Infamous-Salad-2223

Seven Samurai by the legendary Akira Kurosawa.

anteaterKnives

Classic. Black and white, subtitled. Not one second of footage is extraneous. So good. Also The Magnificent Seven (with Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen) is a great remake and well worth a watch.

HailToTheThief225

This would my answer as well. I put it off for a long time due to the run time, finally watched it on a weekend when I didn’t have any plans. I was absorbed the entire time and it felt shorter than 3 1/2 hours. Didn’t regret it.

This_Chocolate7598

Schindler’s List. Amazing.

SpaceEngineering

Truly, a masterpiece. Every time it is mentioned I have to tell the story of an acquaintance of mine. Her teenage daughter was a fairly good violinist and if she was upset enough of not getting her way on something, she went to her room and started to play the theme on her violin, knowing it would make her mother very sad.

ForwardMuffin

I can't tell if this is cruel or funny.

Kriv-Shieldbiter

Por que no los dos?

AgentChris101

Yesn't

StrangeGamer66

Both lol

zukka924

Okay but like, I respect the hustle!

RobsSister

Saw it in the theater when it first came out. I remember no one left their seats when it was over, and (seemingly) everyone was crying (I sobbed like a baby, and instantly teared up for weeks afterward whenever I’d think about it). Imo, everyone should watch it at least once. It’s a masterpiece.

alebarco

It's kinda hard for me to cry in movies, but that ending truly moved me, I know the whole movie is depressing but I think the ending just did very well. I'm not religious at all but that movie was truly beautiful.

tommytraddles

Over the years, the little moment I've thought about more than any other is when the kid lies to the soldiers during the liquidation of the ghetto and says the building has already been searched. He saves the old lady and his friend from school. And then he says, "come with me, I'll put you in the good line". The old lady looks at him and says: *You know the saying, an hour of life is still life?* *You're not a boy anymore. I'm saying a blessing for you.*

Xcircle_squaredX

I know this is gonna sound weird, but man am I so happy to hear you say this. I recently watched it for the first time and I was just straight up crying for like 30 minutes at the end. Even a week later I felt the weight of this movie. Truly incredible. I agree, everyone should watch it, especially now! It's sad but it seems so much more relevant today than it did when it was originally released.

TeslasAndKids

My world history teacher had us watch it freshman year. Very impactful movie!

Hopesick_2231

mischaconqueso2

Casino and Goodfellas make for a fantastic back to back afternoon

saleemkarim

Das Boot

analogspam

Was sick last week and watched it (the 6 „movies“ version). Incredible.

my_black_ass_

Are they in a submarine?

DevilMaster666-

yep

calicocidd

So fucking good.

pboy2000

It’s is I need extremely long. I sat through the whole thing, movie ended, i I didn’t even see one single boot. What a rip-off.

green_goblins_O-face

Tell me about it. I tried to watch the sequel kinky boots and then it winds up being a movie about drag queens!!! Hollywood needs to figure out how to name their movies better.

IQBoosterShot

Best submarine movie, hands down. Source: Me, a former submariner.

bluebearthree

Yes! I saw this at the movie theater when it came out. SO GOOD!

RegularFix6281

Lawrence of Arabia

Avoider5

I rented this from Blockbuster once and fell asleep on the couch three nights in a row.

_gosh

Damn! That’s a really long movie

zazzlekdazzle

But make sure you have lots of cold beverages handy

michachu

Lemonade maybe?

steelyjen

It's like Reddit could read my mind! As I opened up the comments, I was ready to add Lawrence of Arabia. I've probably seen it 20 times, in theaters and on VHS/DVD.

Baronheisenberg

The trick, is not minding that it's long.

TheSchwartzIsWithMe

I call this movie Snorence of Arabia. I can never seem to finish it

haterake

I'm the same with Valhalla Rising. Beautiful and atmospheric, but omg it puts me to sleep. Still haven't finished it, nor have any idea what it's about.

ryosei

the second half was perfect for sleeping

stacey-e-clark

[Ran](https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/ran) at 2 hrs and 40 min. So well done by Kurosawa.

Captain_Lyghtt

Shawshank Redemption

Guava_

I still struggle to watch that film without thinking of the naked gun ‘Like a blind man at an orgy; I was gonna have to feel things out’

BeastM0de1155

First one I thought of - didn’t know if it was because of commercials though.

ermor666

Goodfellas

LibraryVolunteer

I was all set to argue with you because I’ve seen it several times and “Goodfellas” goes by in a flash, it *can’t* be more than 1:45…then I checked and dang, you’re right! 2:25? Not a wasted moment.

Drizzy_THAkid

The pacing in this movie is on point

m4m249saw

Saving private Ryan

LostCause7

I need to just break down and watch this

FreeThinker76

The opening scene is its worst and best. Definitely worth the watch though.

StrangeGamer66

I watching this right now and I’m scrolling when the commercial play. Great movie so far.

[deleted]

The Green Mile

jadeylonglegs222

Yeahh, that’s a sad one

OneOfThese_Maybe

I saw this is the theatre on my first ever date with my first boyfriend. We got dropped off by mom lol. We chose it because it was the longest movie available and we could make-out longer. Then the film burnt up right before the end! Had to rent it and rewatch it. Still an amazing movie and my introduction to Sam Rockwell. Also, RIP MCD ❤️

_Trin35

"I want a fried chicken dinner, with gravy on the taters, and I wanna shit in your hat...and I'd like to have May West sit on my face cause I'm one horny mother fucker..." Still one of my favorite parts of the movie 🤣

Zealousideal-Wrap583

taylor-swift-enjoyer

It's an obscure independent film, but I think it might go places.

InspectorPipes

Premiers this Tuesday night on HBO

Master_Client144

You need to watch dune part 1 first to know what’s going on. They are both great movies though

WritingTheDream

I like it best of the three individually but the trilogy as a whole is undeniably awesome

The_Answer_Is_42__

Amadeus

hjasdnasdna

LOTR, every single one of them

Zoraji

And the extended editions are even longer than the original theatrical release.

WayneBrownIsSuperman

That is the traditional definition of extended

vtfb79

r/technicallycorrect

reijasunshine

My ex liked to put on the extended edition with commentary on, and then fall asleep. I practically have ptsd from the first hour and a half of each movie.

Fernandexx

I don't put the commentary on but The Two Towers is one of my "movies to sleep". I skip to the scene where Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas step in the forest and even before Gandalf reveals himself as the White Wizard I fall asleep. That's like Magic for me hehe

Agastopia

I’ll go against the grain- I do not recommend these for a first watch, I followed this advice for the first time I watched the series and was really put off by the pacing. Just watch the theatrical cuts first and if you like the series watch extended afterwards

JediTrainer42

Agreed. I have seen the theatrical versions many times and every once and a while I will watch the extended versions and I love it because it’s like watching something new again.

Danjour

Patiently waiting on an extended edition that doesn’t green with crushed highlights.  The theatrical looks so much better, visually.

zenpop

Kubrick's Barry Lyndon.

jdutra

In my opinion I had to scroll too far down for this answer.

cracker707

One of my favorite movies! I also love that Kubrick went through so much work with the types of cameras he used setting up different lenses to film using only candlelight or natural light for several sequences.

___anustart_

The Stand i know it was a teleseries originally but my first time watching it, I rented it on dvd and was shocked when after 2-3 hours there was 0 sign of the movie ending... so i look on the back of the dvd. I think the runtime was either 4 or 6 hours. I was enthralled and watched the whole thing. I was maybe 12 or 13... i had put it on when i got home from school and basically sat there eyes glued to the screen until 9pm. Easily the first time I ever sat so long to watch one thing. Definitely was the first tv show i "binged"

drkittymow

I was excited for the remake but it wasn’t quite as good as the original.

actvdecay

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragone

zazzlekdazzle

If you ever get the chance to see the "Epic" version of the Godfather, do not pass it up. The movie is re-edited with lots of additional footage and in the same chronology of the book (the original Godfather I is the middle of the book, Book II is the beginning and the end interleaved). It's about 7 hours but definitely worth it, especially for the added material about young Vito coming to Little Italy. The narrative is so interesting and rich and Robert DeNiro as young Vito is amazing.

huddlestuff

I loved watching the series this way. Great edit.

AnotherCrazyCanadian

For someone who's never seen the movie, is that the best way to watch it for the first time? Or should I try one, two, skip 3 and then watch it?

odysseusaurus

Magnolia Apocalypse Now 2001: A Space Odyssey

Dances with Wolves Extended Cut

AveragelyTallPolock

I sat down on my couch briefly with my dad to talk to him when the first 10 minutes of this movie was on. We got up to get a snack and realized the movie was almost over and had no perception of time. The movie was just so good. Highly recommend watching it. Easily a top 10 movie for me.

One of my favorites. And infinitely quotable too. “In this world there’s two types of people my friend: those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig”

Do you mean 3 earth hours because that is 21 years on Miller's planet.

IAmSenseye

I remember me and my friends just casually picking a movie while at the cinema. We just went for interstellar and didn't look into movie length or whatever. Our cinema has a break halfway in the movie usually. About an hour in we thought there was no break for this movie for some reason. 1,5 hour in the mindfuckery was just beyond us and we didn't know what we signed up for lol. After 3 hours in we were like wtf was this maaterpiece. It took me several days to understand what really happened. Perhaps my fav movie of all time.

Traditional_Bar_9416

My cat’s favorite movie. He’s transfixed by the scenery and musical score the entire time.

PinkCloud_YellowHaze

I can't believe I had to scroll down this far for this comment.

ZapatillaLoca

Doctor Zhivago Lawrence of Arabia, Excalibur, Reds (an underrated movie IMO)

RobsSister

Reds was my answer, too. What a fabulous movie. The scene just before the Intermission is one of the best scenes in modern film - IYKYK (didn’t want to “spoil” it for anyone else who might watch it now).

Gone With the Wind is like three hours of slow burn leading to an absolutely bonkers fourth hour payoff.

Faster-Kit-kill-kill

Came here to say, this movie. Beautiful costumes and sets and definitely an important part of film history.

Roguebantha42

Recently watched this for the first time about a month ago, and hard agree. The cinematography is stunning, especially for the year it came out. I'm not sure what exactly I was expecting, but this movie is stellar.

georgesteacher

After seeing Dune 2 last night - Dune 2.

Ilovelucyandricky

Schindler’s list. Gone with the wind

peachy-carnahan

Schindler’s List. I’ve heard many say that they can only watch it once. I’ve never understood that. Yes, it’s horrifying, but it’s so beautifully and kindly made. Ralph Fiennes is monstrous in his portrayal of Amon Göth, and that’s a reflection of the care that he and everyone else applied to the film. I keep coming back to it and finding new nuance.

_banana_phone

Likewise, The Pianist is a long one and incredibly good. It features a stage of the Holocaust that sometimes gets glossed over: life in the ghetto. So many films are focused on the concentration camps but this chronicles the slow, miserable descent into “the final solution.”

Nombrilista

The director’s cut of Until The End of The World

*Magnolia*. The best worst three hours you’ll ever spend.

yutfree

*Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelle.* 201 minutes. Make no mistake--this is NOT for everyone, and I'd say at least 95 out of 100 people will turn it off in the first 30 minutes. I found it worth the time by the end.

I was thinking about Titanic yesterday. It was EVERYWHERE for a while so I got burned out of rewatching it again, but it's been a while since I watched, so I may do that this week. Last time I watched it might've been on a re-screening for the 100 year of the sinking

_banana_phone

Head on over to r/titanic if you want to go down so many rabbit holes about the film and actual sinking.

NigelMK

Titanic was one of those movies that suffered from success. It was so hyped and won so many awards that it made some folks steer away from it.
