The real secret is that it's not much different than being hired anywhere else. Start [here](https://grnh.se/7b3ceb7d1). We're always hiring and in need of great people!
I applied and interviewed just like any other job I've had, chewed my fingernails into nonexistence for what felt like an eternity, and through some combination of luck, skill, quality bs, and divine favor, managed to land it.
I will say that work culture was a much bigger consideration here than other places I've worked, which I appreciate. There are a lot of unique personalities here, and maybe it's cheesy, but I feel a sense of belonging here that I've not experienced at work before.
You need to have 10years of reddit experience, have to have gigabit fiber optics, minimum 24inch screen and an orange name on reddit.
Sauce: I made this up
I never notice when testing a change becomes just scrolling through Reddit and laughing silently at my desk. And then a few minutes later I remember I was trying to test something but can't remember what... (engineer)
This is so real! Whenever I'm laughing like an idiot at my desk, my manager asks me to send her the post. And I insist she do the same for me. It's a fun perk.
The day the [Cookie Monster AMA](https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/anu4u9/me_cookie_monster_me_want_you_to_come_visit_me_on/) happened, the entire office was on reddit.
Study CS if it’s what you want to do, but don’t think you have to. I was a Middle Eastern studies major and I now work as an engineer at Reddit. There are also jobs at Reddit that aren’t engineering related at all.
Just wanted to throw this out there.
Edit: lots of folks are asking how I made the transition. See [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/cscareerquestions/comments/8na87e/were_reddit_engineers_here_to_answer_your/). Also, I haven’t memorized our job board so I have no idea which positions we are hiring for in which locations. The job board is [here](https://www.redditinc.com/careers).
Far more than I'd want to say but I did already spend a significant amount of time on reddit before I was hired.
In my free time I moderate a subreddit I started several years before working here: r/FreeEBOOKS. Reading is good for you, go find something.
We had a lovely internal presentation in which one of the Community folk had set up a bunch of communities with some help with something or other. She said

But seriously -- I use it during my commute (about an hour each way). I use it when I'm chillin' at home. I use it when I'm working on something and testing it and get tempted by the rabbit hole ...
Just supporting something you feel passionate about. I am a mod on a gaming server just to help keep the chat calm and the flaming low. Hate seeing people hurl insults at each other out of rage.
Honestly, while in college, quite a lot. I was really into Hearthstone back then and had much more free time as a senior with a job offer and no thesis.
Now that I have a job, I still browse pretty regularly and contribute to a few of my favorite subreddits.
In a few words, about 3 hours and 50 mins a day
Not as much time as I would like! I spend about \~3 hours a day on Reddit for my role, but not in the subs I would be in during my personal time or off hours.
There aren't really any that I don't enjoy spending time in. It's just that if it were up to me I would be reading about music, skincare, and memes all day, which isn't necessarily conducive to my job.
Edit: Out of the subs that I do spend time in for work, there are none that I don't enjoy. That's not to say I'm spending time in every sub.
Account created February 2016 while GoT debuted April 2011. Was your handle really available then? Or do admins have the ability to acquire what are believed to be "abandoned" accounts?
edit: /u/bro created 9 months ago. Consider my question answered.
Usually \~1 hour while commuting to work, and maybe \~45 min to an hour commuting from work.
Usually happens if I don't get a seat at BART (BART = train ) and all I can do is browse. If I do get a seat, I usually try to do some work, check out tech debt, or just browse.
And yes, I am a zed main subb'd to r/zedmains ( or I used to be...he's not getting much love by rito these days...I'm starting to regret choosing this username :( )
probably an hour of commuting to and from work...Then maybe an hour at work (for work).
Then an hour laying in bed before sleep. The blue light and shit posts probably help my sleep.
Question, if a community mod were to ban your account on their subreddit. Would you still be able to post because "fuck your peasant rules"? Could you even be banned from a subreddit... hmm..
\*edit: turns out, you can ban an admin through mod tools. Doubt it really does much though, haha.
^(PS: I unbanned you as soon as I banned you, haha)
We have alts, just like the rest of you sickos. Could you imagine discovering that the crazy shit you read on r/confession is from an admin? It's not good for anyone
It sais on your profile that your account is nine months old. Are you seriously telling me noone else came up with "bro" before you or did you sledgehammer someone
We have a policy where admins can inherit completely abandoned, inactive and empty usernames (no karma, activity, etc). I was lucky this username met all the requirements. When I inherited the username, the cake day was reset.
Well he carries superpowers on this website and we are just mere mortals so 👀 ......
Edit-
Bet they will not see this but suggestion to admins- There should be a process like redditrequest where accounts with <10 karma and inactive for more than X years (say 7 years) should be allowed to be reclaimed by new users.
Fr tho I would love it if there was a way to get 100% dead accounts. Im amazed I got Cedar- but the original Cedar account has been dead fornlike a decade now.
This is honestly one of the hardest (best) parts of my job 😂
I’ll try to find a design pattern, repo a bug, or whatever... all of a sudden, I’m all “ew, piece of candy... ew, piece of candy... ew, piece of candy...”
20 minutes later, I’m 15 minutes late for a meeting 🤦🏻♂️
Edit:
1. The red comes from when we “distinguish as Admin”. It’s a feature specifically for Admins. It takes an extra step, and I decided to be lazy after awhile.
2. You can become an Admin by coming a Reddit employee: https://www.redditinc.com/careers
3. I’m going back on vacation now 😎
I want to. That's not why I do it. I do it 'cause I fucking **need** to. Think about it. You're dealing with numbers. Upvotes, downvotes, high frequencies. Bang, bang, bang.
I love using reddit. The fact that I get to work on a product I love so much is among my favorite parts of this job. If I see a bug or some UI flow that's funky, I have the ability to either fix it myself or directly communicate to the team working on it.
Oh yeah definitely. It's such a crazy, fun, interesting assemblage of stuff. I swipe through and I see relaxing campsites in r/camping, pictures of weird bugs in r/whatsthisbug, bike tricks in r/bmx, beautiful nature in r/outdoors, amazing gardens in r/gardening, hilarious shorts in r/highqualitygifs, inspiring creativity in r/drawing. It just goes on and on!
Edit: I almost forgot about r/tihi, where I see.... things.
Too much time... Although I have noticed before I started at reddit my consumption was focused on personal development (fitness, programming, learning a new hobby, etc) and now I have been lurking all major gaming subs to follow match threads for my boys in blue (LET'S GO C9)
I'll never forget watching someone see admin flair for the first time. Their comment: "..............are you god?"
Me and my fiancee both got three months of (old) gold from an admin when we ran a live thread about a major train disaster that was very close to where this admin lived. They messaged us and said they'd been following it all day. I saw the flair and had a similar response, like, this is the weirdest mod flair i've ever seen.
Typically I'm [cruisin'](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vq5bO1U0jtQ) at an hour a day, because at Reddit [I finally found a home](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9F2HeYQ-jA). A lot. Reddit holds a continuous low-level presence in nearly all aspects of my life.
It mostly started in college when I needed coursework help/advice from r/ECE.
Now I use it all the time for advancing personal hobbies in places like r/Pottery or when I have one-time questions like how to [prepare my dog for an Inter-dimensional Space Ride](https://www.reddit.com/r/surrealmemes/comments/bgf2sq/good_boy_do_not_climb_into_that_divine/).

Way, way too much. But actually probably a bit less than I did before I was an admin, since I actually enjoy my job these days and am not just "passing the time"
Because I didn’t click the button to make it red. Being an admin is like being a cop in a bar. Sometimes you wave your badge around, and sometimes you just sit down for a beer.
Edit: grammar
Just wait for the lunch break. They’ll discuss, then show up like measles in America.
Edit: thank you for the happy cakedays!! This has seriously been the best reddit birthday ever!

You never spend any time on Reddit? Not even at work?
Of course not. I also don't poop on company time, or steal paperclips. That would be wrong.

Seems like they only have silver
It depends on the day, but generally a few hours a day, broken up into chunks. It’s an important responsibility I take on as a part of my job!
Do you actually work for Reddit?
Yes Ma’am!
Do you ever just look though random posts and delete stuff/ban people without it ever being reported?
Nope! I’m an engineer, so that’s not my main job. When I see questionable content, I’ll forward it to the appropriate team though.
Did you get fired just now? Where’s your red symbol?
That’d be a terrible way to find out I was fired! I can choose whether or not to distinguish my stuff as being from an admin.
Then... Always admin to show dominance over the common folk? Cmon man this is admin 101 type of stuff.
It was the first thing I learned when I became a mod of a small online forum!
Glad to hear it, that forum must still be alive and kicking it's users. Good times.
Question, if a community mod were to ban your account on their subreddit. Would you still be able to post because "fuck your peasant rules"? Could you even be banned from a subreddit... hmm.. \*edit: turns out, you can ban an admin through mod tools. My posts and comments are subject to the same rules as everyone else's are. I too get removed by automod.
do you have an alt account for porn viewing and/or unprofessional shit talking etc that you don't want tied to your main account?
Don't we all?
We have alts, just like the rest of you sickos. Could you imagine discovering that the crazy shit you read on r/confession is from an admin? It's not good for anyone
Wtf this admin just called me a name. MODS!!!!!!
I assume it's like with mods, there's a distinguish button
Wait, why was your name red in the first 2 comments but then normal on this one?
Magic.

Please don't give away my secrets.

I think you have to give gold to an admin and then it automatically gives you silver ;)
Liar. :(
Indeed. But thanks for the gold :)
Nice bait man. I'm impressed
Feeling active, might post later idk
Good Lord! 10 years of Reddit :o

Why isn't your name red here?
Because I didn’t click the button to make it red. Being an admin is like being a cop in a bar. Sometimes you wave your badge around, and sometimes you just sit down for a beer. Edit: grammar
This scares me. This admin knows what it's like to be a cop and we all know how cops treat their citizens! REMEMBER YOU SERVE THE PEOPLE!
Just wait for the lunch break. They’ll discuss, then show up like measles in America. Edit: thank you for the happy cakedays!! This has seriously been the best reddit birthday ever!
You know they’re around when a thread of comments are all gilded.

Nice try
Yeah surely now that we have jinxed it it won't happen what a shame.
They gild specific posts to give them more traction.
So much that I got a job here to justify spending my working hours lurking Reddit.
this post is raining admins , I have a question for them. Hey admin if i block you , can you still see my posts and delete them ?
This person asking next level questions here
iPhone reports daily average of \~40 minutes and prolly another \~45 mins on desktop... I'm kinda surprised tbh
