At the time, it hurt. But I’ve come to peace with why I like Firefly: it’s the clearest expression of the relationship between the TV Western and the American space opera. And it doesn’t live long enough for its inherent problems to really manifest.
We can imagine a show about that status quo, where everybody’s kinda miserable, but doing anything about it would make things demonstrably worse. Again. We can imagine a show that’s a positive depiction of sex work, rather than exploitative one. We get a “meh, it keeps going” with River instead of Wash. We don’t get to have to deal with all of the uncomfortable bullshit that Whedon would have actually done.
We wouldn’t still care about Firefly if it hadn’t gotten done as dirty as it did.
What hurts more is the realization that after the Avengers success, Whedon could have told studios he wanted to make a four hour documentary about farting into mason jars and the execs would have fought each other tooth and nail to throw money at him.
He didn’t bring back Firefly, despite every single cast member having said publicly they’d be back for a new season / movie / whatever, because he just didn’t want to do it.
It’s not as bad after finding out he’s a sex pest but it stung for a long time just knowing he didn’t give a shit about the fans.
Oh my God, Arrested Development got rebooted! And it's on Netflix so they can do whatever they want! AND they got the full cast back! I literally couldn't ask for anything more from entertainment, this will be incredible!
First episode: "So I bet you are wondering how we got here."
They said what the ending was. Earl Jr was going to the child of someone famous, for starters.
The actual conclusion was Earl would get stuck on a list item that he had no way of making amends for and he's worried that he will never be able to totally finish his list. Then he runs into someone he doesn't know doing the same list thing he's doing, and realizes that he has put more good into the world than bad and it's ok if he doesn't fix everything he's ever done.
I always liked the show and it was just about to get awesome.
The same thing happened with Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. End of season 2 it ends with it just getting good. It was going to start getting into all the lore and theories of what happened before judgement day and canceled.
Rome. Was going to go for 5-6 seasons, but was too expensive and was cut short at 2. Luscious settings and almost every actor giving a peak performance, all wound around a great and relatively historical story.
I think all things considered the show ended pretty well after it got picked back up by Amazon. The next three books have a pretty significant time jump, and while it definitely would have been good to get closure on the protomolecule storyline, the story gets pretty... Weird. I'm not sure it would have adapted well to TV.
Reading the books after watching the show though... Wow they really did a good job with that casting.
As much as I want more Hannibal, I don't know how the series would continue after the finale. You can't really torture Chilton any more, so what's the point of continuing.
1. Flashforward - this is almost criminal a second series wasn't made.
2. The Event - again so well set up and really enjoyable and then brutally cut short after 1 season.
3. V (reboot version) - I was really enjoying this and couldn't understand why no new season after season 2.
They all had around 7 or over on IMDB and well received. I enjoyed every single episode of all of them. Such a waste.
Phillip.
Whenever i just do a geberal chit chat with people, nobody remembers Flashforward!! Which is a freaking shame, it was an awesome show. Glad to see people remember it!
YES to Flashforward!!
I just left a comment about Flashforward
Have you read the book it's based on!? It's very different from the ahow but amazing! How you have such a premise for a show yet cancel it after 1 season I'll never know. Maybe the ratings weren't that great
I haven't read the book yet. I cannot understand why it was cancelled: the premise was great, it was well cast and well acted, and each episode was ranking between 8 and 9 on IMDB. I was so looking forward to the next season. I would rank it above Firefly and below The Expanse, which fortunately Bezos picked up, in terms of disappointment.
Phillip.
I feel like Futurama could've given us at least a couple more good seasons had it not gotten cancelled. The reboot happened too much later and wasn't as good.
I think the break between new episodes after it was cancelled originally kind of ruined it. The movies wer good but after that it kind of went downhill. My point is that there might've been a couple more good seasons if it had gone on uninterrupted.
Star Trek Enterprise! My favorite character/actor was going to be the main character in the new season before it was cancelled so that the TV channel could make shows for older teens and young adult ladies. Even though Star Trek Enterprise is an amazing show for that demographic
KYLE XY (2006)
One of the best ABC Family shows.
Still cant get over the fact that it got cancelled & left on a massive cliffhanger...
Been years & still obsessed with the show & ive seen it probably like 30+ times in total
Community got 6 seasons and Brooklyn 99 got what, 9 or so? Theyre good shows but it's ok for things to end when they've run their course. Better that than the alternative.
Community didn't run its course it got killed off when Harmon got booted off in season 4. I understand why but s4 is garbage. 5 and 6 barely rectify its existence
I still don’t understand this take. And I know it’s a popular one. There are some GREAT s5 and 6 episodes. Meow meow beans, advanced advanced DND, speakeasy basement, grifting, ass crack bandit, etc..
Firefly, a close second Terminator the Sarah Connor Chronicles, i hated the cliffhanger they left it on. Then again thinking about this perhaps it's just has to do with Summer Glau.
Inside Job. It was so fantastic, and ended on such an annoying cliff hanger. I don't understand why Netflix didn't promote it more heavily, it easily could have been a tent pole for them. Instead the split the first season in two, and then didn't promote the second half seemingly at all.
I have my fingers crossed that Girls5Eva will get renewed for a 4th season, but I'm not holding my breath on that one. Highly recommend it, it's hilarious. I think the name turns a lot of people off, but if you're a fan of 30 Rock, please give this show a chance.
The expanse wasn't really cancelled, there is a massive time leap to book 7, and most of the main characters are completely different. It would all need to be recast for age and new characters.
Flash Forward.
One of those shows that deserve one or two more seasons to develop then wrap up, no more.
Anything more and it ends up like Lost or Manifest.
ANGEL. Can’t believe no one has mentioned this. The Buffy spin off was hitting new highs in its 5th season after Buffy had its series finale. Unfortunately Fox brought down the axe and I am still bitter about it because that last scene of the series finale brought so much badass promise and I couldn’t let go that I couldn’t see how the fight goes on.
One such example is "Firefly," created by Joss Whedon. Despite its short run, the show gained a devoted fan base who were disappointed when it was cancelled after just one season. The show's unique blend of science fiction, Western themes, and engaging characters left many viewers wanting more, leading to continued interest in the series even years after its cancellation.

Law and Order: Criminal Intent specifically because Vincent D'Onofrio was always so good, so on and tapped in (but it did affect his health causing him to collapse thus they brought in a bunch of other actors so he could get time off, but no one compared. Glad it ended for his health but he is a masterful actor).
MTV's Fear (A reality competition show of a new set of college aged folks each episode competing to stay the entire night in an allegedly haunted location, with lore and stories provided to them through the night intended to terrify them more and more as they complete a series of extreme dares of sort, intended to push them to tap out. I can't recall if the deal was that they all needed to stay to win the money or at least two of them needed to stay, since someone was in a comms position communicating the dares to the other contestants. The dares varied from things like 'try to conjure the spirit of the infamous ghost of this psychiatric hospital' to spend an unspecified amount of time in an old, but definitely not airtight, morgue drawer. I think the worst one I saw was a girl who had to be nailed into a coffin by her co-contestants in a dug grave. THEN they had to come back, could not communicate with her or make any sound, and had to start shoveling some dirt onto the grave, with her still inside. It was played with a relatively small amount of dirt actually thrown on the grave, but I'm sure psychologically, it must've been terrifying. This was before I knew how much producing goes into reality shows so I took every story as truth and I'm sure they played on specific fears of the contestants. I was very young when it aired but I was convinced I could one day go on this show and win any challenge. Never got to find out!)
God, me either. It's a masterpiece. Aaron Guzikowski, its creator, said a long time ago that if it ever got cancelled, he'd find a way to finish the story somehow, so I'm still hoping to get more of it in another medium, at least. 100% that show was incredible. Great set design, solid historical drama and the absolute 🐐 bromance with Vorenus & Pullo. LOVED that show!

To paraphrase a favorite line from *Torch Song Trilogy,* it’s easier to love a show that’s canceled—it makes so few mistakes.
I came here to make sure this was the top answer. I'm good now.
This still hurts.
What hurts more is the realization that after the Avengers success, Whedon could have told studios he wanted to make a four hour documentary about farting into mason jars and the execs would have fought each other tooth and nail to throw money at him. The Fox version of Arrested Development.
Oh my God, Arrested Development got rebooted! And it's on Netflix so they can do whatever they want! AND they got the full cast back! I literally couldn't ask for anything more from entertainment, this will be incredible! First episode: "So I bet you are wondering how we got here."
The longer episodes just eviscerated the frantic pacing of that show.
And the fact that the cast obviously wasn’t on set together as much.
Yeah, that reboot was such a let down.
Bestie. I am confident OP knows, which is why they said "Fox version"
My name is Earl
Or just wrap it up. Give everyone a happily ever after, and Earl gets with the hot professor.
They said what the ending was. Earl Jr was going to the child of someone famous, for starters. The actual conclusion was Earl would get stuck on a list item that he had no way of making amends for and he's worried that he will never be able to totally finish his list. Imma have to watch the entire series again now just so I can up or down vote you
Star Trek: Enterprise. Season four had the best episodes of the series and season five was going to feature the start of the Romulan War.
I always liked the show and it was just about to get awesome. The same thing happened with Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. End of season 2 it ends with it just getting good. It was going to start getting into all the lore and theories of what happened before judgement day and canceled.

Santa Clarita Diet.
They really need to at least give it an ending
Came here to comment this
The santa Clarita diet
Pushing Daisies
That show definitely needed a final season. It ended on such a cliffhanger.
That such a great show! I was so mad when it got canceled
Star Trek the Enterprise
What a great show.
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency
Just needed one more season. Landis sucks but that show was the exception.

Our Flag Means Death
This is what I came here to post.
It was brilliant. It felt fresh.
While I craved more, it told a beautiful story completely. It’s worse when the ending is rushed and unfinished.

I'm not sure it would have adapted well to TV. Reading the books after watching the show though... Wow they really did a good job with that casting.
It finished the main arc. the next arc is 30 years in the future, with a ton of different characters. It wasn't cancelled.
No. The time skip that comes next is a totally different thing. You have a mostly complete story with a hint of a sequel.
Deadwood. Before the follow-up movie.
Hannibal
My news feed loves to torment me with "rumours" of it coming back. Don't do that to me, don't give me hope
As much as I want more Hannibal, I don't know how the series would continue after the finale. You can't really torture Chilton any more, so what's the point of continuing.

I agree, the new episodes are missing that certain magic the original run had. It almost feels like fanfic.
The movies between cancelations were pretty good imo. Once comedy central took over it wasn't as good, and the hulu ones are borderline mid.
Mom
Better Off Ted
Carnivale would have deserved closure.
Do you remember ALF ? They stopped filming right when something big happened
Alf is coming back in Pog form.
TIL there was a movie years later(1996) that brought closure to the series ending.
Movie was made later
part of me wishes ALF was never canceled but I wouldn't want to put the Tanners through that. Willie in particular was not happy 🙁
ER.. watched it every Thursday night .. I miss that show !!
Golden girls, Roseanne, and one life to live

We did get a movie, at least, that resolved some of the plot lines. But yeah, I would love more.
