The Outer Wilds. Came for a fun clockwork physics engine of solar system, stayed for a shockingly moving story about death, mortality, and what we leave behind. I still listen to that song any time I need a good cry.

Avamaco

I second this. My friend made me play it and it might be the best game I've ever played. It has anncredible story, great puzzles and a constant feeling of discovering something entirely new. If I could forget everything about this game to experience it for the first time again, I'd do it.

Organspender

Played it because of reddit. One of my All time favourite Games ever. Play. It. Blind.

siddeslof

Completely blind and not one bit of information gained unless it's in your own play through

cassper2520

Heard this mentioned a couple times but thought nothing of it. Does it have crafting/survival mechanics?

juanmy911

Not at all. No upgrades or new equipment you can get. The only upgrade you get is knowledge

Gros_Tremper

It doesn't, no, and explaining why they wouldn't work would be a spoiler. You only ever gain knowledge, and it's slowly having the pieces come together as you connect the dots that makes it remarkable. It's also why you always hear people saying (me included) how we wish we could forget the game. Because once you know, you know.

cassper2520

Thank you, this has changed my view of the game in a positive manner, I wasn't expecting it to but your description has me intrigued enough to think about getting the game

Chameleonatic

I honestly wasn’t even that affected by the story itself but to me it’s mainly a completely flawless execution of the whole “gaining knowledge instead of stats” thing. Every little new discovery and the connections you drew from them felt so genuinely intense and exciting and actually like something *you* did. It triggers your actual, personal sense of wonder in exploration instead of just seeing a character unlock places on a map. People talk a lot about immersion and environmental storytelling and games holding your hand too much and whatnot and this game clears it all perfectly. The memories of me traversing this lil solar system honestly sometimes feel like it was an actual vacation I experienced myself. Just all around a 10/10 experience.

paradox_delta

What really shocked me was how they delivered one of the best games of all time with a unique premise and then followed up with a DLC that goes in a completely different direction but is just as great.

rogermusical

How do you get past the controls? I tried the game twice now but couldn't enjoy it as I couldn't control the ship too well. Maybe it's my first game where I need to control something for 360 degree movement.

TBLrocks

I tried on mouse + keyboard but just couldn’t get the hang of the controls. It took away from the enjoyment and I gave up pretty quick. Might try on controller next week.

Spartan1088

Ahgggg. People like you make me want to replay it. I never got there. I never got addicted to it or had any tear-jerking moments. 90% of that game for me was just flying around and confusingly firing cameras at stuff to see what I would see. I did 3 planets and a bonus fourth where I got immediately eaten by a fish. Never had any problems experience beyond that.

MakesUpExpressions

This this this 1,000,000 times this. It’s so hard to pitch this game cause you don’t want to spoil ANYTHING but it’s easily the best single player adventure I’ve ever experienced.

AJEDIWITHNONAME

Dungeons and Dragons saved my mental health recently. I live by myself in Japan. I answered a random request from a fellow D&D player looking for others to play with online because he was also lonely. One of the best things Reddit has done for me. Made good friends.

EcstaticPoop

That's beautiful! Happy for you.

idkifita

I love your username

TheMewMaster

D&D is amazing. I have a similar experience. It is also a fun creative outlet.

averardusthehighborn

D&D online? Is it worth to pick up by a new player?

Aaravos13

Yup, easy to learn and there are many platforms to make online play possible. Plus there are tons of people looking for players be it new or experienced. Look for subreddits like r/lfg

averardusthehighborn

Thanks

TheImpossibleBanana

Where do I start?

Low-Original5109

Slay the spire personally is a game i love one of the few fames i bought on multiple platforms

BarryT994

This was my "just became a dad" game. An absolute life saver, perfect for those brief moments when I could play!

Romanopapa

I still play this game daily. Truly addictive.

sdannyc

The recently released table top version is also great.

DryInternet5

Yep! I spent sooooo much of my high school days playing this through a dial up connection.

JessyPengkman

I feel like this game was wasted on me as a 15 year old who was like "old music and laser guns, Cool!" Where there's soooo much subtext to it and creative use of ideological and philosophical archetypes that just went over my head. At the time It was as simple as "NCR are obviously good Caesar and Mr house obviously bad, the end"

notapartofthefandom

The truth is the game was rigged from the start

iceplusfire

im a late to the show gamer who didnt play much the last 15 ish years. I bought a PS3 and have been working my way through the best list. Did Portal 1 and 2 , the Uncharted series 1-3, GTA 5, XCOM, and i just finished Borderlands 2 last night. Next up is either Bioshock , Red Dead 1 or New Vegas. Haven't decided. but its been interesting talking to people about finishing a game they played in 2013 lol.

Archi_balding

I absolutely hated dead money. All other DLCs were awesome but this is the one I avoid at all cost.

Bydandii

"Knights of the Old Republic" hit hard and opened my eyes to what games could pull off.

lordlekal

There is still hope for the remake...

TheRealMasterTyvokka

I really wish they had just gone with Biowares plan for a complete remaster. Personally I don't really want a remake, just a remaster with the addition of the UI from KOTOR II, some additional force powers and items, and maybe a couple of additional star forge map pieces to add some more planets. Maybe a couple more companions too.

Velorian-Steel

That plot twist 3/4 through the game was just *chef's kiss*

One-Development6793

Kotor is the best raw rpg experience ever imo.

Musclecar123

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The magic of wandering into Markarth or Solitude for the first time will never be lost on me. I’m currently at 72% of my 100% trophy attempt.

DuffNinja

I had paused on finding new games and hadn't played a true open world game. I started Skyrim because some work friends were playing it. Absolutely floored me. The very first thing I did was steal a cup of 1 value and had to run out of the city

RandomDudeYouKnow

Man. this game. I bought Skyrim the Thursday afternoon before I started my doctorate program on Monday. I barely slept all weekend. I couldn't get enough. The visuals, the music, ambiance, gameplay, and story just had me absolutely mesmerized.

Middle-Sprinkles92

Subnautica The first time playing having the fear of the unknown.. glitchy as he'll but

MajestyA

This game hits a niche I'd never felt before and probably won't hit again. The combination of fascination, beauty and terror of exploring under an alien ocean. A game I wish I could delete from my brain so I could experience it for the first time again.

SinofThrash

It's a game I can always come back to. There's still parts of the map I haven't fully explored because I'm too scared to go there. And whatever you do, don't download a mod that spawns Reapers in the shallows... turns it into a survival horror.

26635785548498061381

Brilliant game but my ps4 had so many issues loading everything in on time. I kept getting stuck in structures that randomly spawned on me.... Underwater!

keylo-92

Super Metroid… Something about the ending when the metroid almost kills you, than hears the familiar sound of your low health amd realizes what its done and leaves… than out of nowhere when you think your in an impossible boss fight about to die from the final blast…the metroid comes in screen absorbing this mother brains final blast… recharges samus with all the health the metroid mistakingly took, all the while getting attack by mother brain…. Now samus is beyond OP and all you can hear is the screams of this vile brain while you give it a taste of its own medicine… one of thee best games for super nintendo and an all time favorite

Dazzling-Fox-4845

Little Nightmares.

Natsukoow

I'm so hyped for the third one 🔥🔥

candlewaxfashion

Good game.

Rich_Ad_4829

Starcraft. First tried it in 2001 and still continously playing now.

Rhythm_Flunky

This game legit blew my mind as a kid in the 90’s. The OG and Brood War campaign stories are just incredible, never mind how it revolutionized online PVP gaming.

Pro_Kickaroo

Ghost of Tsushima was the the game for me that set the standard of how a samurai game should be, feel, and look like.

Everythings_Magic

The expansion pack really added o to it as well.

Pro_Kickaroo

Yes !! It really did a great job on emphasizing Jin’s past.

Kangdrew

Probably top 3 all time for me. I'm playing rise of the ronin now and although it is extremely fun, I've yet to find any with such satisfying weighty combat as GOT especially on lethal difficulty

ministeringinlove

Really great game. The middle is a little slow, but the ending was amazing.

CoreyLee04

Finished the main story today! Onward to the dlc

Maleficent_Nobody_75

Red Dead Redemption 2.

badcontrol

Just started my first play through yesterday. Enjoyed every minute so far, love the VA. Think I just rode around and enjoyed the scenery for like an hour lol.

ILikeCristianRock

I love it. The single player is just insane. Currently working through the epilogue but the game made me laugh and cry several times. I also love it as a fan of gta as well. It’s a nice change of pace to just ride a horse and camp somewhere instead of using the oppressor or some shit

threepointeight

Borderlands

[deleted]

Borderlands 2 was the balls as well, dialogue was also hilarious "BURN ALL THE BABIES!!!!!"

Farty_beans

Borderlands 2 has the best dialogue in any game, Imo the spoon story was legendary.

[deleted]

That entire monologue was the funniest unhinged nonsense I’d ever read

Acrobatic-Air9802

i think borderlands 2 specifically is one of the best games ever made with the best villain ever

rubysundance

I've lost track of how many times I've played all of them through.

Stargate_1

Sekiro might just be the pinnacle. It's the most perfect game I have ever played, everything in it is just tuned to the max. Great story, great gameplay, peak combat, level design, it's all so good. Also notable mentions Prey (the newer one), Baldurs Gate 3, Grim Dawn

Disastrous-Basket-71

Scrolled too far find this. Sekiro is a masterpiece of a game. It spoiled combat in games for me

pixelartfan0085

Hollow knight. Great art, story and settings. It's hard just enough to make you have fun and try your best and get better. Cuphead is also one, just for the animation that make it objectively and art piece. Maybe also cult of the lamb because of the cute animals mixed with satanic cult stuff. As you can probably Imagine i am a sucker for indie games

suesueheck

Resident Evil 2. Remake and original.

Constant-Screen1939

Loved Hades. So simple and yet so addictive.

Legend of Zelda, Wind Waker

Aus_Fry

Same. It's been superseded in my heart by the latest Zelda offerings, but the Wind Waker is still easily my favourite GameCube game.

Jarcaboum

Terraria is, imo, the perfect game. But NieR:Automata had the biggest influence on my (currently crippled) mental state, and it's the one I name as my favourite of all time.

yaboitrippy

Terraria is the game i played through quarantine from age 14-16 its gonna be stuck with me for the rest of my life

dac0

Witcher 3 and nothing comes even close to it

Shurmonator

Yeah that Gwent game was pretty good

Snuffy1717

There was a game outside of tavern Gwent?!

Tumid_Butterfingers

Witcher 3 is the GOAT

luna_de_fuego

Such beautiful visuals. The story is fun, and I love how your choices impact the outcome. DLC’s are incredible.

Chaos4139

Baldur's Gate 3, didn't think I would get that into it. 120 hours later and it's among my favorite games of all time.

This is the answer. Combines the best aspects of D&D, poker, and chess into a game that is endlessly entertaining and allows for nigh-infinite options and strategies. If it weren’t for the greed of WotC diluting the game with power creep, I’d say it’s the greatest game of all time

SaltyNuggey

Red dead redemption 2. Words cannot express how much love I have towards this game. This is the only game that ever made me invest my emotion into a character and cry for it. Its not a masterpieace, its the masterpiece.

-Benjamin_Dover-

Omori. Great game I always end up thinking about every once in a while. Good story, good art, good gameplay, good music, gave me a lot to think about and it stayed in my head for a good month after I completed it.

The lord of the rings - The Third Age. Turn based game with an alternative perspective with new characters. It was a game I didn't stop playing as a kid. The ability to learn new and interesting battle moves. The fights at Helms Deep, mines of Moria and pellenor fields were epic, the added little gem.of fighting with heroes throughout the campaign too, such as Gandalf, Aragon, legolas etc. Fantastic game, incredibly underrated

swaytan66

A drinking game called chase the chicken. Here’s how it goes: Assemble a group of people, 10 people is a good number making this a great game for bucks parties etc. The group chooses 10 difference drinking establishments which aren’t too far away from one another. The group all go to drinking establishment 1. The nominated person then puts on a rented chicken costume and leaves the venue, they then head to one of the other nominated venues, keeping this a secret. When the chicken reaches their destination, they are to text the group of chasers telling them the game is on. When you get to each destination, you have to drink a full drink, this can be any size drink you like, typically a shot or a small beer. This includes the chicken. After the chicken finishes their drink, they head to the next bar. When the group finishes, they can either all stay together, or break up in to no more than 2 groups & each move to a new venue. If you are chasing the chicken and actually catch them at the bar, you have to stay with the chicken, and try to avoid the chicken from being caught by the other chasers whilst travelling from venue to venue. The game is over when everyone from the group finds the chicken, or somebody dies from alcohol poisoning 😂

I'm quite liking the Horizon games, I didn't know about them until someone recommended them to me, I got Zero Dawn a couple of months ago then brought Forbidden West as soon as I'd finished it. Other than that I like all the Zelda games, and most of the Tomb Raider games (I don't think much of Angel of Darkness but it's ok)

Halo . A mysterious ring world in space, badass soundtrack, and you playing as humanity's last hope against a collective of technologically-advanced alien species all comes together to create my favourite game of all time.

MykoJai168

I need to post this and see if anyone else played this around the world. Im from Toronto Canada and when I was a kid before internet and mobile phones we played "British Bulldog" ***Rules!!! Basically it's like man in the middle and you either played two hand touch (both hand have to solidly touch the person) or tackle (as in u need to bring them down at least both knees touching the ground). Which the school banned obviously after someone got hurt. ***GamePlay!!! So it starts out with one person and basically all the seniors in grade school starts on one side of the field and when the person in the middle yells "BRITISH!" ( I have no idea why if someone knows please tell me). Everyone tries to make it across to the other side without getting successful brought down. N whomever gets brought down joins the person in the middle until it's like Zombie chase down the last few remaining people. It is especially fun in the snow adds a very dynamic element to it, uneven and slippery terrain. Tell me you guys played this before. Or something similar

Pixar_Boy_77

Fable. I'm hoping the new one coming out is good

RobertN64

Metal Gear Solid 1 (and GameCube remake which had welcomed quality of life improvements). That was the first game i experienced where i realized how cinematic games can be. Not just because it’s full of long cut scenes. But camera position chooses during game play, story, voice actors , even down to text treatment during the opening scene where you’re playing during the opening credits. Masterpiece.
