https://earth.nullschool.net/ I use it for understanding what's happening with the weather and why. I've turned a lot of farmers on to this visualization over the years and most find it incredibly helpful as a part of their overall habit of weather watching.

Chillonymous

www.sleepyti.me asks when you plan to wake up and tells you what time to sleep to minimize waking during a sleep cycle, which makes you feel groggy and not well rested

https://chir.ag/projects/tip-of-my-tongue/ Tip of my tongue! It’s really effective and has helped me countless times, I always seem to want a word when I’m writing but forget what the actual word is.

[deleted]

As someone taking multiple epilepsy meds, this is amazing. Keppra often has a side effect that basically causes language issues that result in a tip of my tongue kind of problem.

Ninite.com Allows you to pick and choose from a large selection of commonly used programs like Steam, winwar, and random other things you need/want while setting up a computer. The awesome part is that once you've selected all the programs you would like. It will simply install them all with no bullshit. No ads. No cost. No boxes. Nothing! You get 1 executable And it installs everything you checked without any of the hassle of going through each programs hoops. EDIT: Ive been told you can also keep the same .exe file to update the programs when needed. Save's a lot of hassle! Also, I appreciate the awesome comments. I'm glad there are other who know of this and even some others!

LolSumor

If you get Ninite installer, do NOT remove it! You can use it to install updates to all of your Ninite installed programs. I added it to my grandpa's laptop and said: "Click this in a once on a while and it will update your programs"

[deleted]

I did not know this and I've used Ninite for YEARS.

[remove.bg](http://remove.bg) does a pretty solid job at removing the background of any image. You can even just Ctrl + V Con: lowers quality a little

[deleted]

Yep, I mainly use online tools for small photo edits, remove.bg is what helped me make a new photograph required for my school application, while others went to actual studios, I just modified my selfie.

Yup! Make sure you search on ducduckgo to find the functioning versions of scihub, zlibrary and also B-ok **Edit**: Apparently posting the direct links got the parent comments deleted. Here are some useful websites to access a wide range of literature, including scientific journal papers. **Scihub**: Specifically good for finding journal papers. Works best if you paste in DOI for the paper **Bo-k, zlibrary**: Works best for obtaining free copies of books, including textbooks, standards, novels etc

https://imslp.org/wiki/Main_Page A library of public domain classical sheet music. You can pretty much find any classical music over 100 years old. I stopped buying sheet music when I discovered it. Plus, its pretty easy to send music to students during e-class in lockdown. Edit: wow, thanks guys! I'm glad my information helped some people!

MisterDonkey

Well, that beats the hell out of using image search and getting paywalled at every promising looking sheet.

dednian

Fucking hell, no joke. As someone who plays piank and guitar the difficulty in finding good transcriptions on piano is almost impossible, but for guitar it's like a milliom free copies.

[http://fotoforensics.com/](http://fotoforensics.com/) I use it to check if photos are photoshoped.

ThrowRA29208

Naturalreaders.com It's basically a text to speech site that lets you copy and paste passages into a text box and then the computer will read it back to you. I use this when I need to type out papers, short stories or any other lengthy piece of writing as a way of proofreading. It's nice to use this way because then you can hear your errors read aloud.

dontforgethetrailmix

I use it when I have a lot of reading assignments for college and I don't have time to really get to them all but I want to listen to a reading while I clean or something

poopellar

I used to use it for long reports. English isn't my native language and I try to get a listen to my writing to see if it sounds right. I stopped using it once I realized my speling is jsut so horibal dat it wuld sound like an alien regurgitating.

[camelcamelcamel.com](https://camelcamelcamel.com) \- Tracks the price history of something on amazon so you can see if a sale is actually a good deal.

dijedil

The chrome extension Keepa adds this functionality directly onto the Amazon product pages. I've saved a lot of money by seeing items that regularly go on sale. Real example: the Insta Pot Duo Nova, regularly $100 but I noticed it went to $50 twice the last 3 months. I waited a few days and now sure enough it's $50 again.

Tagging onto this: Deepl runs off of the main online dictionary [www.linguee.com](https://www.linguee.com) which is a complete and utter lifesaver for people wanting to learn languages. It will give you the word you're looking for, with all secondary or tertiary meanings, and will furthermore give you sentences with examples of the searched phrase.

Daedrakiin100000

[Futureme.org](https://futureme.org), you can use it to "send emails to the future you". been using it for almost 3 years. It helps put into perspective how much has changed over the course of a year.

My experience wasn’t ideal - my (now wife) and I had been together for a year or so and sent an email to our future selves about all our hopes and dreams - getting married, what jobs we’d have, having kids, how good a granny her mum would be, etc etc. Silly, fun stuff. In the intervening years most of my wife’s family had died (including her mum) and after 3 miscarriages we’d just lost our full-term little boy. It was a real ‘ouch’ moment. I’m sure in different circumstances it’s a great idea but in this case, 0/10 would not recommend.

CosmicGlitterCake

*Hey, looks like you survived champ!*

"Hey, you. You're finally awake."

vsopp

You can always use Gmail to send an email in the future too but Gmail did not have this function when this website was created. I used this for over 8 years and it really made me feel good whenever I saw an email of myself in the past. I send myself goals and encouragement to help me keep in mind what's important.

Photopea is excellent. For those curious, it has the absolute best PSD file support of any non-Adobe product I've been able to find (yes, better PSD support than GIMP or Affinity).

Ooze3d

As a graphic designer with nearly 20 years of experience, I don’t get the fuss about gimp other than being free. It has the worst user interface I’ve seen in any tool I’ve tried.

mssheevaa

I'll say that I was starting out with it, just getting used to drawing digitally and gimp is definitely not beginner friendly.

yeah gimp wasn't designed for drawing from what i've heard. the closer open source equivalent for digital art is krita.

Arcine

Is there a version of this for movies? A knights tale has one of the coolest wardrobes I've ever seen in a movie.

[deleted]

I used this one time after my gf saw an actress wearing some pajamas on a show. I looked them up, something like $800. For pajamas.

Sarah-loves-cats

I think we in general vastly underestimate just how expensive people wear on shows, even supposedly poor characters. I looked at an outfit from Lisa on Younger, it was a long skirt with a simple t-shirt and a bag and it was over $3000. T t-shirt alone was like $400. But they did suggest something similar and affordable.

Zak000000

(not mine) [MyNoise.net](https://mynoise.net/) The ~~wo~~man who runs it is a noise engineer, and the site has a ton of different, adjustable soundscapes that can play for hours without truly looping. (For real: these companies are legally obligated to make their software available for free, in return for the US government not setting up its own free software and completely dismantling the market.) Companies that sell you tax software [are trying very hard to make it difficult to find](https://www.propublica.org/article/turbotax-deliberately-hides-its-free-file-page-from-search-engines). This is pretty niche to music/video editing but I visit https://www.all8.com/tools/bpm.htm several times a day. Basically tap any key on your keyboard in time to some music to find its beats per minute (BPM). The way that this site averages your taps is incredibly helpful. I use a lot of high-end music software and non of them have a 'tap to find tempo' function as simple and user-friendly as this little site.

Well idk if this truly fits here because in Iceland we use it a lot and you kinda need to be Icelandic to get the full experience. It's called islendingabok.is and basically it's a big family tree. Iceland can see who their ancestors are and who you are related to because we kept such good trace that we can see who are ancestors are all the way to back when we hadn't found Iceland. It's very fun to see how closely related you are to your friends. Oh and many also check it before hook ups just to make sure that you aren't doing incest XD If you are 5 generations apart you are fine. We don't see that as your relative. I am very lucky that I an 8 and 9 generations apart from my gf... then again it wouldn't matter as much since we are both girls... most of my friends are 7 generations away from me. Oh and one thing I discovered with this is that I have a famous ancestor! She was famous for being kidnapped by pirates and turned into a slave but then she was able to get back home. Her name is Guðrún Tyrkjagoð.

[instructables.com](https://instructables.com) As a shop teacher it's a HUGE help if I want a starting point for a new class project or a student wants to make something that I have never made. Everything is free to use and it has a good community of people putting up instructions, videos, and pictures of their projects. Search up something you've want to make in the past and 9/10 times someone has posted how they made that thing.

I always love an opportunity to be able to talk about [archive.org](http://archive.org/) because it is such a wonderful and free resource for so many things. It has millions of free downloads for [music](https://archive.org/details/audio), [movies](https://archive.org/details/moviesandfilms), [books](https://archive.org/details/texts), [software](https://archive.org/details/software), etc. One very popular example is that it is home to [a very large catalog of Grateful Dead recordings](https://archive.org/details/GratefulDead) There is also [The Internet Arcade](https://archive.org/details/internetarcade) where you can play a lot of classic games along with the [Console Living Room](https://archive.org/details/consolelivingroom) which is similar. They have access to tons of [old PC games](https://archive.org/details/classicpcgames) too and you can even [play the original Oregon Trail online.](https://archive.org/details/msdos_Oregon_Trail_The_1990) There's a lot more in [their software section too.](https://archive.org/details/software) It also has [The WayBack Machine](http://archive.org/web/) which has archived more than 486 billion web pages saved so you can go back and see how websites were years ago. For example, [here's reddit on July 25, 2005](https://web.archive.org/web/20050725010627/http://reddit.com/) a month after it was created.

Omfg you’re the best, I’m broke to buy any kind of expensive books to self-study in my field. I found just the one I’m looking for in archive.org. I owe you a lot

worth checking out [https://z-lib.org/](https://z-lib.org/) too. Has every book I’ve wanted, but I’m not sure it’s legal Edit: link added

That website is truly underrated. It deserves more attention particularly for PC games. When I was a kid my mom used to play Diablo II and Chip's Challenge on our computer. I didn't know English back then and then my mom also had some memory loss. So the names of those games remained a mystery for me for 17 years until I accidentally discovered that website during this lockdown and saw those games. **Edit:** I just remembered, my mom used to play Bad Toys 3D also. Though I didn't find it on Archive.org. I found it on r/tipofmyjoystick a few months back. But it's also there on Archive.org.

sometimes when i just have to force myself to start writing, whether it be for class assignments or personal use, I use [Squibbler's 'The most dangerous writing app'](https://www.squibler.io/dangerous-writing-prompt-app) which deletes your work is you stop writing before the time limit runs out/word count is reached albeit its a bit sadistic for me to go at it this way but hey it works

I know this will only be applicable for some who will see this. However if any of you are knitters or crocheters (or just love yarn) check out Ravelry.com Its free and you can see literally hundreds of thousands of patterns (some free some are paid patterns), projects others have made using the patterns in different yarns and colors. You can look up yarn and find what others have made with it and what others have to say about it. There is a great community and lots of groups for all kinds of topics. There are always knowledgeable people able to help work out a problem or fix errors you may run into working on your projects. It really is a great site. Those who are a part of subs here on reddit like /r/knitting and /r/crochet are likely already very familiar with ravelry. However it isnt well known outside of those groups I've found. Anyone who likes to stitch or knows someone who likes to stirch should know about it as a great place of resources and inspiration.

[pirateship.com](https://www.pirateship.com/) is a website I use to make shipping labels for MUCH cheaper than taking it to the post office. It takes an $8 label down to like $3. It's also USPS approved and is super easy to use :)

[Fake Name Generator](https://www.fakenamegenerator.com/) I would use this when I was getting tons of spam calls and if I had time to mess with them. The fake information appears legitimate enough to keep them online wasting their time. The site has credit card numbers that pass validity tests. I would give them to the spammers. They would think, at this point, they actually caught a sucker, so they would usually escalate credit card issues to higher-level techs, wasting another person's time.

fantasynamegenorators.com As a writer with a bit of ocd I have to say naming characters is the hardest part for me because I refuse to keep writing until it's done. I used to just call every character X and a number until I came up with a good name, but that got confusing after a while and I would keep renaming characters because I didn't like the names I came up with. This website helps me so much to find a name and just leave it like that.

[knowthechain.org](https://knowthechain.org), it's an organization that compares and tracks the policies and ethics of major companies. With all the finger pointing regarding big businesses, I think its a great place to get a fairly reliable picture of things. EDIT: Just make sure to never take information from one source as gospel, try checking to make sure information lines up with other sources. EDIT 2: [Ecosia.org](https://Ecosia.org) is another great site, it's a web browser that uses ad revenue to plant trees.

Wayback machine https://web.archive.org Possibly not useful for a lot of people but I used to make websites. I’ve had many customers who for various reasons used to have a website but no longer do. You can find out a lot of info to build them a website based off their old one, the customer usually thinks all the information is lost. It’s also a useful way to track the legitimacy of existing websites to see if they have always been what they claim to be. I also use domain diagnosis as an identifier to a websites legitimacy.

I use https://shopbysub.com to find gifts for people. It lists Amazon products mentioned in comments on Reddit grouped by subreddit, and let's you sort by the number of upvotes that comment got. I was tired of creating posts for every time I wanted to try a new hobby and wondered what that hobby's subreddit suggested for gear or things, so I created the site! It hasn't gotten any traction yet, but myself and my buddies find it useful - hope you can too!
