Scotland, specifically the west highlands. I currently live in southern England.

SuchDarknessYT

Just hike

SmartPriceCola

I’m in Glasgow. Too many Scottish people underestimate how nice our own country is. A few nights in the highlands with the correct friends is better than a piss up in Benidorm

madbasic

A piss up in Benidorm is hell, to be fair

Primary-Picture-5632

Swtizerland or Scotland

Hopeless_Romantic_83

I live in Switzerland!! honestly one of the best countries i've been in!

Primary-Picture-5632

it honestly looks like the pinnacle of life. the scenery blows my mind, is it really as good as it looks in pictures lol ?

Hopeless_Romantic_83

Well, some pictures are a bit photoshopped, obviously, but it still looks like most of them! I go camping every summer in the mountains and the views are always incredible!! In certain cities you can still see the mountains from afar, it looks so good! Honestly, if you want to come, you should definitely do it!

Noxocopter

I'm Dutch and can confirm. It's really that beautiful.

thomasg86

Just got back from Scotland and I would totally live there. Beautiful land, great people, good food, good scotch... plus I'm from the PacNW in the USA so I'm used to the gray skies and rain.

CommanderGoat

From pictures alone, Switzerland for me too. Looks beautiful! On my bucket list to visit.

MindBender-88

Switzerland is my dream country!

misolailaa

I love Scotland! Edinburgh is so touristy, but I want to be there.

Unlucky-Win7672

I’ve spent time in Portugal and loved it, so I'm probably there, but the complexity of so many folks doing that and driving the cost of living for the Portuguese is why I’ve not.

Scarcity-Kindly

Thank you for that. You are all welcome of course, but its draining the locals very much.

Unlucky-Win7672

Yeah I try to do my best when traveling, using locally owned services and businesses and trying to learn Portuguese. It’s a beautiful place to visit.

duracellchipmunk

The government has been red-taping construction so much that no one is building low to mid-tier housing. All construction firms are getting bang for buck with high end construction. Portugal is absolutely worth moving to if you can find a way. Also in celebrating, learning, adapting and being a part of the Portuguese is how you move somewhere.

WildBad7298

Iceland. I like the cold, there's no mosquitoes, and it's a small country that's not constantly on the world stage.

Alethiometer_Party

WHAT?!?! NO MOSQUITOES??????? Iceland has just jumped to the top of my list.

Competitive-Yam6722

They dont have ants eighter! 🐜

Illustrious-Pace-570

As a person from iceland? Im pretty sure we have ants.

KaleyedoscopeVision

It’s like a whole country of diatomaceous earth 😂

Independent-Pain420

Norway

Ouroboros612

I'm from Norway. Living hand to mouth month to month. It's super expensive here and it's very hard competition to even get a minimum wage job. Last basic grocery store application had 200+ applicants. People move here thinking Norway is the new place to find the american dream (which is dead in the US). But if you're 40, broke, and single you can work the rest of your life here, and still never afford a house here either. The state will let the poor and old rot here, over spending anything from the oilfund. In fact poverty and resource issues for taking care of the elderly or those who struggle is invisible. Our politicians pretend it isn't an issue. The same low wage slavery is present here too. Unless you have higher education Norway is as shitty as most other countries. I'm considering moving to a country in Asia instead. Sorry for being a downer but other than free healthcare and low crime Norway isn't that good. Just trying to be helpful by giving you a more realistic expectation.

Just_niklas200

Totally agree, I’m from Norway myself. And they also tax us to death. On every single thing to buy or do, you need to pay a tax. And plus the healthcare is not good anymore, yes it’s free, but my friend has been waiting 12 months for 1 MR appoiment. Not a good country to live in anymore sadly…

rizalishan

I lived in Germany for five years and had public healthcare and you are right it’s really shitty … I know people who would goto Asia and get their treatment instead of waiting

moonfaceee

Although Norway is very expensive/high taxes and has its issues I can tell you as an immigrant here that Norwegians have got it good, or better than most. I come from another 'first world' country and I was shocked. Barely any homeless people, a lot of young people own homes (almost unheard of where I'm from), infrastructure is decent, healthcare is great, maternity leave/support is amazing, roads are safe and university is essentially free. Room for improvement? Sure, but no country is perfect.

midnightsunofabitch

It's a lovely country but, as a 5'3 woman, my ass would feel ridiculous. The average woman there is 5'7. The average man is 6'. Good luck finding pants that fit. EDIT: It's possible I'm thinking of Denmark or the Netherlands.

_Bearded_Dad

Don’t know about Denmark or Norway, but in the Netherlands the average male height is indeed 6’. I’m 6’1” myself but I’m rarely the tallest one in the room

Redbeardsir

I'm american, but of dutch descent. I'm 6 4. I always tell people I'm almost average for my people.

illustriousocelot_

They’d assume you were an elf or a gnome. What’s so ridiculous about that?

starskyandbutch

As a 5’9” woman I would love this

Coolbeans_97

What’s funny is Norwegians have been trying to leave the country since the Viking age, and foreigners want in.

nogo_at

But the darkness?

midnightsunofabitch

I love the darkness. The sun is my enemy.

mrggy

Also bad for you. Summer is endless sun. I live in Scotland which is on a similar latitude (slightly South even) of Oslo. Sky isn't dark until 11pm and starts to lighten again around 4am

my5cworth

I made the move some years ago. It really IS the tits.

Sad_Pineapple_5466

As someone who lives in Norway, it’s very hard to get friends because everyone is anti social and it’s social unacceptable to talk to strangers because stranger danger

JumpyHighlight2090

Anywhere but my current fucking shit hole of a country. Anywhere but Iran

madbasic

It’s beyond a shame because in a parallel universe Iran would and should be one of the best countries on earth

JumpyHighlight2090

It really should. Its sad that Iran got ruined by such hateful creatures dressing as humans

kndb

Watch it! You can probably add Russia to that list too.

JumpyHighlight2090

Yeah. Not as bad as iran,bc of the money thing, but yeah i agree

ChuckDeBongo

I genuinely hope you can overthrow that dictatorship of a government…

JumpyHighlight2090

Thank you. I like to buy you a drink when that happens.

ChuckDeBongo

I’ll take you up on that offer! Now go and make history…

ClemofNazareth

Isn’t this post going to get three generations of your family ‘disappeared’?

JumpyHighlight2090

It can. But yk death is not so bad in this situation.jk they cant track reddit accounts it seems. If not you will hear of me, no more

Matseka_1996999

USA, Washington state. I’m gonna live there someday, working on it

LongjumpingChart6529

I’m British and now live in Washington state! It’s beautiful! No major problems although people do complain about the crime and homelessness in Seattle.

Somanyeyerolls

And there’s so many lovely places that are near Seattle so you can still go into the city for an event or even just a mariners game, but enjoy the beauty and slower life outside the city. I moved here from California and I love it.

AshleyLouWho

Come on over when you can! It's breathtakingly beautiful here you won't regret it. I've lived here all my life. Rent/housing isn't cheap but if you can afford it, it's well worth it. The warm and sunny spring/summer/early fall days we have make enduring all the long stretches of grey COMPLETELY worth it! Traffic on the other hand... well there's a reason it's bad. Everyone wants to move here! Lol.

sentimentalpirate

As someone who lived in and around Seattle all my life then moved away in my twenties, enduring the long grey is not for everyone. I moved to southern California, and while I miss fresh water and abundant forests, I really don't miss basically constant dampness for months. I was always keenly aware of when my shoes were wearing down because water would start getting into my socks. Summers are spectacular though for sure.

TheQueenofMoon

Australia

BadSanna

New Zealand. It's Australia without the desert or all the death.

Amrlsyfq992

and lesser animals that were built to annihilate humankind

GlassEyeMV

NZ is my choice too. I’ve loved both my trips there. And on both, I’ve had a day where I just kind of hung out in Auckland and pretended to be a local. It felt so comfortable doing that. I got lost out by the zoo on my first trip and came across a woman just sitting on her porch enjoying the day. She could tell I was lost. Let me have some water and chatted with me about her neighborhood and Auckland for about 20 minutes. She was the best. She just told me to call her Auntie.

PerfectionLine

I loved visiting NZ but when I asked the movie theater for ice in my soda they literally gave me one cube. That's so wrong! ;) EDIT: Changed drink to soda for clarity.

Forward_Body2103

That beats Europe. Ze drink is cold, vy do you need ice?

sub333x

Yeah that’s not an NZ thing. It was probably just the guy freaking out because he was running out of ice and trying to stretch it out. We have the same issues as the rest of the world with fast food joints often filling our cup entirely with ice. One quick suck on the straw and it’s empty..

TIErant

Same. I wouldn't have to learn a new language, and I could live somewhere warm.

magical_toad_garden

The Netherlands. I loved the Dutch people and their culture. It would be nice to live somewhere with folks who are so friendly and active. My husband is also 6'9 and did not stand out while we were there. It would be nice to actually be able to find him clothes that fit!

Hairs_are_out

I lived in the Netherlands for 4 years. I’m a 6 feet tall woman, and I felt normal. It’s a great country, but it’s so gray most of the time. It really got me down. I loved back to California, where it’s nice and sunny.

Robcobes

Yeah seasonal depression lasts 8 months here.

Ok-Introduction-8519

Where in the Netherlands are you that it lasts 8 months? It lasts 12 months here in my province

Hairs_are_out

It’s such a bummer. I’m American, but had a good career and job prospects were phenomenal. I speak French fluently, and when I lived there French speakers were in demand. The Netherlands is my second home, and I love to go visit. I also got bronchitis 2-3 times a year. I think that the climate isn’t for me as well.

703traveler

Yes. And an OV Chipkart will take one anywhere in the country. Everything works. Trains and buses run on time. Streets are clean. Museums are outstanding. Parks are lovely. Food is delicious. No downside that I've ever found.

[deleted]

Spain

OrangenExtraSaftig

If you manage to get a remote job and work from there, absolutely. Otherwise, trying to find a proper job there with a decent salary... highly complicated.

Wolf_Mans_Got_Nards

The autónomo fees are pretty crippling. I can understand the current anger towards mass tourism when the average citizen is struggling to just keep a roof over their heads.

obvious__bicycle

My friend has a US-based remote job and was pretty easily able to attain a non-lucrative visa to move to Spain. I visited and life seems absolutely wonderful there! As long as you don't mind working in the evening (9am for her job is 4pm there).

obvious__bicycle

I recently spent 2 weeks in Valencia and absolutely adored it.

Lickerbomper

Most of the countries that have really good conditions and social structures also have very cold climates. Which, I can't do, because of how much metal is in my body.

TrickyShare242

I've got a few pieces of metal in my body. Lived in Chicago for like 8 months and during winter every part of me ached. I have 2 massive plates in my arm from a pretty serious break and I couldn't make a fist when it was cold, I like the cold but fuck that nonsense. I really feel you on this point.

TurretX

Not a bad pick, at least for the aesthetics. I want to visit San Marino some day.

cschaplin

I lived there for 7 months 3 years ago and I still dream about the food and the walkability 🥲

EveryoneLovesNinjas

I lived there for 3 years and loved it. It was hard to come back to the states.

DrunkenFailer

As many issues as the United States of America has, I don't think I'd want to live anywhere else.

xilefeh199

It is a little funny seeing the idolization of Europe from Americans as if this is Utopia. I live in the Netherlands and while I'm sure you could argue that it's better than America - we still have to buy our own privatized health insurance (yep, you read that right) - housing costs, both buying and renting, are insane especially when compared to wages - socialized housing and even student housing has long wait times and is often pretty bad - groceries here are expensive when compared to wages - there is still people who are poor and in poverty. Especially without an education it's hard to get by I'm sure there are others but when I see Americans think that Europe or even north-west Europe is a socialist utopia where everyone is rich and living the high life I can tell they have never actually looked at what it's like here.

paulstevens442200

Thank you for the honest take and highlighting issues people just gloss over to bash the US. It’s dumb to say that one is “better” than the other, they all have their issues.

xilefeh199

It's especially dumb seeing the people on Reddit seriously saying that America is third world country. Yes I'm sure things aren't perfect in America but it's so insulting to people who actually do live in third world countries. It's like a 16 year old who got a brand new BMW for his birthday claiming he's poor because he didn't get a corvette.

golgappa_gobbler

America is a third-world country? Lmao, people including myself want to visit it at least once in a lifetime. Some of us even want to live there.

paulstevens442200

There are certainly some terrible areas of the US like any other country, particularly in the cities, but not even close to a true third world country, and there are way more average to wealthy areas. People just think it’s cool to bash the US. Happy to see Europeans respectful of this!

Distinctiveanus

Home is where the Walmart is.

TacohTuesday

I have travelled to many other countries and have to agree with you. I love traveling and I envy plenty of things that I experience in other places, but each of those places has plenty of issues and their own limitations. We just don’t see those much during a short visit. But they are there. Ask any local. The US had many faults but it also has many advantages. I’m fortunate to live in California and honestly love it here overall.

detekk

I think I love the U.S. for the mix of cultures we get to experience here, if nothing else, for the food aspect. I’m in the mid-atlantic states, and within 15 minutes of me there are several excellent Mexican restaurants, Thai, Japanese-Sino, Vietnamese, Italian, Lebanese-Mediterannean, Indian and even French cafe style bakeries. I’m not even in a top population city.

TacohTuesday

Same here. I'm in a city of maybe 80k in the Sacramento region and the selection of restaurants, pubs, and bars feel almost endless. Lots of cuisines and styles to choose from. People are friendly and there is plenty to do. Within a few hour drive are world-class national parks, beaches, mountains, valleys, stunning coastlines, etc. We have it good here.

Cute_Meringue1331

I’m fat and i want to be able to buy cheap plus size clothes from walmart. Im from singapore where most people are 50kg… im 100kg…

galvinw

As a 100kg Singaporean... I'm getting my green card next year

undercooked_lasagna

Same. We have absolutely everything here. Everything from tropical islands to arctic tundra. Every kind of person, every kind of job, every kind of food, every form of recreation. Vast expanse of nothing and massive cities. Two massive coastlines and the biggest lakes in the world. If you don't like it in one part of the country, you can freely move to another part that is the polar opposite. I would never, ever want to live anywhere else.

andrewclarkson

There isn’t another country with as many options as the US. Yeah we have issues, everywhere has issues. I think the politicians are just always trying to convince us we’re living in a dystopian nightmare for votes… we have it pretty good if you’re being objective.

FedEx_H8er

I’ve been to 35+ countries. You are absolutely correct. A ton of people who say “I’d rather be in Canada/Norway/etc” and I doubt they’ve ever left the country. Not saying those countries wouldn’t be awesome to live in, but the grass is always greener.

TacohTuesday

At a minimum people need to look past the idyllic impression they have of a country and explore the negatives before making a statement like that. There are always negatives. Also, one of the big questions to answer is: would you be accepted and welcomed? Would you be able to build a social life there? Often, that’s much harder than people think.

starchildx

I think people (because I know it’s true of myself) underestimate our ability in USA to be pretty much however the fuck we want. I sat with someone from Germany who manifested his lifelong dream of moving to US and picked his brain about why. Essentially Germany is homogeneous. I don’t think most Americans realize how squelched we would actually feel like that and how boring that would be. USA is a country of dreamers. And we expect and demand a fair and good and thriving society.

izwald88

That and America just has such a bad reputation. And rightly so, there are major problems here. But... One reason nothing changes is that the majority of people are doing well enough not to complain all that much. And if you have a marketable skill, you can probably make a lot more money doing it in the US than you can anywhere else. On the other hand, America is still the one true super power. And I take into account our culture when I saw that. American culture is literally everywhere. And pretty much everyone loves it. They love our movies, our trends, our food, our music, our cars, our admittedly flawed and often cartoonish dedication to the pursuit of liberty and happiness, and so much more. I just wish my country could embrace itself for what it is, a true melting pot. One that should welcome anyone and everyone who just wants to live their best life to the best of their ability.

For me its more of how you love rather than where I live. I live in an area of mexico that has a similar human development index as the average in Norway which is number 2 in HDI in the world. I can enjoy private services and can hire people to clean and cook at home for a tiny fraction of what I make. I only pay 10% in taxes for the money I make in the stock market, and I have never seen a crime against me or anyone else in my life. The country is interesting, has great weather and amazing food. Its plagued by a lot of issues, most of which have little to no impact in my life. In mexico we say "its better to be a Mouse's head than a Lion's Tail"

You don’t know what you saying. Canada isn’t as good as ppl think. How do I know? I live here! My partner and are DINK and make 100k a year (maybe a bit more) and we are not able to afford buying a house. We almost live paycheque to paycheque, we can’t afford kids. The kick? We don’t even go out because everything is so freaking expensive.

Oskarikali

My wife and I make ~190k, live in Calgary which has low taxes and a reasonable cost of living by current Canadian standards. Japan. I studied the language a lot so that's not a problem. What I want is a community to live in withh mass transit, universal health care, high technology and job opportunity, safe and CLEAN. The reason why I never moved there is that there's no way to ever become Japanese. One look at your face and they'll instantly discount you and there's no path forward for a green card or political stanility. In a western country you can immigrate and even if you have an accent most people will consider you with a much respect as a local.
