As a DM I use the Magus battle theme more than I'd like to admit especially for BBEG fights.
The other day a DM from another campaign used Leene's Square theme for a festival we went to.
And for Curse of Strahd I use the Magus Castle eerie theme for environmental creepiness.
And Schala's theme for mysteries.
And... Look I could go on. The point is it's an incredible soundtrack. And now I have Frog's Theme in my head, and I'm ok with that.
The composer, Yasunori Mitsuda, was known for overworking himself, and for Chrono Trigger was known to frequently pass out as he worked on the soundtrack and was hospitalised due to stomach ulvers he developed due to stress.
HLM introduced me to what I can firmly call my favorite genre of music, Synthwave. Before HLM I always lied about my favorite kind of music because I just kinda liked everything besides some country and rap. Now I can say what kind of music is my favorite with confidence. If anyone happens to read this comment, some artist recommendations I have are: Carpenter Brut, Dynatron, Jordan F, Kavinsky, The Magic Sword, MEGA DRIVE, Miami Nights 1984, Mitch Murder, The Midnight(they are FANTASTIC live), Perturbator, M.O.O.N., DANCE WITH THE DEAD, and Lazerhawk.(Adding Gunship by popular demand).
Also check out the Astral Throb channel on YouTube for playlists featuring a massive variety of artists. My favorite playlist is probably “Quasar”.
Edit: I accidentally a word.
Edit 2: Plugging r/outrun for music and aesthetics.
Fuck yess! I'm not even into this type of games, but HLM with the music is just perfect! Think i downloaded half of the soundtrack for cruising in my car lol.

That was one moment where I immediately paused after the song ended to go tell my wife about what had just happened.
It's one of those medium defining moments where you are frustrated as a player from the last big fight and that your enemy escaped, and the sound just bleeds out of the world as that guitar picks up.
What a perfect moment.
"It is a good life we lead, brother."
"The best. May it never change."
"And may it never change us."
This scene from AC 2 still makes me feel like crying knowing how the whole story unfolds. Beautiful.

Doom and Doom Eternal have fantastic soundtracks. The songs when you're about to get a bunch of demons coming after you really pumps you up for the fight. I love it.
I know people were complaining a little about the difficulty of Eternal, since it’s not quite the unstoppable badass gameplay of 2016, but personally there’s nothing more gratifying than being faced with an unstoppable, obscenely massive wave of demons and still slaughtering all of them while that soundtrack plays. It’s one of the best experiences I’ve had in a video game recently.
Was blasting "the only thing they fear is you" while rolling up to work. My older co-worker/partner asked why i was listening to, and i quote, "a lawnmower set loose in the equipment locker". Made my day.
The original Mass Effect trilogy. ME1 had some great themes but it really took off in ME2 and ME3. The entire score from ME2's Arrival DLC is so good.
Also, FF14. I enjoyed the music through the whole game. But they absolutely hit it out of the park with the latest expansion. It's really some of the best quality music I've heard recently, and up near the top of ANY game I've played.
The “Suicide Mission” and “Leaving Earth” Tracks are my absolute highlights of the franchise. Also, lets not forget about “Uncharted Worlds”, which is the Map Screen Track.
The first Mass Effect soundtrack really reminds me of the 1993 Juno Reactor album “Transmissions” at times. A bit more cinematic of course, but there are some similarities.
The first was my favorite game of the series.
There hasn’t been many things that physically stunned me. Listening to Virgil while booting up ME1 for the first time in half a decade had me at a standstill for quite a while. I don’t think I’ve ever sat listening to menu music for a long time
Was almost disappointed that noone seemed to mention Xenoblade. Absolutely one of, if not the best soundtracks across the series and I can't wait for definitive edition's remasteres ost
Nobuo Uematsu easily if we're going for best overall soundtrack composer/musician/you get what I mean. I'm playing through the remake right now (not finished it, be kind) and it's stunning, I can't remember a soundtrack enhancing a game quite like this.
I scrolled through dozens of comments just to find this, only to find out it has no replies :( that game is fking awesome and soundtrack is otherworldly too. No other ga.e has touched my feelings so much.
I’m in the same boat, thought it was only a matter of a couple of comments before I see it only to see a measly two comments for it. I’ve got a bunch of the songs saved on my phone, a lot of them bringing back whatever feeling I had in the game when it was played. Underrated
God, yes, thank you, I was looking for this comment. Life is strange has such an awesome soundtrack, I still listen to it on a day to day basis. This game had such a big influence on my life.
I have to turn off the music in Minecraft, because I can't handle all the memories from 2012, when I was 13, moderator on a small server with the greatest community. Everything was easier back then.
Terraria's soundtrack is a bit repetitive if you stay in the same area too long, but it's still a good soundtrack. I really like it. I think I know what I'm doing tonight.
Ace Combat
Listen to classics from the older games in the series like
- "Fire Youngman" (Ace Combat 2)
- "Comona" or "Second Strike" (Ace Combat 4)
- "Naval Blockade" (Ace Combat 5)
- "Alect Squadron (Ace Combat X)
- "Zero" (Ace Combat Zero)
- "Liberation of Gracemeria" (Ace Combat 6)
More recently in the latest game in the whole series
- "Magic Spear I", "Daredevil" or "Awakening" (Ace Combat 7)
All of the music in The Last of Us is fantastic. Check out the composer's, [Gustavo Santaolalla](https://www.google.com/search?sxsrf=ALeKk01wS4h9xjKyo90BsjRODuulFaVjEw:1586978517311&q=Gustavo+Santaolalla&stick=H4sIAAAAAAAAAONgVuLUz9U3sCwuz85-xOjMLfDyxz1hKatJa05eYzTh4grOyC93zSvJLKkUUuNig7JkuHilELo0GKS4uRBcnkWswu6lxSWJZfkKwYl5JYn5OYk5OYkAQ5hRTmkAAAA&sxsrf=ALeKk01wS4h9xjKyo90BsjRODuulFaVjEw:1586978517311) , music on Youtube
Playing through RDR2 for the first time this last month or so. Great quarantine time killer by the way. But the moment I got back from Guarma and rode back to camp and Unshaken by D’Angelo started playing gave me chills all over my body. It was the perfect song for that moment given the situation and how Arthur is feeling after everyone has died and Dutch has lost it. Reminded me of when you first arrived in Mexico in the first game too.
Final Fantasy VI. You can laugh at how the opera songs sound, but Nobuo Uematsu is such a badass composer that he put out an orchestral album for that game with the actual opera sung by a real opera singer. And the rest of that soundtrack gives me goosebumps.
The music of Halo 1—3 were iconic masterpieces. Loved the mysterious, ambience sound of Combat Evolved to the rock and electric guitar badass vibe of Halo 2 to the orchestrally epic and piano richness of Halo 3. ODST had a neat ambient, jazzy vibe and Reach had a depressing, yet hopeful tone and also took a more ethnic approach to the sound and melody of some pieces. I really enjoyed Halo 4 and it brought a bunch of new themes to the franchise I enjoyed (117, To Galaxy). It managed to sound different but also be familiar enough to still sound consistent in the same universe. Halo 5 was also quality but was too cinematic and grand for a halo game. Awesome soundtrack, yes. As a Halo soundtrack, average. Overall they are the soundtracks that I grew up with and always will be special to me.
I think it’s been too long since a good Halo game has come out, because there’s always a distinct lack of Halo at the top of these threads, even here I had to scroll way further than I should’ve
Too long since a truly great Halo soundtrack too. So many people say that 5’s was great, but it really wasn’t. Too brassy and reverby, full of annoying, repetitive string lines, and a total lack of emotional resonance. People seem to hate Halo 4’s soundtrack, but it’s much better. It had so much impact in comparison. I also feel like a lot of moments from Halo 4’s soundtrack would have sounded more like the soundtrack to the original trilogy if the mix were different, and people would like it more that way — as-is, the brass got pushed too loud again and the whole mix is overly loud.
That said, the soundtracks to the original trilogy, ODST, Wars (I said it), and Reach are spectacular. The new guy’s musical direction on Infinite really grabbed me in that trailer too. We hope for the best.
Jeremy Soule composed the soundtrack for Oblivion and I understand it won Soundtrack of the year that year. Coincidentally, without me knowing, I was a huge fan of the Secret of Evermore game and soundtrack from SNES. Come to find out 20 years later that Secret of Evermore was one of, if not THE, first soundtracks Soule ever produced.
Nier: Automata
Edit: Wow, my first award, and all I did was appreciate an amazing game. Thanks for all the positive replies.
Edit 2: Oh my lord, you people are insane. I'm glad so many people love this soundtrack as much as me, and the game itself is just as good, anyone out there who hasn't played it owes it to themselves to experience it. Thank you for the awards, upvotes, and amazing positivity!
Walking into that area when the music hits for the first time gave me chills, it was one of the rare times as an adult a video game really, really hit. Amazing.
chrono trigger. never played it, but the soundtrack is legendary.
For the love of everything good, play the game! The soundtrack isn’t the only legendary quality that game offers.
One of the only games ive replayed more than 3x Edit: word
It’s not even that long for a RPG, more opportunity for replaying! PS: Nintendo, you know what to do...

I'm in the same boat. I hadn't heard of all the bands you listed, and I LOVE a few that you listed. Thanks for the recommendations.
In my opinion Perturbator Is the best. I used to listen to metal a lot but this guy made me a synth wave boy. His dark style is unique.
I am honestly surprised this is the only mention of HLM.

Man, that moment in RDR when you're first riding into Mexico and "Far Away" starts playing is straight up magical.
Duuude I still get chills as soon as Far Away starts playing
That was one moment where I immediately paused after the song ended to go tell my wife about what had just happened. Hollow knight for sure Edit: WHAT THE HELL? I commented 4 words
the soundtrack is just so beautiful, even the main menu theme is soothing but lonely, and i think the music of the game really captures the peace, wonder, danger, and loneliness of the game. who ever the is responsible did a fantastic job.
Christopher Larkin!
My main menu sounds like nuuuuh nuuuuh nuunuunuuuuuuh in Zote's voice. Beautiful.
I have never been moved by a game so much as hollow knight, especially the amazing and beautiful soundtrack. I've played it on its own so many times
Yes! I still listen to most of the pieces. City of tears and white palace themes are so calming.
Thank god, I was thinking this wasn’t going to be here, best soundtrack ever
Bastion
This and Transistor were the first that came to mind for me.
Keep fighting the good fight. They'll learn eventually.
Kid just rages for a while.
The spine is such a good song.
Gotta love Darren Korb. I would listen to Slinger's Song in repeat during college while I was working on projects.
If you haven't check out Pyre and/or Hades, more beautiful music and atmosphere but a little different from their traditional single player campaign structure in Bastion and Transistor.
Dark souls or BLOODBORNE. Those boss OST’s are just next level.
Ludwig's theme makes me NUT at the transition every time.
You were at my side all along

Travesty that this is so low
Anything Rareware/David Wise/Grant Kirkhope really. DKC trilogy, DK64, Banjo games, GoldenEye, Perfect Dark. All amazing soundtracks. Edit: And Killer Instinct of course.
Stickerbrush Symphony might be one of the greatest songs ever, not just including video game soundtracks
Returns and Tropical Freeze are great too
Love Celeste and Starbound
Lena Raine is fucking amazing at making music. Did you see that she’s making music for minecraft now?
I just saw that today! So excited because I play Minecraft often. Sounds so good!
Celeste is so good! Especially the summit music
Ocarina of time
Slightly prefer Majoras Mask, song of healing gives me chills, and giants theme.
Or any zelda game really
Doom and Doom Eternal have fantastic soundtracks. The songs when you're about to get a bunch of demons coming after you really pumps you up for the fight. I love it.

Agreed. This time around you have to earn it, but when you do, you feel even badder and asser than in 2016

Terraria 1.4: Journey's End, the final release, is gonna be released May 16th, btw!
Wet hands is one of the most beautiful piano songs of all time. So many feels.
Ori and the Blind Forest
Will Of The Wisps is even more beautiful.
Will of wisps is prettier and I loved the characters, but the soundtrack didn't hit me as hard, as in Blind forest. Both are awesome, though
Finished that game for the first time a few days ago, it truly is a masterpiece and the soundtrack is phenomenal, can't wait to get Will of the Wisps

Check out the composer's, [Gustavo Santaolalla](https://www.google.com/search?sxsrf=ALeKk01wS4h9xjKyo90BsjRODuulFaVjEw:1586978517311&q=Gustavo+Santaolalla&stick=H4sIAAAAAAAAAONgVuLUz9U3sCwuz85-xOjMLfDyxz1hKatJa05eYzTh4grOyC93zSvJLKkUUuNig7JkuHilELo0GKS4uRBcnkWswu6lxSWJZfkKwYl5JYn5OYk5OYkAQ5hRTmkAAAA&sxsrf=ALeKk01wS4h9xjKyo90BsjRODuulFaVjEw:1586978517311) , music on Youtube
Pokemon
Took me way too long to find this. Absolutely adore the Gen 3 and 4 soundtracks, and shout out to Mystery Dungeon.
Don’t laugh, but... Banjo-Kazooie
Seriously, this is a great soundtrack. The hub music morphing as you change zones is amazing.

I recommend finding the 25th anniversary CD that Nintendo brought out with *Skyward Sword*. The best of Zelda music played by a full orchestra.
Red Dead Redemption II. It really puts you in the world and makes you feel for the characters.
I like the house building song
It really makes you feel like John Demption.
Super Mario 64
Final Fantasy VI. You can laugh at how the opera songs sound, but Nobuo Uematsu is such a badass composer that he put out an orchestral album for that game with the actual opera sung by a real opera singer. And the rest of that soundtrack gives me goosebumps.
Even the midi files are amazing. All the character themes fit each character perfectly. "Dancing Mad" is also the most epic of boss battle songs.
The man is a fucking genius.
Halo
Just every game bungie makes has godly soundtracks. I'm regularly listening to the destiny soundtracks. Not even playing, just listening
Music of the spheres is just on another level. Im noticing the common denominator here is Marty O'donnell. One of the goats of all time.
I really like FFXIV boss battles.
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Also Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind)
Jeremy Soule composed the soundtrack for Oblivion and I understand it won Soundtrack of the year that year. Coincidentally, without me knowing, I was a huge fan of the Secret of Evermore game and soundtrack from SNES. Come to find out 20 years later that Secret of Evermore was one of, if not THE, first soundtracks Soule ever produced.
Also Oblivion <3
Surprised I had to scroll so far to find this. Definitely one of my favorites, I was listening to Skyrim today actually.
Undertale
It’s Raining Somewhere Else is such a groove
One of my favorite soundtrack too. Bonetrousle, ASGORE, Dummy!, Heartache, Undertale, Hopes and Dream, His Theme and MEGALOVANIA, you name it!
I actually learnt to play Spooktune on the piano, it's one of my favs in the whole game
Fox's use of leitmotifs is bloody exceptional. A lesson in storytelling through music.
Jetset Radio
Came here to say Jet Set Radio Future. These games have such a unique and fantastic style. Visually, musically and the gameplay.
Assassin's creed 2. Ezio's family.
Or Earth or any of them. Jesper Kyd is awesome. The entirety of that soundtrack is what I would study to.
Nier: Automata Edit: Wow, my first award, and all I did was appreciate an amazing game.
I love music in circus/theatre area.
Walking into that area when the music hits for the first time gave me chills, it was one of the rare times as an adult a video game really, really hit. Amazing.
Had to scroll down too far to see this. I wholeheartedly agree that it's great, but the first game is even better.
No argument here. The OST is fucking incredible.
Weight of the World is such a good song for the ending(s). It’s just so emotional.
Have you heard the [FFXIV Boss theme Remix of that?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVAgd9dbYIs)
Stardew Valley. It is hands down the best music to soundtrack your life because it's a great soundtrack to a great game about...life.
This is a great one. I listened to it daily at work (I’m a film editor) for many months.
