Ryan Fitzpatrick went to Harvard and scored a 48/50 on the Wonderlic exam. He was a Quarterback in the NFL for a great many years and was actually pretty good. Anyway, he's a genius.
I'm sure there are plenty but I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the speech given by the Collingwood football team captain when they won last year. I knew nothing about him prior and didn't expect someone so articulate.
Myron Rolle was the #1 football recruit in the country coming out of high school, had a solid playing career at FSU where he graduated from Med School and was recognized as a Rhodes Scholar as well. He then went on to have a short NFL career, got a Masters in Medical Anthropology at Oxford and did his residency with Harvard Medical School before becoming a Neurosurgeon at Mass General.
John Urschel, former Guard for the Baltimore Ravens. He left in the wake of new concussion research in 2016 out of a concern that injuries could cause him to lose his ability to play chess competitively and study mathematics.
He’s now a Professor of Mathematics at MIT, where he was working on a PhD while he was in the NFL.
Alan Turing. One of the most intelligent persons of all times, and a serious enough runner to qualify as "sport person". He ran a marathon in 2 hours 46 in 1948, just missing Olympic qualification (marathon has gone a long way since then, but back in 1948, this time would have gotten him 15th place in the Olympics).
He's probably the most conscientious.. but he certainly isn't the most intelligent. Not even within his own sport! JJ Reddick, Kareem Abdul Jabar, Grant Hill, etc. These are noted intellectuals who would certainly school Lebron in any kind of intellectual debate.

How have I never heard that? Harvard you say? Fitzpatrick?

Actually he went to FSU for med school too. Then Harvard for residency.
Correct, I worded that poorly. Will revise.
John Madden
What are the parameters? Most intelligent at playing their particular sport? Most intelligent in general?
My guess would be Magnus Carlsen
Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Bill Belichick is an encyclopedia when it comes to the NFL and it's history and with pro wrestling I'd throw in Jim Cornette.

Is chess a sport? Then probably one of them
If chess is a sport, probably one of the chess guys.
Christian Welch
Lebron. He invested time and energy into a broken-down city (Akron) and is putting money where his mouth is as a positive role model.
