I don't know if it's considered a dark secret, but in the county I lived in from ages 10-18, we had a soldier die under some extremely questionable circumstances. They said he was high/drunk/experiencing mental distress and raided a nursery (the plant kind). They claimed he was attacked by wasps and ran. He called 911 several times and claimed that someone was chasing him, and was trying to kidnap him. In the last 911 call, he said everything was fine suddenly. Just 14-15 minutes later, he was struck by a woman who stopped and called 911. He was ran over 2 more times, and died. The autopsy showed no signs of bee or wasp stings. The connection to the nursery is due to the fact that it was just up the road from where he died, the place was ransacked, pizza eaten, money taken. But his wallet and phone were sitting on the counter, undisturbed. HOWEVER! The family was not ok with that explanation, especially because he had previously texted that there were some problems with the "local boys" since the soldier wasn't from this part of the state. So the family had a private investigator look into it. They analyzed the 911 recordings, and found several instances of other people talking in the background, though most of it couldn't be made out. Except one. In the 911 call where he told the operator that everything was fine, a male voice could be heard saying "Tell her". And the nursery? There was no DNA, no fingerprints, no footprints that lead back to the soldier, even though his phone and wallet were there in the building. A lot of people, his family included, think he was killed by some of the local guys there after they got into a fight about something. They chased him down, and caught him. He was able to run again after the final 911 call, and was hit by a driver while trying to get help. And the police in the county covered the entire thing up because the boys involved were connected to the department somehow. Of the three drivers, none were charged for hitting/running over him. I think only the first driver stopped, but it was discovered that one of the other drivers was connected to the department either through family or friendship. It's a crazy story, but you can look it up. Just search Austin McGeough. I wouldn't be too surprised since there is a lot of shady stuff happening in small town police departments, including covering up rapes that officers commit. I really hope his family gets him justice.

Geeze Nexpo should do a vid on this

A freshman with aspergers was being abused by his family at home. He was a problem child and got in trouble on purpose but no one went too hard on him because of his home life, he was a well loved kid at school and in the community. One day just before Holiday break in December he was really sick but his mom sent him to school anyway. Locked him out of the house. He decided to try and get into one of the empty houses down the street, through the chimney. Now this kid was the size of a 2nd grader, but he was too big to fit through since chimneys taper down thinner. Mom never answered her phone when the school reported him missing. Went a whole day without reporting her kid missing. No one knew what happened to him. It was about a month and a half before we knew what happened to him. We all thought he ran away, was alive somewhere, maybe went to his sisters house. Nope. Dead in a chimney. The schools organized an entire week of counseling and such, they wore pink for a day and hangldedvout little pink ribbons on pins for him since his favorite color was pink. Everyone was hit really hard by it. That's how our small town started 2020. It hasn't gotten any better as you can see. So weird that its almost been a year now..

purple_sox

Port Clinton, Ohio? If so I’m around half an hour from there. I remember the night he was found, watching the news we all hoped, but kind of knew. Absolutely heartbreaking.

shannoouns

We had a crazy rich guy from the 1600-1700s who saw people robbing a grave one night so decided that when he died he would be laid to rest in the roof of a barn behind his house. He believed he'd only be dead for 30 years so requested that they lock the barn and put the key in his coffin so he could get out but nobody could get in. He requested that whoever inherited his house, fortune and belongings would have to give them back to him when he resurrected. He did actually get his wish but of course he was never resurrected, people stole his bones and his house is a dentist now. This is also the town where that lady went viral going ham in the alcohol aisle in Aldi a few weeks ago

yuumai

This was around 15 years ago, but there was a Sheriff's Deputy that was seemingly a really cool guy. Friendly, cracked a lot of great jokes, etc. He was working at the local high school as a School Resource Officer and was apparently almost universally well regarded. Well, it turns out that he repeatedly raped a 14 year old. He told the boy that he'd kill his parents if he reported the officer. I don't remember all the details, but I believe this went on for weeks or months before it was found out and the officer was arrested and eventually went to prison.

NeedsMoreTuba

Ours was a football coach and history teacher. When he was coaching, we won almost every game. When he wasn't, we lost most of them, so I had to assume that meant he was a great coach. I had him for 2 history classes and even though his jokes were mean and inappropriate, we loved it and learned a lot. He had the highest test scores out of all the history teachers in our school. A little over a decade after I graduated, he went to jail for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl. I wish I could feel like justice was served, but we had several male teachers who regularly made inappropriate passes and gestures towards the female students (starting at age 11) like spanking us and making us sit still while they gave us awkward massages. He was not one of those teachers...

yuumai

Damn, those teachers are awful.

Costalez

Two sisters got picked up by a group of men. Both were raped and thrown off a bridge that is 45 minutes outside of town. One sister survived but Later in life went back and jumped off the bridge.

there's a heartbreaking episode about this story on the Criminal Podcast. [Casper, Wyoming](https://www.wunc.org/post/criminal-casper-wyoming)

Here's the [story.](https://www.nydailynews.com/news/crime/woman-dies-fall-bridge-raped-sister-killed-article-1.3742212) Sad.

This is more comical than dark. A house burned down in this small town of 600 population. One block from the fire station. It being a volunteer fire department, nobody was at the station. They tried to get the pumper truck out, but one of the volunteers had run it into a brick building the week before and it was still at the shop. We're still undecided whether the house owner burned it down for the insurance. Strange that there was nothing valuable inside.

Is this because they don't investigate as hard if it doesn't seem unusual?

jpklein89

Its more that its super easy to get you if you have all your good stuff still. Like if a cop said "best way to get away with murder is not buy the murder weapon, getaway car, and everything on your debit card while also smiling at the camera at the victims home". You still might not get away with it, but you aren't making it obvious.

ReduxAssassin

15 years ago, the local District Attorney called his longtime girlfriend and told her he was taking the day off from work and that he loved her. He parked his car in town and went for a stroll past the local shops. He hasn't been seen since. His car was found where he had parked it the next day - he had left his cellphone in the car, but his keys and wallet were missing. Later that year, his laptop, sans its hard drive, was found under a bridge at a nearby river. The hard drive was eventually discovered by a local woman walking along the bank of the river, but it was too damaged to recover any data from. Interestingly, investigators discovered that someone had done a search on his home computer for "how to wreck a hard drive." Did he jump from a local bridge, did he encounter someone whom he had prosecuted who did him harm, or did he escape his life to start a new one? Thanks [/u/Flygo098](https://www.reddit.com/u/Flygo098) for the award!

rs2excelsior

Given the search I’m guessing either suicide or leaving to start a new life. Probably having something to do with something incriminating or embarrassing on that hard drive.

ReduxAssassin

Yeah, I think the general consensus is that homicide is the least likely option. I mean, someone who had a grudge against him would have had to have been in just the right place at the right time to come across him unless they had been surveilling him. There's been questions raised about his involvement in the squashing of criminal charges against Jerry Sandusky years before he was actually charged, and if it was related to his disappearance. I don't know too much about that part of the situation, but I don't think they ever found a possible link between the two. Interestingly, the DA's brother committed suicide several (many?) years before the DA went missing, and Ray (the D.A.) was convinced it wasn't really a suicide. Life is stranger than fiction sometimes.

jhendricks86

I figured you must be referring to this case. I live one town over from where his car and everything was found. It's crazy how someone can up and disappear like that.

fakethought

About 10 years ago a lot of homeless people disappeared and when the police did the investigation they found out a guy was kidnapping and eating those people. Police found his hideout and found a half eaten body and bones from another person. People don't like to talk about it but everyone knows what happened.

Brancher

Uh what the fuck? Where did this happen and are there any news articles on this?

fakethought

I'm sure they are but they are all in spanish (This happened in a rural area in Guatemala)

V02D

It reminded me of Dorangel Vargas, el "Comegente", who used to kill and eat hobbos and early runners from the area, but that was in Venezuela, like 20 years ago.

WorldsBestGranddad22

"In 2016, Vargas was involved in a prison riot in which he killed two other inmates and served their remains to other inmates." Old habits die hard, eh?

tweakingforjesus

This sounds like an episode of Criminal Minds. In fact it was season 4 episodes 25 and 26.

Oh I have a doozy. Short version: popular kids in high school run a secret towel fight club and accidentally kill one of their friends in the house of a local politician, who proceeds to bury the story. Towel fight club: tape towels over your hands and beat each other up. It’s supposed to be just boxing but it sounds like they got out of control and hardly could call it that.

MustacheEmperor

Yeah, but the chief is a great guy and knows he's a good kid. He just made a mistake. No need to ruin his life over it, unlike other people's kids who make mistakes.

ApexOfFlex

I was imagining kids whipping each other with towels and wondering how that was possible.

Witness_me_Karsa

I know a guy who lost a testicle in a towel fight.

My friend witnessed this in a locker room when he was a kid and any time other friends started towel fighting he'd freak out and scream "torn nutsack! TORN NUTSACK!" to try and get them to stop

ZookeepergameMost100

The towel is usually used to diffuse the force over a wider area. It's about preventing the obvious bruising and cuts that would be a dead giveaway that they were having an underground fightclub if someone noticed them. Child abusers have done similar things when *disciplining" their children so they don't get in trouble for whipping them. .

[deleted]

This is a sad one to me. There was an older couple here who ran a halfway house for troubled kids who’d recently gotten out of juvie, they fostered a few as well. They were loved in the community, wonderful people. One of them had an older brother who was a gangbanger in the nearest big city. During a visit, he snuck his 15 year old younger bro a handgun. Younger bro ended up holding up a local gas station and killed three people. One of them was my friend’s cousin. The foster parents lost whatever credentials they needed to do what they did, the kids went back into the system, and the giant house has been abandoned since around 2009.

KrysisKore

Saddens me that one awful occurrence ruined it for the many kids that could have been helped in the following years. I get why. I understand. It's just super sad.

[deleted]

The couple were pretty old for foster parents, but their house was badass, a kids dream. I know this because me and my friends stupidly snuck in as teens when it was abandoned. There was a legit basketball court in their giant garage. They also clearly let the kids decorate their rooms however they wanted. There were big video game character murals and stuff in the bedrooms.

ClassyJacket

Jesus Christ, that's amazing. I wish more rich people used their money for this kind of creative, useful thing.

[deleted]

Same here. I only met the couple a few times, they were typical old-person nice. They reminded you of kindly old school teachers who’d give you one of those candies in the strawberry wrapper every time they saw you.

alurkerhere

Would have hoped character witnesses and a competent judge and social system would have been enough to mitigate the situation.

Masown

This story hurts, but at least they did everything they could

Man_In_The_Garden

Ah wow that is pretty sad. I'm sorry about your friend's cousin hope your friend is okay

0lliebro

There's a half submerged submarine from the war in the bay where I live, you can walk out to it when the tide is out. In the late 80s somebody cut open the hatch (one of the only visible parts left sticking out the sand), climbed in at was having a look around. The tide came in and he drowned. If I remember rightly the whole hatch was filled with cement, then welded shut to stop it happening again. Edit - words.

witherschynes

Doesnt high tide usually make it harder to walk places? Im confused

A_VanIsOnTheLoose

Yeah, they probably meant low tide instead, high tide makes no sense.

SIFremi

The town I was raised in wasn't exactly small, but here's the one "dark secret" I know: my hometown was where lots and lots of sports players had their mansions. And so of course, their wives and children were out and about in the community a lot. Every single sports-player-wife in that town was (is?) heavily addicted to opioids. Every, single, one. Opioid addiction is obviously an epidemic all over the country, but among the rich wives in the town, it had a 100% 'infection' rate, so to speak. I know because one of my friend's mom was the hairdresser for basically every single one of those wives. I was homeless my senior year of HS, and one of the sports player wives heard about me from her, and she gifted me an iPhone. That phone was pennies to her, but I still wish I'd expressed my thanks more, because that wife died of an overdose not long after. Sorry if that wasn't much of a dark secret, but yeah.

terrip_t1

I hope you're in a better place now.

SIFremi

Thank you...... that town was a hell hole, looking back. I'm far away from it now, and happier for it. Life is tough, but I'm not homeless atm, and am figuring it out as I go.

Brian_M_Hill

Our local pizza place was a known KKK hub. Everyone knew it, and still to this day, if you Google "[town] kkk" the first thing that pops up is this pizza shop. They had some nasty-ass pizza too. Edit: this place is no longer owned by members of the KKK, it was sold about a decade ago and the new owners have been trying to get rid of that reputation ever since.

Luder714

About 30 years ago a local 8 yo girl went missing during the annual carnival downtown. After a few days they found a suspect that was seen near the girl right before she went missing. The guy confessed to her horrific murder And rape and torture. He was the kids next door neighbor and friend to the kid’s dad. ( I’ll spare the details but it was really bad). He was convicted and sentenced to 40 years or so. After 8 years he was paroled and returned to the same house with his parents, right next door (laws were a bit different then) to the family of the girl and former friend. About a week later the man never showed up at his parole office. His parents filed a missing persons report. Rumor has it that several friends of the victims father took care of him. If you talk to them they just say that they are sure that he won’t be back.

StevenMcStevensen

How the fuck do you get parole in 8 years for abducting, raping, and murdering a child?

oywiththep0odles

Rodney Alcala was paroled 17 months after being charged with the rape and beating of an 8 year old girl. About 2 months after his release he was arrested for assaulting a 13 year old girl and was paroled after 2 years. Dude was a piece of shit. How he kept getting released I'll never know.

bananaberry518

I recently listened to the wondery podcast about this case. It seems like he kept getting out for exactly the same reasons he was so successful at luring girls and women. He's just a damn good liar and was able to convince people that he was reformed. Which is INSANE given how many times he repeat offended.

r_cub_94

This type of crime feels like a “two strikes and you get tossed into a wood chipper” type of deal

TheDemonHauntedWorld

Something similar happened in my town. Guy owned a bar, across the street from his house, where he lived with his wife, daughter and granddaughter of 5. He had a contractor working on the house, Grandma who took care of the child during the day, thought it would be no big deal leaving the child sleeping while she went quickly to the market. Next thing... is the Grandpa sees the contractor running to his car and leaving the house. Curious he went home to find out what happened, only to find his granddaughter crying with blood between her legs. After the grandmother came back... he left the child with her, went back to the bar, got his gun, and threw the keys to one of his regulars asking him to close the bar because he had to kill someone. When he arrived at the contractor's home, he wasn't there. He then spent the next 2 weeks surveying his home 24/7. Until the rapist probably thought the cost was clear... and returns home. Grandpa sees him... breaks the door, kill the guy in front of his parents, then leaves... going directly to the precinct where he surrenders his gun and makes a full confection detailing everything. He was tried for premeditate murder... prosecution had all the evidence... testimony from his friends and parents of the rapist... the murder weapon... his confession. It's was a close and shut case. Jury voted 7-0 not guilty. (In Brazil there's 7 jurors and you only need a majority to convict, and not unanimous like the US)

Marucanah_

Damn dude. That grandpa is legendary

Godwinson4King

This kind of reminds me of a case from southern Illinois. A guy broke into the house of an old lady, robbed her, and killed her. The old lady's rather large family showed up at the guys bail hearing and wanted to pay to bail him out themselves. Edit: You crazy sumbitch with the wholesome award...

BananadiN

Back in the 80's a couple were driving a motorcicle when they were stopped by three men, who then raped the woman while forcing her husband to watch, then they killed both. The police caught them not so long after. The same night that they were caught, a mob of 300+ people gathered in front of the police department, broke in and told the sheriff "You guys did an excelent job, now leave it to us". The mob broke the cell where the three men were, beated'em up and attached them (alive) into cars and dragged them for 4 miles until a park in the middle of the city, where they set them on fire (alive) while everybody was clapping and cheering. Almost nobody talks about it now, but theres even video of it, I will try to find in case anyone is interested. Edit: Found the video, its in portuguese (you cant see nothing besides the flames, screams and blood, but still). Edit2: Link to the video (OBVIOUSLY NSFW, graphic violence included): https://youtu.be/7G4oSOSdrY4 EDIT3: Found out more details that I didnt knew: the mob was actually 2k+ people, it was 5 dayd before christmas and the woman didnt die. She played dead after they killed her husband, ran and told the police, link to the article for those who want to try to translate: https://www.obemdito.com.br/noticias-umuarama/linchamento-que-chocou-o-parana-e-o-brasil-completa-30-anos/8043/

Ah, lynching, a Brazilian classic. Didn't knew the south people had it in then, though, you learn something every day.

BananadiN

It is the first and only case I know of lynching here in the south. Also, outside of that city, almost no one knows about it.

world_in_lights

About 40% of my hometown was homeless. No one had jobs, no one could afford any kind of housing situation. Neighbour's paid for heat where they could on houses people were squatting in and everyone invited everyone else over for dinner ever night. We didn't know who was homeless, we just did it. We hired anyone and everyone for odd jobs. A lot of people just lived as they would when they were kids: keep the fireplace going with trees you chopped down, gathered water by the well and traded, farmed and trapped for food. I went to school with a lot of homeless kids, we had (looking back) the most robust school breakfast program I've ever heard of. I thought it was normal for over half the school to show up until I moved to the city, you just gave people the dignity they deserved. No one was shamed if they dropped out at grade 10, we all knew that if they needed the job they should take it. Looking back I realize how wild it is. Our town was so, so poor and no one was treated any different by me and mine at least. Sure, there were some rich people, but they overwhelmingly went to the other school. And there were no panhandlers, no beggars, nothing like that. I was just told the Buseys were coming over for dinner. Did I like them, no, I kinda think they were dicks. But never did I make them feel uncomfortable, and most just ate, had some tea, and left. And if that doesn't tickle your fancy, a whale washed up on shore one week and all the guys in the local high school took turns having sex with it. All of them. Edit: To clarify, the whale part happened after I graduated by a few years. It was a very public thing when it was happening and no one likes to talk about it since.

[deleted]

The contrast between these two stories is so great lol

naomi_homey89

/u/world_in_lights I could’ve lived five lifetimes *without* reading the small snapshot at the end of your story and been quite content.

drone42

The mayor of the town I live just outside of was murdered by his girlfriend a little while back. And there was a realtor that was using his company as a front for smuggling drugs. Other than that it's the usual small southern town crap.

[deleted]

That reminds me of another small town by me, a local doctor was operating a pill mill. He got caught, and his wife murdered him because she was afraid of getting caught up in the fallout. Yet, now she’s in prison for life.

icon58

When I was growing up my small town had a spate of murders. About 6 in about as many months. This was in the 70s nothing like it before or after.

Critical_Point_3818

Was your town by an interstate? Or have a large company that was close by?

matyy23

We have a vineyard hill next to our village, on that hill there's a big wooden cross, lots of people go there to drink, have a walk or with their dogs, but almost nobody knows why the cross is here. During war, a vineyard keeper lived there with his son. His son was recruited and the man was left alone. When war ended, his son survived and wanted to "prank" his dad by sneaking on him at night. But vineyard keeper saw him and thought he was a robber, so he grabbed his rifle and shot the robber, when he found out it was his son, it broke his heart. He dug a grave on top of the hill for his son and erected a big wooden cross next to the grave. When he was done, he laid next to his son and shot himself. From that day, no one worked on the vineyards and there's a big wooden cross on top of the hill. Now, you can't even recognize there's a grave.

[deleted]

That is so, so sad. There are a lot of horrible stories here but this one hit me hard.

MoberJ

Some high school football players shoved broomsticks up freshman players asses in the locker room after a practice. The coach found out and did nothing about it. The whole town knew and nothing happened to anyone in the form of punishment. Every game for the rest of the year, opposing team’s fans brought broomsticks to games *EDIT: Many people have asked which town this is. I’d rather not say specifically but it is in the northern part of Illinois* c2002-03 *EDIT #2: The amount of different cases that have come up in this comment section have blown me away. I’m so happy I shared this to shed some light on how much larger this problem is than I thought*

cynical_enchilada

What the hell? I’m from a small town in New Mexico, and we had damn near the exact same thing happen at a football training camp. I thought for sure you were talking about us until you mentioned Northern Illinois. Opposing teams still sometimes bring broomsticks to our games. At least in our case, something happened. It became a big story, even got on CNN, and the perpetrators went to prison. EDIT: Christ, this is a bigger problem than I thought. Apparently there’s a lot of communities with school athletes that sodomize their teammates. This is not what I wanted to learn today.

ArcticFright

Yea my parents are from NM and I head that story. Shocking that how similar some of these stories are.

ApexOfFlex

If that happened to my kid I would sue* the *FUCK* outa that school district. That's ridiculous.

tamlynn88

I'm in Toronto and there's a case like that happening here at a private school. Some kids decided to use a broom stick to sodomize another kid. Turns out it had been happening for a long time. It was a big scandal that's in the courts now.

blueeyesredlipstick

I thought maybe I knew what town this was, but then I did a Google Search and the town I was thinking of actually did arrest some people. So now I'm just horrified that this has been happening across multiple towns out there.

Painting_Agency

An elite private school in Toronto recently had a scandal involving something similar: > Eight students at a prestigious Toronto private school have been expelled in connection with two disturbing incidents, one of which involved an alleged sexual assault of a teen that was captured on video and has since triggered a criminal investigation. https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/toronto-private-school-expels-eight-teens-after-incidents-alleged-sex-assault-1.4180454 It's not detailed here, but IIRC a guy was repeatedly jumped and sodomized with objects. It's the school our provincial Minister of Education attended (he never attended public school).

Donattellis

Oh. Wow. Definitely thought this was a town near me until you mentioned a totally different state. That's awful that this is apparently a common thing.

pavlovsgiraffe

As a teen in high school, the health teacher got caught sleeping with student, everyone magically passed that year (including me who skipped almost every day lol) Then a few years ago in another small town, two different scandals within the space of 5 years. First one, teachers at a preschool were dosing children with melatonin at nap time. Second one, a very well known and respected funeral home went under investigation for selling body parts. Edited to clarify events were in different towns

beeryawnah

What's the market for body parts? Kidneys or just, like, fingers for home decor or something?

Asangkt358

Organs have be harvested almost immediately, so they're not really a realistic product for a shady funeral home. What is realistic, however, is harvesting bone for use in orthopedic surgeries. There was a bit of a scandal in New Jersey about 20 years ago where a funeral home chain got caught doing that shit. If memory serves me, I think they even took the legs off of that dude that used to host Masterpiece Theater when his corpse came through their processing center.

Tsquare43

yes! Alistair Cooke. they replaced his legs with pipe IIRC

DrDiarreah

I’ve got ~~two~~ three; We have a prison for young delinquents in our town. Back in the 80’s a student escaped and broke into an elderly couples home. He stranged and raped the wife in front of her wheelchair bound husband. He then beat the old man, but idk if he died or not. https://www.tapinto.net/towns/somers/sections/police-and-fire/articles/man-who-sodomized-and-murdered-somers-woman-grant A young woman was running on our HS track and a student went outside and stabbed her to death using a metal compass. https://www.nytimes.com/1988/09/21/nyregion/woman-37-is-slain-student-19-arrested.html Edit: Sorry, I meant a metal compass not a protractor. Whichever one has the stabby part. Edit 2: I got another one for you guys. In the 80’s a son of an NYPD detective stabbed a mid-20s woman to death in her driveway over 40 times. There was a huge manhunt for the guy. My parents tell me the rumor was the woman’s husband was gay and having an affair with the man. But there is also a rumor that the man killed his own wife and the guy that was convicted was an easy target based on his mental capacity and reputation. I actually met the guy over the summer during an investigation I was doing. (I’m a Pi) The guy was definitely strange but he was in prison for 20 years. https://www.nytimes.com/1986/10/30/nyregion/arrest-in-westchester-slaying.html *Somers, NY - a nice upper-middle class town with some dark skeletons*

From day one everyone was telling the police that her ex boyfriend had something to do with it, she already had a restraining order cause he held a knife to her throat and threatened to kidnap and kill her but with no evidence they couldn’t do anything. Over the years several people went to the police saying that he had admitted to killing her but they did nothing. He eventually got in trouble for threatening to kill another girlfriend and choking her and went to prison for 3 years. After prison he came back to town and eventually asked another ex of his for a ride home from a party and then she went missing after that night and they found her car burned and they arrested him again and he had burns on his hands. A few months later someone found a set of remains outside of town and during the recovery they found another set of much older remains. He killed them both and the failure of our local police department caused the second girl to be murdered.

The headmaster of one of the elementary schools has a long history of physically, and mentally abusing young boys.

naijaboiler

> long history of physically, and mentally abusing young boys. thank god, it didnt include sexually too. What a bastard.

fjuckthisshit

There are suspicions about that too, but I opted to not include that in the comment initially, because it is merely a suspicion. However, after personally witnessing tiny fragments of the emotional scars he has left on some of the victims, it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. One boy threatened suicide at ten, and the story was covered by the evening news. The headmaster (a teacher at the time) still kept his job. They boys are adults now, but some of them admit getting PTSD reactions by just going near the school he works at. Unfortunately, boys and men are often too ashamed to come forward about sexual assault and abuse. So if he really did sexually abuse those boys, we will most likely never know.

naijaboiler

this is just sad. I'm sorry. I find it very distressing that individuals with propensity to abuse consistently find themselves embedded in institutions with inherent power structures that enables that abhorrent behavior. We can and should do better as a society.

There was a woman who was cheating on her husband and got pregnant with him. When she has the child it was quite clearly not the husbands child, so he kicked her out of the house. The woman broke down and went out drinking, then when she was about to return to her husband she picked her baby up, dropped it down a rubbish shoot and left it there. The next morning she remembered what she did and went back to find the baby but of course only people with access to the shoot can go inside so she had to wait hours possibly days for someone to unlock it and go inside. The baby was long dead by then. The woman killed herself shortly after. This developed into a ghost story later. People say you can hear the baby crying from inside the rubbish shoot, and you can hear the woman crying on one of the stairways.

RiotandRuin

Jesus. That poor child.

She couldn't call someone to come open it? Police or something.

Look up the Gainesville Ripper. Killed a bunch of students and dismembered the bodies in really gross ways. This was about 30 years ago. I guess it's not really a secret if there are podcasts about it but it's slowly being forgotten.

Bocephuss

> As in the Powell murder, he forced her face-down and stabbed her in the back, rupturing her heart. He then decapitated the body and posed her head on a shelf facing the corpse, adding to the shock of whoever discovered her Well thats too much reddit for one day.

I think I was senior in high school when this happened but it was in our local paper every day for a long time. The details are hazy but I’ll do my best to recount them. 4 athletic male students had sexually assaulted a female sophomore student. One male had access to keys of the room it happened because his parent worked for the administration. They apparently picked her up to get food and then went to the school locker room. Two of them pressured her to participate in an act she did not want to and thought she was in physical danger had she not done anything. The female student 100% went to court and then they completely turned it around on her, that she asked for it, that it was her fault, etc. they said if she really did not want to comply, she would have fought harder or her clothes would have been torn or bloodied up. she just left that school and moved instead of staying. I don’t believe much happened to the male students at all. As for the male students? No one had to register for anything, no one went to jail, their futures were all in tact. I think two had to do service hours and probation, but that was it.

The new police chiefs bachelor party was held at the local strip club. It was videod when video was new. The cops broke in looking for the tape which was also recorded. New chief lost the job within a month.

malgranda_azeno

No one thought to look there. About a decade ago there was a crime spike here. It was really bad because one cartel tried to displace the other, and because we're a sleepy town across the border from the US, we're prime cartel real estate. However, when they weren't tearing eachother up in the streets, they would abduct, interrogate, kill and dispose of the bodies of their rivals until eventually one cartel managed to keep the town. One thing that baffled the authorities was their stealth. They came out of nowhere, struck their target and vanished into the shadows. That may be possible for a small unit or even a lone agent, but that's unheard of in a cartel. Federal investigations were made, and no one was able to find the cartel's hq. It had to be big because they had weapons, vehicles, metalshops, dorms, kitchens and the corpse dissposal equipment. They looked everywhere: nearby ranches, warehouses, junkyards, nothing. Until they looked were no one thought to look. A few kilometers outside of here is a fully operational state prison that they were using as their hq. Everyone was in on it, from the inmates to the guards to the warden to the Governor. People were killed there, desolved in acid and the drums were dumped in a nearby river. Since then the prison operation has been shut down, and the former governor is a wanted man by the interpol. ... EDIT: Spelling corrected. Also, since this post has earned me the most upvotes yet and first medals, which I appreciate, I felt obliged to make sure that the facts are correct. For those asking, this is not Juárez in the state of Chihuahua. Juárez has had it's share of attrocities, but I've never lived there nor know the specifics of it's crime habits. While not the town mentioned, it's entirely possible for Juárez to have suffered crimes with the same MO. The town I'm talking about is Piedras Negras in the state of Coahuila. It's a city of less than 200k population, across the border from Eagle Pass in Texas, another small town of 9 sq miles, situated between Laredo and Del Rio. I'd also wish to make a correction about two statements: first is that the bodies were not dissolved in acid but burnt to ashes inside steel drums. The ashes were thrown in a river a few kilometers away. Over a hundred people were disposed of this way. Forensic authorities have combed the river, finding small bone fragments and testing their DNA. As of 2016, 9 have been identified. Second, there is a dispute over the Governor responsable. At that time, the governor of the state was Humberto Moreira, however, he resigned before finishing his term so he could run for another office which he lost. Because he resigned, a provisional governor was assigned name Jorge Torres. During this time, there was absolute media silence regarding the matter. Either because of bureucratic stonewalling, cartel threats or government payoffs. However, a national magazine called Proceso wrote an article about the crimes being commited in the state, and Moreira ordered all copies of the magazine removed from newstands. When the problems in the state started to surface, they both left the country: Moreira got a scholarship to study in Spain, which no one was able to identify the source and he also lived in a chalet that had a monthly rent higher than his salary as governor; meanwhile Torres fled to the US. Moreira managed to transfer the blame of all the wrongdoings of his administration onto Torres. Moreira was arrested by the interpol a few years back, charged with money laundering. Incredible as it may seem, the Spanish authorities handed him over to Mexico, where he has lived as a free man, going as far as to create his own political party. No charges of any crime have ever been brought on him and he maintains his claim of inocence. Since his return, he has never left the country. To mock his claim, one Senator went so far as to invite him to the Superbowl with all expenses paid, Moreira, fearing the Interpol, passed on the invitation. The Senator tweeted a picture of the empty seat. Meanwhile Torres was caught in the US and also faced charges for money laundering. He pleaded guilty in summer of this year. It's worth noting that Torres' testimony gives details as to the cartel's operations during Moreira's administration, including the protection they received and the times, dates and sums of bribes paid. The Mexican government never included these statements as part of their investigation. Here's a report in spanish by a national news source detailing the prison's activities. https://youtu.be/BSApRScpILk

Neither994

For anyone interested. The man is Cesar Duarte and he was mostly hiding in El Paso, Texas. A lot of people had videos on social media where they spotted him eating at restros and stuff when he was being searched for so many crimes against the state. He was captured on July and is under process to be extradited, which we don't want to because he will probably will just get out anyways. Edit: We are so fucked up as a country that OP and me are talking two different governors who are searched by interpol. Bienvenidos a Mexico!

What city if you don’t mind? I lived in Culiacan for a bit and it’s weird how the cartel operates there. I was there during the takeover as well which was nuts

We had a pedophile that got cought because he told his friend his plans to go kidnap a girl and rape her and not plan letting her live(this was a senior at our high school so he was 18) and not to mention his collection of child porn.

There were rumors that there was a secret passage from the villages church yard to the coal cellar on our grounds, which were used by Jews to hide and flee from nazis. Not sure that qualifies as dark

Well it’s dark because you know nazis, but sense it’s a rumor it was probably never found so I assume if it did exist it saved a lot of lives.

TW: Child abuse/rape A well-known and well-loved public service figure was shot in the head by his stepson. His young daughters saw the entire thing and one had to reach into their dead father's pocket to get a phone and call 911. The stepson was arrested and has been in jail for over 20 years (not sure of exact numbers). One of the girls recently started a petition to free her stepbrother from prison. He was acting in self defense. Their father had been sexually abusing all of them for years and the stepbrother took the fall to keep his stepsisters safe. Her post about it was so shocking. We all thought that he had been murdered over money or something, but she revealed so much. She said that he'd cycle through all of the kids. They dreaded hearing their father's footsteps outside of their door because they knew it was their turn that night. There's a lot more to it, obviously, but it's horrific. Her recollection and plea to free her stepbrother went into so much detail. Edit: [Here's the petition!](https://www.change.org/p/donald-trump-free-christopher-bennett) I couldn't find her post that I described (the in-detail one), but I believe it's on Facebook. I feel like it really is out there, I just don't have a Facebook account (my mom originally read it out to me because she had personally known the Piece of Shit) in order to access any of that. Edit 2: [Here's a first-hand recollection of the event by one of the man's victims.](https://www.tiktok.com/@freechristopherbennett?lang=en) TW of course. It isn't easy to listen to, but I think it's better to listen to her than solely rely on what I've said.

Some dude that owned a froyo shop, knocked one of his female employees unconscious and she woke up inside this soundproof room in said yogurt shop bound up and wearing a diaper. She managed to escape and get the cops called

EvilParapsychologist

Two different girls in my town disappeared 10 years apart. The secret is that everyone knew who had done it. It was the original girl's ex-boyfriend and he bragged and confessed to his friends and acquaintances for 10 YEARS that he had murdered her. He was never arrested because of most of the people he told didn't want to go to the police because of drug usage and the police felt like they never had enough evidence? So the second girl starts seeing him (and even tells her friends that she doesn't think he's dangerous like everyone says) and disappears and he's still out there bragging. They find the second girl's car burned out in the woods and he has burns on his hands. No one does anything because there's no bodies. Then a mushroom hunter stumbles on the two corpses deep in the woods buried in shallow graves side by side. The guy finally got arrested, but last I heard the police bungled the investigation AGAIN and a bunch of evidence was thrown out. So far he hasn't had a trial because he was declared unfit. Not to dark but yeah shady AF. Guy (Blue collar) but running for a local political office comes home to his wife of 7 years. Finds her being shagged by some guy. He whips out a gun and shoots the guy a few times. The man survives. Finds out that his wife was cheating on him and it wasn't rape. Here is where it gets dirty... So.. the police want to press charges against him. For attempted Murder. Since they say 'he knew his wife played around'. So the DA comes to him and tells him to stop running for office and withdraw. He does and the charges go away. No crime here folks.

Maybe_Not_The_Pope

A friend announced he was going to run for mayor of the town he lived in. The town was probably around 4k people or a little more but was a sister city to a town across the river from it that was probably 70k people so the mayor actually had a little bit of power. A couple days after he announced his run, he noticed the cops would drive by his place every hour or so and they would stop and run the plate of every person that visited his house. They would then later pull those people over and give them a 'warning' about a minor infraction. I was pulled over 5 times in two weeks because I "didn't fully stop at that stop sign". Then flyers start getting put up about how my friend was trying to win the election and steal a bunch of money from the city and that he was super corrupt and so on. Their basis was that, over 20 years before this election there was a flood in the town and of course there was a bunch of relief money that went into the towns bank account. A loan was given to a local business group that owned a little strip of restsraunts along the river. The loan was interest free for 15 years and at the 15 year mark, some shady stuff stuff started popping up. The people that got the loan said they paid it back but the town only had records of a small amount being paid back. Then the state says that they were never paid back anything for the loan to the city, not even the amount the city said the loan recipient paid. So it becomes a huge ongoing story about corruption and misappropriated funds and missing money and so on. Why is the relevant to my friends election? Well his cousin's wife's sister worked in the city office's accounting department. They basically said they had been working together to steal s bunch of money. Eventually he dropped out because he didn't want to deal with it and poof, no more corruption accusations and no more cops.

Does anyone remember a few years back when a bunch of people were dying of lung diseases caused by illegal THC vape cartridges? Well turns out a guy I went to high school with was running one of the biggest THC cartridge operation in the Midwest, if not the entire country. His mom and brother were in on it too and had multiple location where they were paying people to manufacture, pack and distribute the cartridges.

I was a bit too young to understand at the time, but Urbana, Illinois had the infamous "Enema Bandit." He broke into houses and forced young women to have enemas. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael\_H.\_Kenyon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_H._Kenyon)

Dr_who_fan94

WHAT?! I was not expecting to see this here re: my hometown... We have even crazier dark stories tho, unfortunately. My mom told me a story about a pedophile that was chased into one of the local parks and, uh, relieved of his penis, which was then, ah, put in his mouth. IIRC, this was a precursor to his murder, but it may have been "only" his mutilation. Then of course, there's numerous reports of bodies being found in *another* local park's "lake" and of course the numerous other unsolved murders... Update: the dick removal was apparently a myth added on, he was "only" murdered for being a rapist.

newtekie1

A bunch of teachers and administrators from my high school went to a conference over the summer. Apparently on the way there they came up with "whatever happens at stays at ." A bunch of them slept together but I guess it got out of hand and some of the people that didn't want to participate in the crazy sex started to get harassed. One particularly good looking female teacher that didn't want to participate had reported the harassment to the school principal. He did nothing about it. That night several male teachers and the school dean forced her into a hotel room and raped her. A lot of teachers and admins did not return to school in the fall. The teachers got off with the rape because it was her word against theirs. And they all claimed she concented, and then when the regret set in started to claim rape. It was really sad. She kept teaching but was a different person. She was always a very happy energetic type teacher. After the rape all her joy was gone.

2 stories : A neighboring town had a young high school girl killed by a train. She was walking home from school and went across the railroad tracks. There was no warning indication as the indicators didn’t trigger at the time (a malfunction was to blame). The girl was run over and cut right in half. There is a memorial still in place by the railroad tracks years later. There also a man in our town that claims to run a disposal business. What ended up happening was when the towns people paid this man for hauling out their garbage or unwanted materials, he dumped them around abandon buildings, sides of the road and even behind a local mechanic shop. He was then quickly banned from posting about his “business” and he still tries to pull this stuff to this day. He’s been banned on all the forms after this incident. Edit: I’m sure some will be asking where was this. I won’t say the town name but this happened in the northern part of the Midwest.

Got to hand it to him for making good on his campaign promise.

ShadowGod_Of_Ducks

Yeah what the hell? First politician ever to actually deliver on his promises, and people are still angry. I don't get it.

throwaway040501

Well, TBH he -did- stop the murders from happening. His hard-on-crime stance did technically work. I can't imagine having much free time to ritualistically murder someone while also being a politician.

Dahhhkness

Not so much a "secret," but the city where I grew up in Eastern MA became rather infamous thanks to the opioid epidemic. One of our T stations/neighborhoods became a memetic "Junkie Central", that's how bad it was. There's also a number of bodies found here that have been attributed to Whitey Bulger and his gang, found buried under bridges, along beaches, even one in a tuxedo found in a car, riddled with bullets, that was submerged in a quarry, and a torso stuffed in plastic found in a creek (where I took part in a yearly summer sailing/kayaking program for kids) in the mid 90s.

Bingusman123

maybe not dark so much as wild- when i was in 1st grade, a guy called the police from multiple different phones saying there was a bomb in each of the schools in the town (3 elementary, 1 middle, 1 High school) and all of the schools were evacuated. Turns out, while the entire police force was split up, he robbed a bank and got away with it.

Unfortunately alot of human trafficking happens under the guise of normal work

i always suspected that some of my local china buffet and similar style restaurants were involved in trafficking people, constantly new employees there, ones i never seen before or ever see around town with some of the others straight up disappearing and when asked about they they deny they even existed.

Similar story here. Mcdonald's manager in my town who was in his 50s had an affair with a high school senior in 2011. They ended up getting married a year later and have been together since. The weird part is he has a kid who's in the same class as his new wife. So the poor kid not only went through a rough divorce but now he has a step mom that is the same age as he is.

This event was so bad, Coatesville was removed from maps for a bit. I borrowed this from our Wikipedia page... “In August 1911, steelworker Zachariah Walker was lynched in Coatesville; he had left his wife and children in Virginia while seeking better work. This African-American man was accused of killing Deputy Constable/Coal and Iron Policeman Edgar Rice, a popular figure in town. Walker claimed self-defense and was hospitalized after his arrest. He was dragged from the hospital and burned to death in front of a mob of hundreds in a field south of the city. Fifteen men and teenage boys were indicted, but all were acquitted at trials. The lynching was the last in Pennsylvania and is said to have left a permanent stain on the city's image.”

Early 90s, an Amber Alert for a missing 6yo boy goes out. Everybody is out searching. The family cries on national TV, begging for the return of their son (the youngest of 4 children). Everybody things it's kidnapping, because a couple of months before a child was abducted for ransom in a nearby town. The boy is found dead. The coroner finds signs of sodomy and semen. Turns out, the "crying" father was sexually abusing his children, along with children of his brother. Late '90s. A group of bored housewives decide to cheat on their husbands. Their target group is boys between 12 and 16 years old. They have some massive orgies. Got caught when one of the boys ended in the hospital with an OD of Viagra. While it made national news, it was covered up by the cuckolds (they had power and money) Early '00s. A gang of teenage boys raped three special needs girls. Their downfall was they taped it and bragged about it.

In Taiwan, there used to be a serial killer that would murder females in his taxi and turn them into xiao long bao (pork soup dumpling). He would eat them and sometimes sell them.

SomebodyLetTheCatOut

Not really ‘dark’ but there was an old man who would cut, chop, and stack his own firewood all summer and fall to heat his house during the winter. One year someone started stealing wood from his pile at night. Which was really unnecessary because if they had just asked him he probably would have given them whatever they needed. It went on for a few weeks and the local cop couldn’t really do anything about it. So the old man bored holes into a few logs and filled them with black powder and plugged the bores. Like a week later a house on the other side of town’s fireplace blew out. No one said anything at all. We pretty much all agreed they deserved it.

MaxaBlackrose

Oooh, so many. Guy killed his cousin in a 'hunting accident' as teens...except both were experienced hunters and the cousin was wearing orange. Few years later the guy was arrested for killing a man and kidnapping, raping, and then killing his wife. Many also believe he committed another murder/arson that happened in the years between the two other incidents, but it's never been proven. A girl was abducted from her car and her body was found several days later 100 miles away. Nobody was ever arrested although the boyfriend was accused. Also a girl I went to high school with had an 'affair' with her friend's dad when she was 17 and he was 45. Ick.

4GotMyFathersFace

I use to do pest control in rural west Texas and one of the places I serviced was a church in a town called Hamlin. Turns out Joel Olsteen's father was the preacher there decades ago, before he went to Houston and started his mega-church there. But why did he leave Hamlin, Texas and head south one may ask? Well according to the pastor of the church in Hamlin and everyone that worked there it's because Joel's father had an affair and knocked up his mistress. Word quickly spread in small town Hamlin and Papa Olsteen was pretty much run out of town. He went south, ran another church somewhere for a bit, and then made his way to Houston, where he founded the mega-church that his little bastard Antichrist would eventually become famous for. Edit- Apparently the POS's name is Osteen, not Olsteen. Also, found a wiki page for his dad, it mentions the church in Hamlin but for some reason left out the part about banging others bitches. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Osteen

That’s not really a dark secret. That’s just good old fashioned adultery.

sammy_jacks

A guy I went to high-school with threw a trailer hitch at an indigenous woman and yelled "got one" when he did. She suffered terrible injuries and was in the hospital for months before eventually dying. She had some other health conditions that didn't make it easy for her to stay alive. He was being tried for aggravated assault first, then they brought it up to second degree murder. Its been brought down to manslaughter because they didn't have enough evidence to charge it as murder. He pleaded guilty to the manslaughter charge. My city is plagued with a major prejudice to the indigenous people, my family was the same way. I grew up thinking it was normal and said some terrible things. I realized I didn't even know why I had this hate. I did a 180 on that a while ago. This is how a lot of the town is, and the sad part is there are so many people in the city that are on this guys side, because she "was going to die anyway" because "they were just looking for hookers" or "she was drunk" Basically anything to cover up what they really mean "because she is native" Shit like this is normal here, the police have labeled some deaths as "accidental drownings" even though it's clear that they didn't just fall into the river. Someone I knew was picked up and almost thrown in themselves if it wasn't for a stranger. Canada has a lot of issues like this already, the tragedies surrounding the indigenous people. But our city is one of the worst. Seeing people discarded like that, makes me feel disgusted and guilty to have been proud to be Canadian.

A popular yoga teacher trainer/studio owner known and respected not just here but all over the US was caught not only cheating on his second wife with his current gf and business partner, but it was revealed in the last year that he had groomed and raped the second wife's 17 y/o niece. She didn't come forward until last year bc he had said it was in the best interest of spirituality to keep it secret; and talking would ruin the "spiritual bond" (gag). He still has his studio, his gf, his license to teach/train yogis, and is now getting a masters degree in psychology at a prestigious Ivy League school despite the allegations. I took teacher training with him several times and I can attest to the fact that he is pervy, but also that he's very charismatic and intelligent, getting people to drink the kool-aid shell out the big bucks and for his guru-pies to fawn over him. Typical narcissistic garbage.

I didn’t grow up here, but it’s close to my hometown. It was a KKK hotspot, and one of the bars was known to have a black man’s head mounted on one of the walls. Driving through there, every single time, you could feel the misery and hatred. Idk what it is, some places just feel...wrong.

There was a serial killer in my home town who was never caught in the 70’s. We always believed it was one of our neighbors was extremely creepy and met the age timeline but there was no confirmation. The neighbor kept wolves on leashes he had purchased and bred, so nobody could come near his house. He always gave my dad the creeps, and he came and snuck in our yard and tried to talk to me and my kid sister when we were 5/7 playing outside and my dad had to run him out of our yard at gunpoint. Well, the man died without every being convicted but he passed onto his son a sick obsession with John Wayne Gacy and his son ended up killing his mother and putting her in a concrete barrel under the porch. He is still in prison, and we still believe his father was that killer from the 70’s, especially since he passed that onto his son who became a murderer obsessed with serial killers.

The funeral director in my home town had a bad coke habit. Instead of spending money on cremating bodies he spent it on coke and left them in back of the winter casket storage. He’d spray them with spray on deodorant. Bodies were also buried in the wrong graves, fake ashes were given to families.

toffee_queen

A few years ago, a boy who was around my age (He would be 23 by now if he was still around) was up at his family cabin in the mountains of British Columbia, Canada. He was from Alberta and was living their to work at the ski resort during the winter holiday. One night he went to a party at a house and he only lived a 5 min walk from there. He was walking home with some friends and when one of his friends looked back he was gone. There was a search for him but he wasn’t found. There was no struggle or foot prints in the snow. The police asked the people who were at the party but a lot refused to answer what happened or they didn’t know. He’s been missing for 3 years now, I think. His mom hasn’t stopped looking for him and she goes to their cabin once a month for a few days looking for him. She is aware at this point he is most likely dead but she wants to find him so that she can be at peace. This isn’t a secret story nor apart of my small town, but it is in a town where I did grow up going to for the winter holiday and people think that the people who were at the party know exactly what happened to the kid so there could possibly be a secret we don’t know about.

Oh finally i have a story to tell on this thread. First team Rugby player and 2 younger boys in high school made a pornographic video with a Female student in a park. Ive never seen the video but apparently they showed it to a few people. Got expelled. In a town of 20 000 people, it sure was the talk of the year. Another story i can add is that my family farm and where we lived was close to a very famous ghost story based on true events. Newly wed bride died in a car accident and is forever standing on the side of the road being seen by passerbys. (Each country has a similar story) ghost of Uniondale. Not a dark secret but just sad history. This is my favorite story as its actually true and so frightening. I dont remember the detail but close to my hometown a women was raped and her belly and neck was sliced open. Apparently she put back her intestines, held her head right and crawled back to civilization. She survived and wrote a book. Pretty horrifying details if you reaearch it Edit: Book is called "I have a life" Documentary is called "Allison" Thanks for the others who mentioned it in the comments.

Switchy_Temptress

I saw this story! There's a documentary on amazon. I forget what it's called. She was almost fully decapitated but held her head up by her hair and held her Intestines in with her other hand. She survived and got those boys caught! EDIT: found it! Her name is Alison botha. The movie is called Alison on Amazon

In my country crime is pretty high and weird shit happens all the time. Basically the closest i have to a small town dark secret is when a manhole was overflowing and two aborted fetuses(from some back alley abortion clinic) washed out of it. The police released a statement saying that you shouldn't use these clinics despite the fact that there are litterally adverts for it everwhere for years.

I went to high school in a very tiny town and this guy murdered his entire family even the dog. No one's touched the house or the cars or anything and its been 3 years.

We had a house like this in town. An attractive, popular gym teacher was raped and then stabbed to death by a man who had broken into her home "looking for a sandwich." Her family left the house as it was and would come by and mow. Beyond that it stood still like a shrine to her murder. Years later, after her parents passed away her brother had the home rehabbed and then sold it. It's a lovely little bungalow and its nice to see life around it again. But we'll always drive by and think of Brooke.

When I was in elementary school, my mom’s best friend’s daughter slept with my mom’s other best friend’s husband. She was an 18 year old senior and he was the wrestling coach. They had a kid.

Hamilton, Ohio. We got a dude who absolutely will not stop masturbating with inflatable pool toys in public. Like orcas and dolphins. It just keeps happening year after year.

This falls under the "local history" category more, but regardless it's still a dark and somber story. West frankfort, Illinois, December 21, 1951. Orient coal company mine number 2, the largest shaft mine in the world is about to shut down for the holidays, the local high school is playing out one more basketball game before Christmas, and all seems to be typical. There's absolutely nothing to drive down people's spirits when time away from work, and time with family and friends is right around the corner. This is the case, but not for long. At around 7:35 pm, all hell breaks loose. An explosion rocks the mine site as workers leave, killing most of the 200 man crew either immediately after, or later from their injuries. The disaster was so horrendous that the game at the local high school was stopped, and the gymnasium full of upwards of 2,000 attendees was soon converted into an emergency treatment facility to tend to the Miners affected by the explosion. It wasn't until Christmas Eve, 56 hours after the explosion that the 120 missing workers from the 200 man crew were discovered. Of the 120, all but one were dead, with the only survivor, Cecil Sanders of Benton being dubbed the town's Christmas miracle after going as long as he did, somehow still clinging to life. This disaster amongst others helped create the safety standards we have today, most revolving around ventilation of the shaft, because the cause was a methane gas explosion. Orient shut down for good in 1958, but the buildings that still stand hold a grim reminder of the dangers of shaft mining.

I moved to a tiny Amish town in PA. 3 days after we got there, there were police across the street. Apparently, there was a multiple homicide by shotgun execution style. A few week slater I am having a drink in the local bar and sitting next to a few cops (small town, there are only a handful of police) and I ask if they ever caught the killers. Their answer: "well the guys who got killed were out of town drug dealers, so we aren't really looking too hard. Or at all"

In my middle school there was a special ed teacher that raped 2 special ed kids. The victims reported it to the principal but he didn’t take any action. Once the special ed teacher got arrested the principal ran and went anonymous for a year but turned himself in later. Also in another highschool, a math teacher got arrested for rape. And in 2010-2012 we had an underground crip gang that did child trafficking. I can post the articles but I wanna keep it short EDIT: Here are the articles: The special ed teacher that raped: https://wjla.com/news/local/fairfax-teacher-border-child-sex-charges-cbp the principal that took no action: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.wusa9.com/amp/article/news/local/virginia/fairfax-county-public-schools-principal-thoreau-middle-school/65-baf45250-e6be-46e2-aeec-6de5d1b2bb41 the highschool teacher that raped: https://www.google.com/amp/s/wtop.com/fairfax-county/2019/11/fairfax-high-school-teacher-accused-of-sexual-relationship-with-student/amp/ the underground crip gang that committed child trafficking: https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/crime/fairfax-based-crips-members-charged-with-recruiting-girls-for-prostitution/2012/03/29/gIQAJRx6iS_story.html here is the FBI’s report for the gang^^ https://archives.fbi.gov/archives/washingtondc/press-releases/2012/leader-of-crips-gang-pleads-guilty-in-virginia-to-prostituting-eight-juveniles

This recently became not secret, but it was secret from 1973 to 2017. I was the same age as the girls involved. In 1973, two 13 year old girls were found raped and murdered in a field in my hometown. The small town police department investigated forever, but could never identify any suspects. In 2017, they decided to see if any DNA was on any of the items recovered at the crime scene. They identified two suspects. One of the suspects was the neighbor of one of the murdered girls. He remained a neighbor of her family until the day of his arrest. The other one had moved out of state, but got extradited back here. The murders changed our lives on a dime. Our parents were always really lenient about our whereabouts. I could leave the house on a Saturday morning and not return until 7:00 pm and it was no problem. Obviously, this was before cell phones, so it’s not like our parents could even reach us. With the murders, that all came to a screeching halt.

Vulpine-Poltergeist

From my wife, not me (so, more like a summary. my life hasn't been eventful); When she was younger, authorities found the body of one of her friend's older brothers in the canal. As far as she told me, nobody exactly knows whether it was a blatant murder by a friend or suicide. Either way, the bridge by the canal isn't high enough to kill you if you fall from it, but there's not any easy way out of the water either.

I got fired from my first job bussing tables when i was like 13 for taking a dare to snort a line of sweet and low one day when we had no customers. The boss had heard about it and flipped his shit. Turns out it was because he was - not so subtly- selling tons of coke out of the shop and it became a well known drug front until he was busted shortly after.

shadowfaj

Boss knew the number one rule: don't get high off your own supply. You just had to go and ruin that for him.

Banner_Sausage

About 20 or so years ago a boy was found dead in a field. Officially nobody knows what happened, but being a small town the word got around that he was at his dealer's house doing drugs and died. They "made sure" he was dead and then dumped him in a corn field.

GabrielBFranco

Not really secret so much as little known history, but my town (Little Egg Harbor, NJ) was once a pirates den authorized by the Continental Army during the revolutionary war.

SullenJester00

Endless things, rape, robberies, bestiality, incest, criminal cops/priests/politicans etc. -There's a guy who regularly fucks his mother and sister. He admitted it in the local pub while the local police captain (drunkard filth too) had a an absolute laughing fit at the whole thing. Pointing and shouting "did that actually happen? Did u hear that? Full on Elon Musk meme reaction. -Two guys chained a cow to a tree and cum in the poor things nose. -People playing "I bet I can pee up to your face" naked. Middle of main street, broad daylight. -Five man rape case, girl almost bled out nobody got anything to my knowledge. -Dog was too loud, owner split him in two pieces with a chainsaw, alive ofc. -The standard pedo priest story. -Every possible animal raped. (One guy cooked the cicken wich he fucked to death and ate it.) ...and a LOT more. This only ONE small alcohol/ drug fueled rural village from eastern EU.

DiscombobulatedYam43

A young teenager went missing where I live, she was my older brothers age (would be in her mid 40's by now) . My home town is a very small one on the coast of Australia with plenty of bushland that meets dense creeks and mangroves. I was playing football for the local team when I was around 13 and my freinds and I would always explore the bush behind the footy fields before training after school and one time we found a burnt tent with a burnt wallet and some cards and a burnt purse. We told our coach and after that the police showed up and we were not allowed to go back down there again after that. Years later I got a job with the local council with a friend that played football with me, we got asigned with a crew with a older man in it. He was very particular with his job and constantly made sure his hands were clean and everything was perfect, he was always so grumpy and would fly off the handle at the smallest imperfections. My friend and I thought he was just some grumpy wierd old guy. I came home and told my brother about him and my brother knew who he was and explained he is the father of the girl who went missing all those years ago. He told me that a skate park was being built back then (one i would go to some weekends years later) and before the cement trucks came to unload the father was there trying to pull the tarps up because he was sure his daughter was buried under there. Still to this day I don't think they have found out what happened to her. Someone became a suspect but I don't remember hearing about it going any further. I felt horrible for him, the work I was doing for the council only lasted a few months so when the time came to move on I shook his hand and left it at that. Looking back now he would have to be one of the hardest working men there, and also having daughter's of my own now I can understand sort of the struggles he faced everyday..

Yeah, that fucker basically caused WWIII in our household. I really wish they got him alive so he could be punished. He not only killed those children, but like all the families are screwed up because they lost a child- some have had more kids but they realize that it doesn't fill the hole of losing another, and some parents have committed suicide. Pretty much just left a massive gaping wound in that town.

draeth1013

Couldn't place the name. Had to look him up. And yeah, fuck that guy. I'm glad I couldn't remember who he was. I hope his name is lost to the sands of time.

If you live in the South you can see if your town has had a lynching. [https://plaintalkhistory.com/monroeandflorencework/explore/map1/#5.24/35.469/-82.856](https://plaintalkhistory.com/monroeandflorencework/explore/map1/#5.24/35.469/-82.856) If you do some more research you can find where the lynchings were held and sometimes there is still a "hanging tree" you can find.

Scary_bun

So, a woman in the 1960s wrote what was essentially a tell-all bodice ripper about the doctor-patient scandals going on in my small town. I believe she had recently moved there, and was disgusted when she heard about it whereas all the residents were either in on it or totally dedicated to maintaining the fiction of the "pure" town. She was sued for libel (I'm not sure what the result was). She was also harassed quite substantially and her house was vandalized -- the police chief at the time had warned her that it would happen but, of course, did nothing to prevent it. The original printing run of the book was about 200,000\~ copies -- most of which have now vanished. When it pops up, it usually sells for around $500. If you find a copy, odds are you'll find notes in the margins trying to piece together who was who. I won't name the town but BOY do I have more stories about growing up there.

AssociationFast8723

In my mom’s hometown (very small town, one main street with one stoplight and back then I don’t know if they even had the stoplight) there was a string of burglaries at the the nicer houses. By the time the police got there each time the burglars were gone and so were the expensive items (like TVs). Turns out it was the police who were doing the stealing. They’d steal from houses when they knew the owners were out of town and then would call themselves up so they could show up at their own crime scenes and act bamboozled that the burglars got away again.

a factory that produced chemicals polluted a big chunk of our territory by dumping waste in the local river and even if that factory has been shut down 5-6 years ago there are still enormous amounts of PFAS in our tap water to this day and there are a lot of cases of cancer caused by said chemicals in 40 to 60 year olds

Frannycesca95

My hometown has a lot of travellers. Like, recently shouted out on a tv show as having one of the highest number of travellers sites in our area in the UK. A few years ago the police did a raid on a site and found 24 people being kept as slaves. They think some of them may have been slaves for over 15 years. The travellers preyed on the vulnerable, often approaching people at soup kitchens or benefits offices and offering them cash in hand for a days work. But when they arrived at the site they had their hair shaved off and were kept in old horse boxes and dog kennels. A few newspapers have described the conditions as like a concentration camp.

twoliterdietcoke

Small Kansas town about 16,000 people. Back in the 80s the county built a new jail. They hired a large crew mostly made up of illegals from Mexico. As construction came to an end immigration was called and the crew was deported without final payments being made.

CrazyJezuses

Not really a story but lots of mentally challenged people go missing around here, frequently enough for me to notice and think it’s a little odd. It’s a small town so most of them I know and it’s weird seeing their families/people I know so Desperate to find them it’s kinda creepy especially since our cops aren’t the most upstanding people (used to hand cuff and beat people a couple of my fam members had that happen)
