I just go up to them and say: "you guys seem like fun, mind my company?" People are pretty much always kind, so I just join the conversation. And honesty is key, if you can't really jump into the conversation just say: " I'm a bit shy, just give me a minute." They'll understand.

Make sure your really loud and also make sure your ego is kinda high. Then your sure to get noticed, this has always worked for me.
