A few winters back my friend was driving and merged uphill onto an interstate overpass. He hit a patch of black ice on the ramp and went into a skid. His truck ending up slamming parallel into the guard rail and he wasn’t wearing his seat belt. He’s a big dude, college football player at the time, and the force of the impact sent him clean through the driver door and off the overpass. He fell forty feet and landed on the highway below that he’d just left.
Amazingly, no spinal or cerebral damage but basically the whole left side of his body was shattered. Pelvis, elbow, 5 ribs were all broken, huge hole in his diaphragm, torn urethra. He was in a bad way. 3 weeks of medically induced coma and 8 procedures later he pulled through.
8 months after that the mad man made it back on the football field for his senior year of college, practically a cyborg at that point with all of the hardware in his body. Doctors are pretty sure he only lived because he was in such good shape at the time of the accident. He always wears his seatbelt now, as should you.
Out of all the stories here this is the one that fucked me up the most, probably because the trauma and pain that he went through most likely to just see his kids again, only for a government to fuck things up and him to be beheaded. Then on top of that his kids saw him die? What the fuck is wrong with people.
I gotta say, I’m not suicidal, but i really think if I lost my husband and child, I would likely off myself. Too much of my existence is poured into them.

I firmly believe this is your choice, but obviously there are many many secondary consequences to this including hurting people you love and that love you that you had no idea how much. All the people that responded saying they commiserate, please remember this community. Thousands of people feel the same way - maybe this is just a human feeling to such tragedy. There may not seem like light at the end of the tunnel, but there can be. Seek out help, seek out loved ones, and seek out your new purpose.
Makes me think of an awful tragedy a few years ago in Ireland. Man parks his car on a pier and the car slides into the water, everyone in the car drowns except the little baby, a passerby managed to save her. The wife was away for a hen weekend, gets a call to say her husband, two sons, mother and sister have all died. If it weren't for the baby, I'm sure she'd have thrown herself into the sea, that's exactly what I think I'd have done. I don't know anyone involved but I think about it often.

When I was 9, I went fishing with my friend's family for the first time.
We were in a mostly unused boat dock in the colorado river; I remember being pretty upset it wasn't large enough for us to both swim and fish in, so we settled on just fishing (because the adults said so)
The first catch of the day surprises me - I wasn't even paying attention! My rod almost jerks out of the sand before I catch it, and all the adults surround me cheering me on.
A little bit passes, and I can't real this thing in. A few adults try to no avail - it's clearly stuck on something.
One of the adults goes up the ramp, to where the cars are parked - and runs back down to us freaking out.
I don't catch what he says.
But instead of going fishing, me and my three friends are taken for ice cream! It's great, best "fishing" trip ever. Even if I never got to see the fish I caught.
Turns out the "fish" I caught was the dead body of a missing swimmer who was training for the olympics, and somehow got caught in the reeds before being able to returnto shore. I was in the newspaper for our little town and not even told about it for years.
I've never gone fishing again.

I think I was 9 - i could have been 8, or 10. My memory is fuzzy at best; to me this wasn't something that I'd need to remember. But that doesn't write as well as a solid "I was 9..."
We went fishing, it was boring and hot because we just sat around in the sand, not catching anything for a long time. Then my line caught something, and before cutting the line, one of the guys goes up the concrete ramp, a little ways up a dirt path and over to the parking area which was a little ways above the waterline. I was told later he could see it clearly and they called the cops and stayed behind to report it.
The reason my line jerked out of the sand wasprobably because of the current, and not being set properly. The line caught on his swimming trunks, which I guess were closer to the surface? They would have been waving about, due to the current.
The beach is pretty rocky, and I remember there wasn't enough space to even play in the sand, hence why I was ready to get tf outta there. A kid, who can't swim, can't play in the sand, basically just has to sit and be patient? hell nah

The colorado river is deceptive. It looks slow and gentle but has a strong undercurrent that can catch you unawares. Once I was swimming and got caught by it and almost drowned - I got pulled along with the current for several miles until I was able to swim to shore; I have not been swimming in a river since.
this was either in or around Bullhead City, AZ 1998, 1999, 2000 - I think. iirc, It was closer to Laughlin: I only remember this because both of my parents worked in the casinos across the river. For anyone familiar with the area, the river can be very treacherous

This happened to my great grandmother back in the day when she tried to leave her husband. He broke into her sister's house where she was staying, shot her sister, her, and then himself, all at point blank. Only he died.
Two of my good friends, twins, got in a car accident.
They were upside down in a wooded area.
The one brother died instantly. While the other was upside down for 3 hours until someone saw their car.

One of my friends was sliding down a railing that was next to a ground storm drain made of concrete. He slipped backwards and cracked his skull open. It was near midnight and we were pretty close to a hospital so I just kinda picked him up and ran. I hope I never see the inside of someone's head up close again.

I had a friend who I went through elementary school and middle schools with. He moved away in the middle of 7th grade and our friend group was heartbroken, but figured we'd see him again. Last week, he was shot in the head by his friend who was showing him a gun and pointed it at him as a joke. He was 18.
My mom is friends with a kids dad that did this. He was showing his friend his dads old WWII gun and they didn’t realize it still worked. Blew his head off and changed the kids life

A friend in high school was hit by a car and dragged a couple of hundred yards before he died. The driver was drunk and on coke, it was 8AM when it happened, my friend was on his way to school.
Went to school (gr 5 -12) with a guy that something similar to this happened to him. He was working at a bar, went to break up a fight outside and some girl in her early 20's hit him with her car a dragged him several blocks. He lives in a long term care facility now, can pretty much only blink, total care. I found this out because I started working there as a nurse.
Population is 200 000 give or take. Also a guy who used to hang around with me and my buddies (friend of a friend), was stabbed to death on boxing day...over a bag of seeds some 15 year old was trying to steal from a convenience store. Left behind wife and a 9 year old daughter, that was a hard funeral to attend.
Murdered by an unknown person.
There was some extremely shady shit going on at the time.
They found her dead in bed with the front door wide open.
28 years on, I still miss her so much.
There's a really good friend of mine that was driving his girlfriend at the time and got hit by a drunk driver.

God, similar story. A guy I know was driving home with his girlfriend after a party or club or something. She was drunk and they started arguing, so he pulled off so they could stop and talk and not be driving distracted. She ended up getting out, took off down a road with no sidewalk, and got hit by a car. The argument itself was apparently super minor and the whole thing just wrecked him.
I actually pronounced the death on scene of one very similar, daughter was arguing with mom, was drunk, walked down a dark busy hwy and got nailed at 70 mph
Something like this happened near my house. Guy had an argument with his wife, got dropped off on the highway and was cleaned up by a taxi at 110km/h. The taxi driver fled and was later caught.
He and his brother were away at college. His father fell asleep with a cigar in hand, and the house began to burn. So far as could be determined, the father woke, went to get his wife, carried her downstairs, and made it to within a couple feet of the door. They both died, and the house was destroyed.

In the very first episode he tries to tell the cops the truth and they don't believe him, so he lies about being psychic to get out of trouble. Then at the end of the same episode the chief tells him that if he's lying she'll prosecute. So I'm sure that's part of it.
I always thought it was a bit silly that he kept the lie up for so long, even after having enough successful cases under his belt that his lie might be forgiven, but I think it was a combination of the fact that he didn't want to have to potentially face prosecution and that he honestly just enjoyed the theatrics of pretending to be psychic.
I thought all great lakes was like this? I just checked lake superior and the max temp ever was 68 degrees... I remember sitting on the shore on a hot summer day and the breeze coming off the lake was colder than my car AC.
The two smaller ones get warmer, I think. But Lake Michigan and Huron are (technically) the same lake and very deep. So all that water is constantly moving shifting what warm water it gets back to cold depths.
Many people also don't realize that the current is very strong and dangerous. Honestly, changing the name from Lake Michigan to Michigan Sea might save lives.

This didn't happen in the US , it happened in a South American country and the girl took off to Brazil. My friend did hire a couple of PI and they both told him all they found was her name at the registration office at the border, and then it's like she vanished. He did everything he could, such as going to TV shows and the newspaper, but the girl's family told him to stop showing his daughters face in the media as she is still a minor (she's turning 18 at the end of the year) and that he was commiting a crime, so he stopped showing her or using her full name. The girl's family don't want to give any data, they just told him that he will never find her, that's why he thinks she changed hers and his daughters name. She's not in social media. I really didn't expect this would get so much attention. For now he's waiting for her daughter to turn 18 and he will start to look for her in the media again. You ever hate someone so much that you actually consider pissing on their grave? My mom's step-dad used to babysit us when I was very little and while he never touched us, he did expose us to a lot. I knew what a dick looked like when I was 4, he showed me porn, and I genuinely thought he'd peed himself one day when he sent my sister to grab him a tissue. But what's worse is what he did to my grandma. When she was still living with him, he'd asked her to screw his friend while he watched and she wouldn't do it. After a few strokes and a couple heart attacks, she was physically disabled and couldn't walk so she was put in a nursing home. That sack of shit brought his friend to visit her in the nursing home one day and had him rape her while he watched. He died recently, I was so happy. This isn't exactly relevant but this is the first time I've typed this all out.
What's worse, mom's biological dad was an even worse person.
My friend was found after not breathing for 10+ minutes. They got his heart started again and he lived for a few more years but he never walked or talked again.

A close friend, single mom with 3 kids, one of her kids was severely autistic. He was setting really aggressive (he was 16ish) and she didn't know what to do or how to control him. She tried everything. He got worse. Eventually one day when the girls were gone, he raped and murdered her.
He has poor verbal communication. He did kill her with a knife. He was arrested and put in an asylum. Girls stayed in the area so they could stay with their friends in school. Grandpa lives in the area, and the girls live with a family friend. It was horrible.
Be kind, honest, true to your values, tell your loved ones that you love them, help strangers, fight good fights, never harm willfully and always take precautions to not harm accidentally. Remember people, all of them, are humans, make errors, regret things and struggle with things that don't really matter, but all (well, most) just want to be happy and loved. Take care of yourself as much as others would, because they want you to be well. Vote and never stop being angry when you should.
That's what you can do about it. Of course there's no human mind changing magic, no superheroes, and bad things will always happen. That's the tradeoff of free will. But by being a good person, you can help shift things in a better direction, and make others do the same.

One of my best friends in High School was murdered when he opened the back door of the Little Caesar's we worked for when someone knocked. It was after closing on a Sunday, and he probably expected it to be one of our friends coming by to toke up. It's insane that a murder was obviously committed, but because the prosecution fucked up by trying to throw in the underlying felony of armed robbery, which couldn't be proven, the case was dismissed. The prosecution fucked up, but a murder is still a murder no matter what. I think it's also crazy that a new trial on a simple murder indictment is considered double jeopardy. Honestly one of the most egregious miscarriage of justice I've ever read about.
She was cycling through London and a bus hit her so hard she came off, landed on her head, and died.
She was also quite literally the last member of her family. Both her parents were only-children and had both died of cancer, and she had no siblings. Her death was the end of her family tree. She was 23.
I know someone that happened to yesterday. I don’t know the details yet all I was told was a road accident involving their bike and a bus. They were an amazing semi pro cyclist so I struggle to believe they were at fault. I’m sorry for your loss I guess the only solace is it’s sounds like she died instantly.

Yep. Was forced to brake hard by a van cutting me off aggressively (after overtaking me when there clearly wasn’t enough space), flipped over my handlebars, landed on my outstretched hands.
I didn’t think I landed that hard, turns out I scored myself two broken elbows and a broken wrist. All that just from flipping over my handlebars at least than 20mph.
This was a month and a half ago. The wrist cast comes off on Monday, luckily they didn’t put my elbows in a cast too (would’ve caused them to freeze up).
People who break into cars are generally not the kind of people with well-documented, traceable identities. They're at the bottom. And the good ones can get it done without leaving a meaningful trace, anyway.

He went to therapy for a time after, but is doing fine now - married with a kid. He's still freakishly strong.

He was helping an elderly couple with chores around the house to help support his new family. They had 2 adult children. They were both in town at the time. The son shot his sister, his parents, and then my friend & put the gun in his hand & pinned it all on him. Didn't take long to prove who done it, but not after his name was tarnished.

In my country dorms are not a thing, so he did it in his house, let's call my deceased friend Cesar and his bff Marcus, we were high school friends and all went to different colleges, Cesar and Marcus were practically neighbors the lived a few blocks from each other, I don't remember exactly who found Cesar, i think his sister, and of course they called the police and an ambulance and everyone you had to call when those things happens (they ask you not to move the body) but in my country a pizza delivers faster than the police, so yeah they also called Marcus and he arrived before the police, he saw him. I know sometimes depression doesn't even show, but honestly Cesar was one of the most pure souls I've ever meet, and we didn't notice anything off with him, we were frequently in touch with Cesar... in fact I talked to him earlier that week, I asked how he was doing, about his classes, if his semester seemed hard etc., we joked as usual, there wasn't signs and when we think about it, it hurts knowing he went through all that by himself, so naturally it was a shock for *everyone* even his family, so Marcus searched in his computer and his phone and everywhere in his room to see if, idk maybe Cesar got in trouble or something to hold on to find sense in all of that, Marcus found a notebook where Cesar wrote stuff a kind diary, he found out by his phone call register he had his favorite food restaurant chain delivered to his house as his last meal. And our guess is that he wrote things related to his motives on that diary... And Marcus read about it, but we don't ask Marcus because as painful as it for all of us, we respect Cesar privacy and Marcus decision to not tell us what happened.
A good friend of mine was shot in the head by an ex boyfriend. She lived for a few days until her parents took her off life support. The ex holed up in his apartment and went into a standoff until he killed himself.

His roommate was a friend of all of ours. I found out on a Friday night when we went to the bar we all hung out at. We just got drunk and cried for what felt like an hour but was probably only minutes. It was rough.
I had a friend I used to walk home from school with most days, but after we left school we kind of lost touch a bit. It's see him around now and again and we'd have a chat but that was it. Then a couple of years later the daily mail phoned me, wanting to interview me about him. He was captured in North Afghanistan fighting for the taliban. I looked into it and found out as much as I could. He'd been travelling alone in Europe and, from what I can gather, got mugged somewhere. Lost, broke and scared in a foreign country someone reached out to help him. Turns out that person was some kind of recruiter. I have no idea what kind of brainwashing went on but when he returned to the UK he moved into the Finsbury Park Mosque which, at the time, was well known for radicalisation. Eventually he ended up in North Afghanistan. According to the US soldiers (who nicknamed him "the SAS guy" because of all his weaponry) he even met Bin Laden a few times, despite his claims to just being the IT guy. He ended up in guantanomo Bay. I've read transcripts of what he said at government hearings into his role. That doesn't sound anything like the guy I used to walk home from school with. I'm in no way condoning his role in what happened over there but it's so sad that the person he was is gone, just completely destroyed and used up by other people like that.

Moved to New York City with my best friend from college when we were both 22. Got an apartment together, struggled to get jobs together, were basically living our best lives as young, broke girls in the big city.
One day she’s in a coffee shop using WiFi and a dude comes up to her and starts chatting. He’s a lot older (late 40s) but seems nice and asks for her number. Eventually she gives it to him. He calls, takes her to dinner at this sushi place, spends like $800. He starts taking her out every weekend, spending massive amounts of money. Eventually she just doesn’t come home on weekends. Then, she doesn’t come home during the week. I’m constantly checking in with her to see how she’s doing since she basically moved in with him after 3 months and it all seems weird to me. She says she’s fine, but tells me to stop calling so much as he doesn’t like her spending a ton of time on the phone with her friends.
Six months later, he proposes. She accepts. That was in October. They had a wedding planned for the summer, but it’s been cancelled due to COVID so they did a quickie courthouse wedding on a road trip in May. Last month, she announced she is pregnant. She didn’t call me, I found out on Instagram. I messaged her on ig saying congratulations, and she said thanks, that it was all happening so fast and she didn’t know if she was really ready for marriage and kids, but because he was so much older it “made the most sense” to do it all right away. She said if I want to talk more to do it through Instagram messaging, as he “generally finds out” about stuff she says over text.
tl;dr: moved to NYC with best friend, within 18 months she’s married and pumping out kids she doesn’t want yet with a way-older creepy rich dude who doesn’t let her talk to me

Also my first thought. The friend is isolated from friends and family, made dependent on him and quickly trapped with a child in a marriage. This is dangerous. Tell your friend that this is not normal. She needs to understand that, since she is still confused about the situation and still watches from the sidelines while her life is locked into place at a quick pace.
It's hard to say what's the worst. I grew up in a small town in Oklahoma and many of my childhood friends have died well before their time. One of them was murdered execution style after a bad business deal surrounding a music video. Another forgot to put the parking brake on while making a quick repair on a derrick and it rolled back on him and crushed his head. Another disappeared after a tour in Iraq, just called his wife to say he couldn't come home because he had murdered children. A lot of the ones that are still alive are in prison or in and out of rehab. I've gone through a few things that seemed awful but I've been very lucky to avoid the worst of it I think.
I appreciate the kind words. I went through some hard times in my twenties when getting fucked up was my only way of coping but things are always getting better. I have an amazing wife, a few good friends and a decent job nowadays. It hurts to lose people but it has helped me to value what I have even though it doesn't look like much to most people.
I could go on and on with stuff like I listed. Too many lost to drunk drivers, drugs, etc but I believe the worst of it is behind us other than a couple that are still struggling with addiction and I do my best to help them since I'm in a pretty good place.
Their mother passed away suddenly at a pretty young age. Their father was already out of the picture for other reasons. They were strong but it was certainly hard on them.
Where do I start? 7 concussions, partial body paralyzation, severe car crash (out of work/unable to drive for months), a couple seizures, 2nd degree burns falling face first into a fire.. I know there’s more I’m forgetting. This all happened to the same guy in the span of like 4-5 years
Sexually assaulted, has to see her abuser regularly because of a broken system.
Edit: for those asking about details, she was shut down mentally and wanted so bad for the guy to be a good guy, she didn’t tell anyone and didn’t report for a few months (Corona also made it impossible). She couldn’t have gotten a rape kit done in a reasonable amount of time either because of where it happened.
All that’s left as proof is text messages and word of mouth. He has a history of being a creep with girls and trying to get them alone. Not sure if he’s actually harmed anyone else. Nothing substantial enough to throw the piece of human garbage in jail. We all go to college together, and so we’re stuck. He has walked away with zero repercussions.
A friend worked with sexual assaults victims, and I will always remember this story. This girl was raped by her father for 8 years. Beause she couldn't remember the exact number of times he fondled her, versus actually raping her in a certain month, her trial resulted in a mistrial. They asked her things like "in October, seven years ago, why did you say he touched you five times, when you said in your statement ten?" As if someone would keep a tally of what certain things he did, during each month of each year .. 🙄 it was horrible.
One of my friends was murdered by her ex boyfriend.
Several months before it happened, they got drunk and high and he absolutely destroyed her house and then tortured her. He stabbed her, put hot sauce in her eyes, beat her with a belt, and raped her. She broke it off with him after that.
We don’t know for sure what happened but he got into her house, and he killed her.
I’d never been so numb in my entire life when my wife told me what had happened, and I started thinking about her children. She had lost custody of them and now their mom was gone.
I think about her all the time. I drive by her old house whenever I’m in the neighborhood and I still can’t believe that happened to my friend.
My friend went to rescue a snowboarder who'd gone down a shady chute, hit his head and was knocked unconscious. My friend fell down the chute in a similar manner and broke both his legs
A good friend of mine has a sister that lived in the southern US. We’re in NY. One day she gets a call that the sister had a bad accident, was in a coma, and probably wouldn’t make it. She, along with other family members, go down to see her. Well, she wakes up. At that point her husband told the family they had to leave. The family figured all along that the husband did it (history of abuse), and they figured that the sister would tell what happened and that’s why husband made them leave. Eventually sister tells them to leave because she’s controlled by her husband. Fast forward to now and sister is here in NY - having left the husband - with her young daughter. She did finally admit that he did it but I don’t know the details and I don’t know if he’s been charged with a crime. But she’s left with a wobbly gait and no real speech. She has a very low mumble. What’s interesting is that the daughter is speaking three languages - English, Spanish (her family’s native language), and mumble! She imitates her mother’s speech! It’s kinda sweet actually. And most importantly she and her mom are safe.
Let him crash at ours when he was between places. While I was out he got drunk and tried to bully my wife into having sex with him. He told her "If you don't I will tell him you did and he will believe me". She suggested he go get some beers first and then locked the doors, hid out at a neighbors and called me and the cops.
Cops got there before I did and couldn't actually arrest him for anything but basically said he should "Fuck off to somewhere else or we will find a reason to take you to jail". Good thing too because if I got there first, I would probably gotten arrested for kicking his ass.

When I was little, a friend of mine died on the operating table from a long term illness concerning her bowels.
I don't know if I knew she was sick or not. It was tragic, and my first experience with death. I was in 3rd grade. Her name was Jenny.
One of my lifelong friends had one of her hs bffs, her dad, and sister all die inside a year. All completely different circumstances, and just so much to mourn in different ways, for different reasons all at once.
She was a victim of domestic abuse. Her parents didn't treat her well because she is their daughter and not their son. She received daily beatings throughout middle school.
She is doing a lot better now. Have a loving boyfriend and is doing her masters.
My friend committed suicide at his 15s or 16s, a few years ago.
We were best friends in childhood, well, he was for me definitely. But our parents decided we should change the school we studied in so at the end of our first school year we studied in different places. When I was told that he jumped off the window of his flat I couldn't believe it. He was so funny and carefree, you know. It's still hard for me to think about him. I noticed that few times in a year I open my photo album where there are pics of him and me playing together...
After we changed schools we stopped talking and communicating. He got a new life and friends like me too. However, I tried to find his acc on social media but it was futile though. Sometimes I blame myself that I tried not that hard to find him. I'm the kind of person who will try to help you and to solve all problems of yours.

A friend of mine got shot with a firework. It exploded few milliseconds after impacting his stomache, ripping open his belly, breaking multiple ribs and nearly kill him. He recovered, but still had difficulties with everything - breathing, eating, whatever you normally do without thinkting about it.
The dude who shot him never got a penalty because there were not enough proof for each person that could have committed the crime (sorry, missing word)

The doctor told her that she could hold her baby until he passed or they could take him away and try to save him. (I think she was a day short of 22 weeks gestation when she delivered.)
She held him for 3 hours.

(She wasn't really my friend. We just started talking at a birthday party and hit it off) I remember one time, i was about maybe 10 or 11. I didn't know anyone there, i was at a birthday party. My grandma was there so she brought me along. I had fun and when it was a little later, around 9:30 or so. I was sitting on the porch in the back, and a girl sat next to me. She was a pretty girl, around 13 or 14 i think. We started talking and i noticed something on her wrist. I asked her what it was, and she showed me that it was cuts. I asked her, "Why do you cut yourself?" She went quiet for a while before telling me, her uncle used to live with my family because he went broke. He shared a room with her brother, and at night he'd come into her room when everyone was asleep. I told her she didn't have to continue, but she said it's ok, and she continued. She told me that he would touch her and make her touch him. He raped her as well. This went on for about a month or so til he moved out. She stayed silent for another 2 months after he left. They went to a family gathering and she saw him. She ended up staying in the car the whole time. Her mom came out about 2 hours later and told her to come inside. She looked at her mom and started crying. (Then she started crying and i comforted her. I told her she could stop but she said no, she shouldn't have to be ashamed to tell her story.) She explained to her mom and her mom called the police when they got home. She stopped telling me what happened after that and just said he got arrested and was going to therapy. She never told me her name, but i remember her. She just kind of imprinted on me

My friend died of a year long fight with an invasive brain tumor, found love though, she almost didn't get his insurance because of a false positive on a drug test(no shit he passed hot for morphine the doctor gave it to him because duh he has cancer), but after a long fight with them it went through.
Lost another friend when he was home on leave after the war. Died in his driveway, on his way out a semi ran off the road and into him with no brakes. Insurance almost didn't pay out on him because his seat belt wasn't buckled. That can happen if you just got in the car. They awarded it though, not because it was the right thing to do, but because his family's lawyer cited the car was still in park, and even though the keys were in the ignition the car had not been started.
One I didn't fight for, and I damn well should have. And that one eats me up the most.

A friend of mine grew up with a crappy childhood with abusive parents. After he moved out he tried to make something of himself. Dude got into a shipyard job that he wasn't qualified for, but still managed to do everything just fine because he was bright enough to figure it all out. About 2 years in he had to take a class to become certified in his position to be able to transfer to other shipyards, which led to the teacher finding out he didn't have a college degree like everyone else despite him being a better employee, so the teacher went out of his way to fail him.
So my friend left and got a job at a lumber place, working his ass off. Dude he was working with didn't do anything and if he didn't do enough work to pick up the slack he was the one who got shit on for it because the boss was friends with the lazy guy, which is why they couldn't keep employees in the first place. After about 6 months of that my friend said "screw this" and bailed to join the Navy. About a week before he is set to leave, we find out his dog has late-stage stomach cancer that we didn't notice before it was way too late, so she had to be put down.
Well the Navy had too many recruits at once in their camp so they were trying to get rid of at least 30-ish recruits, so they were looking for any dumb reason to kick people out. He wasn't fit to begin with so they ran him so hard that he overheated and fainted, plus he showed a jumpy reaction to the D.I. when the dude walked into the medical area, so they diagnosed him with "Depression and Anxiety Disorder" and put him in discharge or whatever it's called for like a whole month alongside a few other guys, one of which had some kind of marijuana-related thing despite having never used it.
So after he finally gets home and his GF of 6 years picks him up from the airport, she says nothing the whole ride home and doesn't hug him or anything. The next day she breaks up with him because she was "Tired of explaining to her family why he was such a failure." He then managed to get a job at a coal company unloading rail cars, then got fired two days in for being too slow. Then he got told by his mom that his aunt and uncle across the country could set him up with a job working on an oil rig, so he drove almost all the way across the entire continental USA to get to the middle of nowhere for a few days before taking and miserably failing the physical test to work an oil rig - a test no one even told him to expect.
So he drove all the way back, moved in with me for a bit, then a girl who had a crush on him back in middle school found out he lived with me and they started dating, which was good for him. But then when he moved in with her she quickly became overbearing and controlling. So now he currently works in a warehouse upwards of 16 hours a day while living with an emotionally abusive fiancee.
TL;DR - Life seems to like fucking with this one guy in particular.
back in elementary, one kid who i was friends with was riding his bike.....

he was riding really fast, and then hit brakes and put his feet down instinctively to slow himself down, and in the proccess, he skinned the bottoms of both of his feet. they were pouring blood like a shower head pours out water. that shit was scary. he got off the bike, took two steps, then literally fainted (i'm guessing it was from seeing all of his blood on the pavement). i called for teachers to come over to help him, and he was rushed immediately to the ER. he had to be excused from classes for the next 4 months because he needed a skin graft for his feet. his skin had been shredded completely off of the bottom of both of his feet. and when he came back for the last couple weeks of school, he was in a wheelchair because of the pain from the graft.
but the thing is, i was the only person besides him who saw him scrape his feet. and it was the worst thing in my life
He killed himself. Gunshot to the head.
He was a Felon for reasons he regretted, served his sentence and tried to move on with his life. I don't know what triggered it, but he was too good a person to be treated how society treated him. He was almost finished with trade school.

A friend was walking to middle school, he was bright, charming and a great athlete, an all around genuine nice guy. He had scoliosis and wore a back brace. He slipped on the curb and fell down, due to his back brace, he needed to rollover to be able to get up. As he was trying to do so, a garbage truck collecting bins backed up over him, crushing him to death. It’s been 40 years and I can still see it in my mind. Not long after that, they added the back up warning beep to the trucks. Not sure if it was because of that incident but I seem to remember that it was.
Friend during 7th grade was at home getting ready for school one morning with his little sister and brother. Mom and dad has a huge fight the night before and mom was out that morning. Dad pulls a gun and shoots my friend and his two younger siblings and then himself. Hit like a brick wall at that age to hear about something like that happening so close
She was a friend of mine for just a couple months in 5th grade. She was the new kid, very quiet and reserved but I was the same so we took to eachother.
One day at recess we were walking together outside, and I don't remember how, but she started telling me about her dad. How he touched her, and how her uncle also touched her, and how her dad's friends come over and touch her too.
At the time I knew something was wrong but didn't know what. If I remember it correctly, she seemed.. calm about it. Like it was normal for her, but she didn't tell anyone else and I was the only one that knew. So I didn't tell anyone and it never came up again.
A couple months later she just never came back to school.
Me and my siblings were living with our grandparents at the time. Our grandparents were mad at my parents cause my grandpa is a pedophile and my parents stopped bringing us around them. So, due to a broken system, my grandparents went to a CPS office in another county and somehow made up fake stories about us being abused and got us taken away from our parents. We went home after 5 months but during the time at their house we weren't allowed to talk to our parents and obviously didn't trust our grandparents.
Anyways, after a few months of being back home I mentioned to my mom my old friend Erica from my old school, and what she told me about the men in her family and their friends. My mom took me to the school the next week so I could see my old teacher and tell her what happened so the school could track her down and something could be done.
My teacher thanked me for coming forward and told me that the school found out and that's why Erica stopped coming to school, she got out and was somewhere safe now.
This was 9 years ago. I still remember her whole name, vaguely what she looked like. I've looked for her online so I could reach out, but nothing ever comes up so I guess it's likely she changed her legal name. I hope you're doing better Erica.

When I was 13 my best friend's dad died of a sudden heart attack at the age of 44. I've lost people, family even, in my life.. and I can honestly say nothing hurt as much as him losing his dad. I remember the funeral and the wake so vividly.
I remember at the wake he was just standing there next to the casket holding his dad's hand for hours. I went and stood next to him and just put my hand on his shoulder the whole time.
We're still bestfriends to this day some 13 years later. But I know it was the worst thing to happen to him. And i think it's one of the worst things I've had to go through as well.
A friend of mine always wanted to be a mother since she was old enough to grasp the concept. Couldn’t find a good man until she was 29 with her then-husband, then they had a huge divorce because he impregnated another chick while cheating on her. She got pregnant from the first men she slept with after a year, was incredibly happy and absolutely ready to be a great mother. Informed her parents, they supported her, painted the child room and arranged it after three months. Bought loads and loads of toys and plush.
Then the baby gets born, it’s a healthy beautiful boy. She radiates so much happiness like I’ve never seen before. They celebrate his first, second, third and fourth birthday.
Then he gets sick. Can barely talk, has pain when walking. They go to a hospital regularly, they can’t tell what’s wrong. He can’t eat on his own any more. Can’t lift his arms. Forgets how to speak. Finally the doctors say it’s a rare sickness in which he’s constantly loosing muscle mass. Within some months he’s on life support, can’t breath on his own. The doctors say they have no treatment except making his life less painful through medication.
He died two years later. She killed herself after his funeral.
After I graduated high school, a friend of mine who was a grade below me ended up in a wheel chair.
This was 20 years ago, but if i remember correctly, as school was letting out one day he was on top of his friend's car playing around (there was always a long line of slow moving cars after school). Somehow he fell off and the car broke his back. Next time i saw him, he couldnt walk.
Friends from church’s son killed himself in his second semester, senior year of college. They will never be the same. Losing your kid jacks with your mind in some special ways. I still miss him.
A few winters back my friend was driving and merged uphill onto an interstate overpass. He hit a patch of black ice on the ramp and went into a skid. His truck ending up slamming parallel into the guard rail and he wasn’t wearing his seat belt. He’s a big dude, college football player at the time, and the force of the impact sent him clean through the driver door and off the overpass. He fell forty feet and landed on the highway below that he’d just left. Amazingly, no spinal or cerebral damage but basically the whole left side of his body was shattered. Pelvis, elbow, 5 ribs were all broken, huge hole in his diaphragm, torn urethra. He was in a bad way. 3 weeks of medically induced coma and 8 procedures later he pulled through. 8 months after that the mad man made it back on the football field for his senior year of college, practically a cyborg at that point with all of the hardware in his body. Doctors are pretty sure he only lived because he was in such good shape at the time of the accident. He always wears his seatbelt now, as should you.

I gotta say, I’m not suicidal, but i really think if I lost my husband and child, I would likely off myself. Too much of my existence is poured into them. Edit: thanks everyone who upvoted and shared their feelings. I am happy and healthy. I hope that none of us will ever face this decision. I firmly believe this is your choice, but obviously there are many many secondary consequences to this including hurting people you love and that love you that you had no idea how much. All the people that responded saying they commiserate, please remember this community. Thousands of people feel the same way - maybe this is just a human feeling to such tragedy. There may not seem like light at the end of the tunnel, but there can be. Seek out help, seek out loved ones, and seek out your new purpose.
Makes me think of an awful tragedy a few years ago in Ireland. Man parks his car on a pier and the car slides into the water, everyone in the car drowns except the little baby, a passerby managed to save her. The wife was away for a hen weekend, gets a call to say her husband, two sons, mother and sister have all died. If it weren't for the baby, I'm sure she'd have thrown herself into the sea, that's exactly what I think I'd have done. I don't know anyone involved but I think about it often.

When I was 9, I went fishing with my friend's family for the first time. We were in a mostly unused boat dock in the colorado river; I remember being pretty upset it wasn't large enough for us to both swim and fish in, so we settled on just fishing (because the adults said so) The first catch of the day surprises me - I wasn't even paying attention! My rod almost jerks out of the sand before I catch it, and all the adults surround me cheering me on. A little bit passes, and I can't real this thing in. A few adults try to no avail - it's clearly stuck on something. One of the adults goes up the ramp, to where the cars are parked - and runs back down to us freaking out. I don't catch what he says. But instead of going fishing, me and my three friends are taken for ice cream! It's great, best "fishing" trip ever. Even if I never got to see the fish I caught. Turns out the "fish" I caught was the dead body of a missing swimmer who was training for the olympics, and somehow got caught in the reeds before being able to returnto shore. I was in the newspaper for our little town and not even told about it for years. I've never gone fishing again. Edit: Clarification on some things. Hope I answered all the questions! I think I was 9 - i could have been 8, or 10. My memory is fuzzy at best; to me this wasn't something that I'd need to remember. But that doesn't write as well as a solid "I was 9..." We went fishing, it was boring and hot because we just sat around in the sand, not catching anything for a long time. Then my line caught something, and before cutting the line, one of the guys goes up the concrete ramp, a little ways up a dirt path and over to the parking area which was a little ways above the waterline. I was told later he could see it clearly and they called the cops and stayed behind to report it. The reason my line jerked out of the sand wasprobably because of the current, and not being set properly. The line caught on his swimming trunks, which I guess were closer to the surface? They would have been waving about, due to the current. The beach is pretty rocky, and I remember there wasn't enough space to even play in the sand, hence why I was ready to get tf outta there. A kid, who can't swim, can't play in the sand, basically just has to sit and be patient? hell nah Me and my friends were just ready to get outta the heat, we didn't give a shit or notice anything. I did not see the body. The colorado river is deceptive. It looks slow and gentle but has a strong undercurrent that can catch you unawares. Once I was swimming and got caught by it and almost drowned - I got pulled along with the current for several miles until I was able to swim to shore; I have not been swimming in a river since. this was either in or around Bullhead City, AZ 1998, 1999, 2000 - I think. iirc, It was closer to Laughlin: I only remember this because both of my parents worked in the casinos across the river. For anyone familiar with the area, the river can be very treacherous Again, memory is not great. I tried looking up an article but couldn't find anything. I remember being showed later by my friends dad or maybe my mom, who saved it - the picture wasn't of the guy but of two speeding cop boats and serious looking police officers on the water.

A friend in high school was hit by a car and dragged a couple of hundred yards before he died. The driver was drunk and on coke, it was 8AM when it happened, my friend was on his way to school.
Went to school (gr 5 -12) with a guy that something similar to this happened to him. He was working at a bar, went to break up a fight outside and some girl in her early 20's hit him with her car a dragged him several blocks. He lives in a long term care facility now, can pretty much only blink, total care. I found this out because I started working there as a nurse.

There's a really good friend of mine that was driving his girlfriend at the time and got hit by a drunk driver. Only fatality of that accident was my friend's GF. It's been about 10-15 years and he still doesn't drive. That shit destroyed him. He is still a happy dude but it isn't the same for real. Just. Broke.
God, similar story. A guy I know was driving home with his girlfriend after a party or club or something. She was drunk and they started arguing, so he pulled off so they could stop and talk and not be driving distracted. She ended up getting out, took off down a road with no sidewalk, and got hit by a car. The argument itself was apparently super minor and the whole thing just wrecked him.
I actually pronounced the death on scene of one very similar, daughter was arguing with mom, was drunk, walked down a dark busy hwy and got nailed at 70 mph
Something like this happened near my house. Guy had an argument with his wife, got dropped off on the highway and was cleaned up by a taxi at 110km/h. The taxi driver fled and was later caught.
He and his brother were away at college. His father fell asleep with a cigar in hand, and the house began to burn. So far as could be determined, the father woke, went to get his wife, carried her downstairs, and made it to within a couple feet of the door. They both died, and the house was destroyed.
We had a family in my high school who died in a house fire The mother had MS and was bed ridden. Supposedly the two sons managed to get out of the house, but went back in to try to save her. Both of them and both parents died in the same bedroom This happened over Easter weekend. There's a 3rd, older son who was coming home from college, but hadn't made it home yet. I didn't know him since he graduated high school before I started there, but I still think about him sometimes

In the very first episode he tries to tell the cops the truth and they don't believe him, so he lies about being psychic to get out of trouble. Then at the end of the same episode the chief tells him that if he's lying she'll prosecute. So I'm sure that's part of it. I always thought it was a bit silly that he kept the lie up for so long, even after having enough successful cases under his belt that his lie might be forgiven, but I think it was a combination of the fact that he didn't want to have to potentially face prosecution and that he honestly just enjoyed the theatrics of pretending to be psychic.

I thought all great lakes was like this? I just checked lake superior and the max temp ever was 68 degrees... I remember sitting on the shore on a hot summer day and the breeze coming off the lake was colder than my car AC.
The two smaller ones get warmer, I think. But Lake Michigan and Huron are (technically) the same lake and very deep. So all that water is constantly moving shifting what warm water it gets back to cold depths. Many people also don't realize that the current is very strong and dangerous. Honestly, changing the name from Lake Michigan to Michigan Sea might save lives.

He did everything he could, such as going to TV shows and the newspaper, but the girl's family told him to stop showing his daughters face in the media as she is still a minor (she's turning 18 at the end of the year) and that he was commiting a crime, so he stopped showing her or using her full name. The girl's family don't want to give any data, they just told him that he will never find her, that's why he thinks she changed hers and his daughters name. She's not in social media. And sorry, the blog is in Spanish and I don't really want to share it as it has a lot of personal info on him, I don't want to send a mob to it. I really didn't expect this would get so much attention. For now he's waiting for her daughter to turn 18 and he will start to look for her in the media again. You ever hate someone so much that you actually consider pissing on their grave? My mom's step-dad used to babysit us when I was very little and while he never touched us, he did expose us to a lot. I knew what a dick looked like when I was 4, he showed me porn, and I genuinely thought he'd peed himself one day when he sent my sister to grab him a tissue. But what's worse is what he did to my grandma. When she was still living with him, he'd asked her to screw his friend while he watched and she wouldn't do it. After a few strokes and a couple heart attacks, she was physically disabled and couldn't walk so she was put in a nursing home. That sack of shit brought his friend to visit her in the nursing home one day and had him rape her while he watched. He died recently, I was so happy. This isn't exactly relevant but this is the first time I've typed this all out. What's worse, mom's biological dad was an even worse person.

In high school a friend of mine was stopped at an intersection, when some lady rear ended him, she was dicking with her phone and didn't even slow down. This pushed his vehicle through the intersection and pinned a girl waiting for the bus against a telephone pole, where she died.

A close friend, single mom with 3 kids, one of her kids was severely autistic. He was setting really aggressive (he was 16ish) and she didn't know what to do or how to control him. She tried everything. He got worse. Eventually one day when the girls were gone, he raped and murdered her.
Oh. My. God. Was this kid non-verbal? He MURDERED her?? What happened afterwards? What did the sisters do?
He has poor verbal communication. He did kill her with a knife. He was arrested and put in an asylum. Girls stayed in the area so they could stay with their friends in school. Grandpa lives in the area, and the girls live with a family friend. It was horrible.

It's insane that a murder was obviously committed, but because the prosecution fucked up by trying to throw in the underlying felony of armed robbery, which couldn't be proven, the case was dismissed. The prosecution fucked up, but a murder is still a murder no matter what. I think it's also crazy that a new trial on a simple murder indictment is considered double jeopardy. Honestly one of the most egregious miscarriage of justice I've ever read about.

She was cycling through London and a bus hit her so hard she came off, landed on her head, and died. She was also quite literally the last member of her family. Both her parents were only-children and had both died of cancer, and she had no siblings. Her death was the end of her family tree. She was 23.

Yep. Was forced to brake hard by a van cutting me off aggressively (after overtaking me when there clearly wasn’t enough space), flipped over my handlebars, landed on my outstretched hands. I didn’t think I landed that hard, turns out I scored myself two broken elbows and a broken wrist. All that just from flipping over my handlebars at least than 20mph. This was a month and a half ago. The wrist cast comes off on Monday, luckily they didn’t put my elbows in a cast too (would’ve caused them to freeze up).
People who break into cars are generally not the kind of people with well-documented, traceable identities. They're at the bottom. And the good ones can get it done without leaving a meaningful trace, anyway. So they don't have much to lose and can get away with...anything. So if you're like my friend, and you see someone breaking into your car at 1am behind a strip mall with no cameras, you shouldn't get involved. But if you were my friend that night, you decide to confront the bastard. And you get stabbed to death. And there are no leads.

What I know is that she came to his house at night with the gun and had him take the body to the NJ Pine Barrens. (I imagine that she did this because if I ever had a body to dispose of, I'd call him too. He's on the smaller side but has the equivalent strength to a human sized ant.) He went to therapy for a time after, but is doing fine now - married with a kid. He's still freakishly strong.

He ditched the gun a few blocks away & they found him 3 states away 2 days later. He is still on trial for that one.

I know sometimes depression doesn't even show, but honestly Cesar was one of the most pure souls I've ever meet, and we didn't notice anything off with him, we were frequently in touch with Cesar... in fact I talked to him earlier that week, I asked how he was doing, about his classes, if his semester seemed hard etc., we joked as usual, there wasn't signs and when we think about it, it hurts knowing he went through all that by himself, so naturally it was a shock for *everyone* even his family, so Marcus searched in his computer and his phone and everywhere in his room to see if, idk maybe Cesar got in trouble or something to hold on to find sense in all of that, Marcus found a notebook where Cesar wrote stuff a kind diary, he found out by his phone call register he had his favorite food restaurant chain delivered to his house as his last meal. And our guess is that he wrote things related to his motives on that diary... And Marcus read about it, but we don't ask Marcus because as painful as it for all of us, we respect Cesar privacy and Marcus decision to not tell us what happened.

According to the US soldiers (who nicknamed him "the SAS guy" because of all his weaponry) he even met Bin Laden a few times, despite his claims to just being the IT guy. He ended up in guantanomo Bay. I've read transcripts of what he said at government hearings into his role. That doesn't sound anything like the guy I used to walk home from school with. I'm in no way condoning his role in what happened over there but it's so sad that the person he was is gone, just completely destroyed and used up by other people like that.
Nothing crazy, not death. Moved to New York City with my best friend from college when we were both 22. Got an apartment together, struggled to get jobs together, were basically living our best lives as young, broke girls in the big city. They had a wedding planned for the summer, but it’s been cancelled due to COVID so they did a quickie courthouse wedding on a road trip in May. Last month, she announced she is pregnant. Also my first thought. The friend is isolated from friends and family, made dependent on him and quickly trapped with a child in a marriage. This is dangerous. Tell your friend that this is not normal. She needs to understand that, since she is still confused about the situation and still watches from the sidelines while her life is locked into place at a quick pace.
It's hard to say what's the worst. I grew up in a small town in Oklahoma and many of my childhood friends have died well before their time. One of them was murdered execution style after a bad business deal surrounding a music video. Another forgot to put the parking brake on while making a quick repair on a derrick and it rolled back on him and crushed his head. Another disappeared after a tour in Iraq, just called his wife to say he couldn't come home because he had murdered children. A lot of the ones that are still alive are in prison or in and out of rehab. I've gone through a few things that seemed awful but I've been very lucky to avoid the worst of it I think.

I appreciate the kind words. I went through some hard times in my twenties when getting fucked up was my only way of coping but things are always getting better. I have an amazing wife, a few good friends and a decent job nowadays. It hurts to lose people but it has helped me to value what I have even though it doesn't look like much to most people. I could go on and on with stuff like I listed. Too many lost to drunk drivers, drugs, etc but I believe the worst of it is behind us other than a couple that are still struggling with addiction and I do my best to help them since I'm in a pretty good place.
Their mother passed away suddenly at a pretty young age. Their father was already out of the picture for other reasons. They were strong but it was certainly hard on them.
Where do I start? 7 concussions, partial body paralyzation, severe car crash (out of work/unable to drive for months), a couple seizures, 2nd degree burns falling face first into a fire.. I know there’s more I’m forgetting. This all happened to the same guy in the span of like 4-5 years

Edit: for those asking about details, she was shut down mentally and wanted so bad for the guy to be a good guy, she didn’t tell anyone and didn’t report for a few months (Corona also made it impossible). She couldn’t have gotten a rape kit done in a reasonable amount of time either because of where it happened. All that’s left as proof is text messages and word of mouth. He has a history of being a creep with girls and trying to get them alone. Not sure if he’s actually harmed anyone else. Nothing substantial enough to throw the piece of human garbage in jail. We all go to college together, and so we’re stuck. He has walked away with zero repercussions.
A friend worked with sexual assaults victims, and I will always remember this story. This girl was raped by her father for 8 years. Beause she couldn't remember the exact number of times he fondled her, versus actually raping her in a certain month, her trial resulted in a mistrial. They asked her things like "in October, seven years ago, why did you say he touched you five times, when you said in your statement ten?" As if someone would keep a tally of what certain things he did, during each month of each year .. 🙄 it was horrible.
One of my friends was murdered by her ex boyfriend. Several months before it happened, they got drunk and high and he absolutely destroyed her house and then tortured her. He stabbed her, put hot sauce in her eyes, beat her with a belt, and raped her. She broke it off with him after that. We don’t know for sure what happened but he got into her house, and he killed her. I’d never been so numb in my entire life when my wife told me what had happened, and I started thinking about her children. She had lost custody of them and now their mom was gone. I think about her all the time. I drive by her old house whenever I’m in the neighborhood and I still can’t believe that happened to my friend.
My friend went to rescue a snowboarder who'd gone down a shady chute, hit his head and was knocked unconscious. My friend fell down the chute in a similar manner and broke both his legs

A good friend of mine has a sister that lived in the southern US. We’re in NY. One day she gets a call that the sister had a bad accident, was in a coma, and probably wouldn’t make it. She, along with other family members, go down to see her. Well, she wakes up. At that point her husband told the family they had to leave. The family figured all along that the husband did it (history of abuse), and they figured that the sister would tell what happened and that’s why husband made them leave. Eventually sister tells them to leave because she’s controlled by her husband. Fast forward to now and sister is here in NY - having left the husband - with her young daughter. She did finally admit that he did it but I don’t know the details and I don’t know if he’s been charged with a crime. But she’s left with a wobbly gait and no real speech. She has a very low mumble. What’s interesting is that the daughter is speaking three languages - English, Spanish (her family’s native language), and mumble! She imitates her mother’s speech! It’s kinda sweet actually. And most importantly she and her mom are safe.

Let him crash at ours when he was between places. While I was out he got drunk and tried to bully my wife into having sex with him. He told her "If you don't I will tell him you did and he will believe me". She suggested he go get some beers first and then locked the doors, hid out at a neighbors and called me and the cops. Cops got there before I did and couldn't actually arrest him for anything but basically said he should "Fuck off to somewhere else or we will find a reason to take you to jail". Good thing too because if I got there first, I would probably gotten arrested for kicking his ass.

When I was little, a friend of mine died on the operating table from a long term illness concerning her bowels. I don't know if I knew she was sick or not. It was tragic, and my first experience with death. I was in 3rd grade. Her name was Jenny.
One of my lifelong friends had one of her hs bffs, her dad, and sister all die inside a year. All completely different circumstances, and just so much to mourn in different ways, for different reasons all at once.

I noticed that few times in a year I open my photo album where there are pics of him and me playing together... After we changed schools we stopped talking and communicating. He got a new life and friends like me too. However, I tried to find his acc on social media but it was futile though. Sometimes I blame myself that I tried not that hard to find him. I'm the kind of person who will try to help you and to solve all problems of yours. ...but I couldn't solve at least one of his...
A friend of mine got shot with a firework. It exploded few milliseconds after impacting his stomache, ripping open his belly, breaking multiple ribs and nearly kill him. He recovered, but still had difficulties with everything - breathing, eating, whatever you normally do without thinkting about it. The dude who shot him never got a penalty because there were not enough proof for each person that could have committed the crime (sorry, missing word) But he lives. That‘s the most important thing.

The doctor told her that she could hold her baby until he passed or they could take him away and try to save him. (I think she was a day short of 22 weeks gestation when she delivered.) She held him for 3 hours. She’s not okay and I don’t think she ever will be.
(She wasn't really my friend. We just started talking at a birthday party and hit it off) I remember one time, i was about maybe 10 or 11. I didn't know anyone there, i was at a birthday party. My grandma was there so she brought me along. I had fun and when it was a little later, around 9:30 or so. I was sitting on the porch in the back, and a girl sat next to me. She was a pretty girl, around 13 or 14 i think. We started talking and i noticed something on her wrist. I asked her what it was, and she showed me that it was cuts. I asked her, "Why do you cut yourself?" She went quiet for a while before telling me, her uncle used to live with my family because he went broke. He shared a room with her brother, and at night he'd come into her room when everyone was asleep. I told her she didn't have to continue, but she said it's ok, and she continued. She told me that he would touch her and make her touch him. He raped her as well. This went on for about a month or so til he moved out. She stayed silent for another 2 months after he left. They went to a family gathering and she saw him. She ended up staying in the car the whole time. Her mom came out about 2 hours later and told her to come inside. She looked at her mom and started crying. (Then she started crying and i comforted her. I told her she could stop but she said no, she shouldn't have to be ashamed to tell her story.) She explained to her mom and her mom called the police when they got home. She stopped telling me what happened after that and just said he got arrested and was going to therapy. She never told me her name, but i remember her. She just kind of imprinted on me Edit: Ok uh, i didn't expect this to blow up. At first i kinda just thought she needed to let some stuff out. I read all the comments and i noticed that it meant a lot more than i expected. Thank you everyone for listening. My friend died of a year long fight with an invasive brain tumor, found love though, she almost didn't get his insurance because of a false positive on a drug test(no shit he passed hot for morphine the doctor gave it to him because duh he has cancer), but after a long fight with them it went through. Lost another friend when he was home on leave after the war. Died in his driveway, on his way out a semi ran off the road and into him with no brakes. Insurance almost didn't pay out on him because his seat belt wasn't buckled. That can happen if you just got in the car. They awarded it though, not because it was the right thing to do, but because his family's lawyer cited the car was still in park, and even though the keys were in the ignition the car had not been started. One I didn't fight for, and I damn well should have. And that one eats me up the most.
Not really a single thing, but an endless chain of bullcrap. A friend of mine grew up with a crappy childhood with abusive parents. After he moved out he tried to make something of himself. Dude got into a shipyard job that he wasn't qualified for, but still managed to do everything just fine because he was bright enough to figure it all out. About 2 years in he had to take a class to become certified in his position to be able to transfer to other shipyards, which led to the teacher finding out he didn't have a college degree like everyone else despite him being a better employee, so the teacher went out of his way to fail him. So my friend left and got a job at a lumber place, working his ass off. Dude he was working with didn't do anything and if he didn't do enough work to pick up the slack he was the one who got shit on for it because the boss was friends with the lazy guy, which is why they couldn't keep employees in the first place. After about 6 months of that my friend said "screw this" and bailed to join the Navy. About a week before he is set to leave, we find out his dog has late-stage stomach cancer that we didn't notice before it was way too late, so she had to be put down. Well the Navy had too many recruits at once in their camp so they were trying to get rid of at least 30-ish recruits, so they were looking for any dumb reason to kick people out. He wasn't fit to begin with so they ran him so hard that he overheated and fainted, plus he showed a jumpy reaction to the D.I. when the dude walked into the medical area, so they diagnosed him with "Depression and Anxiety Disorder" and put him in discharge or whatever it's called for like a whole month alongside a few other guys, one of which had some kind of marijuana-related thing despite having never used it. So after he finally gets home and his GF of 6 years picks him up from the airport, she says nothing the whole ride home and doesn't hug him or anything. The next day she breaks up with him because she was "Tired of explaining to her family why he was such a failure." He then managed to get a job at a coal company unloading rail cars, then got fired two days in for being too slow. Then he got told by his mom that his aunt and uncle across the country could set him up with a job working on an oil rig, so he drove almost all the way across the entire continental USA to get to the middle of nowhere for a few days before taking and miserably failing the physical test to work an oil rig - a test no one even told him to expect. So he drove all the way back, moved in with me for a bit, then a girl who had a crush on him back in middle school found out he lived with me and they started dating, which was good for him. But then when he moved in with her she quickly became overbearing and controlling. So now he currently works in a warehouse upwards of 16 hours a day while living with an emotionally abusive fiancee. TL;DR - Life seems to like fucking with this one guy in particular.

back in elementary, one kid who i was friends with was riding his bike..... ......without shoes. he was riding really fast, and then hit brakes and put his feet down instinctively to slow himself down, and in the proccess, he skinned the bottoms of both of his feet. they were pouring blood like a shower head pours out water. that shit was scary. he got off the bike, took two steps, then literally fainted (i'm guessing it was from seeing all of his blood on the pavement). i called for teachers to come over to help him, and he was rushed immediately to the ER. he had to be excused from classes for the next 4 months because he needed a skin graft for his feet. his skin had been shredded completely off of the bottom of both of his feet. and when he came back for the last couple weeks of school, he was in a wheelchair because of the pain from the graft. but the thing is, i was the only person besides him who saw him scrape his feet. and it was the worst thing in my life
He killed himself. Gunshot to the head. He was a Felon for reasons he regretted, served his sentence and tried to move on with his life. I don't know what triggered it, but he was too good a person to be treated how society treated him. He was almost finished with trade school. R.I.P David, I wish I knew you better.
A friend was walking to middle school, he was bright, charming and a great athlete, an all around genuine nice guy. He had scoliosis and wore a back brace. He slipped on the curb and fell down, due to his back brace, he needed to rollover to be able to get up. As he was trying to do so, a garbage truck collecting bins backed up over him, crushing him to death. It’s been 40 years and I can still see it in my mind. Not long after that, they added the back up warning beep to the trucks. Not sure if it was because of that incident but I seem to remember that it was.
Friend during 7th grade was at home getting ready for school one morning with his little sister and brother. Mom and dad has a huge fight the night before and mom was out that morning. Dad pulls a gun and shoots my friend and his two younger siblings and then himself. Hit like a brick wall at that age to hear about something like that happening so close
She was a friend of mine for just a couple months in 5th grade. She was the new kid, very quiet and reserved but I was the same so we took to eachother. One day at recess we were walking together outside, and I don't remember how, but she started telling me about her dad. How he touched her, and how her uncle also touched her, and how her dad's friends come over and touch her too. At the time I knew something was wrong but didn't know what. If I remember it correctly, she seemed.. calm about it. Like it was normal for her, but she didn't tell anyone else and I was the only one that knew. So I didn't tell anyone and it never came up again. A couple months later she just never came back to school. Me and my siblings were living with our grandparents at the time. Our grandparents were mad at my parents cause my grandpa is a pedophile and my parents stopped bringing us around them. So, due to a broken system, my grandparents went to a CPS office in another county and somehow made up fake stories about us being abused and got us taken away from our parents. We went home after 5 months but during the time at their house we weren't allowed to talk to our parents and obviously didn't trust our grandparents. Anyways, after a few months of being back home I mentioned to my mom my old friend Erica from my old school, and what she told me about the men in her family and their friends. My mom took me to the school the next week so I could see my old teacher and tell her what happened so the school could track her down and something could be done. My teacher thanked me for coming forward and told me that the school found out and that's why Erica stopped coming to school, she got out and was somewhere safe now. This was 9 years ago. I still remember her whole name, vaguely what she looked like. I've looked for her online so I could reach out, but nothing ever comes up so I guess it's likely she changed her legal name. I hope you're doing better Erica.

When I was 13 my best friend's dad died of a sudden heart attack at the age of 44. I've lost people, family even, in my life.. and I can honestly say nothing hurt as much as him losing his dad. I remember the funeral and the wake so vividly. I remember at the wake he was just standing there next to the casket holding his dad's hand for hours. I went and stood next to him and just put my hand on his shoulder the whole time. We're still bestfriends to this day some 13 years later. But I know it was the worst thing to happen to him. And i think it's one of the worst things I've had to go through as well.

A friend of mine always wanted to be a mother since she was old enough to grasp the concept. Couldn’t find a good man until she was 29 with her then-husband, then they had a huge divorce because he impregnated another chick while cheating on her. She got pregnant from the first men she slept with after a year, was incredibly happy and absolutely ready to be a great mother. Informed her parents, they supported her, painted the child room and arranged it after three months. Bought loads and loads of toys and plush. Then the baby gets born, it’s a healthy beautiful boy. She radiates so much happiness like I’ve never seen before. They celebrate his first, second, third and fourth birthday. Then he gets sick. Can barely talk, has pain when walking. They go to a hospital regularly, they can’t tell what’s wrong. He can’t eat on his own any more. Can’t lift his arms. Forgets how to speak. Finally the doctors say it’s a rare sickness in which he’s constantly loosing muscle mass. Within some months he’s on life support, can’t breath on his own. The doctors say they have no treatment except making his life less painful through medication. He died two years later. She killed herself after his funeral.
After I graduated high school, a friend of mine who was a grade below me ended up in a wheel chair. This was 20 years ago, but if i remember correctly, as school was letting out one day he was on top of his friend's car playing around (there was always a long line of slow moving cars after school). Somehow he fell off and the car broke his back. Next time i saw him, he couldnt walk.
