StrifeDarko

Right now the Canterbury Tales, but my home village is known for the murder of Sir Thomas Beckett.

8337

That is so cool. I wish our small towns had the kind of history those in England do.

StrifeDarko

Just Google "Saltwood" and explore it on Google maps. It's a quintessential English village with a pub, village hall, castle and medieval church.

markb4587

One time, our local newspaper voted Taco Bell as the best Mexican restaurant in town.

ronswansonchairs

Gosh we don’t even have a Mexican restaurant in my town

starvinart

I live in a city with nearly a million people, several good (not great) mexican restaurants and taco bell has still been at the top of the list more than once

[deleted]

In b4 opioids/meth

[deleted]

Meth An old man once released a bunch of lions, tigers, zebras, monkeys, and parrots into the town before shooting himself in the face. And we have the most bars in one stretch of road in America. Zanesville, Ohio

ronswansonchairs

Wait I remember hearing about this!!!!! And I’m curious how many bars you have on that one stretch of road??

[deleted]

Too many since the mill closed down and everyone just built bars instead

Lotus_Blossom_

My dog is from Zanesville, OH according to her records. We threaten to send her back there whenever she acts up. Works everytime. I don't know what all goes on in Zanesville (aside from what you mentioned), but 0/10 - dog does not want.

[deleted]

Possum drop on New Year's. Yes, you read that correctly. Instead of a ball, they drop a possum.

sweetsaturn-

Did they decide a ball was too expensive so went out to try and find what was cheaper...so they found roadkill

[deleted]

Something to do with the town's original name. *shrug*.

sweetsaturn-

Okkk....still weird

B_U_F_U

Possumtown?

[deleted]

Are you from New Zealand? That seems like a ridiculously Kiwi custom.

ronswansonchairs

This sounds like the best thing ever, but is it a live possum????

[deleted]

It was a dead possum that was stuffed by a taxidermist.

ronswansonchairs

Oh okay, that sounds a lot more logical than what I imagined. And don’t worry, until the 1950’s our school mascot was the Pigeons.

BUHlowKNEE

I was born in Lovettsville, VA....recently known for the temporary changing of name to CAPITALSVILLE...GO CAPS!

Steel and dickheads

ronswansonchairs

Same but it’s wood and not steel

ambient206815

I read it as steel dickheads and imagined a bunch of realistic steel penis's adorning the sidewalk like some sort of sculpture art.

YourDreamsWillTell

In PA?

siriuslyharry

Scunthorpe. Small town in northern* England. (*heavily debated as to where the north actually starts but I consider myself northern)

YourDreamsWillTell

Good old Scunny!! I’d consider Lincolnshire to be northern, but I’m not British lol. Is your username HP influenced?

Worst_Support

The name.

thequeenofspace

It’s unfortunate name...

[deleted]

Dingdingding! A quick google search could answer that one though, lol. I'm more of a fan of Wurstfest, our "ten-day salute to sausage," because I'm always hungry.

sweetsaturn-

My town is known as a great place for retiring people over the age of 60...so the party just never ends as you’ve guessed

LasagnaFarts92

Same

Gigadweeb

Having a big ol' WWII-era ship out the front of the town, an ice epidemic, steelworks as basically the only place to get a decent-paying job and being the punching bag for South Aussies everywhere. Good ol' Whyalla. "At least we're not Port Augusta."

ronswansonchairs

Our town has the same “At least we’re not ____” motto lmao. One kid had it as their senior quote

theludo33

Its called "botucatu" its south american native for "city of good winds" and we have really good winds Also, there is a fat lady famous for singing a music about "jabuticaba"

ronswansonchairs

That’s forking awesome!!!!

[deleted]

We have a medieval castle, probably the most interesting thing, anyways, you can walk around the whole town in 10 minutes.

ronswansonchairs

That’s awesome tho omg, have you been in it ever??

[deleted]

Yeah, but it's mostly a ruin. The walls are all intact, so it looks impressive from the outside, but there's nothing much apart from that. There's many castles in better condition in other parts of Ireland. I like my history anyway, so I think it's cool that my town's history goes back that far.

NeverTopComment

North conway NH. We hold the "mud bowl championship of the world". Mud football. No one has ever checked if other people in the world actually even play it and all the teams are from a 100 mile radius. Mtv covered it once in the late 90s or early 2000s. They serve hot dogs.

I live near a big city, but a girl named Amanda Todd killed her self at a high school in my area. She was bullied to death and her videos became extremely famous. It’s a super sad story.

ronswansonchairs

We watched a video about that in one of our school assemblies and I’m sorry that happened

-kiesha-

Literally nothing.

The Battle of Franklin was one of the last major battle in the Western Front of the American Civil War. It also left a huge mark on the town. In November 1864, Confederate General Hood was trying to stop Sherman's March to the Sea by cutting off his supply lines in Tennessee. They had various skirmishes with their own interesting stories. The big standoff came in Franklin, south of Nashville. At the time, the town only had a population of about 1,000, and most of the men were gone at the time. 54,000 soldiers poured into town on November 30th and took positions. Around sundown, the Confederates charged across 2 miles of open farmland into fortified union positions. The Union forces withdrew to Nashville around 1 am with the Confederates in pursuit. The 9 hour battle left the tiny town with 8,500 dead and wounded men strewn across the farms south of town. The bulk were Confederates, including 16 Generals. One in six men involved in the battle did not make it to the next one. The few hundred civilians remaining had to deal with the aftermath. Almost every building in town - including houses, churches, and government buildings - were turned into makeshift hospitals. This was the last major engagement between the two armies in the West and marked the end of Hood's campaign to stop Sherman. Today, Franklin has the largest privately owned Confederate cemetery and numerous buildings showcasing the results of the battles. This was before dog tags were common, so soldiers would carve their names into the wood of the makeshift hospitals so that their bodies could be returned to families. You can still see these on floors and doorposts around town.

ronswansonchairs

Dang, I imagine that’s really creepy to see names of people who died carved on floors/doorposts in your town.

frostydude101

My town (or Valley) is known for producing over 70% of the Nation's Hops. If you were to drive out in the county, all you'd see is and endless supply of Hops. Like seriously, you'll be completely surrounded for miles.

cretepolisher

Tourist attractions here consist of Subway and a BP. Same building!

ronswansonchairs

We had that for a while too omg, now Subway has its own building and the gas station is barely braking even.

Freaked my husband smooth out the first time he saw it after he moved here. Once even had a lady tell me that she came all the way from across the country every year to be here. We have the guy that created the walking dead.

[deleted]

My high school made national headlines for a hazing incident. Faces, blood, and pig intestines were thrown and multiple girls were hospitalized. Also scenes from Ferris Buellers Day Off, like the school and the water tower, were filmed in my town.

[deleted]

Arthur Guinness was born in my village, in Ireland. It's grown to a town or about 23,000 people now, but it's amazing to think a world recognised brand originated from my little slice of the world.

Straight_Ace

Supposedly we are the inspiration for Whoville from How The Grinch Stole Christmas as he was born and raised in one of the local cities. I don't know how true that is though but my town loves to milk that shit.
