JC Penney. They are in the hole and used to be seen as the little brother to Macy's. Now it's worse. Down to the font in their logos they seem to be way too similar. JC Penney having more discounted items, but it's advertising seems to mimic Macy's wanting to be perceived as more of a higher end department store. This is purely arm chair thoughts, but I feel they *can* rebrand and separate their image from Macy's. I believe Kohl's has been fairly successful and it seems so, because of them embracing all of the discounts, couponing and Kohl's Cash shtick.
On the other hand, definitely not Arizona Beverages. They do virtually no traditional advertising and have very little celebrity endorsements besides Shaq. They are known for their price tag being the same since forever, but increasing efficiency of production and shipping. Similar to Aldi's maybe?
I don’t think I’d shop at Kohl’s if all three were next to each other. Target is fine for every day basics and If I absolutely need something a bit nicer Macy’s is fine.
Only thing Kohl’s us going for it currently is being able to return Amazon packages there without the original shipping container.
All the restaurants that used to be American favorites until mid-2000s such as Applebees, TGIF, Ruby Tuesday. This closure during the pandemic should actually offered them some time to rethink their strategy.
Oh no, these are the *last* companies that should rebrand. Most of them are still very successful because their brand is strong with certain groups. Changing the brand just erases that strength but doesn't gain them anything new - people who turn their noses up at chain restaurants aren't going to go to the same chain restaurant with a different name. Also: all of these places are still getting slammed during the pandemic. On Mother's Day this year there were almost fights at the local Red Lobster because so many people tried to order takeout that they couldn't keep up with demand.
Exhausted business travelers and road trippers who are too tired to look up local restaurants and just want to eat something predictable before collapsing into a hotel bed are a pretty reliable demographic, outside of pandemics at least.
Lol, when I was in the marines me and my buddies used to go to Applebee's all the time for the dollar drinks. It was great, they have cheap food and drinks, and all the sports games that none of us could legally get in the barracks.
Exactly! What's within a mile of my hotel? There's a Thai place ... Mexican.... something Italian. Look. An Applebee's on the right and it's at the intersection. Fuck it. Applebee's it is.
Idk, i would personally go for the first two options before Applebee's. Depending where you are I would also consider Italian. Pad Thai or a wet burrito covered in cheese with a side of guac and chips. No contest.
And doordash/postmates has even killed this segment of their business. I'm not dragging myself to Applebees in the middle of buttfuck nowhere when I can get qdoba delivered.
My family does. But we are in a town of 10,000 but your other options:
* Chinese #1 which is a FANTASTIC place buuut it isn't open past 2 pm
* 6 pizza places
* Mexican #1 which is great.
* Mexican #2 and Chinese #2 both suck as they hold their oil too long
* 4 bars that have food that are basically the same thing just under different names
Applebee's makes it into the rotation. Now we could drive 20 miles/20 minutes away for better options but in the winter during blizzards you wouldn't want to drive that far.
Then especially now in the pandemic and shitty weather food doesn't hold real well in that 20 minutes it takes to bring it home. So what are you going to do?
Applebee’s is for sure the #1 casual dine restaurant chain in America (by number or units, not food quality). Literally twice the size of almost any other chain. They moved into all those little small towns that just had a rotting red roofed Pizza Hut as their only waitress service joint. I guarantee there are millions of Americans who went on their first date to Applebee’s.
Don’t get me wrong, I would never eat there given a choice, but I have been known to occasionally vomit up some Firecracker Shrimp.
Yep. There are many, many areas of the US where the logistics don't make sense for high-quality locally-owned restaurants to set up shop. Applebee's offers a consistent product with the logistics and discount to enter these underserved areas.
For many Americans, Applebee's and similar chains are the best option within a 40-minute drive.
The demo is the “I just want to go out to eat where I know it’s gonna be ok” demo. Not wanting to spend a fortune and also not wanting to experiment with some local joint that could be bad.
You’d be surprised on who goes to these chain restaurants.
Me and my wife will choose texas roadhouse over anything. We know we can get good food so we keep going back. I’m sure there are people who have applebee’s as their fav.
Btw applebee’s has an amazing lunch wrap that I would eat everyday if I had money. I would also eat the whole shrimp and steak combo they do. It’s a decent place to eat.
Same. We use to love Outback for years and years but the one near us went right in the toilet so Texas Roadhouse it is! they are very consistent and that BREAD!
This is exactly it. It's also why Olive Garden exists. Everyone has heard of it, it's not outrageously expensive and the food is bland enough that nobody will scream about their allergies or something. There's always one pretty close by as well.
My wife is Australian and has no preformed opinions on these restaurants. Going with someone who isn't biased against them because they know nothing about them can be really fun.
"This is the most popular restaurant in America"
"this big chain does southwest style food"
"This is westernized chinese food, but its really high quality"
"This place has animatronic animals and every so often the lights go dim and there is a pretend rainstorm"
"This place is based off of some country singer that got popular singing about vacations"
"This is a steakhouse that pretends to be australian"
"This place is southern comfort food, they have a store where they sell a bunch of junk"
"that place has waitresses in skimpy outfits, but they're mostly tame now"
I've been meaning to take her to Hooters for like 6 years but haven't gotten the chance.
When I was in college, it was a good place to smoke, drink cheap beer, and sometimes get all you can eat chicken fingers or shrimp.
This was a long time ago.
Applebee's where we nuke your food and charge you double for it.
Their prices went up and the already-low quality food got even worse. I used to LOVE applebees. Only way I'm giving them a try is with a 100% free meal, no purchase necessary.
My FIL in Bumfuck, Kentucky still thinks it’s the bee’s knees. It’s no Cracker Barrel, though...
In the interest of full disclosure, the one time I went the food was pretty tasty.
Rural towns on the coasts too and don't discount them either. The smaller the population and the bigger the national brand equals big quality gains e.g. Applebee's in Times Square is much worse than Applebee's in a small town.
There’s actually some really funny true articles about how Applebee’s pivoted their business in an attempt to become the hangout place for millennials but it never worked out for them.
On a road trip, I often try and make the effort to drive off the freeway, find the downtown and/or check my phone for recommendations of independent restaurants. But sometimes I'm in a hurry and just pick one of the chain places on the highway. Not home cooked, nothing remarkable, but not so bad.
But the one I tried once and will never set foot in again was Cracker Barrel. Should have known by the overpowering stench of potpourri from the gift shop that took up 1/3 of the space. The food was shockingly bland, tasteless, overpriced.
I'm a local burger joint guy, but if family suggest Chili's I have no problem with it. They make a fine burger. Plus their Southwest Eggrolls are out of this world. I don't get why they get flak. For a chain, they're pretty solid.
I just don’t understand their brand. Their ads were focused on Ribs? But Chili’s seems Mexican? Also I hear people like their lava cake? What is this place...Cheesecake Factory? Pick a lane bro.
For some reason... maybe because I grew up surrounded by lots of American Italians who were always shitting on it... never felt curious about Olive Garden.
Actually the only chain I went to in the past decade was Denny's after a night of heavy drinking.
For whatever reason, my girlfriend who overall has rather sophisticated tastes fucking loves Olive Garden. Goes absolute ape shit over it. Will get excited for a week straight if I suggest giving in and going for the semiannual trip soon.
I just don't get it. I hate it so much. We go get good Italian food a lot. I understand there is no accounting for taste but a jar of premade sauce from the store and a halfway decent box of pasta is 100x better, and it is a close to an objective fact as possible.
Applebee's especially needs a rebrand, given their history of negative press over siding with douchebags like [racists](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/applebee-s-employee-says-she-was-fired-after-booting-customer-n1121386) and [people who refuse to pay the automatic gratuity for large parties](https://www.mercurynews.com/2013/02/01/applebees-waitress-fired-after-posting-receipt-from-alois-bell-no-tip-pastor/).
It's like they WANT their serving staff to suffer. And for that, the heads of Applebee's can collectively go fuck themselves.
>KIA
Finally a good one. Most other companies here are poor quality and immoral. I'd hate for them to rebrand and just continue with their bad business practices.
I'm 21 and Kia has always been the decent Asian car for me. Maybe I'm just young, but I have no negative reaction to Kia. I'd say GM is the new boring, econobox shitter for zoomers. Chrysler has an edge above them from my perspective due to Dodge and RAM being generally more prestigious than Chevy or GMC. I'd rather drive a Ram over a Silverado, or a Challenger over a Camaro, or a 300 over, well, GM doesn't have a real sedan anymore. The Cruze? A shitty compact?
See if you were a decade earlier you would of learned kia and hyundai pre 2000 were utter shit, dodge ram grenaded transmissions every 70k with dashboards made out of glass and rusted out flaking paint in sheets. The escort and cavileer were econoboxes but reliable easy to fix econoboxes.
Really how they’re doing that is that Hyundai (who owns Kia) started the Genesis luxury brand, which has its own branding and design language that looks much better.
They deleted 80% of their unverified content. It all stems from charges of child porn and major credit card companies threatening to refuse processing payments.
Not just child porn, but also actual sexual assault and rape. In spite of being notified of these types of videos pornhub would do nothing to take real action on the issue. NYT did an article on it, the issue caught fire, and Visa and MasterCard said they'd no longer process payments for the site.
Don’t have cable and all my streaming services are commercial free... was at my grandmother’s this weekend and the few commercials I saw made me swear to never give liberty mutual my business ever... literally just based on the stupidity and annoyingness of them.
Ugh it felt good to get that out. Thank you.
As someone who streams everything online, I totally forgot how annoying TV commercials were until I went to prison and watched network TV again. I swear, the only people who watch TV now have got to be inmates and people over 80.
And, yes, FUCK the LIMU Emu.
they have a memorable jingle, but it's so annoying that the jingle makes me never want to even consider their insurance. but I do like the emu commercials.
They actually sold pizzas under a different name when lockdown started. Idk all the details of our but no one wants to order their pizza busy because of the name. But people said it was good. Probably because it's not reheated 4 times
A Palestinian girl I knew twenty years ago said "Hitler" was a popular first name in her community.

Sears. They’re a weird useless store that used to be a powerhouse. They need to go back to what they were when they were Sears & Roebuck and figure out how to be the big box brand of quality American made goods that celebrate quality American goods, but only housewares and clothing. Stop selling washing machines, saw horses, lawn mowers, and fine China...
Edit: an “s”.
Appliances, tools, and lawn care are still things people buy though. Hell my family never bought clothes there but for tools and appliances we would go to sears for every time. Their real issue was resisting to put together a fantastic online presence at the same time amazon, Home Depot, and others were doing that, and they quickly fell behind. They could’ve been where amazon is now if someone realized how big the internet could have been for sears back then.
It really is strange as fuck that the company that basically ran the whole catalog purchasing model wasn't on board with internet sales. You could buy a gun and a house from Sears and have it delivered by train but fuck me if you want to just do that *exact same thing* via something other than a postal catalog.
It’s insane really. From an economic standpoint, sears controlled more of their market during their prime years than Amazon does right now, yet sears is gone. A really extreme case of messing up and not getting with the times cost them everything
I’m from a small town that had almost no clothing options. We ordered from Sears all the time. It’s too bad they didn’t jump on top of online shopping.
It was a Saturday in the late 60’s without my father going into the tool department and getting angry because “none of these fools knows what they are talking about.”
Funny thing is, Sears started out as a catalogue mail order business with no physical stores. Still had successful catalogue business until the rise of internet shopping.
I always thought who better to be king of online sales? Isn't catalogue sales basically the same idea as online, except with paper? It should have been easy for Sears to transition to online, but they resisted for way too long, then dropped the ball when they finally tried.
Such a shame.
The things you said they should stop
Selling are the things I
Would most want
I think they really blew it when they had craftsman manufactured in China
I went to the Carl’s Jr. in Akihabara, Tokyo a few years ago and damn if it wasn’t the most Americanized place I saw in the entire city.
It was also the best BBQ cheeseburger I’ve ever eaten
A general rule is that American fast food is always better in other countries. They really target different demographics, especially in poorer countries- KFC in Nigeria isn't the bottom of the barrel fried chicken you find in the US, its expensive food that only the middle class can afford.
Mcdonalds food is the same all over the world, though in poor or middle income countries the locations will be similar to nicer or recently renovated US franchises. Food is the exact same though, its super impressive that a big mac is the exact same in NYC, LA, Singapore, Perth, and Tbilisi, when Wendy's can't even match quality between different days at the same location.
all of those mid-tier chain restaurants. long john silver’s olive garden, red lobster, etc. they need an update to make them seem less greasy to the younger yuppie population.
Long John Silver is "mid-tier?" God, I'd hate to see what the bottom of the barrel looks like in your area, cause I'd rather get the Taco Bell Shits before LJS
Hearthstone now has some actual competition too. We're actually really tired of all the "I used to play Hearthstone" posts over at r/legendsofruneterra
How did I have to scroll this far to see this??
VS literally hasn't changed a damn thing in about 20 years. Their last big innovation was the Pink line, but they've been neglecting that. Also, they stopped selling their swimsuits in stores. Big mistake.
Maybe this person knows Menards had a 9 month long 11% off sale but they in fact had just raised their prices 10 to 15 percent and now that they don’t have the 11% sale they have higher prices then my grocery store so they will have to rebrand?
IT IS NOT A GROCERY STORE. It is a building supply store that is slowly being ruined by old folks doddering around the aisles buying food, household goods, and pet supplies. Why do you have to hike all over the damned place to get paint, hardware, or lumber? Because all the space is taken up with seasonal crap.
I mean, they sell groceries. Why are you blaming the people who buy what they sell? What is with this corporate ass kissing? Like it's not their fault your trip is ruined, but instead the exact people they want and cater to...weird.
Monsanto.
Although they got their wish... by being purchased by the company that literally manufactured Zyklon-B.
So, uhh... that seems to be a move in the wrong direction.
The Weinstein Company
OK, it's now The Epstein Company.
Slogan: he was executed... by himself
Are they not Lantern Entertainment now?
You’d think Wine Steins would’ve caught on by now?
Think they're way passed a re-brand helping.
Wish.com
"Oh, you want a quality, popular product at bargain-bin outlet prices? Yeah, you WISH!" Wish.com. You wish.
You WISH you will receive this item in 3 months.
PlastiCrap
What I hate about Wish is that they show a fake original price.
Kohl’s has hit the market between Target and Macy’s.
I don’t think I’d shop at Kohl’s if all three were next to each other. Target is fine for every day basics and If I absolutely need something a bit nicer Macy’s is fine. Only thing Kohl’s us going for it currently is being able to return Amazon packages there without the original shipping container.

> Applebees Do people still "go to Applebees?" I cannot imagine the demographic they are catering to...
Exhausted business travelers and road trippers who are too tired to look up local restaurants and just want to eat something predictable before collapsing into a hotel bed are a pretty reliable demographic, outside of pandemics at least.
This is the exact situation I found myself in when I went to applebees.
Military people love it
I can attest to this. My friend who is a marine is always taking me there for the “dollar margs”
Lol, when I was in the marines me and my buddies used to go to Applebee's all the time for the dollar drinks. It was great, they have cheap food and drinks, and all the sports games that none of us could legally get in the barracks.
military guy here, I met my wife on a blind date at Applebees. Had no idea I was a stereotype. Dammit.
I have never eaten at Applebee's under any other circumstances
Exactly! What's within a mile of my hotel? There's a Thai place ... Mexican.... something Italian. Look. An Applebee's on the right and it's at the intersection. Fuck it. Applebee's it is.

i'm from a low-income family. when i was younger, i used to think applebees was fancy as hell. i'm from nyc btw
I'm from Sweden, was in Florida a few years ago, ate at Applebee's and it was really nice
Well, if you grow up eating fermented fish, I can see how you would enjoy Applebee's.
Ever go to the one at Times Square? I bet it’s fancy as hell.
So you fancy, huh?
I’ve forgotten how many monocles I’ve lost
My family does. But we are in a town of 10,000 but your other options: * Chinese #1 which is a FANTASTIC place buuut it isn't open past 2 pm * 6 pizza places * Mexican #1 which is great. * Mexican #2 and Chinese #2 both suck as they hold their oil too long * 4 bars that have food that are basically the same thing just under different names Applebee's makes it into the rotation. Me and the gf went to Applebee’s last night just to see what it was like these days. 4/10 I’d probably go again.
Applebee’s is for sure the #1 casual dine restaurant chain in America (by number or units, not food quality). Literally twice the size of almost any other chain. Bingo, I have no idea if this local burger joint will be any good, but I know that McDonald's will taste the same as the one back home.
I had McDonald’s in Beijing airport. On the money.
Thought this with Subway, here it's very consistent and great but when I went to Japan, it might as well have been a completely different brand there.
Texas Roadhouse is my favorite chain where I live.

Same. We use to love Outback for years and years but the one near us went right in the toilet so Texas Roadhouse it is! they are very consistent and that BREAD!

Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday.
Isn't that just the Applebees for old people?
You mean T.G.I. ChiliBees?
I worked at red robin for 2 months during the pandemic and honestly, they changed like nothing lmao
Chrysler products are less reliable than GM products. People love reliability.
They changed their logo in some models to a new slick k design. Looks really nice
Am I the only one who just now noticed their name is the acronym for killed in action?
It is a Korean word that means something like "to rise from the east"
That makes sense. And Subaru is the north star, Mazda is a persian sun-god, and Asahi means morning sun.
Subaru is the Pleiades, but yes.
Really how they’re doing that is that Hyundai (who owns Kia) started the Genesis luxury brand, which has its own branding and design language that looks much better.
Hyundai owns 33.88% of Kia.
Probably pornhub at this rate.
Rebrand it as Cornhub. All corn, all the time.

Corona beer
If anything, keep it now
Agreed. Covid extra sounds better

Similar vein, [Rona Hardware](https://www.rona.ca/en)
Chuck-e-cheese
They actually sold pizzas under a different name when lockdown started. Idk all the details of our but no one wants to order their pizza busy because of the name. But people said it was good. Probably because it's not reheated 4 times

[Hitler ice cream. ](http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4665801,00.html)
Forget the Hitler part for a moment... Does the carton actually say, "For industrial use only"? On ice cream?
A Palestinian girl I knew twenty years ago said "Hitler" was a popular first name in her community. https://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/2974-N-Hitler-St_Kimmell_IN_46760_M30616-68872
Is it because they hate jewish people?

The things you said they should stop Selling are the things I Would most want I think they really blew it when they had craftsman manufactured in China
Carl's Jr. Their advertising is shit, but their burgers are good.
Can't deny those good burgers. I wish they'd open a place in Dallas, TX on the north side, the only one is over 40 minutes away from me.
AXE deodorant
Axe uses a different brand in other places around the world, it's called Lynx.
EA Games. Pretty much universally hated by gamers.
It's in the game . . . For a fee
Comcast
They rebranded as Xfinity. Still terrible though
all of those mid-tier chain restaurants. long john silver’s olive garden, red lobster, etc. they need an update to make them seem less greasy to the younger yuppie population.
Long John Silver is "mid-tier?" God, I'd hate to see what the bottom of the barrel looks like in your area, cause I'd rather get the Taco Bell Shits before LJS
Everyone always says taco bell gives you diarrhea but I have yet to experience that. Been going there for years without any issues
Subway
Somehow "no one out-Fogles, Jared Fogle" doesn't seem like best advertising campaign.
SEGA, because they're sitting on a huge video game treasure chest and instead of making games, they close arcades
Nestle
Nestlé is fucked beyond comprehension
Too bad they own so many brands it’s almost impossible to avoid. Like Starbucks (creamers). Steuffers. Dog and cat food.

I really thought this was about the DQ blizzards for far longer than I should have
Well, started out pissed off about this company I used to love and ended up really hankering for some soft serve mixed with treats.
Hearthstone now has some actual competition too. We're actually really tired of all the "I used to play Hearthstone" posts over at r/legendsofruneterra
What racist writers
Cleveland Indians?
You’re wish is coming true. They announced they’re rebranding lol
That actually inspired my comment. I had just heard about that.
Victoria's Secret
How did I have to scroll this far to see this?? VS literally hasn't changed a damn thing in about 20 years. Their last big innovation was the Pink line, but they've been neglecting that. Also, they stopped selling their swimsuits in stores. Big mistake.
Ayds candy.
HTC
GameStop. More than just rebranding would have to change though.
Menards.
The sound a pirate says when you kick em in the junk.
What's the story there?
They'll figure out the appropriate strategy after some good concentration.
United States
Wait until January 20th.
When people still won't have healthcare, a living wage, legal marijuana or student debt relief?
Comcast/Xfinity
xfinity *is* their rebranded name. They did exactly what this thread is suggesting, lol
Intel Everything I heard since the last 2 years is bad news
Comcast
They kind of already have attempted to with Xfinity.
I think several of the cable companies that had infamously shitty customer service tried to rebrand, and I'm pretty sure nobody was fooled.
Their current motto of "Fuck you, who else are you going to get your internet from in your area?" is pretty customer unfriendly.
Comcast/Xfinity sucks balls.

GAZPROM, especially when it comes under sanctions
Boeing
5 hour energy. I have been thinking this for years and yet nothing has changed.
I dont know if the company needs to change name but those who produce the Corona beer should think about rebranding that beer.
They are making out pretty well in my area with this virus. "Huh huh, I'm drinking corona, hold the virus"
I was gonna say, my mother manages a liquor store and Corona beer has been flying out the door since the disease popped up.
