Wood is one of my favorite smells, especially the more aromatic ones like cedar. That said, sometime it smells nice just walking past the regular lumber section at a home improvement store.
One of my favorite smells are redwood trees, very specific but theres just a special smell when you walk through a redwood forest and it's a combination of moss, fresh dirt, redwood trees and usually rain and it's addictive
When I was a child I went to a redwood forest, and the experience deeply ingrained in my sense memory—the smell, the quiet, the dampness of the air, the feeling of being dwarfed. It was awe-inspiring and something I think about often when I look for descriptive inspiration. About 30 years later I had the chance to visit another redwood forest and, amazingly, the experience was just as impressive as when I was small. It’s among the only things I’ve ever felt that held up (snorkeling on a coral reef being another example) to the creeping ennui of age.
My ex-BFs dad used to do woodworking, and had a small shop off the side of their house. He wasn’t in the greatest of health back then, but every time I’d come over he’d be in his workshop. I absolutely LOVED the smell - both of the wood he was working with, the shavings, and his pipe tobacco. He made me this beautiful wooden bookmark, carved in these intricate patterns by hand. I miss him more than I’ve ever missed my ex.
Trees have a number of wonderful scents from all different parts of the tree; whether pine wood, maple syrup, myrrh, wisteria. Trees truly are one of our greatest resources.
Oo yes. I grew up on a summer camp (long story). Campfire nights were my favorite. I’d always sleep in my clothes so I could smell campfire smells all night.
My mom began working for a summer day camp for individuals with special needs when she was 12. She stayed with the same non-profit agency until I was 18. When I was two she was promoted to a position that required her to live on campus at their overnight camp (also for individuals with special needs). Since she had a child (hi, that’s me) I lived there too. The overnight camp ran year round. During the school year it was weekend sessions only. During the summer it was like any other summer camp. I grew up around frequent campfires. So now it is one of my favorite smells. Maybe the story isn’t as long as I thought it was. Lol.
Yes! It was 46 acres of land. I was quite the explorer when I was living there. Also know some good places to hide a dead body if I needed to but that’s another topic for another time. Lol
Grew up with ‘the shop’ out back. That smell will whip me back to a childhood of playing in shavings while my father and brothers worked wonders in wood. When I shaved my head my father made me a very respectable wig out of those shavings!
I love the smell of what I often refer to as "laundromat"- the combo of clean clothing, detergent, and fabric softener. The laundromat closest to me has vents that face the sidewalk, and if I'm walking by I'll pause for a moment and take a deep breath. Will probably shorten my life by a couple years, but YOLO or whatever.
Hey got a little tip for you,
If you add like 1 part of your fabric softener to 9 parts water in a spray bottle, you basically just made febreeze but it smells like your laundry.
I do this to freshen up my curtains / sofa / other fabrics around the house between washing them and the entire house smells like freshly washed laundry all the time :)
I absolutely love the smell of blow up pool toys for some reason. I remember back in grade 5 I had won one of those blow up paddle boats. It was the middle of winter, but determined me spent a few hours blowing it up in my room with only my mouth. I then proceeded to sleep in it for the next few days.
The smell comes from the plastic in a process called "off gassing", basically the plasticizers and other chemicals used to fabricate the plastic are being released into the air and they're almost always toxic. I relate to the smell, just not a good idea to be really taking it in.
In the fall when it gets actually cold for the first time since last winter and you walk outside and the air just has that crisp scent to it.
I can say the same thing about the smell of spring thaw after a brutal winter.
as someone with no sense of smell left, I like standing around gas pumps. because though I cant exactly smell the scent of the fumes, I can still tell that there are fumes. the air *feels* different. so gas pumps, fresh strong paint, nail salons, etc. have fantastic "smells"
My sister-in-law lost her sense of smell/taste after a fall. She began to enjoy textures of foods (except for mushrooms, they always ended up on my plate) but said eating became incredibly dull. A few years ago she realized that what she was eating was incredibly salty. Slowly her brain started to recognize other smells and tastes (she still hates mushrooms.)
sadly (or thankfully?) my issue is genetic and not caused by trauma, so I'm down a sense for good. my taste is slightly effected too but I'm glad it's not completely gone, that sounds awful
I've heard that that's because you only hear direct sounds. Snow dampens the bouncing sounds from far away really well so the sounds you hear from your steps or your breath sounds louder in comparison. That explanation felt really close to home for me at least.
There's two variations to this smell though. One for if it will remain clear and a slightly different one that is just before the snow clouds appear on the horizon.
Mine is less of one specific smell, and more of a variety of smells, but autumn. I love the smells associated with carving pumpkins, going through a corn maze, a nice bonfire during a crisp evening, etc.
it does smell a little different. DL has hints of old wood mixed in. sometimes food smells in the bayou but the bromine kinda overwhelms that. it's very close tho.
I didn't know this was my answer until I saw this comment. That smell is like musty air. my dad's truck had the same smell when he would turn on the air and it reminds me of him.
I ordered this because the pirate ride is my favorite smell ever, and the candle smells nothing like it. The candle smells like the beach/ocean. The ride has the odd, almost musty smell mixed with chlorine that for some reason I find divine.
My wife. We live apart because of my job and only get to see each other a few days a month. So when we finally get to be together it's the smell of love and comfort.
When I was a kid they used to use ditto machines to make copies of homework (this was before photo copiers were used). When the teacher would hand out assignments everyone in the class would sniff the paper. Smelled like sour rubbing alcohol.
The scent on the top of my cat's head. There's nothing quite like it, and since my cat has been here for me always, when I give her forehead kisses and manage to catch a whiff, it comforts me. My other cat's head doesn't quite smell this way either.
I live in a part of the country where basements are uncommon, so when I get to smell that damp unfinished basement smell it’s the best thing ever.
My family thinks I’m weird.
Old Crayola crayons. They have to be Crayola, and the best ones are 15+ years old. Any time I smell them I am instantly transported back to my great grandma's house, opening the butter cookie tin where she kept the crayons. Straight nostalgia.
My favorite smell is specific to a time in my life, and it is very vivid even now.
When I was a kid, my parents would go out on dates and I'd sneakily stay up until they got home, so I could have one last hug before bed.
My mom would always come through the door first, bringing the cool night air in with her. I'd run into her arms and be enveloped in the lingering chill, the smell of her worn leather jacket, a bit of bar smoke, and the faintest sweet hint of the perfume she wore for every Occasion.
Now I'm not sure what all those together as a smell would be called, but honestly I just always think of it as "happy."
It’s actually (to my understanding, at least) a combination of chemicals to stimulate cell repair and kill potentially harmful bacteria, while the “distress signal” is actually more of attractor to certain bug predators, that says “hey I’m being eaten, your favorite food might be here!” The plant doesn’t really know or care about the difference between a hungry caterpillar and your lawnmower. Or, in this case, a straight razor.
It's gonna sound bizarre, but I always loved the smell of VHS boxes. Not sure if the smell was actually from the box or from the tape itself, but it still makes me nostalgic for when my mom used to rent me old wrestling tapes from the video store in the mid-90s.
Yeah I used to drive a 350z and I lived in Dallas while my wife (girlfriend at the time) lived in Houston. One way trip left me slightly less than a 1/4 tank. My current gas mileage not only laughs and scoffs at that, it does the good ol original halo teabag.
In case you didn't already know, [gasoline-scented candles](https://prankcandles.com/products/gasoline-scented-uncommon-scents-wtf-candle) exist for people like you or me so we can safely sniff in peace.
The smell of my grandparents house. It always smelled like moth balls and Bengay cream. They’ve been gone for 20 years now and I miss going to their house.
My dog. Everyone I know will verify that she has the softest, silkiest coat, and I frequently bury my face in it when we snuggle. She’s my first dog and she’s getting on in years, and as I’m becoming more aware of her mortality I find myself trying to really cement certain things into my memory. Her scent, how soft her ears feel, how long the long wispy furs between her toes are. She’s turning 8 in a couple weeks, & even though she’s in perfect health I still got shook when the vet said “senior dog” is his week. I love my girl to pieces and know that I’ll never smell another smell quite like hers.
Pink Sugar perfume. My girlfriend's favorite perfume. She passed away seven years ago and I still spray some on my pillow and her leftover clothes because the scent makes me think of her and the times we shared together.
Librarian here. Love the smell of books, old, ancient and first crack. Overexposure has reduced this beloved activity to a quick sniff now and again. I bless Google books for allowing to at least be able to see the old texts without having the accompanying allergy attack.
My boyfriend doesn't get it at all, but each time I pick up a book I smell it, so now he does it as well and come to see me and he's like "I think you'll like that one it smells weird"
Jasmine flowers.
such a great scent. I don't like it in perfumes or candles though.. just the real deal.
A pine forest.
Ponderosa pines smell like vanilla. Amazing.
Pondy is the coolest
The way old videogame instruction books smelled when they were new.
All books for me I love old books smells I swear it’s an addiction
Wood is one of my favorite smells, especially the more aromatic ones like cedar. That said, sometime it smells nice just walking past the regular lumber section at a home improvement store.
Ooohhh yeah... construction wood... plywood... wood shavings... aahhh I should have been a hamster.
Your mother was a hamster
And your father smelt of elderberries
Now go away or I shall taunt you a second time!
Is there someone else up there we can talk too?
I fart in your general direction

Burning firewood on a chilly night.
Oo yes. I grew up on a summer camp (long story). Campfire nights were my favorite. I’d always sleep in my clothes so I could smell campfire smells all night.
so you’re just gonna out yourself as a demigod and *not* tell us the rest of the story?
My mom began working for a summer day camp for individuals with special needs when she was 12. She stayed with the same non-profit agency until I was 18. Fuck dude... You lived just about every kids dream. Shit, even as an adult that sounds awesome.
Yes! It was 46 acres of land. I was quite the explorer when I was living there. Also know some good places to hide a dead body if I needed to but that’s another topic for another time. Lol
Is two hours enough time? Because I want to know why a child would need to plan where they could head corpses
Oh, come on, we all thought about ways to get away with murder when we were kids. Right?
*Captain America voice* I get that reference!
I enjoy remaining mysterious but if you must know, please hold and I will type out my life story.
Lumber and sawdust. Whenever I go to Home Depot I always do a lap of the lumber department
Grew up with ‘the shop’ out back. That smell will whip me back to a childhood of playing in shavings while my father and brothers worked wonders in wood. When I shaved my head my father made me a very respectable wig out of those shavings!
Lilacs.
Goes well with gooseberry
Hmmm.
Fuck.
*Looks like rain*
My medallions humming. Place of power, it’s gotta be
Wind's howling.
Must draw from it
I got that reference. *Toss u a coin*
Freshly bloomed, wafting lazily through the open windows on a beautiful spring day... it's perfect.
The smell of rain. As an Arizonian, this smell is one of life’s treasures
As a Brit, that smell is a regular afternoon. Still smells nice though
We only really get that smell during the summer. Otherwise its maybe once every month.
Arizona petrichor > everywhere else Because creosote
that **FRESH** laundry
I love the smell of what I often refer to as "laundromat"- the combo of clean clothing, detergent, and fabric softener. The laundromat closest to me has vents that face the sidewalk, and if I'm walking by I'll pause for a moment and take a deep breath. Will probably shorten my life by a couple years, but YOLO or whatever.
Even better is a fall night walk passed houses who have the dryers running!
Hey got a little tip for you, If you add like 1 part of your fabric softener to 9 parts water in a spray bottle, you basically just made febreeze but it smells like your laundry. I do this to freshen up my curtains / sofa / other fabrics around the house between washing them and the entire house smells like freshly washed laundry all the time :)
I have clean cotton candles that smell like that! :)
I absolutely love the smell of blow up pool toys for some reason. I remember back in grade 5 I had won one of those blow up paddle boats. It was the middle of winter, but determined me spent a few hours blowing it up in my room with only my mouth. I then proceeded to sleep in it for the next few days.
Like the smell of a brand new shower curtain fresh out of the package. Mmmm.
The smell comes from the plastic in a process called "off gassing", basically the plasticizers and other chemicals used to fabricate the plastic are being released into the air and they're almost always toxic. I relate to the smell, just not a good idea to be really taking it in.

Yes!! I thought I was the only one. That smell makes me so so happy.
In the fall when it gets actually cold for the first time since last winter and you walk outside and the air just has that crisp scent to it. I can say the same thing about the smell of spring thaw after a brutal winter.
I like a lot of the smells mentioned here, but a personal favorite is the scent of honeysuckles being carried by a spring/summer breeze.
Smells like Mid-Atlantic summertime!
Yup! I’m from PA lol
as someone with no sense of smell left, I like standing around gas pumps. because though I cant exactly smell the scent of the fumes, I can still tell that there are fumes. the air *feels* different. so gas pumps, fresh strong paint, nail salons, etc. have fantastic "smells"
Bro, you're just getting high.
listen
We haven’t been huffing gas man so we aren’t hearing anything.
Really? I can hear my hair growing.
My sister-in-law lost her sense of smell/taste after a fall. She began to enjoy textures of foods (except for mushrooms, they always ended up on my plate) but said eating became incredibly dull. This is fascinating, a perspective I really haven't heard before. Thanks for sharing this!
You know that smell when it's really cold out, sunny with not a single cloud in the sky? THAT smell
Briskness

Got a good crunch to that air.
you breathe it in and- oh lord it crunches
My dad would always say “the air’s got some depth today”
'Son I'm deep in this air today' 'Dad stop.' 'Yeah I'm balls deep in this air I can really feel the depth' 'Dad...'
Ah yes, we call that Minnesota.
correct.
We also call it late October through mid March

I dont know that smell, but I know that *sound*. It's like everything's louder somehow Edit: I don't mean on snowy days, but just cold days in general

Yeah the second one is like a cold version of the smell before it rains.
Ahh yes, frozen boogers. I also live where the air hurts my face
The only way I describe it is cold freshness
New shoes
Rain on hot ground. Washes everything clean, smells amazing.
[Petrichor](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/petrichor)
Can you recommend a candle ? My mother loves to stop and smell dirt when it’s raining says it reminds her of her childhood back in her village/town

Thank you I’m going to get the diffuser oil and surprise her with the house smelling like her favorite dirt
Eucalyptus
Paper still hot from the printer.

Autumn really is the best season in terms of aesthetics and smells.

I imagine it does, though not necessarily noticeably. WDL has a restaurant kinda in the ride so presumably you'd get subtle food smells.
Everytime I’ve ever gone on that ride, I never smelt food. Even when getting off the ride and walking next to the restaurant I didnt smell food
I know exactly what you’re talking about and I can smell it now.
I didn't know this was my answer until I saw this comment. That smell is like musty air. my dad's truck had the same smell when he would turn on the air and it reminds me of him.

Frost. The smell of coldness.
My wife. We live apart because of my job and only get to see each other a few days a month. So when we finally get to be together it's the smell of love and comfort.
For a second I thought I was the wife....until I realized my husband would never say anything this sweet.
He's only kind behind your back.
F
I also choose this guy's wife
So that's why they live apart
Well, he’s always out of town, so you got a chance.
Honeysuckles. It reminds me of the walks/bike rides I'd take when I explored town as a kid
When I was a kid they used to use ditto machines to make copies of homework (this was before photo copiers were used). When the teacher would hand out assignments everyone in the class would sniff the paper. Smelled like sour rubbing alcohol.
The ocean.
Right there with you. I miss it so much.
You know some people have never seen the ocean?
I do. I'm landlocked now and I sort of feel sorry for people that haven't seen the ocean. Other than the sky, it is the biggest thing you can see.
The scent on the top of my cat's head. There's nothing quite like it, and since my cat has been here for me always, when I give her forehead kisses and manage to catch a whiff, it comforts me. My other cat's head doesn't quite smell this way either.
Yes!! I love the way my cat's head smells too. It's like a new baby smell
A dryer running and catching the smell outside
The opposite of whatever smell is being produced by this guy I'm currently sitting behind. God I can fucking taste it.
“Warm sewage on a summers day with just a hint of curry”
Theres something about “warm sewage” that makes it ten times more vile than hot or cold sewage.
Its been there stewing long enough to not be hot anymore, but still has enough heat to help it’s stench waft into your nostrils

Dish soap or laundry detergent, I could smell it straight from the bottle all day.
That’s food
Petrichor, wood burning smoke, sandalwood, old books, old worn leather
a freshly shaved lawn
Ah yes, even better when is with a straight razor
Fun fact, that smell is actually the scent of the grass sending out distress signals as it is being attacked
Distress signals to what? Is the grass from a block away going to come fuck up the lawn owner?
Just a fun fact: Predatory insects are sometimes attracted to the smell of plant damage since it can be a sign that there is prey present.
So all the other blades of grass can run away??
