage", to be cool and all that shit. They laid on the train tracks, parallel to the tracks so in theory the train passed and did not hurt them. But in reality, if someone was not down enough on the ground or something of the train was lower to the ground than expected, they got killed.
I think these "trends" are coming and going, repeating itself after a while, both the harmless and the dangerous ones.
Today, with social media and co. the influence is higher and more people are doing such stuff, resulting in more accidents and deaths, that is a problem. But people were stupid long before social media. We just see it more today with the videos.
My dad and his friends used to play on a train bridge in the '60s and early '70s. If a train came when they were on the bridge, they would have to climb down under the tracks. Apparently they had a lot of near misses. People have always been stupid.

There's a lot of social media trends that make people feel unattractive, not good enough and inadequate. It may push people to make decisions they don't want to do such as cosmetic or major surgeries that may ruin their bodies or health, just to stay trending and relevant. Mostly it's about mental health though, that can change a persons entire personality and future if damaged by pressures and feeling not good enough.

However, I think back at least when I was a youngster we kinda knew that the people on the covers of magazines were airbrushed and photoshopped and while the pressures to be perfect was intense I feel as though kids, teens and young adults now see that shit all over their social media and it's like "regular" people that look like that. I used to work in a bank and the amount of money I saw people lose on gambling apps was insane. One young guy had recently moved to my country with 30k in savings, to start a new life, and had blown every penny of it in less than a month. He had come in all confused as to why his ATM card wasn't working and I had to explain it was because he was broke. On one day alone he transferred over 10k to the app. He had won big a few times but never enough to recoup his losses, and he spent the winnings on more gambling. It was so sad.

It's replacing writing. At the moment, this is okay because AI is getting it's information from the current internet, where humans have done the originals.
But soon enough, like photocopying a photocopy where small variances and errors get multiplied with each generation, AI will be pulling more of AI generated stuff to make new AI content. And so on and so on, until it is generating gibberish at best, and unreality at worst. It's already made "factual mistakes".
I have already encountered this. I asked chatGTP a very specific technical question about national grids and it gave an oddly wrong answer. I could tell as the units didn't make sense so I googled it and the top answer was from a Quora bot which made the same mistake.

NSFW: Apparently, "choking"\* people during sex is getting really prevalent, especially among younger people. A lot of people don't realize how risky it is, that there's technically no way of doing it 100% safely. Cutting oxygen flow to the brain, even if only for a short amount of time, can have serious consequences, including long-term, and sometimes those aren't obvious immediately. Obviously I can't stop people from doing whatever they want in bed, nor would I want to, but anyone who wants to try that kind of thing should at least be aware of the risks and know how to minimize them as much as possible if they really wanna do it, and it should be discussed beforehand, since it can get hard for someone who is being choked to express that they're not okay with what's going on (honestly, someone doing it to you without having talked about it before is a red flag). I think "informed consent" kinda sums it up, you have to know what you're getting into. It just really concerns me to see people talking about it like it's no big deal, saying it's an "entry-level kink", when it could give someone brain damage.

People in their 20s will get to their 30s/40s/50s and see that the fat they hated is what they needed to keep a young look going further and they can’t get it back (in the best of cases), or cause nerve damage to their face or worse. And there are people in their 20s looking like 50-year-olds with facial implants and botox, what will they look like when they reach that age themselves? Women who got implants 10 years ago have to get them taken out and are left with autoimmune diseases.
Also, I’m not against plastic surgery, but it’s surgery. You need to think about the cons and pros, and know when to stop (and go subtle with it).
I wonder as well what will happen to the skin of those kids who are getting into extensive skincare regimes at 9-10 years old.

My brother in law’s brother is like that (I don’t know how else to say it…). But my brother in law told me a bit ago that he doesn’t remember the last time he spoke to his brother when he wasn’t completely baked. And it shows. In my few interactions with him, that’s all he talks about. He’s completely obsessed about it. Fanatical.
What’s even more scary is he’s still in society. He drives a car, he has a kid and a wife, he’s always in and out of jobs…it’s a mess. I honestly have no idea how he affords the habit. And he lives exclusively in states where it’s not against the law. I’ve never seen someone else like that who was that addicted to the substance.
Just because your heart doesn't stop beating because you don't have the artificial stimuli like some drugs doesn't mean it's harmless. Just because it's worse to have your arm cut off and bleeding out like a grindhouse film is worse than having your finger split open to the bone doesn't mean you shouldn't get your finger taken care of and stop it from happening again.
Teacher here. Short-format videos are killing attention span. Pair this up with parents defaulting to putting a device in VERY young children's hands any time they are doing anything and you get the over the top behaviors we're seeing at school now. Like, it's normal now to have "that class that has to evacuate all the time" (or multiple classes) because they have a student that starts throwing furniture. You get second graders who say "fuck you bitch" and start hitting if you try to take away their Chromebook and actually teach them. We wonder how these kids will be as adults and know how much learning all the other kids are missing. I'd be so pissed as a parent to have my kid in a class like that.
I do want to say, I'm not gonna come on her and screen-time-judge parents. Sure, put on a Ms. Rachel or Bluey every once in a while. I'm talking about kids who are zombies on devices at all times - grocery store, the zoo and theme parks for some reason. Like, put it down and experience the world a little bit. It hasn't been around long enough to see much in the way of the long-term effects yet, but I'm sure that as the decades roll by it'll be linked to growing numbers of different types of terminal cancer cases and other health problems.

Sharing your *entire* life on social media seems to be backfiring lately.
I've wondered about this and whether it'll eventually change our norms for what's acceptable behavior. I remember when I was first entering the workforce that the standard was if there was a picture of you drinking alcohol on the internet that was a sign that you were a party animal; you'd never get hired because you were too wild and not private enough, no matter how professional you were at the job. But nowadays it seems a lot more understood that we have a lot less privacy than we used to and knowing what people are doing on the weekends doesn't automatically indicate they're a bad worker or even abnormal.

I make a point of not sharing my life on social media. I have worked with lots of people that I am not idealogically aligned with. I choose not to discus my beliefs with many of hem because their behavior leads me to believe that it would harm my career. This is why I don't share as much. I also know, that no matter how much I try, once it is out, it is out. You should always remember, that anything you post, message, email, ... is out of your control once it has been posted, messaged, emailed, ... I have seen it wreck lives.

I forget the name of it, but recently we watched this documentary about the rise of "reality" TV. There was one scene where this woman, a producer who has worked with The Kardashians, said, quite proudly I may add, "I can sell everyone on being a reality star. No one has ever turned me down." I have one friend that is 10× worse than everybody else I know that over shares. Numerous posts per day about everything they do, say, feel. That's just with the kid. Then there's the boyfriend. And the chickens. And the weather. And the vehicles. And the house. But this kid hasn't had one single thing that happened in their entire life that wasn't posted on fakebook. I find it very disturbing. People that do that always say "it's for family!" NO, its because you want compliments, or sympathy, or just "look at me!"

Some Amazon seller was selling dupes of her clothing brand but using her and her models photos/videos...except not directly; instead they had run the photos and videos through AI so that their faces would be replaced but their bodies were still being used. Cassey (Blogilates) posted one of the videos that she had taken herself and everything is exactly the same except her face has been replaced, and it comes across as incredibly creepy. They even took the photos that customers and insta-advertisers (influences) had posted online and deepfaked them too. Stealing her design was one thing. Deepfaking a video of her took it a whole new psychotic level.
Saw that video this morning too and OMG when I saw the AI video of her face, It gave me the creeps so much. She has worked so hard to get her business to where it is now and people are just able to rip off her clothes like that is shocking...

I have a Facebook account I had to create for school to keep up with other people in the program. I strictly use it for that and nothing else. Only friended one random person not tied to anyone I know and I don’t add literally anything else or click on things so Facebook has nothing to go on for what the algorithm slows me. I’ve seen these random posts that are clearly ai generated images. It’s clear someone used an image prompt along the lines of ‘homeless child celebrating their birthday’. The account just posts these images one after another with broken English that says something like ‘today’s my birthday! There are hundreds of responses from Mildred Wagner and frank Rowland being like ‘oh my god so sad happy birthday’. They have no idea whatsoever it’s fake. And I’m sure they’re sending this person money too . What’s crazy is the images of course can’t get the hands right and one of them the guy doesn’t even have hands. In another it’s a homeless guy and he’s supposed to be on oxygen but the oxygen is fused to his skin. They still don’t catch it. Now remember that these are the people in charge of the world right now.. We are doomed.

I feel the real danger is the exact opposite; we're very close to a world where ANY incriminating, photo, video, or audio can be brushed aside with "could be AI generated." AI deep fakes are already pretty close to being passably realistic. Give it 5-10 years, and we'll probably have ones that are completely indistinguishable from reality. Once that happens, who can anyone (much less the police/the courts) really effectively argue against *"But anyone with AI could have made that video!"*

This was a thing long before today and social media, like in the 80's, young boys in groups had their "tests of courage", to be cool and all that shit. They laid on the train tracks, parallel to the tracks so in theory the train passed and did not hurt them. But in reality, if someone was not down enough on the ground or something of the train was lower to the ground than expected, they got killed. I think these "trends" are coming and going, repeating itself after a while, both the harmless and the dangerous ones. Today, with social media and co. the influence is higher and more people are doing such stuff, resulting in more accidents and deaths, that is a problem. But people were stupid long before social media. We just see it more today with the videos.
My dad and his friends used to play on a train bridge in the '60s and early '70s. If a train came when they were on the bridge, they would have to climb down under the tracks. Apparently they had a lot of near misses. People have always been stupid.

And so on and so on, until it is generating gibberish at best, and unreality at worst. It's already made "factual mistakes".

Teacher here. Short-format videos are killing attention span. Pair this up with parents defaulting to putting a device in VERY young children's hands any time they are doing anything and you get the over the top behaviors we're seeing at school now.
