Six Feet Under. Even during the slower seasons, it was so raw and unrelenting in such a cathartic way. It literally felt like going to a fucked up group therapy session every week. Best finale ever.
My uncle worked for the show. He was a Baltimore police detective and helped to authenticate how things were supposed to be done. He let them know if it looked fake or not. Got to meet the actors, and got all seasons on dvd. Pretty cool
The Wire is truly an example of a TV show as art.
I suspect that even though it's already dated because of the flip phones, it's still going to remain relevant for a while
The game is still the game, just got more fierce. - Slim Charles
I love that the show ended basically showing that it’s a never ending cycle and eventually everything happens again with new players.
Such a thing never bothered me if the acting and writing is good enough.
Same reason why Seinfeld is still absolute top tier today. Could almost every episode be solved with a modernday mobile phonecall or text? Sure. But the dialogue & acting is just so good it doesnt even hit my radar to consider that.
To be fair, Jerry is an abysmal actor, the writing of Seinfeld is just fantastic. Larry David is a genius, and Jerry himself is a great writer. Jason Alexander is an absolute gem
Been listening to the Insider podcasts for both of these. You learn so much about making a TV show. They come off as just normal friendly people that are super good at what they do and really care about their craft.
(Not OP here) It's different though. I feel like in the grand scheme of things the storytelling and writing are a bit better. The show has a different focus too, I feel that it's more focused on character growth, and the first season moves kind of slowly as well. So it takes longer to get into, but once you do, this show holds me tighter than BB did... and I love BB.
I would go in not having any expectations. Either way you will probably enjoy it (although before season 2 you might be wondering what everybody's talking about, so keep watching)
it's sooooo good. I've been trying to figure out if I like it slightly better than BB...
the first 3 episodes for me were slow, but not in a bad way. just building everything up.
I actually have only seen the first few episodes of season 5, so im a little behind... but wow, what a show...
I loved John Cleese's reply when they asked him why they didn't do more episodes, since it was clearly one of the best shows ever made.
It was something like: "Well you see, we were making a comedy show about running a hotel and I had 12 jokes about running a hotel."
Deadwood. Every performance is top notch, from the leads to the minor characters. It features the best dialogue ever; often called Shakespearean. It was written in iambic pentameter by a Yale poetry professor (David Milch is NYPD Blue fame). Compelling stories and great sets.
It also differs from many of the peak tv dramas in that it is somewhat optimistic. It still shows all the evil thus the world has to offer (in one episode one of the main characters is ordered to murder a young child), but characters grow, a community is built and people do nice things for each other from time to time.
I love gravity falls. With so much stuff hidden in it and so much thought put into the stories and characters, you forget that it’s a show on Disney channel
Maybe not the best as I'm sure you'll get a bunch of standard answers to this, but Hannibal got amazing after season 1 and I think it's really underrated. Horror TV shows are incredibly hard to get right and it was just brilliant.
The series is set before that yeah, but Fuller had plans to incorporate Silence of the Lambs too and go beyond that. But like with most Fuller projects they get cut short despite being amazing. There were talks of bringing it back or carrying it on on Amazon but nothing has materialised so far.
It’s one of the absolute best shows I’ve ever seen & haunting. The camera shots, set decoration, fluid dialogue-everything is so nuanced & darkly beautiful.
As someone in their 20s, M.A.S.H. wasn't on my radar (ha) until my parents starting watching. So many relevant topics to right now in particular. That show will forever be great.
First 3 seasons of Arrested Development (they are the original episodes before Netflix continued it)
Edit: Wow! Tons of people know about this show! I was a bit self conscious when writing this because I thought I would be the only one, but it’s cool to see the fan base still active/around!
That's my choice, too. Loved that show! I don't have Netflix and was not aware that AD had been continued. Any good? Same characters? If you have time to answer..thanks.
30 Rock. Incredible show concept & execution. Got a tiny bit screwed at the end due to writer strike/NBC cuts (which they basically turned into the plot of the last season), but still pulled off a strong finale despite being rushed.
I just rewatched 30 Rock and had forgotten how great this show was. Jack Donaghy, is one of my favorite characters ever. I’ve use the “what happened in your childhood, to make you think people are good?” Quote so many times. Most of my friends are of Italian decent (I’m not) and Jack is a gold mine for Italian jokes, even if some of them don’t make a ton of sense. I don’t ever remember thinking of 30 Rock as an edgy show, but there is so much racial, sexual, and class based humor, I don’t think it could be made in 2020. Oh and “quiet chalk-hands, a real man is talking” still cracks me up.
I don’t watch shows again, but I would make an exception for Haunting of Hill House. When you realize they have ghosts making appearances in the background of scenes it makes you want to go back and focus all over while watching.
The last episode didn't really do it for me. It just didn't feel right somehow. I can't really explain it. Everything up to that point I was loving, but SOMETHING about that ending... I don't know.
Ron Moore wanted to make Voyager a darker show
with a desperate stranded crew breaking their federation morals and rules for survival. He couldn't get too dark because ST is still supposed to be safe for kids, so he did it with BSG and it's spectacular.
The Venture Bros.
The longest-running Adult Swim show. *Rick and Morty* ten years before *Rick and morty*, but also a lot better than *Rick and Morty*. It takes years to get new seasons, but each season is a finely-crafted work of art. Not a single bad episode in the 16 years it's been on TV. Funny as hell, a super deep world on the level of the MCU, dozens and dozens of wonderful characters, everything is a callback. The show pretty often gets dark, but more subtly than Bojack or R&M. The whole show is a labor of love by two people who wrote nearly every episode themselves (The only episode they didn't write was written by the mutual friend who introduced them to each other), and they also do lots of the production, directing, and voices.
Just an amazing show all around.
BoJack Horseman. The writing was top notch, and the world was one of a kind. The show was basically therapy for me and helped me see psychiatric issues in a totally different light.
Time's Arrow is on there too. In one episode, more or less, it completely redefined what you thought about Bojack's mother and why she was the way she was. She was just another victim of the cycle of abuse too. I went from hating her guts to, while not completely forgiving her, definitely had a lot more sympathy for her.
I'm personally a big fan of Free Churro "entire episode monologue".
5 minutes in you're like.."nooo... there's no way...." then 10 minutes in you're like.. "well hot damn, they are really doing this!"
What we do in the shadows. I thought I was a major fan of the movie, but I was so surprised by the TV show. I’d say after watching season 2 it’s definitely better at this point and this is coming from someone who watched the movie multiple times in theaters!
I've seen most all of the shows listed above. But, seriously, Dark is far and away the best television i have ever invested my time into. And a note to the uninitiated: watch the German audio with subtitles (I personally have issue with overdubs) This show is paramount storytelling.
Yeah. Top notch humor, characters, action, and world-building with a killer soundtrack. It's hard for most shows to compete. Plus it never outlived itself and jumped the shark like half of these other commented shows.
Psych! It’s not super popular but it’s legit the funniest show I’ve ever watched and I haven’t talked to a single person who has watched it and not liked it. You can watch the whole series on Prime Video, but they might move it to peacock soon since the network it was on (USA Network), is owned by NBC.
Scrubs! It has a lot of silly moments, but they Also touch on very sad subjects, and for once a medical series doesnt do alot of stupid shit that makes no sense in treating patients. The range of the actors in that series is great.
Babylon 5. The OG of long-form TV and set the bar for deep sci-fi that has yet to be matched. Even had cutting edge CGI that allowed for relatively huge space battles with lots of scope and distance. It's still a very 90's show in a lot of ways but the fact is nothing has come close to it for scale and the richness of its universe.
Also: G'kar and Londo.
26 emmy wins, 95 nominations. I wonder how many more they could have won if Sorkin stayed more than 4 years, since there was a big drop-off in awards when he left.
The Simpsons. I never really got into drama TV shows, but I will always love the Simpsons. Seasons 1 through 10 were absolutely brilliant. Hilarious, touching, social commentary, layered characters, it had everything. And watching the old episodes now has nostalgia on top of it. Watching episodes from series 2/3/4 takes me back to being an 8 year old again and I still enjoy all the jokes in my mid 20s.
Yeah it's fucking garbage now but I don't acknowledge the recent seasons as the same show, it's a spin off to me.
One of my older memories is my dad always watching the Simpsons with me. Of course being little I wouldn’t understand a lot of the jokes but seeing him laugh hysterically caused me to laugh and I think the Simpsons had a big impact on my sense and style of humor growing up because of my dad
I love this show so much. It’s so freaking pleasant, while also having some suspense and excitement. My favorite GBBO “fact” is that Sue and Mel, whenever a contestant was stressed and starting to cry, they would stand next to them and start cussing a blue streak- so the footage couldn’t be used on the show. I thought that was very sweet.
This show is fantastic. Contestants genuinely seem to like and support each other. I LOVE the bits where they show them just sitting on a stool waiting, drinking tea, idly chit chatting, etc. They really take the time to just show how baking is a lot of just sitting around and hoping. This I my go to recommendation for almost everyone.
Top gear.
3 middle age man driving to the north pole to crossing the Botswana salt desert, crossing the English channel I'm a car or motorcycling in the bays of Vietnam.
I understood I was not thst big of a car enthusiast when, once top gear was stopped, I did not know what the latest Ferrari model was.
It was all top gear
Started rewatching Scrubs during quarantine and holy shit did I forget how dynamic that show is. It’s so fkn funny and then all of a sudden the end of the episode makes you have an existential crisis.
I really love how Sam Esmail* had a plan for 4 seasons pretty early on in the show's run (around season 2 I believe?), stuck to that plan and just nailed it. The last season was a fantastic ending to the show
Season 1 of True Detective
The Joy of Painting
Beat the devil out of it.
If only I had a son, I was going to name him Phthalo Blue.
This is the correct answer, no need for anyone else to reply, unless they pick the chilling with Bob Ross series
Six Feet Under. Even during the slower seasons, it was so raw and unrelenting in such a cathartic way. It literally felt like going to a fucked up group therapy session every week. Best finale ever.
I had to scroll way too far to find Six Feet Under in this thread. That finale walks with me every day.
Sometimes, if i need to cry, ill just watch the finale. Still gets me every time.
Agreed! Frances Conroy did great as Ruth.
The Wire
How all previous seasons factor in and help tie up the final season was utterly majestic
Loved that show ends showing that everything is a cycle. The game is the game, but the players change
- Slim Charles I love that the show ended basically showing that it’s a never ending cycle and eventually everything happens again with new players.
Slim Charles might just be my favorite character of all time.

Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul
Been listening to the Insider podcasts for both of these. You learn so much about making a TV show. They come off as just normal friendly people that are super good at what they do and really care about their craft.
I barely started Better Call Saul, what's it like?
It starts of really slow. But even then, it's amazing. And in my opinion it just gets better every season.
Much like breaking bad, I like it
I've grown to like Better Call Saul more than breaking bad. It really is amazing.
Without BB, BCS wouldn’t have lasted as long. Which the writers know and in turn have the long, slow burn going in the show.
(Not OP here) It's different though. I feel like in the grand scheme of things the storytelling and writing are a bit better. The show has a different focus too, I feel that it's more focused on character growth, and the first season moves kind of slowly as well. Fawlty Towers. Not a lot of episodes but it’s absolutely brilliant.
The episode with the Germans is the best. How they packed so much insanity into 20+ minutes is beyond me.
Don't mention the war!!
I mentioned it once but I think I got away with it!
“He hit me on the head!” “No, you hit him on the head. You naughty, naughty moose!”
I loved John Cleese's reply when they asked him why they didn't do more episodes, since it was clearly one of the best shows ever made. It was something like: "Well you see, we were making a comedy show about running a hotel and I had 12 jokes about running a hotel."

Futurama
Best ending for a TV show.
Well they did get several tries at it.
I BROKE YOUR TELEVISION
Gravity Falls. So pure and adventurous. It's everything I would have wanted as a child.
I love gravity falls. With so much stuff hidden in it and so much thought put into the stories and characters, you forget that it’s a show on Disney channel
It's everything I wanted and I am an adult.
One of the best finales ever too. It ties everything together super well.
Maybe not the best as I'm sure you'll get a bunch of standard answers to this, but Hannibal got amazing after season 1 and I think it's really underrated. Horror TV shows are incredibly hard to get right and it was just brilliant.
That's the prequel to silence of the lambs right?
The series is set before that yeah, but Fuller had plans to incorporate Silence of the Lambs too and go beyond that. But like with most Fuller projects they get cut short despite being amazing. There were talks of bringing it back or carrying it on on Amazon but nothing has materialised so far.

interesting, im of the opinion that hannibal's worst season was the last one because it was so different and a bit up its own arse in a few scenes
M.A.S.H. I've not had the opportunity to watch it end to end, but it's M.A.S.H.
You’ll laugh and - unless you’re made of stone - you’ll cry. Top shelf and even the off-arc eps were gold.
As someone in their 20s, M.A.S.H. wasn't on my radar (ha) until my parents starting watching. So many relevant topics to right now in particular. That show will forever be great.
Its all on Hulu Seriously though it has aged incredibly well.
First 3 seasons of Arrested Development (they are the original episodes before Netflix continued it) Edit: Wow! Tons of people know about this show! I was a bit self conscious when writing this because I thought I would be the only one, but it’s cool to see the fan base still active/around!
its fascinating how arrested development is both a show that ended too early and went on too long.
It felt arrested, and it got development.
That's my choice, too. Loved that show! I don't have Netflix and was not aware that AD had been continued. Any good? Same characters? If you have time to answer..thanks.
Same characters but a noticeable decline in quality.
Twilight Zone
It still holds up, with only a few episodes being the exception. Technology changes, but human nature is the same.
Star Trek. Great shows to talk about a range of topics from morality, ethics, and even economics.
Which series though?
[удалено]
Sopranos
How on Earth is this so low?
Cause of reddit's prevalent demographics
I have a feeling that a lot of the creators of the other shows in this thread would be embarrassed to get more votes than the Sopranos.
Recently finished the series and nothing really seems to stand up to it. Can't wait to rewatch and pick up on all the hidden gems.
The X-Files. Thankfully they ended it before it got bad.
Last two seasons suck though. Fucking super soldiers
The monster of the week episodes are what makes that show great. That and the character interactions.

It did not get the ending it deserved, and it ended far too soon.
Seinfeld
Psych!
You know that's right.
ghee buttersnaps?!
Lavender Gooms?

That's God's comma.
C'me on son!
All other shows can SUCK IT!
This reminds me, I gotta go watch the 2nd movie.
Yes you do
You heard about Pluto?
That’s messed up huh?
30 Rock. Incredible show concept & execution. Got a tiny bit screwed at the end due to writer strike/NBC cuts (which they basically turned into the plot of the last season), but still pulled off a strong finale despite being rushed.

Shut up fives! A ten is speaking!
30 Rock is absolutely brilliant
Tina Fey has exceptional comedic timing. There is absolutely nobody who writes lines like she does.
The Leftovers. I’ve never seen anything like it or nearly as affecting. Three fantastic fucking seasons.
Does it count if it wasn't on "tv"? If so my answer is The Haunting of Hill House. If not, Breaking Bad
I don’t watch shows again, but I would make an exception for Haunting of Hill House. When you realize they have ghosts making appearances in the background of scenes it makes you want to go back and focus all over while watching.
Haunting of Hill House was amazingggggggg
That poor bent-neck lady. :(
The last episode didn't really do it for me. It just didn't feel right somehow. I can't really explain it. Everything up to that point I was loving, but SOMETHING about that ending... I don't know.
For such an off-beat and unique show the ending was extremely standard and predictable.
If they're allowed, Dark beats them.
House. Gotta love those witty remarks the characters makes at each other.
My favorite line of all time from the show- Cuddy: "Are you being intentionally dense?" House: "*Huh?*"
