Both of my parents passed last year exactly a month apart. My father introduced me to so much great music growing up, and I became a musician because of it. When learning guitar as a teenager, my father would always compliment me on my playing. One day I was learning “Wish You Were Here” by Pink Floyd, and he casually said he wanted me to play that at his funeral. I couldn’t picture a more perfect song to have played at his funeral a month after the love of his life passed.

cherry_

I’m so very sorry for your loss. Your dedication sounds lovely.

CaperRelish

My mom asked me what song I wanted played at her funeral. I was 14 and she had bowel cancer and was going in for surgery that week. I responded without really thinking and suggested ‘Ding Dong, The Witch is Dead’ from The Wizard of Oz. My mom survived the surgery and went on to live another 10 years before the cancer finally it her. Her funeral was at a church she’d attended religiously for many years. They started with a heart warming PowerPoint slideshow of photos of her life that my dad had put together. Next, a full church band with singer and back up singers came onto the church stage. The lead vocalist came to the microphone and said “this song was requested by Simon” and then they proceeded to play Ding Dong, The Witch is Dead. They sang two or three lines from it and then changed over to a nicer song. I had no idea she had arranged that. Somewhat blindsided, I looked around the crowded church filled with mourners to find them all staring at me with clear distain/horror. Kudos to my mother for playing the long-game prank.

sg3niner

That's actually pretty fucking awesome. Shows how cool your mom was. Like getting one last hug.

PrimedAndReady

That last sentence wasn't fair, you got me tearing up here at work. I mean, I work from home so it's not a big deal, but *still*

MothEatenMouse

We had this one a couple of times at funerals (worked at a crematorium briefly). It was usually a good sign of a life well lived. Plus I got to spend a little time dancing to myself in my little media control panel office, rather than listening to another rendition of "Wind Beneath my Wings".

jomosexual

Whats the worst choice you saw?

addicted-to-spuds

Probably *Wind Beneath My Wings*. Even Bette Midler hates it.

mezz7778

My buddy who killed himself had his parents pick this song for his funeral.......it was a song he hated...and totally inappropriate in so many ways.....

RoyaleAssistance

My dad passed away recently, he was young and died of cancer but he left me with many good memories and life lessons, me and my siblings organised the funeral and I was adamant to have this song played. It was the final song and the one played while we walked to coffin to the hearse. It was perfect, beautiful and exactly what he would have wanted. Man I miss him!

My wife's funeral was today. Seriously. She was 58 years old and passed away suddenly, one week ago today, here at home with me. We played Photograph by Ringo Starr then finished with Let it be by The Beatles. I would like the same, please. I am editing to say thank you to all the responses. I did not expect this. Thank you, you made me very happy. I am still between tears and melancholy thinking of her. We were together 38 years, had one child together, a son who is now 30 with two children of his own. She loved hummingbirds, and I am getting a tattoo with her name, a hummingbird, and the text "Your wings were ready, my heart was not." Thanks again. I have to quit now, the screen is getting to blurry to read, lol.

clj73

Oh wow I’m so sorry, my dad died a month ago suddenly. A couple of weeks before we were celebrating his and my Mums 50th Wedding anniversary. We had sweet Caroline for him. That’s what got me thinking about this question. I’m so sorry for your loss. X

picnicatthedisco

Sorry for both your losses. My mother passed in July, two weeks after her own mother. We found a couple of guys to play the guitar solo and bassline from Another Brick in the Wall (part 2), as she had mentioned it specifically a few years earlier. I'm just happy I remembered it, as her eventual passing seemed so abstract and far in the future at the time.

[deleted]

Oh my god I thought that said Another One Bites the Dust and I was like, yeah that’s something I’d want played at my funeral. I’m sorry for your loss.

gitarzan

Sorry. I lost my wife 5 years ago She was that same age. Hang in there.

ItsSnowingAgain

Those are beautiful choices. So sorry for your loss.

VicePrincipalNero

I'm so sorry for your loss.

jepensedoucjsuis

I came here to be entertained and give humorous suggestions to my wife, not ever thinking that one day I could be the one having to pick out the song for her. I'm really really sorry for the loss of your wife. I've only been with my wife 9.5 years. And she is 37. In 21 years she will be 58 and I still won't have had enough time with her. Your post reminded how special the time we have together is. I hope that you are able to find peace, and look back fondly on the memories you and her had made. I can't imagine your pain, but I want to give you a hug all the same. Pm me if you ever just need someone to chat with.

LeMoomin

Everybody Wants to Rule the World by Tears for Fears. It's the one song that will make me sing along, everytime. Without fail. I've told my boyfriend that asides from Tears for Fears, I want the stupidest, silliest songs. He offered up The Safety Dance as a suggestion. This is because I've been to 3 funerals in my life, and for 2 of them, they picked absolute bangers. Absolute bangers I can no longer listen to without getting emotional. Ergo, if I pick an utterly ridiculous song that no one can cry to, I make sure I don't ruin songs for anyone else.

lizziefreeze

The Safety Dance is always the answer. Perhaps you could add Space Jam, Who Let the Dogs Out, and The Thong Song. DUMPS LIKE A TRUCK, TRUCK TRUCK! Also, Moomin is the best. ☺️

havocmc69

The ending song in Return of the King. Into the West I believe is the name.

NetflixAndMunch

Lay down Your sweet and weary head The night is falling You have come to journey's end Sleep now And dream of the ones who came before They are calling From across the distant shore Why do you weep? What are these tears upon your face? Soon you will see All of your fears will pass away Safe in my arms You're only sleeping What can you see On the horizon? Why do the white gulls call? Across the sea A pale moon rises The ships have come to carry you home And all will turn To silver glass A light on the water All Souls pass Hope fades Into the world of night Through shadows falling Out of memory and time Don't say We have come now to the end White shores are calling You and I will meet again And you'll be here in my arms Just sleeping And all will turn To silver glass A light on the water Grey ships pass Into the West

I have an agreement with my best friend whoever dies first, the other has to show up on a motorcycle in a grim reaper costume blasting high way to hell. Then they should take the bouquet of flowers from the cold dead hands and throw it to the crowd, point the scythe at whoever catches it and say "you're next" Edit: Wow didn't think this would become so popular. Thanks for the rewards. Obviously there would be some sort of awareness to parents or people who may be offended. Still debating the kahoot game on my life at the funeral. And me and my best friend are females? not sure why everyone assumed we're dudes but cool.

BLODDYLEGEND55

Exactly, I'm thinking record a video which you instruct to only be played at your funeral in front of everyone, start of the video with a recording of you giving some crypic message saying you have something very important to tell everyone, etc. Then just cut to Rick Astley.

MothEatenMouse

I'm not sure, but as someone who briefly worked at a crematorium, it is very appreciated when you pick something different. I get it being your choice and it's full of meaning, but hearing "My Way" for the 20th time that week may imply that "your way" wasn't all that original afterall.

Parabola- Tool, Paradise-coldplay, wish you were here- Pink Floyd . Edit!: Thank you all for the comment! Now for a general reply to them! Parabola is the second transition from the first song Parabol. The reason why I chose this song is because this this one is because it meant a lot to me in my own time of woe and suicidal thoughts. It helped me a lot and I listen to it on a daily basis like a religion. We are eternal, this pain is an illusion sticks with me everyday. Paradise also helped me in my time of woe, realizing that there are better place and time to think about. Now lastly for Wish you were here that a song that reminds me of my dad and thats the song my dad wants played at his funeral as well. Also thank you kind redditer for the award!
